Perfect neighborhood brewery and beer garden with ample outdoor seating surrounded by street art on the fences. I have so many friends who know the founders from BrewLabs, a Bay Area brewers' collective started by the founders of Temescal Brewing. So between BrewLabs and the Kickstarter that helped to fund the brewery's opening there was a lot of hype in the neighborhood about Temescal Brewing opening. In the past 1.5 years since it opened I've enjoyed meeting there with friends for drinks, bringing my running team for beers, and attending the events that the brewery hosts. I appreciate that they use their space for community events such as makers fairs and phone banking. read more

House DJ on the ones and twos supporting a local non-profit promoting community reading. Every other time after was a positive experience. Ample patio seating makes this a cool spot to call up the local friends and chill on a sunny afternoon. The communal setup adds to the social dynamic. There's definitely a good mix of local characters from all walks of life. I was happy to see the absence of toddlers running around. The new Oakland trend is treating a brewery like a Chuck E Cheese. Outside food is allowed which is a big plus. Church's chicken anyone?! It's located right next door. They usually also have a food truck stationed outside. Overall this place is toward the top of my list. Prices are fair and the beers are rotational. Cash me in the outside patio sippin pilsner and washing it down with some wangs! read more

Was hoping to enjoy some beer with my adult friends but somehow we ended up at this preschool that serves beer. The beer was good but I couldn't enjoy it because I was worried I might trip over one of the toddlers. I will say this place is in a good location. Though the selection of beer is slim and not the best. The low rating comes from the pretentious hipster crowd and the bartenders attitude. Whenever you have the feeling you're inconveniencing the bartenders then there is a problem. It's called customer service please learn a little. On to the beer. I will say that they do have a pretty awesome outdoor space.... Unfortunately the beers are not fantastic (not bad just not fantastic), decently priced though. They are EXTREMELY family friendly here (which can be a pro or a con depending what you are looking for). I was surprised they don't have any kind of an outdoor game area (for kids or adults), due to their reputation for being so family friendly. They do not serve food here, but on the Saturday when I came, they did have a pupusa food truck outside (which was pretty delicious!). The day I came it was uncharacteristically sunny outside, with not enough umbrellas to go around... Which led to some awkward encounters between different parties outside trying to take umbrellas for themselves. Fun place. On a pleasant day, the outside is a wonderful way to enjoy some beer. The staff is quite friendly and talkative. The selection isn't overly complicated, containing some interesting options. There is definitely plenty of room. For the design, it's very creative and there's even a cool little booth area for any small group to enjoy. Though of course, if the weather is nice...get thee outside! For the beers, I only sampled four of them, but they were enjoyable. They were perhaps a tad high on the fruity IPA direction. And that's not bad exactly. And probably a great thing for summer and early fall. For the colder months, a different selection might be good. But perhaps that's already the case. With so many new breweries opening up in the East Bay lately, it's hard to keep up. Temescal Brewing however was the one I was looking forward to the most. I saw it as a potential Cellarmaker East. With the brew master's pedigree, I had and still do have high hopes for this place. The very first thing that stands out about Temescal Brewing is that the location doesn't really stand out at all. If it weren't for the food truck parked next to a newly painted dark blue building I may not have found it at all. It looks more like an art studio from the street. The next thing that becomes obvious once you walk in is that TB is very different. Bright white and pastels dominate the décor. You would be forgiven if you mistook this for an ice cream parlor as my wife had mentioned. Especially when the aroma of the brewing process mixing with the smell of fresh popcorn began overwhelming the senses. This is a very pleasant place to down a few pints to say the least. That's even before taking into account their rather large outdoor beer garden area. They also feature a dedicated opening towards the front of the patio so that food trucks can easily open their door to the beer garden without patrons needing to walk around through the front. Very smart since beer wouldn't be allowed in the parking lot area anyways. They've been open for two months or so, yet they only have 6 or so beers on tap. That didn't really slow down the steady stream of thirsty hipster beer lovers from creating a nearly constant line to the bar. I can certainly see why. With a beautiful location right around the corner from MacArthur BART station, I could see myself becoming a regular too. I was disappointed to see that they wasted so much of their precious tap space dedicated to fad beers such as sours and saisons. The few beers that I did try leave me to believe that if they focus on what they're good at, they will do very well. My favorite was the Pale with the ALS hop. This is probably the best beer I've had that utilizes this unique hop. The Good to Go IPA ( AKA: G2G IPA) was indeed quite good. Their wheaty Pale was also good as well, even if I didn't get much of the wheat flavor that I do from the Modern Times version. Temescal Brewing may be my new favorite TB not named Taco Bell. Wait - Walk-in no wait Value - $7 / Pint. Dish Size: Temescal does not serve food but caters different food trucks. Beer - I tried of a few of their beers and they were all decent. There's nothing really special or unique about the flavors. I suppose the graphic design on the cans are pretty cool. If you're looking for interesting beers, there's much better places in Oakland. When I first arrived at Temescal Brewing, I thought I walked into an ice cream shop. The decor is nothing like how you would imagine a brewery to be. If anything, Temescal Brewing could pass as a Smitten Ice-cream. The interior space is very cute, with white painted walls, lightly colored glulam beams, a modular peg board wall shelf, pastel colored ceramic potted plants, and black and white stripped cushions. It all comes together to have a domestic atmosphere, as if you're in a hipsters' living room. If the indoors is the domestic cute area, the large outdoor patio space is the urban area. The outdoor walls are vibrantly covered in street art, cinder blocks are used instead of pastel ceramic pots for the plants, and wood for the furniture is a tone darker. The patio space is a great place to hang out as it's not overly congested. There is still ample amounts of picnic table seating with the added bonus of an umbrella for shade on a sunny day. It's a not major issue, but Temescal Brewing doesn't serve their own food. You can either bring your own food or they curate food trucks daily to park next to the patio. Personally I enjoy breweries which also serve their own food, for instance: Almanac, Drake's, Russian River, Fieldworks; because it's nice see their vision on how their beer should be paired with food. Temescal Brewing diverges from a "traditional" looking brewery, however, it still serves decent beer. A little research on Temescal reveals it's a prominent river in the area and when I asked the beertender if they get their water form their namesake they did not. It's a neighborhood with plenty of history, so I thought some homage would be paid like water source, variety naming, etc. It feels like a coffee shop mixed with an art gallery pinched with the industrial brewing equipment that's adjoined by a den of hipsters breeding ground. That is to say the nooks and crannies inside saw people streaming wifi on their mac's and doing what I imagine was college homework. The tile back wall is stark and clean with chalkboard menu's and ipad registers. It's popular so the washers are going pretty steady, but the menu is small and growing. I would have fully enjoyed a sour or a gose or a few more saisons, a lager or something creative. The warm smell of popcorn wafted and some curry/tumeric laced spice dust popularly made the popcorn sing. Free popcorn too. Prices on the beer were pretty reasonable, though in that 42-44 degree range versus a 36 degree range I prefer on my IPA's. The double was not balanced, just bitter, but the single was great, slight sweetness, plenty of floral, great mouth feel. The coffe stout was also excellent, I thought it to be their coffee roots I assumed based on design of the interior. The outdoor wall art seemed disconnected from the other décor/vision. The outdoor patio which is huge (1/3 acre has a dozen long tables and half dozen heaters, alcove seating surrounds along with games. It's very bike friendly with racks outside. The outside is well decorated and a huge draw for the casual brewery experience. The crowd is young and local. No drunks which was weirdly refreshing on a Friday night, that may be more a product of stature and location. They had a strange growler fill policy or rather sizing regulations, but I didn't fly with a gallon growler anyhow. Can you fly with a gallon growler? I was impressed because you could tell their vision is inviting, but the execution wasn't there. Service was great, price was affordable, beers could be bolder and more various. Most breweries of this size have twice the crowd and push 3 times the beer because the beer sells and people want to drink the good stuff. The lighting was cool, but maybe felt a little too open (elements wise) and the set up felt less beer garden than elementary school lunch tables set up. The outter alcoves fit 3 people maybe and the fit and finish of the wood fixtures (seating) were suspect af. I could easily pull a nail out by hand. I'll return because I'm not that much of a beer snob that just because they didn't impress me once doesn't mean that won't get better. That blocked front door design funneling to the side door entrance makes me scratch my head. I'm rounding up because I liked the popcorn, the size and the single IPA. read more

And on Fridays, the music is too loud too early. I mean why does queer Friday have to translate to club music. Why can't it be funkier? The beers are good, the space is nice, and they have a Ms. Pac Man machine and free popcorn. That's all great. Rotating food trucks are good too. My main problem with this place is they seem to think they're too good to be a bar. You're a bar, guys. Own it. This means, among other things, that they close far too early, but more frustrating than that is the fact that they often close up even before their "official" closing time. Several times I've gone in an hour or more before closing to be told that they've already had last call, and other times I've been there enjoying my beer and the aforementioned Ms. Pac Man only to be told that they're closing up 30 or 45 minutes before closing time. Boyfriend and I came here on their opening day during the Temescal Street Festival. They are a tiny little brewery with inviting industrial chic decor. They weren't doing tasters on their opening day due to the foot traffic brought on by the street fair, but I was able to try their pale and their stout. In terms of flavor, they're both a bit on the milder side but I think they advertise themselves as a "starter brewery" for those who are getting into craft beers. Regardless, I'm interested to see where they go from here (and their current tap list featuring a "peach-kissed saison" and "tart patio beer with cherry and lime" are very intriguing). My favorite part of this brewery (aside from all the free popcorn I can stuff in my face) is their outdoor patio. I absolutely love what they've done in terms of decorating with concrete blocks, some dirt, 2x4s, and lots of succulents. I know I'm not the only one who walked away from that patio with some fun weekend backyard/garden renovation ideas. I would recommend taking BART to MacArthur station and then walking the 2-3 blocks here instead of trying to find parking. Then you don't have to drive around in circles AND you can drink responsibly because you're not driving! Win-win! read more

HEY BAY AREA!! THE BEER HERE IS CLOUDY ON PURPOSE SOMETIMES! THAT DOESN'T MEAN IT'S "HOMEBREW". They are replicating the more HAZY, TURBID, soft, tropical, dank east coast flavors that you get more in New York, Vermont and the Northeast in general. That cloudiness and flavor profile seem to confuse west coasters who are more into that resinous/pine/bitter IPA bite.. Or just whatever "light pilsner" is on tap. The head brewer used to work at Cellarmaker so he must know his stuff. Lack of a point for allowing kids to run screaming through the backyard and even providing toys for them. I guess that's just the way the bay area rolls, but I prefer bars and breweries that are 21+ I want to give another lack of point because they wouldn't fill my 750ml growler with any of the beers I wanted because they were "running too low" I didn't really understand why that would matter, since they're making a guaranteed sale here to someone who is clearly invested in their beer enough to come by just for a growler fill, but I guess they want to make sure everyone gets a taste. But also, who cares? Someone else misses out but you sold your beer to a loyal customer so what's the problem? Anyways, i'll be back but will try and avoid family time and come when the kegs are new so I can get a fill. read more
