I was searching for a taqueria on my drive between central and southern CA and Taqueria Hidalgo fit the bill. It's a simple shop with fast service. I ordered a burrito with carne asada, rice, beans and cheese. The tortilla was great and they included lots of melty cheese. The ratio of ingredients was spot on. I did get a few chewy pieces of meat and I wish that the burrito was a little bigger for the price, but overall it got the job done. My family and I stopped in on our way home to the Bay Area from Pismo. Glad we did. It was so convenient as it's right off of the 101. It seems to be a family ran restaurant with friendly staff who make tasty dishes. On this trip we ordered the garlic shrimp plate, carnitas sopes, and carne asada tacos. This is definitely a spot you want to make sure to visit while passing by. I was greeted by a young girl who was patient and got my order right, they have a good selection of drinks. My girlfriend got agua de horchata and it was delicious (as someone who dislikes agua de horchata normally). I got asada, al pastor and chicken to try. My mom made sure that we drove by this place on the way home. It's at the bottom of the grade from Carmel. The food is delicious. I will never come back to this place again... because it is so out of the way compared to the places that I live. HOWEVER, it will live on as a great taco place in my heart. I basically ordered half the menu: carnitas and al pastor sopes, carne asada, carnitas, lengua, buche, tripe, and pescado tacos, and carnitas quesadilla plus horchata and hibiscus juice. Everything was mad heat, the tortillas were more tasty than tolerable somehow, and the meats were perfectly crispy. I didn't know that there was a flow state for eating until I started munching on my sister's food. Needless to say we ended up placing two more orders! I'm pretty sure that this place is popular with the locals because there were guys walking in and out with their orders within 5 minutes.
