Nice destination lunch spot. Food is great and nicely presented. Good selection too. You don't leave hungry. The only drawback is the limited size of the dining area but everyone is usually happy and not worried about squishing in. The depot provides a unique look and ambiance. Food is overpriced and the sandwich I ordered did not come as described. Service was very good, considering how crowded the space is. I don't see how the servers can maneuver around the tables placed so close together. I went with a group of family and four of us were seated at a separate table pretty far from the rest of our group, which was 7 others. We did have a reservation. The four of us couldn't really interact with them. So if your group is more than 7 people, be aware that you won't be seated together. The total for 3 of us, one being a child, for the tier of sandwich, salad or cup of soup, and dessert was around $100, including tip. The only "extra" we ordered were our drinks, which were also overpriced. The atmosphere is really nice, being in an old train depot, but $100 for a sandwich unch for 2 adults and one child is pricey in my opinion. read more

We had a fun visit on the Saturday before Mother's Day, which I imagine is one of their busier days. The cafe portion can get VERY loud when it is as full as it was that day, plus it was stuffed to the brim with tables which made maneuvering difficult for the patrons in wheelchairs and with walkers. Plus the chairs at different tables overlapped a bit so you were bumping into other patrons while getting up and down from your chair. Our food arrived super quickly and was overall very good. The desserts were definitely the shining stars of the food tower, then the broccoli soup was perfectly seasoned and had a lot of good sized broccoli chunks in it. We tried the chicken salad on a salad and that was a bit of a let down, the chicken salad tasted out of a tub. You pay at the same counter you check in at so that was a bit hairy too when it came time to pay the bill. Again, probably not this bad on the average Saturday. The gift shop was fun to browse through on the way out, bit high priced but saw plenty of people in line. read more

I love the Mackinaw Tearoom! The food is delicious, the employees are very kind and helpful, and the store and restaurant looks very pretty. Everything is well kept. Six of us met for lunch at the Tea Room At The Depot in Mackinaw, IL. Throughout the building, the decor is somewhat reminiscent of a Cracker Barrel. Knickknack sales at the entrance and visually interesting things in the dining area. The waitstaff was wonderfully attentive throughout our visit. We were seated quickly and table service was fast and efficient without being obtrusive. Like many of these eateries they stress lighter fare with a pared down menu. They have croissants, panini sandwiches, lots of salad choices, and,oh my, lots and lots of great deserts! Of special note were the combo meals. The combos consist of a soup / salad, a sandwich, and a desert. They serve each meal in a three tiered carrier that makes for a visually pleasing display. The combo meal was about $17 (depending on the sandwich). My wife and I (not being overly hungry) chose just a sandwich. I had the ruben and she had the smoked ham and cheese. Both sandwiches came panini style mine on swirled rye bread and hers on wheat bread. None of the sandwiches came with chips nor did I see the option of adding them. Opting for water with a lemon twist and passing on desert got us out the door for $17 and change. The sandwiches, while not "piled sky high", were by no means skimpy. They represented a good value for the money. The Tea Room At The Depot is definitely geared towards the ladies, or couples out for a quiet meal. I would love to return and try one of the themed evening meals. read more

We love visiting tearooms and this was a great one! The food not only tasted great but also was visibly pleasing. I had the chicken salad which had apples and nuts in it and the Asian salad and ended with a delicious chocolate cake. It was served on a three-tiered tray. Good food - terrible service. We went with a group of 8 women. We all ordered separate items. One ordered a Trio, but without dessert; she was charged for the dessert anyways. Others ordered entrees/salads without certain toppings - got those toppings anyways. The server came with our handwritten tickets explaining that parties over 8 are charged gratuity. (Not posted anywhere or stated in the menu - but a common practice and not too surprising.) We each paid our bill and mine was with a credit card. The manager came chasing after me saying that his staff person forgot to add on her own gratuity, but he would just go ahead and add it onto the already SIGNED credit card receipt. Really? You're going to chase after me for $6 when you just had a $160 table, because your staff can't do math? And commit a federal theft charge, because he TOLD me (didn't ASK me) that he was going to do this. The food is good, but not worth the hassle. read more
