The bar is a little "cliquey" from several observations. The regulars seem to get waited on immediately and a newcomer gets a "I'll be right with you". No placemats, no silverware, no napkins seems to be the norm. Had to ask for ketchup when my fries came out after getting chips by mistake. We will most likely go back though, especially since The Bird River Inn changed their whole menu and did away with most of our favorite menu items. Everything is smoked now and very salty. If you're looking for ambience, you may want to try somewhere else. The Dugout is a hole in the wall dive bar and has been for decades...just the way the regulars like it!

We got the Belly Buster Fried Fish sub ($8.99), with a side of fries (an extra $2) and Italian Cold Cut ($9.50), with a side of chips (free), along with a Loose Cannon ($5.00) & Grapefruit Crush ($6.00). The subs were pretty good. The fried cod (I believe it was) was nice and crispy and the tartar sauce paired perfectly to cut the richness of the grease. The portion was definitely money's worth. The cold cuts in my sub were fresh. There was enough acid to not make the bread soggy. The grapefruit crush was very icy. I noticed the bartender made it by blending a grapefruit fruit cup with ice and some grapefruit-vodka. When I was done with my first drink, she poured the rest of the mixture from the blender into my glass, which I thought was very nice. All in all, dugout tavern is a hidden gem that has great food and service. There is also parking on site and outdoor seating.

Nice location with plenty of parking and it was packed, I was not expecting so much traffic inside but this place was jumping. I opted to sit in the dinning area which had nice lighting and room for the whole family. I got the rockfish tacos and TT's tiki tea both were great, service was just fine Maria was very attentive. After being seated, we waited quite a while before anyone came to our table. It was very loud in the restaurant. Thankfully, Marie eventually helped us, and she was very personable, attentive, and kind throughout the meal. We specifically came for jumbo crabs, so I was disappointed when we were told they only had mediums available. Marie assured us they had been very good despite the size, so we ordered a dozen. After another wait, she returned to tell us they only had smalls left. The crabs we received were tiny -- barely legal size, if even -- and almost completely empty. There was practically no meat in them at all. The manager came over, took seven of the crabs I had already opened back to the kitchen without explaining what she was doing or appoligizing, and later brought out seven replacement crabs that were still very small, though slightly better. What made the experience even worse was being charged $65 for crabs that honestly felt worth a fraction of that price. The quality was unacceptable, and the manager handled the situation poorly with no communication at all. Marie was the only bright spot in the entire experience. Sadly, after this experience, we will not be returning anytime soon.

The Bay Bridge Wrap had a huge crab cake and shrimp salad with lettuce and tomato, and it was so good and extremely filling. I opted to get it with fries instead of chips. Highly recommend. The music was loud old-skool hip hop, which I love. There was also some great R&B. They have two pool tables constantly occupied by players who had brought their own queues. It was fun to watch. I ordered the chicken quesadilla, the husband ordered wings and french fries. The chicken quesadilla was delicious, served with salsa and sour cream. The wings were a little dry but the fries were great. I was going to give Freddie's 4 stars until I woke up the next morning and saw the 18% gratuity charged to my bill. I had not seen it and had tipped 20% so my server got a large unintended tip. I will not be coming back to Freddie's but at least now I know how they roll.
