This place was better than expected. The person taking my order was nice and gladly answered my questions and provided their own opinion when I asked which tortilla they preferred. There's only space outside for eating. You order from the window. We ordered their bacon deluxe, chorizo deluxe, Al pastor, and tinga. They were pretty good. The breakfast tacos were cheesy (yum) and the lunch tacos were both flavorful. Overall they were good tacos. They're more authentic (Mexican) and a good size. I am so glad we chose this spot for breakfast tacos again. They now have their own coffees, including abuelita mocha and cold brew. The service was friendly and fast. You order and pickup at the window. There are plenty of picnic tables outside to enjoy your food. There is no inside for customers and most people call in their orders to go. Funnily, I only encountered this place by chance on a morning run. It immediately caught my eye by being hidden away on a side street near UT campus and I'm a sucker for a hidden gem. The very next day I booked it back here and am so glad I did. It was a gorgeous day and being able to sit outside was such a nice vibe. As for the food, I got the steak taco and the breakfast taco with the fried cheese and a large horchata. All of it was amazing. The fried cheese in the taco added a crispy crunch to every bite and a smoky toasted flavor that really elevated it. My husband and I stopped by Vaquero Taquero on our ride today. We drove up, parked, and waited in line at the ordering window. While in line I tried to decide what I wanted. Once it was our turn at the window a nice guy took our order. He asked us what we wanted, wrote down our order, we paid and then he told us it would take about 20 minutes. We were fine with waiting as we found a shaded place to sit under the umbrellas in the outdoor seating area.The seating area wasn't very big as it was a few park bench tables with umbrellas but it worked. People came and went as they got their food or they sat and ate in the shade in the seating area as we did. It took about 30 minutes before we got our food but it was worth the wait. For my food, I ordered the Nopales Taco and the Chicken Tinga Taco. Both tacos were made fresh, very good and full of flavor. The Nopales Taco took me back to my childhood and reminded me of my Grandmother's Nopales. The Tinga Taco was just as good and all of the chicken which was filling. Overall it was a great place to stop. The food is delicious and the tacos are fresh and flavorful. We will return when in the future when in the area. read more

What's really enjoyable are the nopales y huevos (cactus and egg) tacos on flour tortillas - it's not a common thing to have on the menu, and it's done quite well. Stopped by here on a weekday morning to grab some breakfast tacos and coffee next door and it did not disappoint! I ordered the Charro Beans and Cheese Taco and Nopales Tacos with egg on corn tortillas. Both tacos were filled to the brim with filling and the corn tortillas were some of my favorite that I've had. Don't know if they make these in house like the flour tortillas, which I'll have to get a try of next time. My friend ate the charro beans and said it was super flavorful. The Nopales and egg taco isn't seasoned so it pairs nicely with the Salsa Verde (which does have a bit of a kick!). Service was very friendly and relatively quick. read more

When Vaquero Taquero first opened, their food was really good. It was wonderful and oh, so convenient to be able to satisfy our taco cravings within walking distance of home. Fast forward to present day. We had a hankering for tacos and realized we hadn't eaten at Vaquero since the city first shutdown due to Covid last year. Ordered a batch of our favorite al pastor tacos. Got home (two minutes' drive) only to find they were already cold. The flour tortillas tasted odd...slimy would best describe them. Sounds weird, I know. How can tortillas be slimy? The meat was a tad dry. On the positive side, our order was nicely plated, and the pineapple, lime, cilantro and onion were fresh and looked vibrant. I approached the window and with many other things in Austin, don't judge the book, they had me at "HOMEMADE tortillas"! The lady taking the order was so focused on our ordering experience it felt like I was at my grandmas house making plates around the kitchen island. She was so welcoming, fast and attentive. My brother and I ordered the bacon, egg & cheese and chorizo & egg tacos. They were made to order so no worries about cold hard eggs or shells. My brother broke tradition and got one of his on corn tortilla but I stood strong. They came out within a decent amount of time and since they were so fresh, we opted to cop a squat at one of their three tables. There was just enough salsa, two kinds, and the perfect portion for the price. At first I felt that the cost of tacos were a bit steep but when they delivered them, they were extremely hearty, not lacking in flavor or portion. I can proudly say my brother left with the best breakfast taco experience he will have. Being from the Caribbean Islands, he couldn't understand the hype..now he does. The spot is cute, I like the vibe rendered by the bright colors. Ordered just ONE Al pastor taco and it took me about 15min wait at 4:20pm.... I originally wanted to try their breakfast tacos but it's unavailable after 2pm. The Al pastor I got was fine, the sweetness from the pineapple balanced really well with the pork. These are good tacos that are being let down by their tortillas. The fillings are terrific: special shout-out goes to the al pastor, which are sliced off an actually trompo in juicy, meaty strips. The birria, chicken tinga, and rajas poblas were also good, though I wish there were more mushrooms and the serrano peppers a bit crisper in the latter. But these fillings are let down by the tortillas. While it's great that Vaquero Taquer uses homemade tortillas sourced locally, they're pretty limp and blah. There's none of the bite in the tortilla that you might get from Paprika, which fries its tortillas a bit before serving. This is a shame, in part because Vaquero's tortillas are bigger than than those served in other Mexican street-style taco places, so it could be a really great deal. Also a note that I was not given any salsa. I'll assume it's a one-time oversight, but its absence definitely compounded the blah-ness of the tortilla. Overall, a good shop, but one that falls some way short of the best around. A shame, because it's the one closest to me and I really want to visit it twice a week. read more

Authentic Mexican food in Hyde park! I enjoy ordering their Al pastor and Pollo de Tinga tacos. They are not as small as street tacos, but still a very flavorful 6-8 bite taco. They always taste freshly made, so flavorful and remind me of home. The Charro beans are a very good side as well, served soupy and full of flavor. If you're thirsty, a Mexican coke is always a good choice to add to your order, but personally I really enjoy their fruit flavored aqua fresca, the pineapple aqua fresca to be exact. When I found this restaurant, it was a relief to know I could find authentic Mexican food in the area as it now holds a special place in my heart and stomach. I don't really enjoy their Spanish rice so much though, slightly dry and bland unlike my experience with their other menu options. Great spot though! read more

Vaquero Taquero is home to the best breakfast taco I have ever had (and I have made a point of trying a lot of them). Their bacon egg and cheese taco is some kind of magical unicorn that only Vaquero Taquero has truly mastered. It is massive and filling, but not at all overwhelming. Every bite is flavorful, and the salsa that comes with it does an amazing job of acting as spicy way to break up the savory egg, cheese and meat. I love this taco on a corn tortilla, but flour is delicious too! I think about this breakfast taco regularly, as it's become part of my daily routine when in Austin. Vaquero also makes amazing 'non breakfast tacos' if you're in the mood. I love the Bistec Quesadilla on corn (quesadilla here means that the tortilla has cheese melted as an extra shell onto it, and then that cheese tortilla is your soft taco shell), and the Al Pastor Tacos. The guacamole is to die for, perfectly salted, well mixed, and just the right amount of chunky. The staff here are so wonderful, they'll even serve you guac if you run up to the counter (less than) 1 minute before they close (late night cravings of their guacamole are unavoidable with guacamole that delicious). The only bad thing about this restaurant is that they're closed on Sunday and Monday, because honestly I would eat here every day of the week (when I'm in town) if that weren't the case. There's also a coffee truck permanently parked outside, so if you want an espresso with your breakfast taco, they've got you covered! I've always heard great things about Austin's taco scene, and on a weekend trip to Austin I had to stop at one of Austin's highest rated taco shops. Vaquero most definitely validated this claim. I had never had cactus before, but I decided to be ~adventurous~ and opted for the nopales tacos which were an absolute hit. Cactus is "slimier" than I thought, but in terms of flavor, these tacos packed the punch. Definitely worth trying if you've never had cactus before. I also had a bistec quesadilla which seriously impressed me (my friends and I continue to rave about their quesadillas - they were SO good). If I ever make the trip out to Austin, I'll definitely pay this spot another visit and would like to try their guacamole and their other quesadilla options. read more

When she tells you a Mexican restaurant is good, That is like Julia Child telling you a French restaurant is good. You just go. * * * Beverly M recommends the ceviche and the carne asada. I went with my lovely pescatarian wife. She picks what she orders off of what she can eat. I pick what I eat by rolling dice. The carne asada never got tried. The ceviche got eaten by wife only. Make sure the beans are vastly vastly superior. Put in lots of vegetables and have them cooked to a perfectly level of al dente with full vegetable flavor. Add superior bacon cook that to the full flavor point and then stop. Beans are cooked to individual peak without being melted into smoosh. Add the house fire. (More on house fire below). The flavor of the beans changes constantly depending on which vegetables you got in your bite. And the cheese and tortilla don't hurt anything at all, thank you very much. * * * Oh yeah, house fire. Unlike most other Mexican restaurants - dishes here have a distinctive house taste. It is a fine taste. That house taste comes from one particular house sauce that shows up in pots all over the kitchen.
