We ordered in from here a while ago while in DC -I forgot to post. It was fabulous!!! The guac n chips were a HUGE HIT that everyone enjoyed and loved. We ordered a few times on different days as it became addictive when we all wanted a snack/ lunch or a late dinner upon arrival. besides the guac and chips, we ordered quesadillas some other dishes & everything was very authentic and everyone seemed to love it! I pulled up to Taqueria Xochi's grand opening in Navy Yard to check them out, and I actually had a great time! They're a truly authentic Mexican spot, so no substitutions, no sour cream, and no flour tortillas. Which was definitely an adjustment for me lol. We braved the cold temperatures and ventured out to this restaurant last night. I was glad that they were even open because we did actually walk about ten blocks to get here. The place was warm and inviting when we walked in, and we were led to a table off to the side. There were a few customers which was good because the restaurant was peaceful and quiet. Their menu had a lot of food items that I was familiar with, and I ultimately decided on the enchilada platter. It came with two chicken enchiladas with Spanish rice, and a choice if red or green salsa. Based on my experience, it's always the green salsa that is less spicy. The enchiladas we're good, and I really enjoyed the rice as well. I ordered a horchata drink which has always been one of my favorotes. read more

The birria comes in lots of forms and for some reason, I ordered the torta--I don't think I've ever had a torta before and I'm glad I did! The bread is both crispy and light/fluffy. The birria came with a side of consome. I also got a side of chips and guacamole with the mild green salsa - let's just say I am weak and this feels like medium to me! Plenty of food for at least two meals which is nice because food prices everywhere are up. I ordered while my hairdresser at the Burrow was finishing up my hair -- order took all of 10 mins to make. I've been dying to go to this spot for a long time because of all the amazing things I hear. Luckily I was leaving a show at 9:30 club and needed dinner so we had to come over. Online ordering times varied and reached up to 60 minutes every time I checked so I had to wait until it got down to 30 minutes. It was a Friday so not surprising. We ordered the Pork Belly Chicharron with Guacamole, Tacos Dorados, Beef Quesabirria, and the Lamb Birria Tacos. Pick up was easy aside from parking so make sure someone can get out and grab it. They have a dedicated pick up window so it made things simple. Everything smelled so good so we had to bust something open. At first I thought the Chicharron was pricey but we got a take out tray with three huge fried slabs of pork belly that was perfectly meaty, crispy, and fatty. I would've opened the guacamole in the car but it was too messy. When we did get home though, that guacamole was also delicious (and also came in a big container. The Tacos Dorados were heavily topped with crema, salsa verde, lettuce, and queso fresco. Inside was stuffed with chicken. The chicken wasn't super flavorful but the extra salsa on the side really brought it together. The Lamb Birria Tacos were really good. I did get the ingredients separated for travel which worked out great. Wish I had more tortillas and cheese but still good. The Beef Quesabirria was so flavorful and cheesy. The beef was very tender. The consomme was also very flavorful. The place lived up to the hype for me. Anytime I'm around U street I will be making a stop here. read more

I've been to Taqueria Xochi about 4 times and the quality of food isn't as good as it used to be. The hidden taco and sandwich shop is quietly tucked behind Service Bar, take-out only through the window. The vegetarian cemitas sandwich oozing with oaxacha cheese was stuffed in between large thick chunky slices of eggplant slapped with mayo and avocado, tomato, and onions. Glad I requested no hot sauce (it has a spicy kick!). The sandwich was super messy like Sloppy Joe's and fell apart within a few bites. The seasoned battered fries were soggy and sadly didn't come with ketchup. The Manganada smoothie was good, but the Chamoy has a bold sour flavor and overpowers the mango. After taking a sip, I threw in the towel and asked for a mango smoothie without chamoy (the staff kindly gave me a 50% discount). So much better! The app doesn't allow orders to be customized so add a comment at the bottom under special instructions (no chamoy or hot sauce, etc). I would come back for the Manganada smoothie, hold the chamoy! read more

My guy and I stopped by here before heading to the zoo lights when we came to visit DC back in December. We did eat our tacos in the car haha so I cannot comment too munch on the restaurant ambiance but it was packed when we looked at it (we ordered at their to-go window). My guy ordered 3 steak tacos (not pictured) and enjoyed it. I had 1 (we switched 1 of tacos with one another) and that steak was very tender & yummy. They put nopales and sweet onions on the taco which I thought was a very nice touch. Now on to the start of the show - the lamb birria tacos. Oh my goodness! Look at the photo - it does it justice. You see that melt? Lol Seriously though - the meat was so soft and juicy. The consume was perfect. Everything about it satisfied my taste buds. I highly recommended trying them if you haven't already. I ordered the beef quesabirria, which is $16 for three tacos and consomme (pricy but honestly pretty standard for DC). On the one hand, service was fast and friendly, pickup from the window was easy, and the order was packed well for travel. The tacos are large and generously filled. On the other hand, the meat and the consomme were both virtually flavorless. The texture was great! The meat was cooked well! But it was just completely bland. Taqueria Xochi is certainly delicious and a welcome addition to a much needed authentic Mexican food scene in DC. They're certainly known for their birria tacos which is what we ordered. The meat was tender and juicy with delicious consomé on the side. We also got the chorizo nachos which were perfectly spicy and addicting. I thought the esquites were good, but not great. The tres leches can't be missed as it's perfectly sweet and decadent. The guacamole is good, but I've had better. The only issue is the cost. I know inflation is a thing but our meal was about $100. They're take out only but charge you lots in fees even if you're just doing pick up. The fees alone would keep me from ordering again because I don't like restaurants doing that, especially since you can only order online. I might be back, might not, but the food is good! read more

I HAD A BONE IN MY TACO!!! There was a bone in my taco on the FIRST bite! And it wasn't like a flimsy bone - it was thick. I don't know how they missed that. I guess that means that they use real meat lol? As far as the tacos go, they look much tastier than they actually taste. I was expecting an explosive flavor by the looks of the tacos, but it was very mild. The cheese did melt very nicely with the carne. In addition though, the tacos were not as crispy as I was expecting either, but I think that had to do with them sitting in their own juice, and the steam of the container while it was being delivered. The consome was delicious! I wish I had more of that. Not sure if that's birria soup, but it was goooddd. I was really exited to try this place because it has a lot of good reviews. Unfortunately my experience was just ok. We ordered lamb birria tacos, carne asada tacos, a cheese quesadilla and guacamole and chips. The meat in both taco orders was so dry and flavorless that the consome couldn't really save them. The tortillas were also quite dry. The quesadilla cheese in the quesadilla was good but it was also very dry. The best part was probably the homemade chips and guacamole, but the chips tasted like they could be fresher. The food was also overpriced and I was disappointed that although Doordash delivers for them through toast tab you can't order directly through Doordash so I couldn't take advantage of reduced fees with dashpass. So, I ended up spending about double what I think this meal should cost. Overall the meal was underwhelming and I've had much better food at a couple of local food trucks. I'm glad I tried it to get it out of my system since I keep hearing good things, but too many other options in the area to return. read more

They are located in an amazing area where there's a lot of bars, they stay open late, they provide great deals, and their food is incredible! This place gives elevated Taco Bell vibes in the way that they have a few different meats and you can get them in whatever format works for you - tacos, nachos, fries, Birria, cemitas, mulitas, tortas - you get the idea. The food takes about 20 min to get. They don't have seating. It's a takeout window. but the birria taco with The consommé was so savory, meaty, warm, and fatty. The "Chicken Cemita" is amazing! Every bite was packed with flavor, I didn't expect it to be packaged so cute! With the "Chips & Guacamole" and "Taki Esquites" on the side, it was actually the perfect meal. AND THEN THE "Mangonada" JUST TOPPED IT OFF! Their customer service is just as great as their food, everyone I've ever spoken to there is so sweet. Honestly. The tacos are just ok. I was not impressed. I'm Mexican so I know how they should taste and they lacked flavor/spices that our food has. To say the least they were dull. This is a TO GO only establishment. The second issue that I had was that you can't mix and match tacos. You have to get all one kind and if it's your first time here then you won't get to try different tacos. The Birria consume: disappointing. It had rice, garbanzo beans and corn which is not traditional. I get it they want to switch it up a bit which is great but please put that on the menu so we know Wang to expect. The Tacos: they were dry. We got the Al Pastor also known in some places as Adobada. All you get is the tacos. No rice, no beans. The Salsa: what makes a taco is the salsa. The green salsa was watered down and wasn't spicy. The red salsa had no kick. Also watery. The guac: the Guac was good but I couldn't really see or taste anything other than avocado. Lastly, the corn. The corn was my favorite thing. It got soggy when I got to it but it was good. I would have liked more cheese but that's personal preference. You can decide for yourself but if you ask me, I recommended Mezcalero in Colombia Heights. The lady on the sticker is cute and all but the portions are small and expensive. read more

Gave this local spot a try after seeing pictures of the food online. I wanted to love it but found the food just ok. We got the beef quesabirria and the lamb tacos - both were ok but I wish they had more toppings. It left much to be desired. The corn esquites I found to be a bit too spicy. And the mango drink also had too much of the red spice added as well. In addition to the taste, the portions were also fairly small and the plates are generally not a good value for the food. Lastly, the app auto added a large tip to the order in a way that wasn't obvious which I didn't appreciate and only realized after we paid. Wouldn't go back honestly. read more

The Esquites ($8 for large size) are so addicting-- 100% MUST ORDER!!! They have the perfect amount of spice and each component compliments each other to create a mouth-watering side dish! The large size was great for sharing among 3 people. I also ordered the Horchata ($5), which was super sweet. I probably won't order it again, but it was still delicious. They have long wait times so I suggest getting your order in early. I ordered the Lamb Quesabirria and loved it! Obviously, if you're not a cheese fan - stay far away from this menu item. The meat is tender and the tacos are filled up with meat. This taco is meant to be consumed hot and tastes best that way. I reheated mine once I got home and it was so much better than the cold one I scarfed down in the car. They give plenty of consommé so I definitely had leftover I also ordered the esquites, which is elote without the cob. I feel like the corn comes from a can, but don't quote me on that! I ordered Tacos de Tinga, Tacos de Carnitas, and Guacamole. I tried to order the birria tacos, but as I'm allergic to dairy they informed me there is chocolate in the birria. As a fair warning, I am from Los Angeles and pride myself on knowing and enjoying good tacos. Unfortunately, I was not thrilled, which is not to say others would not like it. The Tacos de Tinga were good but not spectacular. The Tacos de Carnitas were not good. I had a tough time eating these. Part of the reason why was the cut of pork used. You could taste the flavor of the pork itself outside of the carnitas flavor, which I don't love. I've experienced this in other cuisines too, which is why I recognized this was due to the cut of pork. I wish I could have tried the birria, but unfortunately not a huge fan of these other tacos. read more

Excellent. As a person who has enjoyed a lot of different kinds of authentic Mexican tacos, these are some of the best I've had. The chicken in the tacos was incredibly flavorful and tender. I also tried the birriah tacos, which were incredible. I was visiting with my family, and my mom said these were the best birriah tacos she's ever had, and she's had a lot of them! Service was quick and the staff are very kind and visibly enjoy the work they do. The atmosphere is incredible, music loud enough to be heard but you can still hear the person next to you. Overall, I had an excellent experience! * edit, on our second visit before heading back home, who we're assuming is the manager of the establishment gave us our chips on the house, which was incredibly kind. I ordered Tacos el Pastor, which is always a good judge of Taco character in my opinion and they were frankly delightful. I'm so sad to have to take off a star for this but have to stay honest! Ordered from here for one thing and ONE thing only, the BIRRIA TACOS! So placed our order online at 642pm with estimated readiness for 755pm (see screenshot of order). Unfortunately this was delayed to 830pm. The extra wait was disappointing especially after a long day at work and not having eaten during that shift. They handed out some Tres Leche as we waited which I greatly appreciate, it was DELICIOUS. To eat, I had the quesabirria lamb tacos and .... they were okay :/ don't come at me! They were well fried and crispy (slightly too greasy), but just lacked flavor. We had 3 dipping sauces and the consome dipping sauce was also just ok (the order 2 sauces were needed). However I had to work hard to figure out the right amount of mixing of the sauces to bring out the flavors of the tacos. Otherwise just bland. The taco itself was definitely filled full with lamb and cheese and all those other things. There were 3 tacos and the meal was filling! Despite this slight wait disappointment, will definitely return and try other things Just keep in mind the wait.
