Very funny! BUT!!! be careful of a couple things: 1.) Don't order tickets on the website (go to location to get them), they charge way too much for a "service fee" which can be as much as $10 extra per ticket. 2.) DO NOT buy tickets for a show at the Tempe Improv when there's an ASU football game - - Improv does not accommodate parking for their customers. there is NO PARKING AVAILABLE in the lot at the Improv - We had advance tickets purchased to see DAVID SPADE, but spent over an hour looking for parking & missed the show!!!! Finally went to the ticket window & got refund. Suggest you get to the Improv parking lot before the all-day tailgaters/football fans do - - hang out at a restaurant/bar 6 hours before the Improv show - that's my recommendation! This review was for the Drew Carey show on March 8th, 2014. I googled "comedy shows in Phoenix" as the start to the evening. This was done on the Thursday prior. I was able to purchase tickets via the website. They were $60 which I though was reasonable. However, as soon as I printed the tix, in big bold letters it said "2 drink minimum PER person". I'm like ugh ... here we go. So my date and I arrive. Parking was tough -t he spaces are made for little electric cars. Upon entering there were hardly any seats. We were brought upstairs and way to the left corner. The seats were right behind a pole. We insisted on being moved and we lucked out and got slightly better seats with no pole in our view. The there were drink menus with no prices. I made the wrong assumption by thinking that the drink prices would be fairly reasonable. I asked the waiter if he knew of a sweet drink. He mention the Lemonade (alcoholic) and some passion drink. I said I'll just take the passion one. My date had 2 lemonades and I had 2 passion. The show was funny. Although Carey talked mostly about his damn penis alot and it got rather old. Fast forward to the end when the bill arrived. $57 for for drinks, most of which was ICE. Are you kidding me? Had I known this ahead of time, I would have not made the purchase in the first place! With tip, it cost more for the dang drinks than the show! I contacted LISA WALLACE who is the manager. She is currently working with me to get a partial refund - I asked for $30. I think part of their business plan is to get people in there, then hoodwink them into purchasing high priced drinks without disclosing the prices ahead of time. If they did, surely people would not buy them. It's a sleezy way of doing business. They would probably be better off including a drink in ticket price. They'd have more repeat customers and better online reviews. 2 Stars as an overall experience. Would have been 4 had the drink fiasco not occurred. read more

We went to see the hypnotist 2 Saturdays ago. There was a group of 4 siting next to us and they were a bit intoxicate before the show started. Then when the comedian came out one of the girls started heckling him. He warned her she would be removed, she then tried to come up on stage. He told her if she came up on stage she would be asked to leave the building. As they continued to drink the large bucket up beer she became more obnoxious. Well needless to say she went up on stage the comedian asked to have her removed. However they did not. So for the rest of the show we had to listen to her run her mouth and not hear the show. TO TOP IT OFF! They brought them another bucket of beer. Totally over serving them. I was very disappointed and I could of spent 100.00 on many other things. If I wanted to watch people that don't know how to control their alcohol I would have went to a party in Tempe instead. Very Very Disappointed. read more

Sweet merciful Jebus. I will never go to the Tempe Improv again. I used to go years ago, and always had a good time. I have been twice now in the last couple of months, the last time- and I do mean the LAST time- was last night for the taping of "Last Comic Standing". The management needs a serious and swift kick in the rear. The impression we were all left with is that they truly did not give a damn that we were left to stand outside for up to 2-1/2 hours later than what we were told, that we were just plain lucky that we got even one drink, and that the food we ordered- well, it just wasn't coming in the end. But who gives a crap? It's just their customers. Apparently we are all replaceable. A comedian who came up on stage to entertain while the judges and producers were debating the semi-finalists, gave some non-sensical explanation about how the "rules had changed" and that they had in fact made the food we ordered, but the staff got to "gorge themselves" on it in the back. They then had the audacity to ask us to pay for our drinks. The same comedian made reference to the Improv "making it up to us" somehow, but nothing came. Nothing except glasses of nasty tap water at the 11th hour. Oh- THAT was my comp for a miserable evening, starving and dehydrating? Gee, guess I should be grateful. Two stars for Bill Bellamy who was very funny, two of the wanna-be's who made me pee my pants a little, and getting to see Kathy Najimy and Fred Willard. Negative stars to the Improv itself for creating an atmosphere of discontent, hostility, and degradation. read more

Pauly Shore and the comedians were great. This is a negative review WARNING people that they auto gratuity your check. We got hit for 15% and my wife did not see it because it is dark in there. She tipped another $18. The server never mentioned he added gratuity to the check. We tried calling 6 times in a row after realizing on the way home and no answer. We will dispute the entire charge with our bank in the morning and they won't get a fucking penny... What an asshole of a server to not tell you like you are supposed to. Pisses us off! read more

We went to see Loni Love a great comedian but, I will not go here again they make you pay six dollars for a horrible tasting flat sodas 24 dollars total if you want to go with someone else, because of the two drink minimum so I paid ten dollars for tickets to see her and I wanted to buy her book but, with the awful prices was unable to, worst experience ever! As an Arizona native, I have been going to the Improv for years. I'm sorry to say that although it showcases some big names, the talent and atmosphere has really gone downhill. Despite the increase in comedy theatres in the East Valley, the Improv has not decreased their prices or upgraded the experience. I can go to three other comedy clubs in the area for $5-10 cheaper, and LMAO... which is the point! The last show I went to, I spent premium pricing to see David Spade, and I have to say it was joke. The show started about 30 minutes late and he appeared to be pretty intoxicated. It wasn't funny at all. After that debacle, I held off on the Improv for a while and just hit up the other comedy clubs when I needed a laugh. We decided to give the Improv another shot on Friday, because we really wanted to see Michael McDonald. I have nothing bad to say about any of the acts, unfortunately I couldn't enjoy them because I was trying to make my way through the worst Martini I've ever had... (cucumber). On top of it being awful, it was $12 (Of course there was no pricing listed). What a rip-off! The terrible Martini was not the worst of it, we were forced to share a table with another couple... okay not so bad, except they had us all packed in like sardines. The whole set up was ridiculous. No one's chairs were actually facing the stage. I had so much back pain from having to twist around to see the comics,( because there was not enough room to move my chair) that I just wanted the show to end so I could leave. To make matters worse, when we did leave, we realized that a large number of tables were actually left empty... so I went through all that discomfort for nothing! Big Boo for the Improv.... I have seen so many great shows here; Iliza Schlesinger, Felipe Esparza, Ari Shaffir and Nikki Glaser. I love how if you sign up to be a member they'll call you randomly and offer free tickets sometimes. That's pretty neat. That's how we ended up seeing Nikki Glaser. The shows are fun and really no matter where you sit you'll be able to enjoy the show. However, the cost of the drinks, holy moly are they super expensive. It's always a two drink minimum and boy do they add up quick. The first time we went we ordered some fun alcoholic beverages and with our four drinks and a tip it was over $70!!! That's insane. So from then on we only get a couple waters or soda. We've never eaten dinner here but we have tried their chocolate cake and it's really good and I don't usually like cake much. Service can be a bit spotty though depending on how busy it gets. However, I would keep coming back but I now know not to get any alcohol drinks here. read more

Been going to the Tempe Improv for about 5 years and seen atleast 12 comedians. I wouldn't complain about paying 47 dollars for two tickets, I last seen Bob Marley a week ago. The entertainment is great and the set up to view the comedians is very good. For the bad, the food and drinks are extremely expensive. I enjoy seeing the early dinner show to get a good seats and to not have to wait in line for the late show. Ordered the chicken sandwich which was average, probably should have added the bacon and avocado for extra because it was a bit dry. Costed $12 dollars which I belive should have been no more then $8. My date ordered chicken fingers which came with no fries, which was something new. I believe that was $10 dollars which was obsured. I didn't know the price of my dates vodka and cranberries in which she ordered three, but when I got the bill they were 9 bucks a piece ouch. My wine was $7 dollars and that was bottom of the barrell wine. The seats are really uncomfortable, they haven't updated those in forever and the tables are just bla. They really neat to amp up the inside of that joint and lower the prices cuz it's real bummer when you get the bill in the end. read more

I was part of a meetup group who were given 'free tickets' as long as we ordered 2 drinks. Not only were we disappointed by the acts - the drinks were way over prices ($12 for a coke and $18 for a sangria) which weren't even good? on top of that, they make you wait more than an hr before the real show. To get a little laugh, this turned out to be a bad idea. I wouldn't go back there again. read more

I purchased tickets for the Saturday night show on-line. When I arrived at the box office to pick up my tickets I was told they had no reservation for me. After a few minutes I was told that I did have a reservation, but only for dinner, not the show. Nobody could explain how that was possible. The two people that were working at the box office were as dumb as a box of rocks. I ended up leaving because between the two of them they could not figure out how to sell me a ticket from the box office. It was one of the worst customer service experiences of my life. It's never fair to judge a club by the comedians on a Wednesday night..... too bad, it would have earned a better rating because the actual show was great. Arrived with 4 friends and picked up our tickets, no issues. We were seated right up front and our original server quickly greeted us, brought us menus and told us about the special drinks for the evening; one of which was a mojito. One of my friends ordered the mojito and about 5 min later our server returned to tell us that they were out of mint. She was a good sport and just ordered something else but you would think that the servers would have been informed if one of the specials was unavailable. My white wine was served warm, gross. All of us ordered food. 2 of us got the Buffalo Chicken Sliders, one of us requested no blue cheese. After our food came I thought they had mistakenly brought both orders plain so I asked for a side of ranch. I later found a small drop of blue cheese on mine even though it wasn't enough to be noticed. Around this time, our original awesome server came over to tell us that he was cut for the night and introduce us to server #2 who quickly wanted to know what our second drink choice would be. One of my friends asked if food doesn't count as one of the items as she was the one driving.... No it doesn't which to me, it a horrible policy, especially if that policy is not made known. When the check came, I noticed that I had been charged $1.50 for ranch. I wouldn't have needed the ranch if my food was presented as it was advertised. The only thing we ordered that was actually good was the $8 side of sweet potato fries. I'm sure I'll be back because I enjoy comedy but next time, it will be 2 whatever-is-cheapest drinks and we'll go out to dinner elsewhere. read more

We went here tonight to see Jo Koy. I have never been to a comedy show before at an Improv theater so it was a new experience. This place is pretty rad. You can eat dinner here before the show, so its perfect for date night. Be aware that there is a two drink minimum, regardless of whether or not you are drinking alcohol. I had to drink a coke AND an iced tea tonight and paid $7 for it. I understand why they do this; it just would have been nice to know beforehand. The tickets to the show were $20 so I spent about $30 total which was totally worth it. The venue itself is pretty swank. There is no backstage at all so the comedians just mingle with the people. I got up to use the restroom during the opening act and saw Jo in the lobby drinking before his turn. It is pretty intimate, with dim lights and pretty small audience. If you sit in front be prepared to be heckled by the comedians. All in all its a fun little place to go with friends or on a date for a good laugh, and I will definitely be going to another show here in the future. read more

We love this place, haven't been disappointed, and we are here usually twice a month. Food is good, do remember that this is a comedy club first, and not a restaurant but it is better than "bar food". Servers are really good, very personable and efficient. The long tables in the main area can get crowded, but other than than, no issues and will continue to keep going back. read more

Terribly overpriced drinks :( the drink menu does not have any price written, cocktails cost us 15 bucks plus tax when u will see the bill . The bad part is even it says the cocktail is a grey goose vodka based .. I don't think the drink actually had any vodka in it for sure ., it's just ice and some cheap cocktail mix water .. Beer ( nothing on tap ) will cost 5 to 8 dollar for a bottle or can ., and the club has 2 drinks minimum ..,., it's a terrible place for food and drink .. 4 min price drinks at the end with tax and forced tips will cost around 60 bucks and the bad part is it's not even any good drink or nice cocktails .. Sound is good.. Seats are too close to each other so u will feel like you are sitting too close to stranger sitting next chair .. The whole thing is pretty much a overpriced rip off .., nothing compared to a concert like good comedy experience in some real nice venue which will cost not too much than this place .. I have been to Tempe improv many times and have enjoyed every visit. Until my last visit! We got the Valentines wine &dine package. The food was great, the server was great and Jo Koy was amazing. Unfortunately for us they somehow managed to over book the valentines package. Instead of prefered seating with everyone else we were told they had run out of tables. So Chip the manager in charge, Led us to a table to the far side of the stage. Second table from the wall to be exact. He apologized and said well at least you have your own table. Then about 10 minutes later they sit another couple at our table right in front of our view! We had to try to lean certain ways so we could see pass their heads! I'm sorry but when you spend $130 on a show you want to see the comedian not just hear him! I have never been so upset. What I don't understand is how do you over sell certain seats? You lay out the section, you know in advance how many seats are available! We could have saved a whole lot of money and picked other seats. The poor server didn't know what to do, didn't know we had dinner coming with the package I baught, so that took forever, almost to the end of the show. Had an excellent time Saturday night here to see Jim Breuer. Ticket prices were nice to see a popular headliner, even with a 2 drink minimum. Place was easy to find. Seats for us was fabulous.. (center stage). It was a great night out, only reason I gave this place 4 stars instead of 5 is because even with prepaid tickets we had to wait in line just to be seated. When it's over 105 out and a scare of rain I didn't like being stuck outside in a hot and sweaty line for 30 minutes. Service came around only once to take our drink orders and suggested to buy both drinks at once, which was a good suggestion, cause I never saw him again. Drink prices not on menu, and a little overpriced, but I weighed that out to the cheap ticket prices and felt it was a fair price to pay. Show was fun, place was clean and it was awesome that Jim stuck around afterwords for a meet and greet with fans. I will differently be coming back. read more

Let me start off by saying that I've been going to The Tempe Improv for 22 years. Last night we went to see Chris D'elia. I bought the tickets 4 months ago. planned it right, stopped by Copper Blues next door for a beer and then quickly got in line. We waited in line for an hour and 10 min, which is fine, we planned it that way so we knew we'd get good seats. When we got up to the podium we were asked how many people are in our party (which was 3) and then told that we'd be escorted up to the balcony. I asked why, since you could see that the main downstairs room was only a quarter full. She answered me with, we just need to. The balcony was being seated the same time as downstairs. From above we were easily able to see the hosts seating allllll of the people who showed up to get in line after us a nice seat downstairs. You'd figure that if you planned your evening accordingly, and waited in line that long (ahead of 200ish other people) you would have better seats than the people who were in the back of the line! The balcony should be for the people who got in line last (or those who request to sit up there). Booooo Tempe Improv, boo! read more

We go to either the Improv or Stand up live at least 1 time a month to see different comedians....we went to see Ricky Gutierrez tonight and he was fricking hilarious! However, our service was great, but our friends who sat right next to us at a different table because we had 6 people in our party...their service was horrible!!! They got no water on their table when we got 4 glasses from our server. They both ordered the bottomless ginger ale, and got no pitcher (which when we go I always order either bottomless soda or tea because I always drive) and I ordered tea tonight and got a carafe of tea with my full glass. They got only a glass...OUR waitress got them a pitcher of ginger ale. But, the biggest issue was that it was soooooo hot in there that people were complaining left and right and usually when you are leaving the club you hear everyone saying how funny the comedians were...but, not tonight...EVERYONE was talking about how stinking hot it was inside. It was 104 when we got outside the club and it was way cooler than inside the club. Even Mr. Gutierrez was complaining about how hot it was in the club, wiping the sweat off his head and brow repeatedly during the show. They need to turn up the AC when they have a sold out show...we will go again to see how it is but if it is that hot again we will not go back...we will stick to stand up live and the new comedy club that opened in Scottsdale. read more

Just got home from seeing Kevin Nealon. This review is in no way a reflection of the fantastic show he always does...just the venue. I took my mom for her first ever improv experience and she was so excited. Then a group of 6 extremely intoxicated ladies came and sat at the tables behind us. The irresponsible waitress gave them even more alcohol...beers, shots, more shots. This group of over served, drunk, obnoxious girls talked during the entire show. I asked our waitress to ask them to stop and she said she would get security. She did and the security staff member stood right next to their table and watched this group of rude girls carry on and after a few minutes he left...that's right, left and never did or said anything to stop these shameful girls from ruining the show for everyone around them. Others around complained as well but the drinks kept flowing and the conversations continued. So awful, I paid good money to take my mom for a great night to see a very talented comedian and it was ruined by the bad behavior of a bunch of over served ladies and irresponsible wait staff. read more

Absolutely LOVE this place. The only reason that I am not giving it five stars is the price of the drinks. There is a two drink minimum, and they are a bit pricey. I got the special May Day and they were fifteen dollars a piece. They were delicious, but thirty dollars for my drinks alone is a little costly. The staff was very quick to handle hecklers, which we appreciated. I was worried that with it being so close to the colleges that it would be a college crowd, but was pleasantly surprised. We went this past Saturday to see Chris Delia, and our group of 10 were less than impressed. When we purchased our tickets on line, it stated 75% of your group needed to be there before you were seated. Ok. No problem. But when 8 of our 10 showed up, the young girl up front was very rude and said she would not seat us. That we all had to be there. We pulled out our ticket with the 75% verbiage clearly printed, and the other girl up front said (in a very snotty tone), "Ugh. Go ahead and seat them." Like they were doing us the favor. Really? You honestly need to get new employees to work your door. The waitress, well, she was the best thing of the night, next to the comedians. Very nice. Pretty attentive. What was annoying was the fact they do not print the drink prices on the menu. Of course, we are all adult enough to ask before ordering, but were shocked to hear some of the special mixed drinks were $10-12.95/each. And the bottled water was $6. I splurged and got one of the $12.95 specials, and it was terrible. Very small and not even mixed well. All 10 people in our party complained after the show of the lack of quality drinks. We have been to many other comedy clubs throughout the years, and this place just doesn't hold up against the others. Cramped/awkward seating. Very hot in there. Terrible acoustics (we were seated along the wall and the view was kind of awkward too). Terrible drinks. Rude staff at the door. The comedians and waitress were really the saving factors for the evening. It really could be a fun place to go, but until some improvements are made, I doubt we will be going back any time soon. read more

Only time I laughed was when I got my bill, I literally downloaded the yelp app just to post this. Tempe Improv is hardly a comedy club, it's an excuse to shut you in a dark room with a bunch of other suckers and force everyone to pay for at least two $14 watered down cocktails. I always take care of my servers/ bartenders when it comes to tipping, but when the check came I thought it was time to show just how dissatisfied I was with this terrible excuse for a comedy club. Turns out it was time for the second joke of the night, because there was 15% auto gratuity on the check. So that makes for two jokes total. $34 for 2 shitty drinks + $50 for the tickets. I was extremely excited to come to the Tempe improv last Friday (8/21) because I'd never been! When we arrived everyone who worked there was very pleasant! Once we were seated however, no one came to greet us or even take our drink orders for at least 20 minutes. After the first 10 minutes of us waiting, we even asked a host if he could grab a server for us, but another 10 minutes went by with no service, and the show was about to start. Once we finally tracked down a manager, we informed him and he apologized profusely and sent over a server immediately. Kimmie was absolutely fantastic and really turned the night around for us. Once we had been served by Kimmie, we realized that ALL of the servers were running around like crazy... Most likely from having too many tables. I have worked in a restaurant for the last 11 years and obviously don't like complaining. So my only request is that this establishment would staff a few more servers. Other than that... Everything else was wonderful and the managers even bought us shots for our wait. I really appreciated Kimmie taking wonderful care of us after such a rough start. Stoked to have a first rate comedy club in the area! Just saw bob marley last night and had a blast. as for the club, i don't know what the previous one looked like but it's like the Carnegie Hall. When it's a full house they mean full! We didn't com early enough to be sat up front so we sat on these back rail seats which turned out to be awesome bc I prefer more room. Our server was super nice and took care of us well. Get a juke box hero!! I'd knock em down and she would be back more rounds. Overall awesome show and experience. Cheers! read more
