I called ahead and ordered carryout from here. This was the first time trying this restaurant. I had friends who told me the restaurant was good. My husband and I ordered the general tso's chicken, the tempura shrimp bento box, spring rolls, and the rock shrimp appetizer. Everything was packaged neatly in two packages for me to get it out of the restaurant. When I got it home and opened everything up everything was nice and piping hot and everything was as I ordered it nothing was missing. My husband thought the general tso's was too salty and he was not a big fan of the rock shrimp as it was too sweet for him. I pretty much liked everything and that I got. My shrimp was nice and crispy and I liked the flavor, crispy spring rolls, and a California roll along with Crispy crab rangoon. We will try this place again, my husband will just order something. Came here for lunch. Everything was fresh and hot. I got a chicken hibachi and a salad. My husband got 3 rolls salmon, tuna and avocado and spicy tuna. He said everything he got was really good too. We met an out-of-state friend for dinner and landed here at the half way point. The town is super cute, but save the sightseeing for after dinner, you will want to get here early. The location is Teeny tiny, with only a handful of booths but does not feel cramped once seated. It seems to be a family business as their sweet little children were playing in the booth closest to the kitchen and helped deliver sodas at times. The ambiance was laid back and comfortable. I've never been to a Japanese restaurant and was excited to try something new. We got crab Rangoon appetizers and they were consistent with any other I've ordered. We ended up trying the hibachi meal that comes with soup and salad. We tried Miso Soup and our friend substituted clear soup. I've never had Miso soup so don't have anything to compare it to but it was DELICIOUS! And the salad was a small portion with a delicious dressing. No idea what it was but I loved it. I was worried I'd be full from the soup and salad but the food took a LONG time to come out. We were not in a hurry and had plenty of time to catch up. When the food came out there was so much!!!! And it was SO good!!!! I got the filet, my fiancé got the strip steak and our friend got chicken. All were equally delicious. If it would've been proper I would've licked the plate! The restaurant was clean, and if I were basing this on the kindness and attentiveness of waitress this would be a five. That being said, I love miso soup and their soup just was not good. It was warm, and the tofu was soft but the kale or whatever green was in the soup was chewy and the broth flavor was just not "normal" miso soup. The crab rangoon was amazing. The hibachi chicken with double vegetables was fair. The chicken was very heavily peppered, but the sauce was good. The veggies were great, I loved the carrots and zucchini....but the veggie mix was mostly onions. I like onions....but I swear an entire onion was on my plate. Finally tried this place, a real surprise, a hidden gem in little ole Greensburg. I had the crab cakes and a assortment dish of sushi. It was excellent! When you go, try the crab cakes. Do not go here if you just wanna pop in for a quick meal. They make everything fresh and some dishes take awhile. I went on a Wednesday evening and the place was packed and had a pretty steady stream of people coming in for take out. I was pleased to see them doing such a good business. This is a family operated business, the service was excellent, I suspect the waiter was the son. He had a great attitude, he was attentive without being over bearing and he was working his butt off. I was told that the place is expensive, I didn't find that to be true. There were 3 of us and the total bill was $70.00, We were full and had plenty of left overs. $70.00 isn't bad at all for 3 adults eating fresh hand made sushi in Indiana. My brother and I dined here for lunch on a Friday. The restaurant was busy with dine in and take out orders but we were seated immediately and given drinks and appetizers quickly. We ordered the edamame, chicken teriyaki bento box, and the shrImp tempura bento box. The bento boxes came with your choice of miso soup or salad. I had the salad, which had an amazing ginger dressing. My brother had the miso soup, which he really enjoyed. It also came with fried rice, California rolls, and crab rangoon. Everything that we ordered tasted great and was brought out quickly. I really have no complaints except that the restaurant was cold inside; both my brother and myself kept our jackets on. This was my first visit to Tarouya. It's sort of a hole in the wall version of Japanese restaurant. I ordered the Beef Teriyaki Bento Box and he ordered the Imperial Hibachi (Shrimp, Chicken and Steak). The garden salad and soup were very good. The ginger dressing was great. I liked the look of the Bento Box but let's break down each part. The California Roll (4 pc) was spot. The fried rice was okay but was good fried rice, I just wish it had more veggies and egg. The Teriyaki Steak was very sweet...maybe a little too sweet for me but it's supposed to be. And it was a lot of steak. Finally is the Crab Rangoon was the absolutely best part of this entire meal! It was hot, very full and perfectly crispy. I could have eaten a dozen of theses beauties! Thankfully the Bento Box comes with only two so I couldn't over indulge. Oh yeah, he said his Hibachi was good too. :) My only real complaint is that I ordered a white wine and never got it...I think she just forgot it and I already had iced tea. An absolute staple in my menu of favorites. This hidden gem in middle America is a surprise all-star! Excellent sushi and extreme attention to detail and presentation. This was the worst food I have had in a long time. Service was fine. Food came out fast. The staff was helpful polite and understanding when I ate none of the food. The food breakdown goes like this: I ordered the chicken teriyaki bento box. The friend rice was actually quite good not greasy and still a bit sticky. Good by my book. The crab Rangoon had no crab flavor in them whatsoever. It was only deep fried cream cheese. They tasted like something from the state fair instead of fried seasoned crab wonton. It was fried well just no flavor. The biggest disappointment was the main dish. The chicken had texture like it was cooked 2-3 days ago. The teriyaki sauce on it was so thick it behaved something similar to glue not sauce. Though it was sweetened it didn't taste anything like teriyaki. The vegetables in the sushi roll that came with the bento box tasted old. The appetizers The salad was what I have come to expect a mayo and ginger dressing on cold crisp iceberg. The miso was standard. Most likely kikomans brand powdered tofu miso soup mix. Which I like just fine and I expect in most places. The take away: I will never eat there again and have already told my family to never go. I have never refused to eat a meals a restaurant before. It's a small, quaint dining room and all the booths are pretty secluded from each other, which gives it a cozy, intimate feel. We arrived at around 4:30 and we were seated after a short delay, not knowing what to do. Finally someone from the restaurant came over and directed us to a booth. The menu is pretty standard Japanese fair. I ordered the sushi and sashimi bento box, which included a small tossed salad, miss soup, fried rice, and the bento. I thought this was a fantastic bargain for $11.99 and a great opportunity to try several of the items they offer. There was plenty of food...enough that I even shared with my husband. It was average. The major issue I had with the meal is that it took 45 minutes for our main dishes to arrive. This was very disconcerting. Even the people who ordered carry out and came in while we were waiting for our meal had to wait several minutes for their food. Luckily, people didn't seem to mind. I gave this a five star for several reasons. The most important is the food is great. You have to like this particular kind of cuisine. I don't give bad ratings if it wasn't my thing. I just cover that in the review. The atmosphere was really nice for taking an old building that was a bar to create a great eating environment. Whenever I get food from here the people are all really nice and helpful. I also like that it is something different in a small town from the usual.
