I framed three things with Ted Gibson Picture Frames recently: a cool cardboard and paper artwork by Ana Serrano, and two watercolor portraits of my basset hounds, which I received for Christmas from my brother and his girlfriend. All three pieces were quite precious to me, enough so that I thought it'd be worthwhile to splurge on some custom framing. I'd never gotten anything framed before--I knew it was expensive, and kind of thought buying matting at Aaron Brothers was fancy enough. I'm sorry to report that custom framing does make an enormous difference. The cost was about as high as I thought it would be, though it does seem like Ted Gibson's prices are competitive. In any case, I thought the work was beautiful, and I have no regrets. The shop is on 3rd near the YMCA (conveniently within walking distance of my house). There's a sign out front, but it's still kind of easy to miss. The storefront is pretty obscured and looks closed at all times. I think you have to ring the bell to get let in. The interior is cluttered in an appealing way, set up more for the work being done than for entertaining clients. There are frames and moldings and artwork everywhere. The shop has been around for decades, though this location is relatively new. Ted Gibson worked in custom framing for 65 years before he died in 2000 at the age of 92 (here's his obit in the L.A. Times: https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2000-mar-24-mn-12293-story.html). His son Richard runs the shop now, along with his employees Griselda and Antonio, who are themselves children of Ted Gibson's employees. Griselda and Richard were both there when I went in with my pieces, and they took me through the entire custom order process with patience and care, measuring things out, showing me different mounting options, and helping me pick out moldings and glass. (Antonio, who wasn't there, cuts the frames.) I couldn't visualize how it would all turn out, but I figured they were professionals and let them take the lead. It took a few weeks for the job to be done, and when I went to pick them up, I was actually stunned by the beauty of the work. All three pieces were perfectly framed, and the framing enhanced the art in a way I wasn't expecting. I have at least a few more pieces I'd like to get custom framed at some point, and I will definitely bring them back to the folks at Ted Gibson. They were so nice and helpful, and I couldn't be more pleased with their work. read more

I knew Ted Gibson. My mother regularly had art pieces, even souvenirs we'd collect on vacations framed by him. She had him frame these oil paintings she had done of my brothers and sisters. We each still have those oils. I have to go to LA today and I waa just double checking the address. I guess the store moved from its original 7th St address that waa behind Bullocks Wilshire. There is no other place to go for picture framing other than to Ted's. About 20 years ago I broke a picture frame with a monet poster in it. Ted who I thought would just reframe it, took my poster and turned into an amazing canvassed painting. Ted himself did something I did not know was possible. Now I think his son and his art store family continued his legacy. I know from the reviews Ive read, nothing has changed other than the address. For years, Ted has made my home look beautiful. A dying breed, this is a PROFESSIONAL framer. Bring your prized artwork here, and Richard (Ted's son, who now runs the business) will choose the perfect matte and frame for it (you can choose yourself, but I never bother, Richard is an artist and knows what will look great). The building is insanely packed with literally thousands of pieces of framing wood, and apparently there's even more in storage. Somehow, Richard knows about it all. Richard has built shadowbox frames for me, basic solid color frames, beautiful wood frames to complement striking art... he's got the material to frame any piece for you, to make it look its best. A number of years ago I purchased a couple of original wood block prints in Japan. They sat in my closet for about a year, waiting to be framed. I dared not go to Aaron Brothers and every other frame shop I ventured into left me uninspired. I wish I remember how I heard of Ted Gibson's. It's in the middle of MacArthur Park, housed in a building a block long, and stuffed floor to ceiling with artwork and framing materials. When I walked in Richard, who now carries his father Ted's torch, greeted me. I showed him the two pieces and he treated them with the same reverence I felt for them. We spent the better part of an hour choosing precisely how the piece would be framed. His eye for detail and framing to accentuate the artwork was truly an education for me. Not only did I get the two peices framed, I actually purchased a piece of art. I have since been there three times. have three more pieces waiting to be framed, have recommended him to a friend, and have sent my parents there to buy artwork. I WILL ONLY GO TO TED GIBSON'S TO GET ARTWORK FRAMED! One time he invited me to go in the back and we went digging together to find the exact frame I wanted. They had it. They have everything. After some carelessness on behalf of the USPS (Insert Dramatic Eye Roll) I had a very important plaque that needed to be re framed. It was right after the holidays and right before NYE so my options were limited. I got lucky and found this shop and after a phone call, it was open!! I took in my broken frame just to find out the guy who does his custom frame work was on vacation. I tell you this guy went above and beyond to try and find me a frame because I needed one ASAP. He literally went around his entire shop and measured numerous frames just to try and find one to fit. We struck a lucky and he actually did find one. I have to say he is a super sweet guy & willingness to help me as best he could was THE BEST. He even offered to be a witness in my dispute against USPS since he had viewed the damage of the frame and I purchased a replacement from him which proved it was to damaged to be fixed. I've had a few pieces framed here. About 5 years ago I took an important family piece to Richard and his team and they did a great job, truly, and the price was fair. I was happy with the final outcome and it was a good first time experience. Sadly, my recent experience wasn't so great. I took three photographs in and asked to have them framed in a natural wood look with a slightly tall thickness/depth of frame, as this was, I think, a better look for the pieces. I went over it several times with the owner and he was on board with it and yet when I picked up all three pieces, they had used a much shorter depth, which just made the pictures look like cheap stock frames. I didn't have the heart to tell them I was not happy with it so I simply smiled, took the final work and went on my way. Also, I paid the entire cost up front to be nice, after the owner had hinted that he would appreciate that and instead of them finishing the project in a timely manner out of respect for my kindness, they dragged their feet because they already had my money. If you go here, don't give them the entire fee up front, only give a small deposit. Especially if you want the work done without too much delay. They have wonderful vision, for the most part, but make sure you insist on what you want in the end. I feel like they will do what they want if it is easier for them and saves them money but keep in mind their shortcuts won't save you money, they still charge you full boat. I'm a big fan of supporting small business owners but I'm also not a chump. read more

Richard Gibson's Dad, Ted, was renowned as "Framer to the Stars". It's all true, many movie stars, artists and celebrities were his personal friends. Zero Mostel used to come into the shop and help Ted wait on customers when Ted was busy! And like Winston Churchill, some of the famous screen actors were also artists in their own right, such as Anthony Quinn. I recently brought a fine English portrait to Richard which was damaged by movers, for repair. I purchased it in Olde Towne Alexandria 30 years ago, and always knew it was a very fine work, probably "school of" John Singleton Copely, Joshua Reynolds, or John Singer Sargent. The subject is a beautiful young English maiden seated side-saddle on a horse with a wide brimmed bonnet. Richard remarked what a fine work it was. When he removed the brown framing paper from the rear to inspect the tear, he said what's this? It was signed by the artist "Curtis Spencer" Circa 1835 to 1850. Well, that sure made my day! There is so much history here. Just stop by for a walk into Hollywood History. One renowned California artist whom Ted represented and framed for, was Marion Hewlett Pike. Prior to her death in 1998, she was the internationally famous portraitist of Bob Hope, Coco Chanel, plus the Ronald Reagan portrait which appeared on the 1988 cover of Time Magazine. Because Marion lived in Paris 6 months each year, she knew Coco Chanel quite well, and painted many wonderful City scapes of Paris, one of which I own, thanks to Richard. Above all, Richard is the torch bearer of his Dad's rare artistry. Not only do they offer superb framing and matting but also excellent cleaning and restoration. Ted Gibson Inc. is also one of the most reasonably priced purveyors of fine framing but also museum quality restoration and cleaning of oil paintings. They are the official restorer of the Wilshire-Ebell collection among other accomplishments down the years. This shoppe is one of Los Angeles's great treasures. There are about 7,000 paintings in inventory, some very reasonable. If you love Art, and know a little or a lot about Art, Richard will teach you like a Pro. It doesn't get any better than this.
