I stopped at The Barlow today while shopping and decided to grab a coffee and a croissant sandwich. Unfortunately, the experience left a pretty bad taste in my mouth. The woman helping me had dark hair, glasses, and beautiful tattoos down her arm. I ordered the sandwich and was asked whether I wanted a bagel or sliced bread. I asked about the croissant, and she told me they were out. I said that sliced bread would be fine. When I noticed I was being charged an additional $1.50 for the bread, I politely asked why there was an upcharge. Her response was, "Because we're out of croissants." I asked what the substitute was, and she looked at me and said, "Nothing." At that point, I simply said okay and accepted the bread. She then asked a young man behind her to take over, and he was very polite and finished ringing me up. A few minutes later, I could hear the woman in the back ranting to the staff, and she eventually disappeared into the back. I understand that everyone can have a bad day, and I certainly don't expect perfection. However, as a longtime business owner myself, I know how important it is to treat customers with courtesy and professionalism--even when you're having a difficult day. This interaction was completely unnecessary. I wasn't rude or demanding; I simply asked a reasonable question about a charge. I hope management takes this as an opportunity to remind staff that how you treat customers matters just as much as the product you're selling. read more

Grabbed a honey matcha latte from Taylor Lane while spending the morning around Sebastopol and The Barlow. I appreciated that the matcha was hand whisked instead of just quickly mixed together, which made it feel much more intentional and thoughtfully prepared. The latte itself was not overly sweet, although I personally would have liked a slightly stronger matcha flavor. Still, it was a great drink to walk around with while exploring the local shops and community around The Barlow. Between the atmosphere, the people, and the location, it's an easy place to keep coming back to whenever I'm in Sebastopol. read more

Space is super cute, lots of cozy seating and even a loft upstairs with a window to look down at the coffee production in the back. $8.5 for a 12oz pistachio latte (even w/o an alt milk!) was a bit steep and it was okay. First whiff of the drink was a bit sour so for a second I thought maybe the milk they used was bad but it could be the roast or the pistachio syrup. I recently visited Taylor Lane Coffee and left feeling a bit disappointed. I ordered a hot chai, which ended up being just okay. Definitely on the sweeter side and not enough spiced chai. It was also extremely foamy with so much foam that it felt more like a cappuccino than a chai. I ordered a 12oz but after scooping out the foam probably ended up with less than 8oz. When a barista called out a "hot chocolate," they looked directly at me and asked, "Didn't you order this?" I let them know I had ordered a hot chai, not a hot chocolate. Instead of clarifying or letting me know what would happen next, the barista walked away and spoke to the other staff member without saying anything to me about fixing the order or remaking the drink. They did end up offering us the hot chocolate, which was nice of them, but the lack of communication left the interaction feeling awkward and a bit frustrating. Overall, the drink was fine but not great, and the service could definitely use more clarity and attentiveness. read more

Averages to 3 stars. The drip coffee is good compared to most places. Their matcha iced latte is weak and uninspired. $7.75 for large with non-dairy milk. Tasted like soy milk from my fridge, with only difference being a ghost caffeine boost. Matcha was not prominently flavored. Not even sweetened- they leave it to customer to easily mess up an expensive boutique drink by self-sweetening it. Maybe take it off the menu if it's worse than 9/10 other places offering it. Perhaps different milks require making it differently to let matcha shine in whatever milk is used. That's what I mean by uninspired. It tastes slapped together and I don't feel good paying that much for such a feeling. read more

Sebastopol has several really good coffee spots. I have been going to Taylor Lane Coffee since they were in a small shack off Main Street and the name was Taylor Maid Coffee. I can see why they changed that. The Barlow location is great. They have a nice outdoor patio.the inside has a beautiful, dark wood interior. There is a second level with more seating and it's really nice and quiet. Their selection of coffee drinks and pastries is pretty good, and I appreciate they have a few gluten free pastries to choose from. Their coffee roasts are good here and I like their latte's as well! Over the years, the service here has gone up and down. It always just depends on who is working. Comparatively, I like the coffee better at Retrograde, but Taylor Lane has a better gathering space. Plus, you can't beat the location in the Barlow. read more

Review is only for their whole coffee bean, specifically the Goat Rock roast. I've never been to their actual coffee shop. Anyway, I like dark roasts. Took me a while to figure that out. Was getting Peet's Italian Roast for a while, but it just wasn't great, especially at $18/lb. Couldn't figure out why I didn't like it (still have no idea because my palate may be picky but it's not necessarily sophisticated). Often, I'd leave at least 1/3 of the cup un-consumed (undrank?). Work sent a bag of Taylor Lane's Red Rooster French Roast for the holidays once, and I was like whoa. This is what I like. But I had to be very careful about the beans to water ratio or it'd be too bitter. So I decided to try Goat Rock, and that was it. Been drinking it for well over a year now and I won't ever switch as long as they don't change how they roast it. Worth every penny to get that tasty caffeine in my veins. read more

Taylor Lane beckoned us not 1, not 2, but 3 days in a row during our recent Sonoma Coast/Sonoma County road trip. My husband and I loved this awesome cafe for all the things: the coffee, the food, the really cool space, the friendly staff, and the fact that they offered solid vegan and gluten-free options to enjoy! The cafe (or Coffee Bar), located in The Barlow, is super spacious and has this fun, industrial & artsy vibe with no shortage of seating options in their main shop area, 2nd story loft and outdoor patio. There's this great energy to this place, and the crew here surely enhances that, especially Jayden (who took our order on the 3rd day we dropped in). Big thanks to him for the smiles and great interaction! Depending on the time/day, we got plant-based lattes (almond or oat milk), matcha lattes, and Kombucha (which they had on tap). Food-wise, we were so stoked to find they have a great vegan & GF Banana Bread, and two different types of avocado toast. The Tomato Avocado Toast was as fresh & tasty as it was pretty! This was my first time ever at this particular, outdoor eating, shopping district the Barstow! I loved the quaint little story of how it used to be an apple refinery, but shut down and then was reinvented into this cute little outdoor Plaza with a bunch of mom and pop shops! I love the fact they have organic coffee!! I've only had organic coffee from store-bought grocery stores and never an actual coffee shop so I was very impressed! Once I walked in, I was more surprised to see they still had fresh pastries left so late in the afternoon!! They also had gluten-free items and vegan items!! Wow, this is my kind of place!! I ended up buying two of those skinny little shortbread cookies, not pictured, but they were delicious!! Not too sweet but a little chewy so they worked perfectly with my iced almond milk latte! The espresso was there medium roast style, I really wanted to try their medium/mild Over cup of coffee, but it was a little late in the day for that. The gentleman told me that mild goat roast sold the most. So I will definitely go back and try that as a pour over coffee. Love the convenient location in The Barlow (across from Fern Bar), the open-air two-story setting, and the industrial-chic quiet upstairs seating area. There's also some seating on their front patio. What I ordered: -Latte - it felt like a warm hug after the run in cool temps -Croissant Sandwich with egg, cheese, and pesto - this was also warm and satisfying. The egg was hard boiled (I expected scrambled but didn't ask, and hard boiled makes more sense for quick prep). I'd eat it again but I'd explore some of the other menu items first.
