Alma's Bakery is now called KB Cafe. Same address with a phone number of 831-679-1099. The bakery items are similar and quite tasty also attractively displayed. They don't advertise it with signage but they do make tortas (sandwiches) at the far end of the counter. We ordered carne asada and carnitas. The carne asada was very dry, the bread did not have a good taste and the ratio of meat to bread was disappointing. Fortunately, the carnitas was very flavorful, with a good ratio and the bread roll though the same in appearance was much fresher tasting. Hoping for the best with the new changes. read more

The best I've had in 40 years. Stop here on the way back to the Bay or on your way out. If this was near our house, we'd eat here too much. The Barbacoa beef and carnitas tacos were just like we used to get in East LA, in the 60's and 70's. The Pan Dulce was so fresh, flavorful and what I have been seeking for years. Come on people elsewhere than Alma's, in Chualar, do better. Can't wait to return to get the Chile Verde. Thank you Alma. People are so lucky that live near this lovely and friendly place. Best chile verde burrito I've had in a long time. We had to order blind because their electronic menu was offline. Got the "super" burrito with avocado, sour cream and queso fresco. Great chile verde with just enough heat. Too full to order from the bakery but it all looked great. Definitely worth timing your lunch when traveling US 101. It's the last place before the northbound on ramp in Chualar and a little tricky to back out. read more

The food and bread are all right but service is not it on my way to work when working in Salinas my boss stops so we can get food for on our way and it's happened twice now with the same girl that works there I'm literally standing in line and she can clearly see me and still decides to call the person behind me this last time she called the 3 people behind me and when I kept on saying hello I'm next she ignored me even the guy behind me said she's next (me) and got mad very bad customer service from her part. read more

The place itself is pretty worn out. The food at this restaurant is the worst. Their Tortas especially.

Absolutely amazing!!! driving down to LA from SF and this will be my new go to road trip stop. I had the best pastor burrito it was soooo good I genuinely was put in a better mood after eating it. The pastor was so delicious and flavorful and honestly was comparable if not even better than some of the pastor I had in Mexico (and i'm mexican!) Seriously want to bulk order them to take home and freeze. Such a cute place with great pan and pasteles too smelled amazing and taste so good! TONS of great drink options too and we even picked up some tortillas that smelled enchanting and im very excited to cook with them. Have driven by this place a few times early in the morning and it has been absolutely packed. Finally I had to investigate for myself and see how it was. I must have caught a matter of time because the wait was very long and there was nobody in the building. Ordered two tacos with cheese they handed me my bag and I left and they give me to Tortas instead some people would see that as a bonus but I wanted my tacos. So I drive buy a couple of times a day on my commute, right off Highway 101 in Chular. There's one exit going each way, if you miss it, it's a long turn around. This place is busy from the time the doors open till the Sun goes down. Farmers, locals and travelers know this is a must start to there day. From simple coffee and teas to delicious breakfast burritos and pan( Mexican breads,pastry). For lunch and later feast on your choice of tacos, tortas, burritos and combinations of mixed plates. All that I've had has been fresh and tasty. The chili verde super burrito is especially good...perfectly spicy. So why the four and not five stars, living in an area of more taco shops, Mexican restaurants than any other specific food type, I can be picky. No beers a bummer but I get it, no hot sauces is a bummer that I don't get. Hey...almost forgot to say the service was helpful and polite, well they are. Last words...don't miss that exit! read more

It was a good option versus taking the kids to Mc Donalds. I was able to place the order over the phone on my way to appointments but I had to dial three times until they answered. When I got there, I told the cashier my name and she responded with an incorrect order. It looks like a lot of people stop on the go like I did, for sure next time calling 15 min ahead. I come here for the Carnitas tacos. They have mastered the art of cooking Carnitas. The Carnitas have just the right amount of oil and the meat is tender with a little bit of crispy tips. To me that is the best way to serve Carnitas. And if you like it spicy make sure you ask them to add grilled jalapeños to the tacos. The jalapeños push the tacos over the top! read more

A good place to stop when traveling Hwy 101 ten minutes south of Salinas. They sell fresh juice with your choice of orange, carrot, celery, beets, etc. My favorite juice has all the ingredients. They make burritos, tacos and tortas as you order them. They also have pre-made Mexican pizzas, flan and sweet bread. They have a self serve coffee, chocolate and champurrado bar and a good selection of bottled, water, soft drinks, juices, and dairy products. However, if you stop here very early in the morning it will be busy with truck drivers and farm workers on their way to work. Bakery products are delicious but somewhat expensive. read more

There's not much in this little town, but even if there was, I would choose this place for another taco. It was your standard simple carnitas taco but it was very good, and all the flavors came together nicely! Also topped it off with a big chocolate covered strawberry which was awesome!
