What a great spot to stop for tacos. It's not too far off the freeway and the food was ready quickly even though they are making everything to order. I got 3 tacos, Al pastor, chicharron and asada. My husband got a birria burrito. My fav was the Al pastor which was perfectly fragrant with spices. Overall the spice level was a bit more than Sacramento spots but still reasonable enough to munch on some free pickled jalapeños. I'd totally stop here again. Service was genuinely nice too! Not one to leave negative reviews because I understand the food business isn't easy. I came to try this place after passing by it a few times before. Honestly, it wasn't as good as I expected. The food seemed a bit overpriced, and I don't feel the full-star reviews left for this place are entirely accurate. I agree with another reviewer who mentioned the health department should send an inspector. I found multiple hairs in my food and tiny fly type bugs in my drink cup from the ice. I'd love to see this place thrive because it definitely has potential as the staff and their services are great but they really need to improve their sanitation, hygiene practices, and overall setup. We were looking on yelp for fast food in Orland on our way North on 99. This little place popped up and had great reviews so we decided to try it. Wow did we choose well!! We both chose the Borracho burrito. We've had a lot of burritos in our lives and agreed this was probably the best one we've ever had. Perfectly grilled meat and tortillas, and all the ingredients were fresh and perfectly seasoned. All delivered at a great value and with smiles. We stopped by this hole in the wall that had the best Mexican food you can always find them in the hole in the walls. Locals kept coming in and out ordering they said the food is fantastic. 5 stars for what it is (you don't go to a taqueria for the ambience) and good enough to take the ~5 block detour off of I5 for lunch. Food- Really good taqueria food. I had the veggie burrito - had fresh bell peppers and corn in it which was different and kind of nice. They took time to slice it and present it on a plastic plate with a sheet of wax paper under it. If there was cheese on it, I didn't notice it. Flavors were good. Husband had a plate - he wanted the Al Pastor and for whatever reason that was a special request as the plates only came with steak or carnitas, I think. But they did it and he was a thumbs up. Salsa bar had a lot of choices - all good. Ambience- 3 tables inside. Not particularly nice and you are right on top of the cooks. Bathroom is in the adjoining Mexican market next door. ~8 tables outside mostly in the shade. It gets very hot there and it's not a very scenic location tbh. Hey, it's Orland. Whatever. Stopped by from out of town and ordered the Orland burrito and a pastor burrito. Mine was pastor and the meat tastes so flavorful. Plus,'it wasn't oily so it didn't make a mess. My husband said the orland burrito was like a California burrito, he finished it all. read more

My party of five stopped into Taqueria Don Sammy for a late-afternoon snack on a Monday at around 4pm. The tiny restaurant was empty, which was good for us, since there's only a few cramped tables sidled up against a counter where you can see the owners (who appear to be a family) cooking all of the food! While the space isn't large, the interior of the restaurant is quite clean and functional, and there's a bathroom in the grocery store next door available for customer use. Maybe it's because I'm from Seattle, where Mexican food has been price-gouged to the max, but in my opinion, Taqueria Don Sammy's menu is extensive and very affordable, and all of our food came out in less than five minutes. I ordered one Taco de Lengua ($2.99), which came in a corn tortilla (I think all of their tacos do). The tongue meat was tender and juicy, with a good portion of fresh cilantro and onions and a radish on the side, which added a nice textural contrast and crunch. The corn tortilla wasn't anything to write home about (I don't think they're made in house), but tasted like better quality than most fast food places. There's also a free salsa bar where you can sample one of their many flavors of salsa, which range from mild to what they labeled as "XXX" (which wasn't actually that spicy) - try their avocado salsa for a unique taste, or a pickled jalapeño for a spicy kick! My hungrier friends ordered a Shrimp Burrito ($12.99), a Quesadilla de Carne ($6.99), a Chimichanga de Carne Asada ($11.99), and a Taco Al Pastor ($2.29). The burrito was quite large and had a generous portion of well-cooked shrimp, Mexican rice, beans, and a huge dollop of avocado/guacamole. The Quesadilla was a great value, with plenty of melted cheese and carne asada stuffed between two large tortillas. The chimichanga was also huge (noticing a pattern here?), and came almost stuffed to the brim in a crispy, deep-fried tortilla exterior, with a side salad with fresh-tasting vegetables. Lastly, the Taco Al Pastor had tender, flavorful pork with a well-seasoned, smoky taste, and was paired with the same fresh cilantro, onions, and radish as my Taco de Lengua. Their Horchata ($3.99) was just okay, lacking the characteristic creaminess that the drink is often known for, but the cinnamon flavor came through, and the drink was neither overly sweet nor had too much ice. Overall, we really enjoyed our late-afternoon meal here - service is fast and friendly (speaking both fluent English and Spanish), it's a great value, and the food is tasty - I would definitely come back if I'm in the area again! read more

I stopped here 12 days ago during my lunch break with a co-worker. The location of this place is downtown but kind of tucked away off of the main streets, I walked in and ordered a Birria Burrito and waited for it to be done. There were only three tables so I felt like this was definitely a place you kind of grab & go. I found the prices of everything to be on the cheaper side and the size of the food to be more than average. I appreciated that. The food was excellent as the cook knows exactly how to season the food for great blended flavors. To start off we both dove into the perfectly cooked and salted chips and their fresh juicy pico de gallo salsa. I ordered a carne asada chimichanga ( hold the rice) covered with crisp shredded lettuce, fresh chopped tomato, white cheese and a light crema - great flavors and tender asada. Co-pilot ordered carnitas tacos, rice and beans and it was deliciosa! Glad we were near this little town on a perfect weather day for eating outdoors. Little hole in the wall off the freeway. The people who run it are really nice and there's a salsa bar which I live for. The Horchata is super good and they give you a healthy amount. We were driving from Lake Almanor to the Orland area around 8:30 pm Sunday and I was craving Mexican food. We had stopped at a food truck on Hwy 99 outside of Corning but it was closed. I saw that Don Sammy's was still open so I called ahead and ordered my husband an Orland burrito (carne asado) and myself the shrimp fajitas. It was fairly crowded when we arrived. Someone was set up outside with a grill and there were a few tables and the kitchen inside where the magic happens. There were several tables outside too. It was a beautiful evening and we ate outside. My shrimp fajitas were the bomb! There were so many shrimp(10-12) peppers, onions, guacamole, pico de gallo, rice, beans, and 6 delicious corn tortillas. I could only eat half of it. My husband's carne aside burrito was top-notch. He loved it. It had everything a loaded burrito should have and he ate the whole thing and complained about how full he was on the way home. Our meal was under $30.
