I've tried their Sour Green Apple, and Cherry slushies. As well as the banana split, they tasted pretty great honestly. The service was good, it was kind of crowded when I went which made it difficult to order, but the place is very cute, it gives me memories to ice cream parlors I'd go to as a kid. Tasty Twist is a local favorite! They have a different soft-serve flavor of the day (today it was cappuccino, my personal favorite is the coconut) and the hard ice creams are predictably good (there's something in the cooler for everyone). I have an allergy to artificial sweeteners and whenever I'm a touch paranoid, they have no problems helping me out with ingredients. Tonight we went in around 8pm and there was a line outside to come in! Due to COVID, they allow 5 people inside at a time and ask that you wear a mask and respect their one-way doors. Ice cream is always good. Clean. The staff (I believe two of the owners especially) are some of the most unfriendly and unhappy people I have ever come upon in the service industry. The customer service I experience was terrible. Went in and asked for a small twister with brownies and cookie dough. Only received my twister with brownies, so I kindly asked for the worker to add cookie dough (because I had previously asked for it). I was extremely apologetic and thanked her multiple times, yet she was extremely disrespectful towards me. She aggressively threw the incorrect twister in the trash and made the new one in an angry manner. Not to mention, the new twister had hardly any toppings added and was filled about only 3/4 full. I understand remaking it might've been an inconvenience, but there was no need for the rude attitude. I will not be coming back to this location. read more

I don't think I've ever had soft serve as thick and creamy as the one at Tasty Twist. Staff is friendly, efficient and ice cream is reasonably priced. They have vanilla and chocolate flavor for soft serve and a weekly rotating flavor that starts on Tuesday which can be found on Facebook. Parking is a bit tight but I don't think the Starbucks or Qdoba next door will notice if you run in for a cone. read more

I have visited this place on numerous occasions and have usually had a great experience. The ice cream is good and it's a great way to top off a day. This last occasion however has left a slightly bitter taste in my mouth. The two staff members inside appeared to be somewhat disgruntled. It was like my family and I were bothering them. To top things off, I ordered two small waffle cones but was charged for two large ones. The cost is really not the point but didn't set well after the less than welcoming reception. Normally I would chalk up the extra to a tip and leave it at that, but the experience has caused me to possibly not return to this establishment. I am truly saddened by this experience as I try to see the best in people. The family being present probably pushed it over the acceptable limit. I've been here twice and the ice cream here is great! Although the staff doesn't seem to be the friendliest, the ice cream really does make up for it. They give you surprisingly huge portions for what you pay for and have a wide variety on their menu. What made this place stand out to me was how they have unique softserve flavors every week (coconut, orange creme, etc)! Amazing that an ice cream place would gouge its prices in a college town. Unbelievable how expensive it is. Take an extra sub 10min drive down some nice country roads to Sweet Sensations in Holt. $4.25 for a medium cone with sprinkles at Tasty Twist, $2.07 in Holt. I unfortunately had a poor experience here tonight. After looking at the menu for a couple minutes, we were approached by a staff member and asked if we are ready to order. We said that we are still deciding what we would like. She proceeded to grimace and roll her eyes at us. I saw her reaction and said to her that we will be out before closing time, and she responded with a snide remark about the time. She continued to give us very obvious dirty looks as we walked out. She had a poor attitude and made what should have been a fun experience into a negative one. Service is just as sweet as their ice cream :) I came in on crutches and they went above and beyond. I'm pretty sure they didn't charge me for the ice cream due to a credit card machine error and I haven't seen a charge from tasty twist on my statement. Accept no imitation! I have been going to Tasty Twist since I was a kid in the 80s, and while I don't live in the area anymore I still wholeheartedly support the business. They were forced to move locations (and they do now take credit cards) but they are still as reasonably priced as I remember them! There is a similarly named ice cream place in their old location but don't be fooled! Tasty TWIST is located just a couple tenths of a mile west. Their soft serve ice cream is nice and creamy and I don't really love ice cream that much - I had cake batter (flavor of the week!) and vanilla twist today. Good stuff! We stopped by after having dinner next door... they have lot of options, so it took be a while to select what I wanted... it wasn't busy, so service was quick... the guy helped me out was friendly. The tables were all full though... I wish they had something like this in Ann Arbor.... Normally I'd give a place like this a good 2+ stars but, judging by the loyal fans below and in-store, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and round up today. The good: convenient location (w/parking!), big portions at reasonable prices, nice variety of scoop/soft-serve and menu items. The average: Ashby's ice cream... it's above average - way better than Hershey's for example - but I honestly have no idea how it won any awards. The flavors tend to be overly sweet and have an artificial aftertaste in my opinion. Others rave about the soft-serve and, despite the interesting flavors featured, also seem just average. The bad: first, there's the service... with no one else to wait on, why can't either of the 2 servers or the owner acknowledge my presence (the 3rd was helping someone)? In case they are confused, "Hi, be right with you" or "Thanks for coming in, someone will help you in a sec" are good starting points. My recent exchange was very different: the server stood in front of me, waiting for my order - absolutely NO verbal communication transpired during my visit except for her giving me my total and counting back the change. No greeting, no thanks, no help. The owner, whom I hear is a nice guy, just stood in the corner talking to his friends, oblivious to (and part of) the snowballing service fiasco at hand. A request for a sample was met with substantial eye-rolling. Too bad I didn't spy a tip jar... 'cuz I sure had a few. Also, I remembered the things I didn't like on my first visit. 1) Styrofoam cups (okay, they're cheap and keep prices down, but I'll gladly pay 10-cents more for a styrene-free diet). 2) Line control: there's no process to handle a rush. A straight line forms out the door, completely disrupting the order, service, pay, and leave flow. 3) And what are their hours... can't they just confirm them on their Facebook page or something? They just never seem sure. In short, a convenient place for a sweet treat; especially nice that it is an independent shop and provides a decent price/quality/size value. Although I have experienced much better, I'm rounding up today because I'm not sure my recent visits reflect their normal operations. If indeed true, however, a subsequent review will likely be one star lower. read more

Any true townie knows that Tasty Twist is the best soft serve in town! I could regale you the famous tale of Tasty Twist vs Tasty Treat, in which the town rises up against hypocrisy, supports small business, and helps Tasty Twist remain the town staple that it is, but I'll let them tell the story later. Aside from its history and iconic status, Tasty Twist is beloved by all for their tasty soft serve twists, different ice cream of the week flavors, and "Twisters" - something which mostly resembles a DQ blizzard or McFlurry but tastes better. I personally recommend the chocolate twister with cookie dough bits, but the best part is that you can personalize to your liking. They have nuts, candies, fruit, you name it - and if you just get a soft serve twist, you can add fudge or hardening chocolate to the top. Oh, and did I mention they have hard ice cream too if you're not a soft serve kind of person? All in all, this is always one of my favorite stops whenever I come home to East Lansing, and it's the best place to chill and grab ice cream on a hot summer night. read more
