I checked this place out with a friend since it was conveniently a few blocks from some cool bars in the manchaca neighborhood, such as South Austin Beer Garden and drifters social. Initially, we were unsure of what to expect, but the place had good reviews and the food had an authentic feel. Service was great, we were greeted almost immediately and never had to wait to order anything! The salsas were delicious, a spicy green creamy sauce with a kick, and a more mild red sauce with flavor! I also ordered an horchata which tasted sweet but not too overpowering, and the 5 mini tacos, that really hit the spot after a late night out with friends! Definitely recommend checking out if in the area, especially after enjoying the local bars around. read more

We were running some errands on a Saturday morning and decided to pop into Taco Aranda in Manchaca. We decided to get our food to go and unfortunately we had quite a long wait. It wouldn't have been so bad except that there's really not much room in the waiting area. The place is pretty small inside and there really is no place for all the people waiting. They had a consistent line to order food the whole time we were there so it's obviously a very popular place but it would probably be a much better idea to call in your order or eat at the restaurant. We got the three tacos special and a migas plate. My favorite was the potatoes, but overall the food was pretty flavorful. I would definitely eat there again! read more

Got some tacos to go and they were excellent! I ordered the huevos a la Mexicana, huevos con chorizo, and the migas on corn. Generous eggs, great chorizo, and the Mexicana is a must-order taco. Restaurant was clean. Staff was friendly. Definitely want to go back to try some of the plates. The menu looks fantastic. Their salsa and green sauce are both also very good. I used to work nights, and after working nightshift I craved dinner food at 8AM. Taco Aranda has always been willing to make me a fresh chicken fajita burrito at 8AM, no questions asked. Didn't know they offered anything but counter service so I stood in line. Once I ordered and said for here they sent me to a table. Once seated service was nice; got a tea refill and butter delivered for tortillas. Migas were OK; perhaps too many hard tortilla chips. Here I go again complaining about bland fried taters. Checks all the boxes for me, in terms of a good TexMex inch joint: framed pic of Selena, free chips& salsa, Mexican Cokes in the fridge, loads of iceberg lettuce, tasty specials, long-term waitstaff, and it is full of construction workers every lunchtime. All signs that the food is going to be great, cheap,& plentiful. It's cheerful, friendly, and unpretentious. It even has a drive thru! Old Austin in the best ways. I almost always get the chilaquiles with verde sauce and scrambled eggs (they do breakfast all day, which I love) while I encourage whoever I'm eating with to try a special. Since Manchaca has like 5 places to get tacos, this one is in the rotation - particularly because they are heathens that are open on Sundays. Don't hate, because us heathens gotta eat too, ok? From the tacos, to the migas to the horchata - it's all solid - and each time it is served promptly and with a smile. Back in 2006, I was tending bar at Bull McCabes on Red River (original owners) when we heard the bar at the corner was getting a Bar Rescue and theme changed to Steampunk. I'd never heard of that, what was it? Turns out it was a whole thing, with people who loved it and spent thousands dressing up, etc... I've lived in Shady Hollow since 2019 and have never once been to Taco Aranda and I just realized it had a decent following. How did I miss it? Just like Steampunk, this little place had existed for years right under my nose and I never knew about it. Heck, we go to the vet right next door! So, we finally tried it. The staff was awesome, really nice and accommodating. The tripitas taco was crispy as needed and the pastor had a nice flavor. That said, the salsas had really no spice, the barbacoa was a little too much fat for my taste and the tortillas kept falling apart. In fact, they knew this would happen so they double-wrapped the tacos and the tortillas still disintegrated. That alone was worth a star demerit... I still recommend it because I can tell they have a loyal following and that doesn't happen by accident. read more

Tried this place for lunch a few days ago. The parking lot was full so I thought, ok good. This place ought to be great! I walk in. See some people sitting, eating. I see a huge menu hanging over the kitchen/cash register area. So I assumed to go to the cash register to order. The menu isn't extensive and some of the lettering is quite small, so I had to walk up to the barrier and squint to really see. I settled on a beef fajita torta. No sides were provided with this options so I ordered a side of fries and a drink. I go sit down. A waitress brings my drink (an unsweetened tea) with chips and salsa. The chips and salsa were generic, not impressed. My food came rather fast. My torta came first. I took a bite. Meh. The bread was soft and warm (from being toasted). I seasoned the insides with salt but when I do this, I noticed there was only one slice of tomato. The meat was barely there. It's like the meat was just sprinkled on. The pieces were tiny. The lack of meat is what made me upset. There was more lettuce than anything. Then my fries came. I mean they were hot. But they're preseasoned and had that crusty outer layer. Meh. Anyway, I'm out $20. I ate it because I was hungry but I would never return. While I sat and ate, I noticed other groups of people come in. They all sat down. A waitress would come out and bring them chips n salsa. I could hear the people ask for menus. The waitress would direct them to the menu up near the cash register/kitchen. Most people couldn't see and would have to get up and walk to the menu then return to their seats. The people behind me repeatedly asked for menus. The waitress would recite various parts of the menu off the top of her head. There's nothing to indicate when you walk in, you should order at the cash register. Nothing. Tortillas aren't homemade. Beans aren't seasoned. Service is anything but spectacular. Have tried this place every so often over many years as they've changed names and management and I'm more disappointed every time. Idk why I keep trying to like this place when there is mi ranchito and macho taco in spittin distance. Don't waste your time or money for these sorry excuses for Mexican food. read more

I came here at the recommendation of a friend. I ordered a small bowl of menudo with potoles (white corn). I also ordered their burrito. I like menudo a lot. The beef tripes didn't smell as strong. To me this is a good Indication that they cook it correctly. I ordered too much and brought home the menudo. It was a good leftover. I will return to this place again. read more
