I had not idea this existed in Cary Town. I had a friend in the past purchase something for me by them. I was always intrigued and thought it was only online. Welp, nope. There is a Ten Thousand Villages an hour from my house in Richmond, VA! The day we walked in the staff were very friendly. We walked around looking at al the beautiful items. A friend who was with us bought a mat made out of old recycled flip flops. It was so unique. I almost bought a beautiful pair of earrings. My kiddos loved all the little musical instruments. We were excited to stop in here but it was a bit of a letdown. The store didn't appear very well-stocked and rather empty. We've been to a different location of this store elsewhere and had a completely different experience, so maybe this location just keeps less merchandise? The prices were rather high and ultimately, we left empty-handed. Overall, just not worth a visit, which is a bummer considering fair trade and supporting the artisans. read more

I love fair trade stores. I love the merchandise they offer, the variety of things they have in stock from so many indigenous peoples. On this particular day, the shop wasn't busy as the day was moody and overcast, with a slight chill in the air. The street outside had some foot traffic, but the store was bright and welcoming. The scent of fair trade coffee beckoned me inside and my party fell right in step. I love and appreciate that everything is made by international artisans and every price tag tells you a story and which country the item was made. There is always a beautiful quality selection of jewelry. Its a wonderful place to purchase wedding gifts too. I always forget this store is here, but I never regret stopping in. I like to get ideas for unique accents for my house, and I also LOVE that this is a fair trade store that imports from all over the world. The store itself is set up by color mainly, though jewelry and bags are all in one corner... And considering the fact that all this stuff is coming from overseas, it's incredibly affordable. Of course there are some hand-carved chess sets and whatnot that are more expensive, but they are well worth the value. I saw two really gorgeous screens and a ton of gorgeous pottery... This place is also great for kids presents, if you are the type to get something educational or meaningful, and not necessarily made of plastic. I saw worry dolls (remember those?) that I was tempted to buy for my nephew, as well as some lovely wooden puzzles. I almost bought a necklace for $20 that looks like stained glass, but at the end of the day it was a little too ornate. ALL of the items are non profit, they're all hand made items that come from different parts of the world AND everything is made to practice sustainability!!!!!!!!! Each item is unique, individual, and everything is VERY reasonably priced! All of the items have a little storyline then about where they each came from and who made them. Everything I have ever purchased has been reasonably priced and has been loved by the the person I give them too. Helpful, friendly and down-to-earth staff! Having just moved to Richmond I was in need of a few furniture items for my new house and this store had everything I needed. A gal named Anya helped me pick out a beautiful handmade end table that looks outstanding and will last me for decades to come. I also ended up getting a lovely patterned lamp and a few other odds and ends. Great selection, cool business model and really great staff make this store a lovely place to grab some items for your home/apartment/office. Instead of going to Wal Mart or Target and buying something that will fall apart in 2 years spend a few extra bucks and get some beautiful international treasures. A+ 10/10 will shop again. read more
