This place does live up to its expectations! I tried a fish taco, a chicken taco, and their horchata. Their fish taco was delicious! They gave a lot fish and the sauce was full of flavor- yet it didn't overpower the fish. The chicken taco was different because they use shredded chicken instead of grilled chicken. It was still good though. The horchata was my favorite because it was sweet and smooth! The cinnamon flavoring was strong but not powdery. Best place to get horchata in my book! read more

Excellent traditional Mexican food, excellent customer service. By far, the best authentic Mexican eateries I have been to in Davis. And the sweetest owners around. It is located just off downtown Davis, near 7-11. Don't let this location fool you though. It's like a hole in the wall kind of place. Parking is scarce on the weekends, so I really recommend going during the weekday, around afternoon/early evening. I usually order the ceviche tostadas, fish, or shrimp tacos and they are very tasty and fresh. The fish is not "fishy," and tastes like how fresh seafood should taste like. Coming from a country where fish is a staple, Taqueria Davis passes my taste test. The seafood is well-marinated with a zesty lemon-lime marinade, with a touch of cilantro and minced onions. The corn tortillas for the tacos are warm and fluffy, just like the ones I ate in Mexico. Shrimps in the tacos are tender and juicy. They use fresh vegetables, salsa (they have their little salsa bar), beans, and many more fresh ingredients. Never ate the meats here, but a lot of my friends tell me that the meats are also of excellent quality. :) You want authentic Mexican food? This is a must try place. MUST TRY. This place is in a somewhat sketchy neighborhood and doesn't have the greatest parking, but what they lack they sure make up for in the food. Had to try this place since the Taqueria I live near on Covell has such bland food, and I was also disappointed in the taco truck in Woodland, so was craving an authentic place. This place is small, but clean. Shared a day of Mexican food with my friend where we stuffed ourselves and consumed the following based on several fellow yelpers: pastor super burrito, carne asada fries, and two ceviche de tostadas (shrimp and fish). I called and although there were people there it was ready before I got there. Pros Customer service was wonderful, the guy was super nice. The food was authentic and seasoned well, especially the pastor burrito meat was well marinated...also the bag for free chips was a nice touch. My favorites were the ceviche de tostada fish, and pastor super burrito. Also the two salsas which I mixed together. Chips tasted great, and the fries were crisp. I also like that they gave alot for the tostadas and separated it for transport in the container so it didn't get soggy before I got it home. Cons (reason I took off one star) Shrimp was not fresh, tasted bland and looked like cheap frozen. Would have been better if they grilled fresh shrimp, but the rest was good. Also did not like that anyone could stick their dirty hands in the chips, sorry but cannot depend on cleanliness of strangers. Salsa was not great when they were separate, but mixed together was the bomb diggity. Overall I would return again because it's cheaper than Chipotle, you definitely get filled up quite easily, and it is authentic Mexican food, most meat is grilled and you can tell the difference. Years later, I still challenge anyone to find better mexican in the Davis area. Just had their carne asada super burrito and the meat is so flavorful, and paired with beans, rice, quac, sour cream. It just comes together so nicely. It's too bad they don't open on Sundays, but they're a mom and pop and I totally respect that. But I'd lie if I said I haven't gone multiple times on saturday, loaded up on a couple burritos just to keep my mexican ration full. Still would recommend the Taq. read more

I've been going here since I was 23, so ten years now. I'm still surprised at how insanely nice the owners and staff are. They are the epitome of excellent customer service. Strike two on my search for bomb Mexican food in Davis. I'm genuinely baffled as to why this place has 4.5 stars. I could name 20 different restaurants in Los Angeles and Orange County that blow this place clear out of the solar system. The service was great, I'll say that. Even though we waited a pretty long time for our food, the woman who took our order was sweet and really polite. The interior of the restaurant is great. It has a family-owned vibe that really emits positivity and happiness. Just a feel good kind of place. Unfortunately, the food doesn't reflect that image. I ordered a burrito with salsa verde instead of pico. It was huge, and I was happy with the portion. But man, it was so bland. No spice, no heat, no flavor. Nothing! The meat was dry, and everything was drowning in beans. The ratio of ingredients was completely off and I couldn't even get halfway through my meal. I usually don't like really spicy salsa, and I asked the cashier if the salsa verde was hot. She said it wasn't, and I assumed she meant that it was a low level of heat. Nope! It was bland and had 0 heat whatsoever. Not even a little bit of spice. My wife was disappointed with her enchilada too. The sauces just weren't nearly as good I was hoping, and everything was dry and flavorless. I'm still hoping that I'll find a decent Mexican place in town. The burrito was a bit small for a super burrito and had excessive amounts of tortilla in it.The line was really slow because families came to sit down and eat lunch together. I've been coming here for the better part of a decade now, and not once have I had a visit where the owners weren't friendly and courteous to everyone in their establishment. This place was pretty close to those late-night cheap mexican places that I frequented often in my undergrad days in San Diego. I even tried to have them mimic the vaunted Steak and Egg burrito from Cotixan on Genesee, to no avail. It was close but not close enough. Tacos are pretty comparable to Guadalajara's. They are the authentic street style kind and they are not too cheap on the amount of meat. Meat is pretty delicious too and they put some salsa as well. I REALLY tried to like this place! WIth all the positive reviews on yelp, I was excited to try my first burrito from here. I ordered a carnitas super burrito for $7.25. The man at the counter was friendly like everyone has said but I wouldn't say it was something out of the ordinary. After you order, he gives you a small brown bag to fill with chips and you can fill up little containers of salsa. They had a medium spicy green salsa and a spicy red colored one. My food came out really quickly and I took it togo to eat at home. The burrito was a decent size but you can get bigger ones for cheaper from other places like guads. After tasting the burrito, I can say it just tasted okay. Also, I guess I didn't read the description but I HATE lettuce in my burritos! The texture and crunchiness just doesn't go well in my opinion. The carnitas was just average tasting and lacked flavor. Even the salsa couldn't save this dull burrito. Maybe I should have gotten the Carne Asada Fries... but i'll never know how it taste because i'm graduating soon and I can't afford to have another mediocre experience. I like being called a boss, and the guy here calls me a boss. While that alone would constitute a four star review, they do serve good Mexican food as far as taquerias go in Davis. Growing up spoiled with taco trucks and gritty taquerias in Oakland, I find that while its not the best I've ever had, Taqueria Davis is the best out of all the others in Davis. I've had their deluxe burritos and tacos and suggest their carnitas and chorizo. Tonight, I tried their carne asada fries which came out as somewhat of a disappointment; the fries were not cooked all the way through. Its also a bit expensive, but almost the same compared to other Davis taquerias. Their free chips and salsa are also the best out of the other Davis eateries. The cabeza was very good, although the taco itself was sloppy and the other ingredients weren't very good. The burrito on the other hand was straight up terrible. Extremely dry. No sign on sour cream or guac. The meat was gritty with tons of tendon pieces that were not edible. Just an all around awful dish. The cherry on the top of the bad experience was that they charge extra for salsa. Not even chips and salsa or anything special. Taqueria Davis feels like home and never disappoints. This was my first restaurant I went to when I came to Davis and It become my favorite. I always recommend this place to friends and they've became fans as well. I've also tried every Mexican Restaurant at Davis and Taqueria Davis is the definitely the best one. Everything in this taqueria is great from the music, the ambience, and also my favorite thing about it, is just not the food but the photographs of Mexican icons around the restaurant. The meat is seasoned really well, the rice and beans are not overcooked and are really good. They also add a lot of guac and sour cream which makes even better. The food is authentic, delicious and freshly cooked. The people working there were really friendly. The decor is rustic but very reminiscent of restaurants in Mexico. I stopped in today for the first time. Located in a tiny strip mall, the exterior is deceiving. Inside, neat and clean with a lot of fun Mexican art on the walls and very friendly staff. I came in at opening time and ordered an a la cart Chile Relleno and a beef taco. The relleno was fabulous -- a great sauce and lots of cheese with a vey light batter. The taco was good, too, though the beef was a little tough, but I do like beef Rare and tender. No matter, I put a good dose of Green Chile salsa on it and that solved the problem. Had to try it out for myself so I went and ordered the Super Pastor Burrito and Carne Asada fries. The burrito, overflowing with juicy meat, was a solid choice. The Carne Asada fries, personally, was much better than other versions I've had in Davis. Best part, they don't skimp on the portions.
