Angela is an extremely creative dancer, very strong in technique and skill, but so passionate within every movement. Watching her dance really captivate you and motivates you. Their lead drummer, Kalisi, is sooooooo freakin dope. I couldn't begin to fathom how crazy genius this guy is when it comes down to creating beats per Angela's movements. Everyone is so friendly, but has a good sense to strive to be the best. I also have to say this is the best looking group I've ever been with. Everyone is beautiful both inside and out! But what really is unique is how all of the other dancers and drummers have this natural vibe; like everyone feeds off of each other's energy. The adage "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" has never sat well with me. As an educator, I believe that one should never stop learning. So, I decided -- past the age of 40 -- that I will learn something new. My daughters started dancing with Te Varua Ori (TVO) in August 2016. They loved it (they still do!). At my girls' first performance and the rehearsals that led up to it, I saw dancers of different backgrounds, shapes, sizes, and personalities, come together and give their all for the show. By January 2017, I joined the beginner class myself. I figured I can get some exercise in right after my girls finish with their class. I am a person whose experience is limited to a couple of folk dances performed in elementary school. I'm not musical at all. However, TVO makes dancing fun. Angela (dance director) and all the instructors push us to do our best. I am convinced that learning choreography keeps my brain sharp. My endurance level today is totally better than when I was in my 20s. My two hours at TVO per week allow me to release stress from work and life. I was looking to get into Tahitian dance and did a ton of research online about the best dance group in OC to sign up with. I emailed a few dance schools to inquire about beginner classes. Angela emailed me back immediately with a detailed explanation about what to expect and I decided to give Te Varua Ori a try as the first class is FREE! I really appreciated the promptness of her reply as some places never even responded. Te Varua Ori also has one of the best social media and online presences which makes it easy to look them up and see what they offer. I came to class with very little experience and one of the aides, a super experienced girl on the advanced team, pulled me aside and refreshed me on the basic steps one-on-one while the rest of the class did the warm up. That personalized attention really made me feel welcome. The beginner class is full of people just starting out and a few more intermediate and advanced people that come for practice. This is SUPER beneficial because when we do drills I can usually follow someone more advanced instead of just trying to figure it out on my own at the expense of my form. Angela is a patient, kind leader and never gets frustrated with me even when my circles are wobbly or when I make ugly facial expressions because I'm tired, she just reminds me gently and corrects my form. She is a beautiful and amazing dancer and hosts multiple workshops all around the world, I am incredibly lucky to see her twice a week when someone people save up for the ability to see and train with her just once a year! If you've ever danced with a school or show group you understand the dynamics of the team are very important. Girls can sometimes be snobby or cliquish and look down on you if you're not "at their level" which makes it very difficult for beginners to join a group that is well established and has been dancing together for years. I am here to tell you this is NOT the case with Te Varua Ori. They break the classes down by level so you wont feel uncomfortable dancing with the advanced show team if you're a beginner. But when the more advanced girls do come to practice with you they are KIND and so HELPFUL. I have had multiple expert dancers help me on basic beginner moves because they remember what its like to just start out and they are so supportive of everyone's journey. I cant really speak for the male classes but I did see some advanced guys practice with us this week and they were freakin killing it! It's been a dream of mine to learn Tahitian dance since I was a wee girl. Now that I'm grown with some extra funds and time to spend, i decided to check a studio out. I actually tried to contact one other studio before Te Varua Ori (TVO), but they never picked up the phone. So I found TVO, and their awesome website. I sent an email to the director, and got a response that same day! I'm not experienced in any form of dance (except for shaking my butt to power106 or kday in the privacy of my own room), but Angela, the director never makes me feel like I don't belong. I went to Hawaii about 10 years ago with my family and saw a show where the girls danced and shook their hips ALOT. It was so exotic, beautiful, and enchanting. I was so fascinated and fell in love with the dance. I told myself I wanted to learn this. 10 years go by and I never did it, until one day I just said it's time to get out there and learn. So I looked on Yelp and found Te Varua Ori. I called to ask a few questions and Angela, TVO's dance director, answered all my questions so I can feel comfortable with coming in. She said my first time will be free just so I can get a feel of it. I fell in love when I came my first day. All the girls were so friendly and sweet. Very encouraging and making sure you do your best. It was and intense work out; I was sweating a lot!!! But wow I felt amazing. I remembered telling myself I am definitely enrolling in this permanently! I signed up and told Angela that I won't be able to come a lot in March due to work and vacation trips, and she was very understanding and told me to just pay the $10 drop-in fee for March. I've probably been to my 6th class now and still going. I'm always excited to come to each session because its never a boring time. You're always learning something new and the teachers are always still trying to help you be better with each movement. I'm still learning but I feel like I'm a lot better compared to my first day (o man.. i was horrible lol)! The environment is just super friendly and a great place to learn Tahitian dance. I was very intimidated to take a Tahitian dance class with my friend at first because I had no clue what I was getting myself into. She somehow convinced me to come, and I am thankful for it. As soon as I walked in for my first free trial class, I was warmly welcomed and I quickly grew to love the group because everyone treats each other like family. Summer of 2014, I was going through physical therapy for my knee. I tore my medial patellar ligament and I could barely do squats or run! I was looking for something fun to try for the summer and I stumbled upon Te Varua Ori's page on yelp. They had amazing reviews. I tried calling another studio and that studio did not pick up. Angela answered when I called and she was so welcoming and encouraging. She always voiced not to push myself too far with my knee and to know my limits. I am now stronger, my knee is able to do duck squats and to do regular squats. For the past two years, I have learned the style of Tahitian dance and I fell in love with it. Angela is very understanding and pushes her dancers to be their very best. She teaches you the basics and has amazing dancers teach classes as well. She trains you so well and encourages you very much. I made many friends here and it really does feel like a family. I felt intimidated my first day because I did not know anyone, but over time, you really build connections and friendships. Dance shows, competitions, support, you get it all! I have been an active dancer for Te Varua Ori since my freshman year of college (about five years ago) and it has been an amazing experience from the beginning to the present. This is one awesome and beautiful group! You can really feel the love and aloha within and from everyone in the group! You can see the passion in their eyes and Angel (the leader of the group) is a beautiful soul! Her Mom as well! You can tell where the humbleness and appreciation for life and dance comes from! Tonight (Thursday) was mine and my wife's first exposure and even introduction to Te Varua Ori and upon arrival we were already greeted by Angel herself! Even her Mom was so loving and took quickly to my 10 month Baby Boy and he absolutely loved her! When we moved down from the San Francisco Bay Area we were saddened by the thought of leaving the group we had belonged to because they had extended the same kind of Love and Aloha and we had all became a family and we thought we'd never find another group like that again. Then came Angel and Te Varua Ori and our hearts dropped and melted away with warmth and their smiles and hugs. The Tahitian culture was all new to me. When I signed my daughter up to joined, she had just turned 5 years old. She have now been dancing with TVO for about a year and a half. After her first show, I was drawn even more to the Tahitian culture that I too had decided to join, Te Varua Ori's beginners one class. Overall, I really enjoy it a lot! Not only it's fun, but it is also a great work out and a great stress reliver. The classes has also helped me in many ways. I have a slightly herniated disc in my lower back, and I found that some of the drills that we do in class have helped alot with muscles strengthening, flexibility, and weight loss. In high school, I always wanted to try out Tahitian dance, but I thought I was too old to start, since most people I knew started when they were kids. I let it go until my sophomore year of college, when my coworkers encouraged me to start, and assured me I wasn't too old. It's been a little over three years that I have been dancing with Te Varua Ori and from the start it has been everything that I have wanted in a group. I started as a beginner and I feel so proud to have grown so much and I thank the amazing director Angela Crisan Liava'a for helping me become the dancer I am today. It is also the other dancers who have pushed me to be my best. I am now a more confident person because of this group. Some of my best friends are those I have made within this group and I have made so many more friends through TVO. Everyone is so welcoming and warm hearted.
