Food was decent. Portions are small. They had a green and red sauce. The green was too salty for my liking but the red was very spicy which I like. What was horrible was the customer service. No one greeted us as we walked in. We were there for a few minutes and still no one acknowledged us. Instead a guy comes up to the counter, not a single word said, and just continuously tapped his pen on the counter while we looked at the menu. Like he was impatient. The al pastor is pretty decent, just wish it had pineapple in the recipe! Truth is, I'm spoiled by the incredible dishes served out by the gods of mobile Mexican cuisine at Long Wharf. The Nextalli truck's al pastor quesadilla is the stuff last meals are made of. Still, I've heard nothing by rave reviews about the tortas at Taqueria Mexico and if I wasn't so horrified by the thought of mayonnaise, I'd probably try one. The restaurant itself is pretty barebones but not in a bad way - it's just simple. Beyond our quesadillas, burritos and tortas, my friend ordered a horchata that was gloriously tasty and made me second guess my bottle of water. Cinnamon, rice milk, vanilla - so, so good. @ Shane H. You should really have done a little bit of research in regards to this restaurant before you knock it. Tacos are indeed authentic Mexican food. Taco Bell tacos on a hard shell are not. Typically tacos in Mexico are served on small soft tortillas. They are rolled when served to hold the toppings in place. That is what the guys are Taqueria Mexico are serving. Everything is 100% authentic. After having worked with cooks from Mexico and also studying culinary cuisines for 2 years I can tell you that this place is 100% authentic. Don't trust my word though. Just do your own research. Onto the review. Taqueria Mexico is located in a small plaza in Wallingford. The owner is always really friendly and makes the best food. There are several employees and out of everyone there is only one that could put a little more effort into making the food. Even his work isn't that bad, however. When first walking into this place you will notice how cramped it is. There are booths and tables and they can get busy during lunch and dinner time. They have snacks and soda from Mexico. Some of which you can find in a grocery store. Others are a bit hard to come by. Everyone is friendly for the most part. Not overly friendly. They seem to rely on how good the food is. Always on point with the service which is nice. Food is excellent. We'll start with the burritos. Mild flavor on the rice and beans in the burritos. The meat is where it's at. Carne Asada is awesome. I'm a fan of the beef head. It's usually really good if not a bit fatty. Hands down the best tasting burrito is the Cochinita. Get it in taco form and its even better. You really just can't go wrong with anything here. They do make sandwiches on Portuguese bread. Toppings are the same as what you can get in a burrito although they do put mayo and avocado on them. I happen to love mayo so it's only natural that I love the sandwiches. Now keep in mind that this isn't Taco Bell. They don't have F*ckin Nacho Cheese or globs of sour cream on anything. Sour cream is available on request but does not get put on anything unless you ask for it. It is not traditional Mexican but since people happen to enjoy it here it is available. Which I think is great for the business. Prices are very cheap. You get a burrito that weighs over a pound for $5. How can you beat that? Served on small corn tortillas with fresh quality ingredients, all of the meat was tender and juicy (and seasoned perfectly). I am a native of California (currently living in Oakland, but I grew up in the mexican food heaven of southern california) and this place saved my life while I lived in New Haven for 7 years. I'm not one for exaggeration when it comes to food, so don't take my words lightly. This place is by far the best and most authentic mexican place that I found in Connecticut. In the land of crappy tacos and burritos with yellow cheese and refried beans, this place stands out as a shining beacon of hope. This place is not only authentic but is tasty. I love their tacos and tortas (mexican sandwiches). You can get a variety of different meats: chorizo, carne asada, pollo, Pastor!, cabeza, barbacoa, carnitas, and more to fill the homemade tortillas. They have really good home made salsa as well. On the weekends they have specials including Pozole and Menudo! They also do other things like burritos, tamale, and quesadillas, all in a different class from the typical taco-bell like mexican joints you find around these parts. It's a little hole in the wall, where you can sit at the booth or at little tables. It's real laid back too. And i love that you just walk up to the cooler and pick out your sodas and enjoy yourself. Pretty good spot. Not quite as good as the Nexcalli/Mexicalli food truck on Long Wharf in New Haven, but they make everything right there in front of you and everything is very good. I like the fact that they offer chorizo sausage as an option in their tacos/burritos, as not every Mexican spot does this. The burritos at $6.50 are plenty filling with choice of meat and rice and beans. The tacos are pretty tiny but at $1.75 each getting three or four still won't break the bank. The hot sauces, both red and green, are very spicy and top notch. I also like that they have Jarritos sodas available. Service is extremely quick and if you're in a hurry you get some really good food that is fairly priced. read more

I'm part Mexican and I swear to god this place? It's the real deal. This IS real Mexican food so if you're used to whatever the hell is in a Taco Bell "taco" you may turn up your nose at the menu. Yes. it's cheap ingredients but if you're familiar with genuine Mexican cooking, it's all cheap ingredients but Mexicans make it into something delicious. For the price, the portions are generous and everything is always well flavored. The Menudo they serve on the weekends is just like what my abuelita would make when I was little. It's hot and delicious and definitely recommended after a weekend of drinking. The burritos are HUGE and definitely tasty. The barbacoca is ridiculously good and the Mexican in me always wants to make it at home after I have it here. IF you're ever in Wallingford and on the lower part of route 5, stop in to this hole in the wall and you won't be disappointed. Oh and FYI to JL: Wallingford doesn't have much of a Mexican population. The Hispanic population in town is mainly Ecuadorian. If you're going to throw shade, I'd fact check first. read more

Delicious, fresh Mexican food. I visit here (at least) once or twice a week when I'm home. Put their green and/or red sauces on everything. Even better, ask for limes too. Apply all generously. Carnivores, try out the beef tongue and chorizo. Vegetarian? No problem. I add avocado and tomato to my tacos and burritos instead. (Just remember to specify you want them meatless.) Came here on a Monday night. We choose it due to the decent reviews, and because it appeared quite authentic which is what we prefer. Well, BIG MISTAKE! Firstly, the place was completely empty- we were the only ones there, 3 hours before closing time. So, you would think we would have gotten GREAT service. We were greeted by unfriendly people who appeared disinterested in serving us. There were several of us in our dinner party, and the foods we got were a chicken torta, beef and chicken burritos, chicken and chorizo tacos and a tamale. Unfortunately, all of us were disappointed with our meals. We found them to be bland, with minimal amounts of meat-quite flavorless. The burrito had tons of tasteless rice, minimal beans and a few scattered chunks of meat- nothing else! In an effort to help with the flavor, I added some "red sauce" they gave in a container with our food. Now, I like very spicy stuff but what they served us was caustic and you couldn't even taste the food after applying it! It went from flavorless to flavorless and fire-engine hot! When we asked about some "milder salsa", they scoffed and said that's all they had. There wasn't even one attempt to meet our needs. In summation, it was overpriced for the poor quality of food you got and unfriendly service to boot-- needless to say, we WON'T be back! It's your standard quick meals like tacos and burritos made with fresh ingredients and a few options you don't see at most other places. My favorite is the pork stomach burrito. Both are equally spicy, which is great for some people but not so great for others. The food is simple and delicious, ingredients are fresh and wholesome, and the prices are more than fair. I highly recommend the tostadas and burritos. Not much to say that hasn't been said. I've always found the service to be excellent, whether it's early in the afternoon or late at night. I do agree with some that there should be more attention paid to the dining area, especially when things get busy, but from what I can see there is no dedicated staff, just the family that does the cooking and serving. Very good burritos at this unsuspecting little joint. If it were any more authentic, you'd need an airline ticket to get home. No hard shells here. Only tortillas, the way it was meant to be. My daughter and I got take-out from Taqueria Mexico this evening. We live in Wallingford and didn't even know that it was here. I read the reviews and we had to try it for ourselves. As you've read, it is a modest little restaurant in a little plaza far south on Rt five. Do NOT be deceived by the size- the delicious smell hits you before you even walk in the door. I do not eat meat, so the owner offered to make me a vegetarian burrito. My daughter ordered chicken burrito. I, thinking of Taco Bell, advised her to order two. Haha! These burritos must weigh about a pound each! This is quantity and quality. The ingredients were all so fresh and delicious. The fresh cilantro and avocado, along with the hot sauce, which was not just hot, but richly flavorful, made this industrial-sized burrito a delicious and nutritious feast. My daughter said the chicken burrito was excellent and loaded with chicken, beans and rice- and not the mushy canned re-fried beans, but the real deal. I was astounded when the total was well-under $20.00. My daughter could not even finish one burrito- it was so much food. I ate half of mine and saved the other half for lunch tomorrow. I wish that they made more vegetarian options, but I will definitely go there again. What a little treasure right here in Wallingford. We would have spent as much money at Taco Bell. I've visited Taqueria Mexico three times, all around the lunch hour. Somewhat surprisingly, the place was nearly empty. You order at a counter that looks like something out of the typical diner. The staff is friendly and patient. As for the food, it's good but not amazing. As others have said, the burritos are weighty and a lunch on their own. The tacos are with soft tortillas and are packed. The meat is well-cooked, but not overly seasoned or all that spicy. There is flavor, but it's not overpowering. As for pricing, the food is cheap. If you are looking for quick and affordable food, this is the place. Overall, this is a decent lunch spot. You can tell this place is authentic because they don't have any sombreros or ponchos on the walls. I'm serious. The only thing that hints this place is Mexican (other than the menu) is a small picture on a wall of a Mayan temple. Except for the celantro, the tacos and burritos are kinda bland until you put on the hot sauce. They have a red sauce and a green sauce. Both are very HOT. Most authentic Mexican spot I have found in ct. They have a simple menus of tacos, burritos, tortas, quesadillas, tostadas plus pozole and menudo on the weekends. They have a verity of meat to choose from. All very tender, juicy and well season. The best part for me is their salsa. If I go through WallyWorld (Wallingford for the uninitiated) my co-workers demand that I stop in and get them their [authentic] Mexican Food fix. 20 to 30 tacos and a few burritos is the normal order so I call ahead first. I eat here on Saturdays too when in the area because they have stuff not available during the week. I know, and I know you know the food is good from all the other posters above, but . . . They Are Expanding! freakin' yay. Now I don't have to cram into a tiny booth with no leg room. Oh ya, the sauce rocks, and the Pepsi from Mexico tastes better than the domestic stuff.
