After 4 visits here, I finally feel like I'm equipped enough to lay down the right review for the TT. This restaurant, being in the middle of downtown Gainesville, has some serious curb appeal! The sidewalk patio is a great option if the weather is good, but if not, the indoor seating is trendy, comfortable, and inviting. For appetizers, their guacamole is one of the best ones I've ever had...seriously. Their bowls and salads have been excellent, and I will try other dishes as time goes along. I work in the square so I'm usually dining here for lunch. At first it was my go-to until the food quality started to become less appetizing. I usually get the fast-east bowl but lately the lettuce salad they add on top comes out old as it if it was from another day. I'm usually very understanding but after getting sick from it twice, i quit going. Unfortunately i really liked Michelle at the bar but to prevent getting sick, i stopped going. Ordered to go the Tsunami trio, got a side of rice and beans and they wrote "so sorry, no rice tonight" on my beans container and then did not offer any alternative to not giving me part of my side that I paid for. I didn't check my order before leaving so I got home to find I had been given no other food in replacement. The actual tacos I got were not really that good, very basic. We also ordered the bowl and it was dry and missing the sauce, and oh yeah, it had RICE in the bowl! The service was exceptional. Our waitress was attentive and the food came out quick and hot. I tried the trio plus one which was three soft shell tacos and a side of yucca fries. The taco list is a long list of interesting ingredients. I tried the fried cauliflower taco with a vinegar slaw, carnitas, and the veggie taco. All three were good, the veggie one being the least flavorful. I have to say I have never had yucca fries but was glad I ordered them. Tried TT the first time with friends who loved it and knew I was a foodie. Got here didn't look packed but had to wait they said 5 min and we were the only ones waiting. I guess we needed reservations because several four tops came in after us and we're immediately seated so I know better next time but it ended up taking 20 to 25 minutes before we were seated, but we were OK because we are enjoying each other's company, but it was a long time seemingly and we were still the only ones waiting for a table Is in the booth in the back, and the waiter showed up fairly quick and got our drink order and brought the menus. My friends kind of knew what they wanted but really peruse the menu to see what something new they could try and recommend me. The initial iced tea and a beer Came within 10 minutes, but the waiter was a little preoccupied most of the night and it kind of went downhill from there. When we are ready to order, it did take about 10 maybe 15 more minutes before the waiter came back to get our order and my friends needed more tea and I was ready for another beer and that's when it took a while. We ordered appetizers with the drinks those came after about 30 minutes just edamame And fried cauliflower. I kind of expected those within 5 to 10 minutes max. Actually I forgot about them. They were brought up by a server not the waiter, but we kept seeing the waiter go to other tables, getting selfies and spending a lot of time socializing walking by us multiple times still waiting on more iced tea and another beer and the food came and the food was good it was not Anything I would write home about, but I liked the idea of the trio and the quadruple choices and by then we were out of drinks again. We begin eating, and again we were pretty thirsty after a while, and my friends were out of iced tea again so we even moved our glasses over to the end of the table and ended up telling the waiter literally eight times can we get more tea? We need more ice tea... we were all very patient and just glad to see each other which saved another star deduction when my friend finally had to get in the waiters face and said I've asked for iced tea several times can you get it now and he finally got it. By then my friends are now apologizing to me for bringing me to a place that they love and I was OK with, but the service was definitely provided by a waiter a little bit to preoccupied with himself and his social activities. I'm giving four stars because the place was clean and I know my friends have been there before and been happy so maybe just a bad night for the waiter or just a bad waiter. That happens. Unfortunately he was the one that paid the price as my friends picked up the bill and did not tipping , which we all hate to do but if you don't get a tip, it is not a reflection of the food. It's a reflection of the service. When you're trying to Marie good food with good service to get good results, pick the right people. I'm a nice guy, so I'm giving four stars because I don't think it's proper to rate the place simply based on the behavior of one waiter, who just wasn't in the the game. There are so many places now downtown Gainesville to pick from and I've tried several and been very impressed and the old standby like collegiate grill which I used to go to in the 80s for lunch and it's still right there near the corner. Downtown was packed we had to park on the fifth floor of the parking garage, which took us quite a while, parking and leaving but no worries there it's Gainesville it's up and it's all new. It looks great, you need to come downtown and see the new Gainesville. I've been here 40 years and now that I live in Winder it was a treat to go downtown and we still enjoyed our evening so I do recommend the restaurant the food was fusion Asian and Latin American if I could put a definition on it agreed to the choices now available downtown. Wow! I'll start there. I'm not sure what our hesitation was or expectations were when overlooking this place previously but I would highly recommend this place if you're looking for something new and nice! We were dressed up and it was lunch time so my wife, daughter, and I stopped in for a late lunch on a Friday. The service was amazing. Very friendly and welcoming as we stated it was our first time visiting. We had appetizers (fresh guacamole and chips), cocktails (watermelon mojito), main courses (tacos, and a noodle salad bowl). Stopped in for lunch with a couple of friends, first time eating here for all of us. We were seated immediately and our waitress explained the menu and took our drink orders. Ordered a couple appetizers and mains, both of which were out in a very timely fashion. Kudos to our waitress on the perfect timing between the apps and mains. As for the food we shared an order of the avocado egg rolls and the Asian nachos. Must admit that I'm apparently not a fan of hot avocado but the Thai sauce that they came with should be bottled and sold in stores, wow yum. The nachos were actually probably my favorite item that we had, who knew that wontons made the perfect nacho chip? For the mains, I had a Trio with the Zing taco, tofu taco and the cucumber salad for my side. Honestly I wasn't a fan of either taco or the salad, having said that the others in the group had all opted for the tempura shrimp tacos, Aloha tacos and the BBQ short rib tacos which were apparently all very good. As for their sides, everyone else got the garbanzo bean salad which everyone throughly enjoyed. All in all giving it four stars and will definitely go back to try either the other tacos or perhaps a quesadilla along with those nachos. I have come into this spot a few times since they opened (Nov 2022) which was recently! Concept and atmosphere: This restaurants concept is Latin- Asian fusion, and I think given the perimeters and location, they do it well. I have ordered a quite a few items here as well and all have met my expectations, especially for pricing and convenience. They also feel like they have somewhat healthy options which are hard to find, especially for maybe $20 getting a full meal and drink. I also enjoy the modern atmosphere and the bar, including the service of the staff, servers and bartenders. Ticket times are usually pretty quick too, making it a convenient spot for Togo's. Parking: Because it is located in the square, there is adequate parking all around the restaurant. And if parking is not available in front, it is directly next a free parking deck directly behind it, making it pretty easy to get to on most occasions. Drinks: I have ordered the Samurai Sling: It is a Japanese vodka with lemon and black cherry. They also balance it out with a simple syrup and sparkling cava making it a wonderful fruity and cirus-ey vodka drink. It also came out really pretty. (Photo attached.) I also have ordered Spicy Pina: It typically comes with a Ghost tequila, but I substituted for a jalapeño tequila, paired with pineapple, agave nectar, and a chili lime salt rim. I enjoyed the warm fruity flavor, and it was also presented well. But mine did not come with the salted rim I was hoping for. (Photo attached) Food: I have ordered the Noodle Salad: This comes with strips of marinated steak, chilled noodles, mango, cabbage, tomatoes, carrots, green onion, avocados, and chopped peanuts with a Thai peanut sauce. Although I loved the taste of the steak, I felt there wasn't really quite enough for the bowl along with some of the other parts of the noodle salad. The flavor was also good, but I felt it was a little lack luster and bland. But overall I did enjoy this! I have also ordered the Shanghai Shrimp Salad: This I also enjoyed in similiar ways, coming with tasty grilled shrimp, lettuce, tomatoes, edamame, avocado, poblano peppers, corn, topped with rice noodles. Also totally good and priced well. But I feel similiarly in that the add ins were done a little light handedly, and the lettuce was mostly stalky and cut a little too big for comfortable eating. Overall though I enjoyed it as well. (I put the Santa Fe Ranch on my salad) Tsunami Trio: Although it sounds like three tacos, it is two tacos of your choice and a side! For my choice of tacos, I got one KFC (Korean fried cauliflower) and one Thai Chicken Taco. I enjoyed both of these especially the KFC, but I wish the taco shells had been warmed a little bit so they were more flexible and tasted better. The sauce with the KFC was also very tasty and the guacamole as well was an adequate amount. The Thai chicken taco also had a tasty Thai peanut sauce and I enjoyed the slight crunch of the vegetables in it. I would order more off of their various fusion taco menu, as they all seem pretty interesting and tasty. My side was the cucumber salad. And I did enjoy this, my only complaint was their was a little bit too much water pooled in the bottom of the cup. I have also ordered the Poke Bowl. I also enjoyed this, it is pretty well balanced, the cuts of fish tasted fresh, and I enjoyed the flavor. It was a little more of a vinegar flavor than I'm used to in a poke bowl which I believe is from the cucumbers, and I do wish there was a little more of a choice on the mix ins, but for the price it's unbeatable in this area and I would absolutely order it again. Desserts: I have ordered the S'mores egg rolls: I liked the concept and the flavor but they were too crunch y and didn't have Al enough filling, which I feel may have melted too much from the cooking. But I enjoyed the concept. I have also ordered the churros: These however were just the right amount of crunch but chewy for my taste, and the ice cream was appealing and tasty with the cinnamon sugar topping. Overall I enjoy this spot and would reccomend it to anyone looking for a laid back modern and different experience. Not too fancy either but still nicer than your usual lunch spot. And it doesn't really break the bank. I also want to give a shout out to Michelle, who has bartended/served for me twice now and has given me an enjoyable experience on both occasions. If you have made it this far, thank you for reading my review. As a summary, everything here is priced adequately and it is a laid back but nice customer experience. This place is great! I love their menu, I love the location--even though it requires street parking because it's on the square, the ambiance is great, and service is great as well. There can be a wait, especially on weekends but the Square is a great place to walk around and wait for a table. The food is great--I've never had something I didn't like. The thing about Taqueria Tsunami is if you know their menu then you'll know what to get, and it'll be delicious. Sometimes you wander and try and get something different and it's average. The beef empanadas pictured here is an example of that... they look great but unfortunately they don't have any flavor. Luckily it does come with a sauce which is tasty. Their Asada Zing Taco is alright, it is tender which is appreciated but I wish it had more flavor. The Aloha taco is a grilled chicken teriyaki taco and has some great flavors BUT where the money is at on the taco side is their PACIFIC RIM TACO Grilled Chilli Crusted Mahi topped with lettuce, Pico de gallo, and their hoisin lime aioli.... it's so good!! Their BAJA taco which is also fish is great as well. Their quesadilla is not impressive looking but it has a good flavor or with their short ribs option. Their fried yuca is a GREAT side. The biggest winner on their menu (along with the pacific rim taco) is their KOREAN FRIED CAULIFLOWER... can't recommend this enough This location in Gainesville is very clean with a neat set up. Their servers are very nice and treat you very well. Parking here cam be a problem if you atop by at peak hours BIT the addition of the parking decks is helping on the downtown Gainesville area. All in all, good spot with a few very good menu items. You can order 1 taco if you want to experiment and try something new, you van get a duo or a trio if you go in and already know what you like. First visit. No pics tonight although it all looked very tasty and was indeed tasty. We started with two appetizers, the Avacado cilantro egg rolls and the empanadas with short rib inside. Dipping sauces for everything that added flavor. Nice start, next we had the steak quesadilla, with tots and queso with jalepeno chunks. So tasty. The ladies had the tsunami trio with the pacaific rim, Korean carnitas, Azada zing with fried yuka. All plates were empty and the flavor was awesome.
