Let's set the scene: It's Cinco De Mayo. I have a sombrero on my head, frozen margarita in my glass, and a poncho wearing corona in my other hand. The only thing missing from this beautiful and festive fiesta I am at is la eats! Mi amigos decide that Tello's is the food of choice for this afternoon which was a great idea because it was located only about a block away. We called to order. A small menu but lots of variety. Quesadillas, burritos, and chimichangas (which I heard are not that great). Also plenty of vegetarian options which is perfect for me and also a "Bard college special" for the awesome collegiate establishment located a few minutes away. Calling in an order for 5 people to an establishment that lacks English speaking employees is muy dificil to say the least. Lucky for me I was not designated food orderer. Bless my darling's heart. She struggled through that order, having to repeat her self numerous times but after about 5 minutes the order was placed. Just about everything on the menu is $7. Can't beat that. Totally a reasonable price for how full you're going to be after consuming your meal. We sat around for 15 to 20 minutes and then took the short walk over there. A small restaurant with 4 or 5 tables. Not much decoration or anything fancy and a refrigerated area with drinks. We wanted to split the bill. There is a 10$ minimum for credit card purchases and as I said before the employees need a little help with the English language. Took a while, but after slight confusion everything was paid for and we scurried out complete with my "Chipotle or Mole" veggie burrito and a whole lot of green sauce and guac. When I munched into my first bite...Heavenly. I love burritos. Once I found the right hot sauce to dash on there it was nothing short of what I had been longing for all week. I was not at all dissatisfied with that wonderful burrito. It was huge, compactly rolled in foil, and stocked with beans and flavor. Different from Chipotle which happens to be my favoritest BUT for surely chipotle-esque yet tasted a tad fresher and healthier. It probably isn't. But the ingredients definitely tasted like they were plucked right out of a day laborer's basket that A.M.. They also mention on el menu that the ingreds are fresh when the season permits (maybe that fresh image just made it seem fresher.. words can play tricks on my mind.) If it wasn't for the language barrier they definitely would have gotten a fifth Estrella out of me. It's 3 days later and I'm still full from that delightful meal. OMG! I almost forgot to mention. Tello's Green Farm - Chipotle or mole burrito - Latin American Near Me - Red Hook, New York

This place is great! I'm so upset I only discovered it a few months before I graduated. The first time I came here, I ordered the chips and guacamole appetizer and a chicken empanada. I wondered why just chips and guac were a whopping $7 but understood when they brought it out -- they give you a TON of fresh made guacamole and fried chips! Seriously, you could taste in a single bite just how fresh the avocados and tomatos in the guac was -- absolutely amazing. The chicken empanada was equally delicious -- the chicken meat inside was tender and bursting with flavor and the outside dough was crunchy. Best of all, they give you a huge empanada for only $1.50!! Their black beans and rice were also delicious. The only reason I didn't give this place 5 stars is because I went back at least 3 different times after my first visit and each time, they were out of the chips & guac and the chicken empanadas. Authentic Mexican food in an unlikely location in upstate New York. I've been hearing from friends in Hudson of a Mexican Grocery Store that has authentic Mexican food. Well, they meant this restaurant beside the Latin American Grocery store. Nonetheless, it was my friend's bf who is from Mexico City that told me how good the food is here. I drove here with a buddy from the city, who like me, is a big fan of Mexican food. My friend ordered a pork burrito and I had the carne asada burrito. When the food arrived and we started to eat, we just ate in silence, until we requested some salsa verde. Wow, the food is lovely. I drove my RV from San Francisco to Cabo San Lucas. We ate Mexican all the way to fish tacoville-Cabo. This restaurant is tasty, clean, and has wonderful flavors. I was craving for some quesedilla today and this happened to be the spot I was near so I tried it out! The place is small, seems like the place Bard College folks would come in to eat. It is air conditioned but when someone opens the door and doesn't close it well, it stays open. There happened to be lots of flys flying around too. Well, let's talk about the food. I had the cheese quesedilla. I requested chicken with it. MAN WAS THAT GOOD! And it was filling too! I got three in a taco shaped wrap with cheese and chicken in it. Two was enough to fill me up! It came with chopped up lettuce and tomato and that green sauce that I can't remember what it's called...oh well. They told me when it's the season, they used their own grown vegetable. Stopped here again today after a seminar on Saint Seans at Bard Coll. Atmosphere has not improved since last year, but selection has. FABULOUS entrees: the enchiladas: most fresh tasting I've EVER had and I've eaten 'em from here to California. Sure the tortillas were home made. But the empanadas just knocked me out!! Enormous flavor with apparently simple, vegetarain ingredients and well cooked, flavorful, shredded chicken. Now they have fresh horchata at reasonable prices! Nice staff. I eat here every Monday (Mexican Monday!), and always enjoy the food. The service is lousy (except when Nestor or his son are there) but this isn't fine dining at all. I typically order chicken enchiladas with a terrific green sauce, chicken chimichanga, or chorizo tacos. Though I enjoy the food, they lose points for their inconsistency. Sometimes the tacos are big and fat, other times they are on a diet. Whatever, it's inexpensive, tasty food, and it makes Mondays a bit less lousy. This place is authentic cooking meets college budget and presentation. The food is yummy and filling. The chimichanga was really good, but looked different. The vegeterian options are nice and the mom and kid who work there and nice and friendly as well. The place is eerily quiet (no music) except for talking people. Sit by the soda fridge doors and be entertained and amused every time they all open when the the walk in freezer door from within the kitchen is closed. Then you'll have to get up and close all 4 of them if you are the lucky one sitting by them. I is a good laugh. It is a good place and reasonable prices. They should have orchata though..they seem to never have it in stock. Their stock of some things are iffy..i guess the owner has a hard time keeping stuff in stock sometimes. BYOB is allowed so if you need some cold ones with that burrito, I guess your in luck. read more

Tello's was never an exceptional place for Mexican food, but it used to be better -someone else already pointed out that ever since the younger girl started handling the counter, the service has taken a huge turn for the worse, and I have to agree. The last time I went, we ordered tamales and a chicken burrito. We ate the tamales first, and they weren't all that great, but basically what we'd wanted. When we got started on the burrito, though, it turned out they'd filled it with tuna instead of chicken. When we complained to the girl at the counter, she pretended not to understand English. When we told her in Spanish, she started insisting (in English) that the tuna fish was chicken and tried to coerce us into paying for the item we had not ordered. If you really want Mexican food in Red Hook, you can give it a try, but if you get the young girl behind the counter instead of one of the older women, be warned, she has an absolutely terrible attitude and will lie to your face rather than address the problems that always seem to occur when you have to deal with her. We had had multiple prior experiences with this girl messing up our order in ridiculous ways, and we kept trying to get along with her anyway, but now I've come to the conclusion that she does this stuff on purpose just to fuck with people. This place really went down hill. I use to come here all the time and then disaster struck when they started letting that girl formerly with braces, and then formerly pregnant, work there full-time. She barely speaks English and will hang up on you when you try place an order over the phone! When I order in person she not only gets my order wrong (I am a vegetarian and 9/10 times without fail, there is meat in whatever I order!), she doesn't understand it when you complain (again, barely speaks English) and so the last time I was there I could not even correct my order, I ended up having to throw it out and leaving as I could not eat it. In the off chance that she does get my order right, she cannot cook at all except for slathering cheese between two tortillas. I can't believe this place took such a turn for the worse, I'm trying to be reasonable here, but the only way I see this place not going out of business these days is by replacing that younger girl and returning to the older employees (whose food was always delicious and they were courteous to their paying customers). read more
