I love Taylor Books. It's about 5 blocks from where I work so I sometimes feel like it's my second office. Books, art, coffee, tea, light lunches, art classes, gift shop ... it's pretty much everything I need in one spot. The coffee offerings are similar to Starbucks, but better because you're supporting good a local business. The business is locally-owned and the owners go beyond just owning a business and actually use it to promote local artists instead of selling art from outsiders, or (yuck!!!) "art" made in factories and never touched by the artist. The bookstore is small, but they offer some really good stuff. I enjoy checking out the staff picks. If you need something they don't have, they can order it and get it to you in a couple days. I often email them to see if they have an item I need and order it if they don't. Check them out on ArtWalk -- third Thursday of every month (unless otherwise noted at http://www.charlestonartwalk.com.) Tips: try the homemade scones with your coffee. One of my favorite places in Charleston. I'm relatively new to WV, and - having lived in places like DC and Raleigh, NC, where there are more local independent bookstores, going to Taylor's is great because it transports me to some very positive memories! Taylor Books has great coffee, a pretty good selection of books, wonderful cards and magnets, a small art gallery, a friendly staff and free live music on Fridays and Saturdays. Overall I don't much care for Taylor's. There isn't anything wrong with them, but there isn't anything great either. Their prices are high for the area (cost of buying at the last locally owned bookstore) and the people who patronize the cafe are obnoxious. If I get myself a cup of tea, go into the most remote corner and settle in with a book, I DON'T WANT TO TALK TO YOU! Who would have thought that one of my favorite bookstores/coffee houses would be in West Virginia? This place has it all -- good location in downtown Charleston (albeit lodged between dozens of plaintiff law firms), free wireless, great espresso, cozy seating area, a wide selection of leftist books and magazines, and tons of gifts for your favorite book-reader/lefty politico. While here I eagerly perused the books -- bell hooks, Eduardo Galeano, political anthologies galore -- and the magazines -- Bust, AdBusters, random political zines. I bought a journal, a Kurt Vonnegut book, a small book bag that basically advertises for Taylor Books (yes, I love it), and some cool "this book belongs to..." labels. Great local book store with a cafe. It's the only locally owned book store in town, so you should support this business! If they don't have a book, they will gladly place an order for you. I had to do this numerous times since they didn't carry many well written books on the topics I'm interested in (nutrition & exercise). It's my father's favorite book store and he loves the variety of political books. There is an adjacent art gallery that features art made by West Virginians and other regional artists (including Blenko). They also have live music on the weekends if that's your thing! read more

A little too artsy-fartsy and "progressive" for my tastes. The book selection is alright, albeit small, but not bad but deifinetly catering more to the liberal crowd. On the plus side they have a coffee shop, on the downside they have some boring art and like to play boring soft music, I seriously thought I was going to fall asleep. Still though, if you live in Charleston patronize this local bookstore as its the only one left. It may not be my favorite book store but is definetly better than any of the chain stores. P.S. If you willing to make the journey, Empire Books and News in Huntington has a bigger selection, has the same indie atmosphere and plays good music to boot (Hendrix, Bowie, Stones, etc. etc.) read more

What a bookstore should be. I stopped in while passing by to grab a coffee. The coffee is homemade and delicious. Great little espresso shots to delight the palette. Great selection of books, magazines, and cards. They carry some rare and unique magazines. The card selection was impressive and whimsical. There is also a small art gallery attached to the bookstore full of local art. America could use more stores like Taylor Books. read more

Neat feel to the store, and some good browsable categories - staff picks etc. On the weekday am we stopped by the clientele included all walks of life, from an older gentleman with a wool blazer, boots, and a walking stick who caused another patron to wonder aloud, "does that guy think he's a modern indiana jones or something?," to several somewhat grungy young folks and a couple of businessmen. Hot chocolate was just coffee- shop-standard, but I was glad to give the store some business. A hidden gem in Charleston WV. An old school, community book store, evoking an environment wrapped in exploration of unknown tails, fascinating adventures, and caffeinated dreams and alcohol fueled bravado. Reminds me of small independent bookstores on the west coast, or those you happened to stumble upon which demonstrate that print is not dead and that words still matter. Enjoyed my time looking through the stacks (although not extensive) the wood floors and high bookshelves wrap you with a feeling of warmth and contentment. What they don't have in the store they will order. Granted - they can't compete with Amazon, but continuing to support such a store goes beyond price. Anytime I travel, I seek such locations and patronize them with my hard earned dollars. After spending 3 1/2 years in San Francisco - this bookstore/cafe tops them all. Support local events and community businesses! This place is clean, massive, has everything that Barnes & Noble/Borders doesn't, and is my new fav place in town. I haven't been to Taylor Books for sometime and I was very disappointed today. I'm not sure what changes have taken place over the past year, but definitely not as friendly and not as clean as I remember it always appeared to be in the past. Something is off with the passionate vibrant energy I always enjoyed in this book store/ coffee shop. I will be back and hope to see some positive changes. This is a great independent book shop. The store contains a smallish but well-curated selection of literature and non-fiction, and has an art gallery and coffee shop as part of its repertoire. The shop had fresh muffins and scones in addition to espresso options and while I stopped by to look for first edition and used books, I definitely found many great titles for reading in the little monument park that is found just North of the cafe itself. If I need a coffee or a book next time I'm in Charleston, I'll definitely be stopping back at Taylor Books. Hopefully the clerk will be a tad nicer, but it was also early on a Saturday so I understand a bit of grumpiness... read more

I used to shop at Taylors all the time I used to love the Magazine selection and they had enough selection of Underground type authors that it kept me really happy. As years have passed the magazine selection has started to Dwindle and with so many Discount booksellers and cheap online book locations i Find it very hard to pay full price for books and Everything in there is Retail. A great Addition has been the art Gallery I really like looking at the art when i stop by from time to time and they have had some great artists in there. Anytime I am down in that part of town I always stop by and browse and if possible Try to support small local business. read more

It thus became the gathering center of the incredibly small niche of Charleston artists and hipsters. Taylor books is amongst the few businesses that make Capitol street the only redeeming strip of stores in Charleston, West Virginia. The cafe has a full selection of espresso drinks, tea, and smoothies and also local beers. Great place to hang out and to meet cool people. Selection is really well rounded for the size of the shop. Across three, long rooms, you'll find fine art (including a large gallery of it), gifts, food, coffee, and, of course, books. It's a very personal-feeling place and that's why you'll find regulars settled in with laptops, coffee, and friends every day. The front windows are spacious and overlook beautiful Capitol Street (and three PokéStops!!) and many evenings those windows are the stage for an acoustic musician, a duo, etc. All I can say is...if you're in Charleston, even for one day, stop by Taylor Books.
