The volunteers are kind and full of good cheer. ECHO will also advertise the specific items on their billboard so you can see what items are most in need. ECHO can't accept everything but they can recommend other organizations that accept furniture, perishable food or other items for donations. I think it's pretty safe to say it's a one of a kind (if not the only) non-profit organization / facility that allows you to drop off your child(ren) with special needs, for a day or two on the weekend to allow the parents some time of respite. Absolutely love their mission and the fact that they care specifically for an otherwise marginalized population. They have three "lodges" each with 10 rooms (half singles, half doubles), outdoor playground, pool, indoor gymnasium, chapel, a variety of rooms for computers, music, arts & crafts, sensory stimulation and quite rooms. And practically everything has a theme. It really does look like a kids' paradise...and hopefully it will be. You'll need to register on their website to utilize their services.

Unconditional love…read more As cheesy as it may sound, this place oozes unconditional love for children with special needs. From the carefully thought-out interior decor to the doting, compassionate staff, Jill's House is one of the most tangible manifestations of love for a group of children often overlooked by the general public. Jill's House is an overnight respite home for special-needs children. For the kids, it's like a fun sleepover - there's a music room with musical instruments, sing-a-long DVDs, and space to dance, a technology room with touch-screen computers, an art room, a gym, an indoor pool, a playground, and nature-themed "pods" with more games, puzzles, toys, video games, and even a movie screen (tell me you didn't have to take a breath in between reading that list). For the hard-working parents (for whom I have such great respect and admiration), it's a chance for them to have a night to themselves. Furthermore, Jill's House is an incredibly safe place for these children. The intake coordinators are very detailed in recording each individual child's diet restrictions, medical concerns, and methods of communication. They also make sure to give the parents (and the child) a tour of the facility beforehand. The intake coordinators, then, propagate all of this information to the staff who work directly with the children. Now, the staff are a group of people who are not only efficient caretakers, but are also genuinely loving people. It's apparent that the children quickly form bonds with the staff and recognize them when they return. It's heartwarming to witness. I could go on and on, but (as another review has pointed out) it might be easier to just visit the website or call. Ultimately, this facility houses an amazing group of workers and a precious group of kids.

Marion Brunken at Volunteer Alexandria was instrumental in helping me find what I wanted. Her experience in the field is extensive and expertise spot on. I swear she knows everyone in Alexandria! She took time to sit down with me to visit, understand my interests and goals and make recommendations on several different opportunities as well as what I needed to do to move forward. Within no time I was meeting with potential non-profits and am now a board member with Space Of Her Own. I highly recommend Marion and her team when looking for volunteer opportunities in Alexandria.

Lending a helping hand…read more.. I had the pleasure of doing some charity work while I was in Washington, DC. The Capital Area food bank offers an invaluable service to the area providing food for families in need. With the tough economics times the country finds itself in, it was encouraging to be part of good works. It also brought an awareness of the circumstances that people end up in a blink of an eye. It's a cooperative effort of the Town of Haymarket, St. Katherine Drexel Catholic Mission, and St. Paul's Anglican Church. Volunteers staff and run the program. Their mission and vision statements are below: Mission statement: The Mission of the Haymarket Regional Food Pantry is to eliminate hunger in our community and surrounding areas by acquiring and distributing food to those who seek aid. We will accomplish this mission by educating, empowering and enlightening the community about the issues of hunger and nutrition Vision: We envision a community in which everyone has access to sufficient, nutritious food. I became aware of this organization recently. So when I am out grocery shopping at Giant Food, I watch for good deals on things like canned goods - where I can buy a couple of cases of canned non-perishable items - such as vegetables, soups, fruits, pasta dishes, etc., to take over and donate to the Haymarket Regional Food Pantry. I think it's important as a community to help out those in our community that are struggling and less fortunate. This is one small way I can help out. I encourage anyone in the area to get into the habit of making a regular donation to the Haymarket Regional Food Pantry. The Haymarket Regional Food Pantry is located in a small house right next to the Town of Haymarket Police Department, right off of Route 55 (Washington Street).
