Not sure how we ended up in Ruskin, FL but whatever the why is... soooo glad we did! As a Los Angeles native, I can confidently say this place serves authentic Mexican food. Like real deal authentic. You know it's authentic when you step inside and Banda music is playing. If you're eating there, seating is communal. So you may share space with another person/party but do not let that deter you from their fabulous food! I opted to order my usuals.. tacos to start. If a place cannot do tacos.. then it's safe to say don't go back BUT this place DOES tacos. And the OG way. Cilantro & Onion. Not the gringo.. cheese and sour cream kind of way. no offense to any Tex mex lovers out there. The woman behind the counter was very pleasant. And the Tias in the back cooking were throwing it dowwwwn. If I ever were to stumble back into Ruskin... 10000% I'd make my way back here. Oh and their agua frescas... fire! The food at Taqueria Don Julio was delicious! We ordered asada, lengua, and tripa tacos--all were super tender and flavorful. Definitely a 10/10 on taste. I also had a sope de lengua and a gordita, and both were equally good. You can tell they take pride in the food they serve. The only downside for me was the service style. The host was friendly, but I didn't love that we had to seat ourselves, pick up our own food, and then also bus our own table--especially considering the prices, which were a bit on the higher side for a taqueria. On top of that, the wait for the food was a little long. Overall, I would come back when I have more time to wait, because the food really was worth it! read more

You enter looking a menu on the wall with no explanation that you pick a dish, then pick a protein. Counter girl spoke in a soft whisper, with VERY LOUD music playing right over the counter, and after five times telling her I could not hear her, I had to tell her to turn the music down. Most of the seating is group tables and benches. There are chairs at the end of the table but if you sit in one you will block customers entering. Credit card processing machine uses size .000001 font, seriously EXTREMELY small. Food is OK but hard to enjoy after a miserable ordering experience. If I wanted to design a restaurant to go out of business this is how I would do it. Unfortunately, not much thought went into the design or staffing. We took a wrong exit and ended up at this restaurant for lunch. There were several locals so we thought it would be a safe bet. We ordered a variety of traditional tacos, a chimichanga smothered in white queso, and a ceviche tostada. Although it wasn't what I intended to order, the chimichanga tasted great. I asked for beef and cheese and made the mistake of assuming it would be ground beef. What came out was half steak and half shredded chicken. I have no idea how chicken was part the equation. Either way, it was good and very filling, and I could only eat half. Of all the tacos we ordered, only the shrimp was enjoyable/edible. The pork ones had a sour/gamey taste so I think the meat was starting to turn. The steak ones were dry and flavorless. We also found a hair in the salsa, parts of a plastic bag in one of the tacos, and never got the reorder of chips we requested. Perhaps we just caught them on an off day...? read more

This is like many other local non-franchise Mexican eateries. The food is large portioned and was cooked correctly and taste good. Adding sour cream and guacamole is an upcharge. And if you get the order to go they do not give you any chips or salsa. You only get those for free if you dine in. Which during covid-19 the dining room is mostly closed. So that was disappointing they wouldn't give me any chips or salsa without paying extra. I think my burrito was about $16 which I thought was pretty expensive. But since the food is good and sometimes the vendors are charging more which ups the price they have to charge at the restaurants, so it was understandable. WOW what a hidden treat. This place is kind of hidden in an outdoor strip mall. WE were looking for a mexican place and so many were outdoors and we did not want to sit outside with all the bugs. WE saw a sign for this and pulled in. WE could not find it but then seen it. It was empty but the kid was so nice. He explained what stuff was we did not understand told us there is different kinds of shells flour and corn. This mexican food was some of the best we had. I also like how they have mexican coke its in a glass bottle and taste amazing, why did we stop doing that here? Highly recommend this place. The ambience isn't much but you can dine here. The food is good, authentic Mexican. You can get beer here and Mexican sodas but it's a negative on margaritas. I came between 8p and 9p. They weren't allowing dine in because they close at 9p. I ordered a Chimichanga and a chicken taco. Both were good. The Chimi was huge! It came with sour cream and tomatoes and jalapeños on the side. I'm sad. It's not the cute quaint restaurant anymore. They replaced all the smaller tables with three big ones and two bistro tables. I guess they want to go for a family dining experience. I don't know who made that decision, but it wasn't a good one. People don't want to eat with strangers. That's the first thing. The second is that there are no more menus, just a wall of menu items. Third, what used to cost me $13 cost me $19. Same order. Now they have fountain drinks, and we both ordered orange crush that was mostly water. Then our order came, the tacos were half the size and didn't taste the same. The large guacamole was the size the small one used to be. After leaving Big Lots, I was craving Mexican food so bad. I was excited when I saw the open sign flashing in the window, so my sister and I had to stop in. When you eat in, you get free chips and salsa with your order. The chips and salsa were amazing. The salsa was authentic and not like a ketchup/ thick consistency like other Mexican restaurants. This was actually salsa. The chips were actually flavorful , light, & crispy. My sister and I both ordered torta sandwiches. I ordered mine with asada meat, and she ordered hers with al pastor. Both meats were very tasty. They weren't chewy, hard, or had large pieces of fat. The bread it comes on is to die for. It's toasted with butter and its really what makes the sandwich amazing. The inside was nicely painted with murals. The employees were nice and friendly. There are plenty of seats available. The store was clean. I was excited when I saw that they were building a location in Ruskin aside from their food truck location in Riverview because I was hoping for a wider variety of items and plates. Each and every time I order, I always get onions and everything else I ask them Not to put. It's annoying when they literally repeat the order back to you over the phone and still continue to give you the wrong order. Then I received notification that the order could not be delivered. I called this place immediately but no one answered the phone and the voice mail recording did not even identify the business. They even confirmed my phone number so they could have called me to let me know they were having difficulty. I suspect that the driver gets to keep the food if it's undeliverable.
