This is our favorite bakery in the area for several reasons. There is a wide variety of baked goods to choose from and nothing is too sweet. They make cookies, pastries, breads (pan loaf and hand-formed ones), soups, hand pies, and sandwiches. The variety is amazing. During the holiday season, they offer larger pies and have various seasonal goods to offer. But what's also wonderful is this bakery gives back to the community in many ways. During the height of the pandemic, they offered free bagged lunch to anyone who needed one. They also were (are?) part of the pilot project for Durham's guaranteed income. It looks to me that the owners/company are concerned about being good citizens of the community and that's a great thing. These days, so many companies get bought out by private equity companies. I hope this bakery continues to be locally owned and operated! (Also, generally this bakery isn't offering the very fancy European/European-ish style pastries which is fine by me. The prices are very reasonable, possibly in part because they aren't trying to make their baked goods a "high end" item. There are other good local bakeries that offer "high end" pastries, but they are also much less affordable and for my taste, too rich.) read more

Today I went to the Durham farmers market, and I had a blueberry cream danish. I really enjoyed the danish. It was very delicious, but the customer service that I received was very poor and honestly rude. And honestly, I was surprised that she was acting like that, especially with her own kind of people. (Me being a black woman) , my friend also picked up a weird rude vibe. I hope that she's not at the next farmers market. I should've just asked the other gentleman to get the danish for me instead of her, but overall I did enjoy my danish. read more

I stopped in for breakfast at the ninth Street bakery on a cold, rainy and sleeting morning. The space is really interesting, a large indoor working bakery. The patio for seating people outside is very nice in an urban setting. I tried three things, almond croissant, glazed cinnamon bun, and cranberry orange muffin. The croissant was nice, but not as crispy as it might be. The Cinnamon bun was nice, but there was a lot of glaze on the top. The cranberry orange muffin was excellent. i came here early this morning on a whim, as i happened to be in the area. i was greeted immediately by two friendly faces who were more than willing to be patient with me while i perused the options. they helped me on my journey to choosing a blueberry danish which made my taste buds SING. on top of everything, this place is just CUTIE and i really want to come back next time im in the area. i think next time ill try the scones or the ham and cheese croissant. with a sourdough loaf for later ;) the bakers who helped me at the register did say they get pretty busy around lunchtime, just fyi for those reading! read more

Visiting the area for a race and went looking for a snack after picking up our packets. We wandered by the bakery and were intrigued by the smell. Had a hard time choosing between some bread or cookies, so got both. The bread did not disappoint- chewy, with a subtle nutty flavor. Ate the entire baguette, so a review of the cookies will have to wait. Really friendly staff- looking forward to trying a cinnamon roll after the race tomorrow. read more

I arrived to town in the afternoon with an empty stomach, rather desperate for something nutritious and Ninth Street Bakery came to my rescue with their appealing vegan options. Bonus is that it's located a few steps from the Marriott Downtown, so I was able to get something quick before getting back to a busy work day. Their lentil soup is delicious and it's an enormous bowl for such a reasonable price! It comes with 7 grain bread or crackers and is super filling. Walked over from 21c Museum hotel yesterday to get a late afternoon snack at Ninth Street Bakery and picked up a cranberry scone (staffer warned me it might be too dry for my taste and wanted feedback) and the cranberry walnut muffin (staffer suggested I get this or the blueberry muffin over the scone). I wanted to do a taste test and provide feedback so came back with both. Cranberry scone - 3/5 - definitely dry, which isn't usually an issue for me, it's just that there weren't that many cranberries and I prefer my scones flakier which compensates for the dry nature of most scones (which is why I usually like scones). The scone could have benefited from an orange glaze, more cranberries, flakier pastry. Cranberry walnut muffin - 4/5. I ate the muffin top immediately and enjoyed it, muffin overall a little on the dry side but more full of cranberries and walnuts the ratio overall is good for a muffin. I am eating the leftovers now a day later and it's quite tasty and a good size for a muffin (the cranberry scone is still mostly uneaten by me). I hear the breads are quite good but since I'm here on business and need to get on a plane tomorrow it makes less sense for me to get a loaf. read more

Absolutely freakin' fantastic bread at a fair price. And in honor of Pride Month, they even flour stenciled some of the loaves with LGBTQ+ lettering. How thoughtful and supportive is that? The loaf we got was one of the best loaves of bread I've ever eaten. It toasted so well with a crispy crust but still hearty, bready inside. Great with just butter, or butter and cheese or charcuterie. All I can say is I'm actually glad this place is in Durham rather than Asheville, or I'd be eating basically nothing but their bread. P.S. This place is just simply A-mazing. Came across this place being from out of town during the Holidays. The only thing I could not figure out is the parking situation. There seemed to be a tow truck trolling the area. I realized to park in the Bakery marked spots. I wish they were a little clearer. Anyways, I went in and came across a place that looks like they have fresh bread products all the time. I was a little lost being that it was my 1st time in here. I asked the gal for help behind the counter. I settled for the Turkey on Multigrain with Coleslaw (instead of chips). I also saw the glass case in front of me had brownies. How could I say no to them! The Blueberry danishes looked great also. Hell, everything here looked great. I took a seat behind the high top table and a few minutes later, the food came out. While waiting, I noticed a guy working with a salt-pepper beard (tallish) who seemed to be the gate keeper. He was keeping the line formed to one side. He also told some people to keep their dogs outside and not inside, duh! He needs a raise. He was doing the lords work right there . The food was simple but great. You can tell they use quality ingredients by the way everything tasted. I don't usually get Turkey because it's often dry. This was moist and flavorful. Also, don't sleep on the Coleslaw. It's really delicious. I wish I would have put it inside the sandwich instead of eating it separate. Guess I'll try that next time. I'm also glad I came in when I did because the lunch crowd hit shortly after I came in. This is a fantastic bakery. I'm glad I came across it and will definitely be back this week to try the egg sandwich I saw on the menu. read more

There on a Sunday during a big downtown festival so they definitely had more than the usual business. Counter folks were helpful. Nice venue. However, they'd run out of some menu items so I worked around it. Got my sammich and it was totally unremarkable except for particularly dry and crumbly bread. It wasn't even a roll but sliced thin from a loaf like something off a hospital tray. Nothing special about the meat either. Meh. You're literally a Bakery. Do better. read more

I've been coming here for 20 something years. I love the breads and especially the carrot muffins. Recently I've read that canola oil is terrible as are any seed oils except avocado, coconut and olive. I went to a baker in Vass and she makes all of her delicious stuff without seed oils. I brought this up b/c to Ninth St. b/c I want to continue having their delicious stuff but they weren't very enthused to make the baked goods healthier. It's sad to see a small bakery in Vass far more in tune with the health of their customers than a place like NSB. read more

The best bread! We stop in for our weekly rustic loaf and have it sliced. They have many types of bread and pastries too. Easy to park and run in for what you need. Ninth Street Bakery is a good place for lunch with soups; salads and sandwiches. They have both inside and outside seating. I ordered the egg salad sandwich which was huge. I tried giving half of the sandwich away to a homeless man but the staff wouldn't let me do that so that did leave a bad impression.
