I read the reviews, noticed they were somewhat a while back; and still decided to give this taqueria a chance. I do not recommend it. The menu price list is not listed. My husband and I ordered steak burritos aka carne asada burritos. The beans were good but for an 11.99 burrito I expected more meat! It should have been priced at a bean burrito with a dash of steak. In addition, the cashier attempted to charge us for tap water $3.99 per drink. Nice girl, but clearly doesn't know how to use the electronic device. The place has a twilight zone feel to it. We drive from Austin to Johnson city regularly and happened upon this place inside Chevron hoping that we stumbled upon a hidden gem. We were so wrong. My husband and I got migas and carnitas and they tasted soooo old. Like they had been sitting out for days, not even hot. And they charged 4.50 for them . My kids got a bean and cheese taco and the cheese wasn't even melted. Such a bummer. We couldn't even finish the food and unfortunately threw most of it out. read more

Some of the best places are little hard-to-find spots and this place is no exception. The staff always seems pleasant and service is quick enough, though not the fastest necessarily. Tacos are pretty good and the flour tortillas rock! The carnitas are a little dry (nothing a little salsa can't help), but the pastor and barbacoa are damn tasty. Guisada is decent too. I could drink the mild red sauce straight from the bottle and the green ain't too shabby either. The horchata is a little sweet, but still good, especially as your ice melts and cuts the sweetness some. Are you the type of foodie that enjoys finding great little places with good food, friendly people and a few dishes you've never tried before? Can you focus on the food and ignore the age and condition of the used-to-be-stuffed bench seats? If you're not uptight about details and don't jump to conclusions about tiny restaurants tucked behind gas stations, you need to give Taqueria La Escondida a try. I was inching my way home from a doctor's appointment on a day when the fog was so bad I couldn't see 25 feet ahead of me - I needed to get off Hwy. 290 and it was lunchtime, so I was looking for the nearest place to stop. I spotted the sign for Taqueria La Escondida and remembered reading positive reviews on Yelp just the day before, so I was thrilled to get off the road and try the place. I didn't spot it at first, but found it tucked behind the Chevron station, so just drive around to the side. First impressions: I grew up in San Antonio back in the Dark Ages. It reminded me of one of the old neighborhood cocinas that used to dot the residential areas of old San Antone - unassuming Mom and Pop eateries that locals depended on for good food without worrying about the surroundings. In other words, don't go there on a first date or anniversary dinner. Do go there on any other day when you're hungry and the rent is due. There was no one there when I arrived except the young lady behind the counter. The case was full of grab-and-go gorditas and tacos - I ignored those and ordered from the whiteboard menu to eat there. There were a lot of choices, most I was unfamiliar with, but they had Chile Rellenos and that is my Holy Grail of choices. I ordered it stuffed with cheese, expecting the usual Velveeta-like filling. I was delighted when she brought me a very large poblano with a light egg batter and stuffed to the hilt with a mixture of fresh Mexican cheeses and sparingly topped with a very flavorful Ranchero sauce. The rice was moist and really good, and the beans went untouched but my husband declared them to be good once he tasted the leftovers I brought home. (SEE PHOTO) The plate came with 4 freshly made flour tortillas and I added a crisp beef taco just because it sounded like a good idea - and it was. I knew I'd better bring something home for my husband or else he'd pout. They have a large selection on the whiteboard menu and a much larger selection on the printed menu, but I don't speak or read Spanish and the print menu is not in English. I threw myself on the mercy of the young lady serving me - she didn't speak much English, but she far exceeded my knowledge of Spanish, so we worked it out. I ordered something with beef and her facial expression told me I'd made a major blunder with that choice, so she pointed to the beef fajita tacos and we had a deal. But he's a big eater and loves Mexican food, so we weren't done... He loves enchiladas and I asked if I could get one beef and one cheese. Again, her face expressed dismay. I don't think she misunderstood me - I think she made an executive decision to override my stupid selection. She sent my husband a beef enchilada plate and covered the enchiladas with queso and red sauce. Along with the rice, beans, and guacamole, my lesser half declared them to be the best enchiladas he's had in a long time. WIN! Per hubby, the fajita tacos were good, but the enchiladas were exceptional - even reheated. I'm certain he will be in heaven when he can go back there with me and enjoy them freshly made. I'm giving them 4 stars. It's more Mexican street food than Tex-Mex, it's not for the person seeking perfect surroundings, and you really need to have some grasp of Spanish in order to truly make some good choices on dishes you may not be used to trying, but dang...I loved the place! I'm going back with a Spanish-speaking friend so I can try some of the stuff I've never heard of before. The name translates to "The Hidden Taco Restaurant" and they really are easy to miss, but I'm glad I finally spotted them. I stopped by for some breakfast tacos today and got a dozen to go - service was quick and friendly, and you can't beat their prices (a dozen tacos plus tip for under 25 bux). I got a variety to sample the different types and ended-up eating 5 myself, so that is probably enough said, but I will reiterate that they make some yummy breakfast tacos. We tried the bacon, potato, sausage, and Mexican egg - all really good. Sadly they were out of the cactus, so I will have to update my review after I sample that. They also have a pancake breakfast which is a nice option you don't always find at places like this, and from what I recall they have a pretty extensive lunch menu as well. Oh yeah, be advised they are closed on Sundays, so Senor Buddies will have to do if you're looking for bfast tacos in the area after church. :) read more

The newest incarnation of this place has some pluses and minuses. No more of that good Chester's Fried Chicken - really a shame. But their tacos are GOOD! The breakfast tacos are a little overpriced, I think, but they are typically fairly generous, most of the time. Love the Huevos Mexicanas, eggs and cactus and the bean and cheese tacos. I am no vegetarian, but I still like these the best. The shrimp cocktail is not good here. The mole - not so much, either. But the breakfast tacos and the lunch tacos are really really good. I just had two carnitas tacos on fresh corn tortillas with plenty of onion and cilantro. They give you enough limes and salsa so they are perfection! They also sell these yummy carnitas by the pound with tortillas and salsa. The guac is good, too. I would stick with the pastor and the carnitas tacos, in corn, made traditional style. YUMMMY! Oh - they also have chicharron, lengua, tripas, and even higado (liver) to put in your tacos, gorditas or whatever. read more

This is a surprising little Mexican bistro, hidden behind a gas station and next door to a liquor store. We've had several meals here, including breakfast and lunch, and it's been really good. Breakfast tacos are hot and tasty, good tortillas, and excellent carne asada and guisada. The venue is a reformed Chester's Chicken outlet that still retains some feathers of days gone by, but the place is very clean and cheerful. If you live in DS, Wimberley, or points west, this is a great stop to pick up some take out on your way home, or to grab a load of breakfast tacos to bribe your coworkers. read more

Drive through rows to order breackfast tacos waited 20min. 2 cactus, 3 bacon, and 1 potato. Did they have to leave to go to the store to buy the ingredients?! All the while I saw people coming in to pick up premade tacos. I ordered a carnitas gordita and it tasted so old, like it had been sitting there for weeks. This is one of the best TexMex places I've had in Austin. It's a tiny place next to a chevron so don't let that deter you! It's authentic and the food is made with love. They also have fresh squeezed juices that are delish. The service is great with smiling folks. The prices are great too. I'm pretty sure they have home made tortillas, but I didn't ask. I was ready to leave as soon as we walked in but my husband convinced me that it looked like it was authentic Mexican food and was most likely delicious. Wrong. I had the chicken soup...and the best thing I can say is that it was probably healthy with the vegetables that were in it. It was tasteless. Both the rice that came with the soup and the side of refried beans that I ordered were room temperature. The chicken dish that my husband had was also bland and also came with room temperature rice. yep, i nice gem to stop at for lunch or breakfast if you're out in the dripping springs area. i've eaten here several times and my favorite is the chicken burrito. they don't fill it up with any rice (like most do) and the veggies and meat are always fresh. Tried to order rolled taquitos and the lady said yes they are rolled tacos. She told me the cost and I said wow thats expensive. She said it was because its fajita chicken. I said change it to shredded chicken. It was cheaper but when I got my order it was wrong, They were regular tacos not rolled taquitos. I have been to the restaurant multiple times. The one reason I been there was for a pokestop and closest place to go for lunch. The food is not the greatest I rated it around average.
