Found this great spot in north Austin, super friendly employees with a great selection of foods and accessible location! The breakfast tacos were really good, a tortilla de harina (flour tortilla) with bean and cheese and one with potato and chorizo was a great breakfast combo, exactly what I was crazing. 5/5 I also got a beef fajita quesadilla that was very good, good amount of cheese (4/5, the meat was a bit chewy) + paired with the green salsa made it so much better They were very quick in making the food, 10 minute wait time, max. They do not sell drinks unfortunately, I believe it's because they're located next to a corner store, but not entirely sure the reason behind that, just that someone doesn't allow them to sell drinks. After going on a Saturday morning when they opened at 8 a.m., here's my experience: 1) Food: They have a full taco menu, including a large breakfast taco menu. For one hungry person, three breakfast tacos is plenty. I ordered a ham taco, a chorizo taco and a bacon taco. The winner was the bacon. Use all the salsa it comes with! They also give you an option of a flour or corn tortilla. 2) Price: For three medium-sized breakfast tacos, my bill was $7.50. If you like authentic Mexican street tacos, this is a great choice. If you were planning to eat in, maybe not so much. I took the recommendation of another reviewer and got the picadillo (ground beef) with potatoes, the pork meat in red sauce, and the al pastor. Start with my usual favorite, the Al Pastor. The other reviewer said it was bad, but for a buck and change, I had to judge for myself. I found it worse than previously described. It had a TERRIBLE off taste that I recognized but couldn't place. Yuck! The picadillo was good, though I didn't see any potatoes. It had peas in it, and was seasoned pretty well. Ground beef isn't my first choice, but this was good. The winner though was the pork meat in red sauce... this was awesome in an Al-Pastor-like way. Had a nice little kick to it. I had corn tortillas across the board, and they were good, as were the 2 salsas that were included, along with a lime wedge. This would be a great take out option, but they were good enough to eat in the car. Just, please don't order that awful Al Pastor! UPDATE: The breakfast tacos are pretty good too. On the corner of 51st and Airport Blvd, so don't come here expecting atmosphere or hipsters. They have one table, so you'll probably need to take it to go or eat in your car. However, the food was quite tasty. Fresh homemade flour and corn tortillas were awesome. I tried the picadillo (ground beef) with potatoes, the pork meat in red sauce (like a carne guisada) and the al pastor. The first two were divine melt in my mouth goodness. The carne guisada with red sauce was actually pretty spicy too. The al pastor was only OK. I've certainly had better. It was a bit on the tough side, where I normally prefer melt in your mouth goodness. Overall, a great experience considering it came out of a crappy little trailer. They also have breakfast tacos, tostadas, sopes and gorditas. They apparently have menudo on the weekends if you're into that stuff... No beverages, but you can grab one in the convenience store. My Spanish is very bad, and they were quite patient and gracious with my attempts to order en espanol. There is a nice place to sit and wait for your order or eat. As an update to previous images of the menu, all tacos are currently $2, all gorditas are $4. I went for the first time today and got 3 tacos: carne guisada, barbacoa, and al pastor. The first two were amazing, the final one was just OK. Because the carne guisada is just a more delicious version of the al pastor, I highly recommend always opting for the former rather than the latter. The service was friendly and the salsa was delicious (and a bit spicy). One of my friends got the gordita and I think next time I'll getting a gordita and a taco because his meal looked even more amazing. The only negative here is the lack of parking. read more

Really affordable and yummy tacos! The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is because I felt the salsas were lacking and one of the tacos was too greasy. There is red salsa and green salsa. The red salsa was super spicy. I enjoy spice but I felt that it was too spicy and lacking flavor. The green salsa looked like chopped pickled chiles and also lacked flavor. Jeebus. My man and I swung by here to grab these gorditas he always talks about. Since he likes to work at Flightpath, he ends up going here often for their awesome tacos and gorditas. The gorditas here are glorious. They're perfect, delectable pockets of goodness, filled with the meat of your choice, refried beans, lettuce, tomato, avocado and cheese. It's a little miracle gordita that doesn't fall apart as you eat it. I'm a messy eater, and there wasn't a mound of gordita filling on my plate when I finished! They do the pastor and barbacoa really well! Ever since Taqueria El Risconsito apparently switched owners, I've been looking for a new taco stand. I've found it and it's closer to my house. I went today for the first time, stepped out into the sweltering heat and walked to the window. Although there was a language barrier, we made do. I ended up getting a barbacoa taco and an al pastor gordita. The barbacoa taco itself was almost perfect. Fatty cheek meat, a smattering of onions, and just enough cilantro on a fresh corn tortilla. The housemade (and surprisingly chunky) salsa verde tied it off perfectly. The only problem was that the taco had been sitting there while she made my gordita. By the time I got it, it was absolutely sodden and a bit tough to eat because of how wet it was. That's because it was sitting for about ten minutes. It sat for ten minutes because she handmade my gordita. She actually griddled the masa right there, filled it with refried beans and other filling I was too busy eating to dissect, and a very passable al pastor. Hell yes. It's absolutely filling and dirt cheap, not to mention damned tasty with that green salsa. read more

I tried a couple of tacos from here today. I left pleased by the price and the food. It's about $1.50 a taco. I had a good lunch for 6 bucks. The best part of this place is the tortillas. They have both corn and flour and the best part of it is that both are freshly made in front of your face. One lady takes your order while the other starts prepping your tortillas. She rolls one tortilla serving out of a batch and then puts it on a hot plate. BAM FRESH!!!! SO GOOD. I tried both and enjoyed both. My menu included the al pastor, the lengua, the beef fajita, and the barbacoa. My favorite by a mile was lengua. I haven't had lengua that juicy and flavorful ever. The junks of lengua were large and I voraciously tore that thing up. The al pastor was a weird kind of pastor and it had a very different flavor. I wouldn't say it was bad or good but I'd have to eat it again to see if I do like it. The beef fajita had flavor but was a bit dry. The barbacoa was really tasty too. It's the taste of usual barbacoa but they made it healthier. It didn't drip of grease and my heart was still pumping after I ate it. Coming back for round 2 some other time. read more

That being said this place is the real deal, so there breakfast tacos are more in line with what Mexicans eat (Pápa con huevo, frijoles con chorizo, etc) Lunch: There isn't anything fancy about picadillo, ground beef, but it's seasoned exactly like your mexican grandmother would make it. I get them with beans on corn and it's great. They do add chopped onions and cilantro to everything so ask them to leave it off if that's not your thing. The quesadillas use the right kind of cheese. (These don't get the onion/cilantro treatment because they aren't crazy) Today, I got the tostada too. Beans, cheese, lettuce, avocado and shredded chicken. This exactly what I expect on a tostada. The first virtue of La Canaria is that is walking distance from where we were staying and it was open very, very late. So we staggered in for quesadilla, and relleno apps. I know Texans love guns and ammo, but those little peppers looked like bullets and were so hot loaded inside their bread casing, you had to wonder what shot the flesh off your ltps when you actually eat one. The outdoor patio with high, strewn lights between the oaks was great, even on a sultry hot night. It overlooks a channel that once was filled with water before the drought. The best food are for those who can tolerate the authentic ambiance. I used to go to Caesar Chavez, Vera cruz all natural, etc for my tacos until this place entered my culinary psyche and now haunts my dreams. $2.50 Tacos, can not be beat. $6 Burritos that you are a better man/lady or child than me if you can finish. It's huge. Huge. Tortas are something I need to be in the mood for but when I am, this is the place. Don't go here if you want to have a.c, if you demand a waiter to serve you, you want $5 foo foo tacos. If you want the best, go exclusively where the people who's culture food you are eating go. I have been trying to find a good taco place in Austin and have tried several. This is yet one more that is mediocre. First of all, I am surprised at the price of the tacos at most places in this town, $1.75 for a baja style taco, i.e. small, is pretty steep. Even in Dallas they have some great taco places averaging $1.25 - 1.40. Second, salty, salty, salty! I had the pastor and beef and both were loaded with salt, my tongue was numb from the taste. My wife told me that there was a great Mexican trailer that has pretty authentic food and boy was she right! Taqueria La Canaria is delicious! The food is to die for! Sure it is a small trailer and the employees don't speak very good English, but these are the type of trailers that you want to get Mexican food from here in Austin. I have tasted a handful of tacos here but what blew me away was the Carne Guisada de Puerco en Salsa Roja Tostada. This thing is the real deal and is the reason why I bug my wife to come with with me to this place. As it is a trailer next to a convenient store there is not much of a place to sit and eat. They have a small table or two outside the trailer that you can eat at, but I see most people taking it to go (the food comes out pretty fast). If you want some genuinely good mexican food that is authentic and wont break your bank for a taco and a tostada, then definitely try this place out. read more

I have to say that La Caneria has been one of my favorite trailers in Austin for the past 6+ years. They are always friendly and you can't beat the fresh handmade tortillas and gorditas for a small price. The gordita with picadillo is definitely my favorite and I always get an al pastor to go along with it which are great too. The salsas are fresh and definitely hand made as well. These people don't skip steps, its true handmade food. I also enjoy their breakfast tacos; quick, cheap and delicious. Oh and it says they stop breakfast at 11am but they dont seem to be bothered if I order them well after that. There are only a couple tables to sit at so I would plan on having a backup plan if you plan to dine in. read more

Honestly a top 5 taco experience of my life. If you want THE REAL come here. They are open but keep weird hours in the summer cause of the heat (they closed at 3:15p) but I pleaded (in Spanish, though I think they speak more English than they let on)for 3 pastor and 3 bistek and they obliged and MAN they little piezas of heaven mi amigo. I enjoyed every bite - the meats were charred perfectly and all I needed to do was spritz some lime on top. Salsa would just mute how good the meat was so I skipped it. If you see that they're open pull over immediately. Get cash from the convenient store next store (with a $2 fee) and get 3 tacos per person. Great tacos!! Had the carne guisada taco, best taco I've had since moving to Austin. The corn tortilla was probably the best I've ever had period. The hot sauce is so good too, and pretty spicy. They give you two hot sauces and the one that's darker is the best and hottest. Also had the beef gordita. It was good. Not the most tender meat ever but it was good. And the tortilla on it was on point! Overall solid taco truck. I would drive out of my way and pass several others to eat here. Just saying. read more
