They charge way too much for a propane refill and totally ripped me off! My tank wasn't even refilled on a scale at all, the meter read 4.50 and I was charged almost $25. What kind of place has you pay for the propane BEFORE it gets refilled? Trust and believe I won't be spending another dime, the first and last time I will step foot inside that establishment! read more

I purchased a house nearby, almost a year ago now. I have been very impressed with not only the service of the personnel here, but also with the convenience of having a hardware store so close to home. cashier service today was crappy! this cashier informed me my bill was Fake! however she had no pen but said the machine failed said bill! I left store went to the bank and they verified bill and suggested the store invest in the ' Pen 'to certify a bill. Another time this same cashier questioned the use of a gift card issued by the store and the manager kindly allowed usage! i feel she could use more customer service training as I felt Undervalued today as a customer! read more

Purchased gas logs vented, had installed by Norfolk plumbing!!! They are great!!!! Logs would not light with remote control! Called maker of the logs direct. They said in shipping sometimes there is damage! Went back to Taylor's and reselected new logs, because of the defect it gave me the opportunity to reselect logs, spent 600.00 more to go with vent free. Although the first set had a defect, the were able to light manually. I felt there was less heat then I wanted. With all that said Norfolk Plumbing had to remove first set and replace second set! I understood there would be additional charge for this! I took receipt to Taylor's to ask to help with the 300.00 charge. Taylor's informs me they can give me 80.00, have not received! I called Taylor? Manager? Have not heard back! I want to support local businesses as I own Ghent Antiques. I am disappointed in this purchase of 1500,00 plus and the way it has been handled! The days of hometown customer service are gone! UPDATE, Taylor called today! That I do appreciate! He is looking into this and promises a larger refund. I will report back soon!!! He also said " I hope we have not loss you as a customer " I feel this issue has now been resolved! Taylor's continues to be my go to for all my local purchases. Fast and convenient. read more

We stop here hoping to save a drive to Home Depot/Lowe's. Unfortunately, my kids call this the "we don't have that" store, warranted from hearing that response every time we ask employees about needed items. On the occasion they do have what we're looking for, it's likely 30%+ more than big box stores. The service is hit and miss, ranging from helpful to persnickety. I once returned an unopened door knob and mentioned paying with my credit card; they said they'd look it up and contact me when they found the transaction to process the return. That was 2006!!! My husband and I needed a nice lightweight leaf blower. We did the price comparisons and Taylor's had what we wanted for a good price. We called ahead and confirmed the product was in stock and headed over. All the staff was very helpful and explained all we would need to fuel and maintain the blower. They took my husband out back and showed him how to start and operate the blower and filled the tank with fuel so he could go home and start using it! We were very impressed with the service we received and will absolutely go back! We could have saved a few bucks and bought from Lowe's but would have gotten what we paid for in terrible service. Taylor's Hardware on Little Creek Road is my "go to" store for small projects around my house and yard. I like that they're close by, they have convenient parking, and they normally have what I need. I especially like that I can buy half-a-dozen of something instead of hundreds more than I want or need like in a big box store. For the small project do-it-yourselfer, they offer guidance, instruction, and even rent tools! The staff is always friendly and helpful. Their prices on Weber Grills and Parts & Accessories is pretty much the same as HD or Lowe's. They fill my propane tanks quickly and efficiently. They have great selections in their garden department. Taylor's is always my first choice instead of making the trek to the big box and fighting the traffic and crowds and the lackluster service of HD. read more

Slow service, nonchalant verging on rude employees, absolutely no selection, astronomical prices...need I go on? Don't unless you live nearby absolutely need something in an emergency. Even then, be prepared to wait in line--the cashiers are slower than Christmas. read more

I cannot tell you how thankful I am for this place! I am a 24 year old girl trying to fix up her home on her own, and let me tell you, i know absolutely n o t h i n g about home improvement. The manager, Michelle, is always so helpful and kind whenever I visit! I am always showing her my little ideas on Pinterest and she always steers me in the right direction. We bought a Stihl chainsaw for about $450 to help in the Hurricane Florence cleanup. We haven't been able to get it started. Not even once, and the store will NOT ISSUE A REFUND. They want us to bring back the new, unused saw so it can be sent away for examination and for the express approval of "Mr. Taylor." Which means the saw is useless for the purpose it was purchased for. We've bought stuff over the years from this store, but nothing this big and nothing that didn't work. From now on it's Lowe's or Home Depot for us. We'll never be so foolish as to make big purchase from this store ever again. read more

The employees here are friendly enough, but don't waste your time if you're looking for knowledge / support for your Stihl equipment. Stihl's website says this place is "Full Line Sales and Service". No one I have dealt with there knows anything about their line, and when I inquired about getting my chainsaw chain sharpened, I got a lame answer. I'm not OK with leaving my stuff with a business that "maybe could try to send it out and see what happens." Oh, and equally if not more important, I paid over 18% MORE for a new chain there than what I could have gotten online from Stihl. I caved because I needed it that day, but now that I've done the math, I realize I should have waited to make the purchase just on principle. Understand they're a local business and it's reasonable to expect slightly higher prices. But with that should come the personal service and knowledge you'd expect from a smaller local company, and this is demonstrably not the case here, at least WRT Stihl products. read more

I was instructed to go to Taylor's Do It Center to get a license for my dog. I was so glad to have a close establishment instead of having to go downtown or mail in my application. I got to the store around 11:30 am today and was never greeted upon entry (which is strange for a local small business). I asked the cashier where I could purchase the needed license and she told me to step to an adjacent counter while she called out for assistance of 3 employees that were nearby assembling a shelving display. A young man, Bo Thomas or Bo Thompkins (reading from name tag), who is the assistant manager, came over. NO GREETING, he only said do you have your rabies certificate. I asked "how's it going?" and got an "ok'. Never did he ask me, the customer, about my day - so I volunteered "I'm doing well too". He went straight to write up the license receipt. Through a series of "Do you have . . .' we completed the information needed for the license. When I looked at the receipt he was preparing, I noticed that I didn't receive a senior discount and I questioned him. He curtly asked my age and I told him I'm 56. He then said the senior discount begins at 60 and didn't waiver. Thank goodness the other store associates were around. They quickly corrected him in that the age of 55 is the recognition of a senior. I like the idea of supporting local businesses but this is one business maybe not. I've gone to this store at least 6 times now and I find the customer service very unfriendly. Only when I had a series of house keys made in the rear of the store did I find an associate who made me feel like my trade was welcome. When I go to Lowes or Home Depot, at least I know what to expect. read more

I want to support a local business, and it's the closest hardware store to me, so I've been in this store a lot. I generally found things that work for now, even if it's never exactly what I'm looking for and they're always marked up quite a bit, but I went in today for help with a simple broken pipe and they just wanted to make fun of me for having a broken pipe instead of suggesting how I could fix it, with a bunch of raised eyebrows and "Oh Lordy!" at the idea that I would be the one fixing it. That's a way to turn people off of home improvement, by making it seem all insider-y and cryptic and that noobs are dumb for trying. The name implies they'll help you do it. Contractors aren't going to shop there with the markups, so who are they trying to appeal to anyway? Also, it's a touchy thing to address, but a mentally ill man stands outside sometimes and he followed me into and around the store muttering "Where's Jesus at?" and that's a bit unnerving and the store should do more to make it feel more secure. By the way, the pipe is now fixed even though I was terrified that I was going to screw something up because of the way they acted. read more
