This is the only world class tea shop I've found in the Houston area. They were originally affiliated with the Ten Ren Tea company and have since gone their own way. They source directly from the same set of tea plantations that Ten Ren buys from and generally have superior teas to The Path of Tea. The only limitation is their strength. They focus exclusively on Chinese/Taiwanese teas. So, if you want something else you need to venture to another spot. read more

The place is full of tea and more tea. I walked in the place was greeted warmly and I asked my questions was swiftly show several options. They have lots of Kong fu style tea pots and anything have to do with tea they have it. They were patient and sow me around with my endless questions. Hmm, I always thought this place was Ten Ren Tea, not Ten Yen Tea. None the less, my family has been going here for over five years on occasion. The selection is extensive and the service has always been good. Don't expect them to sell Lipton Sweet Tea or instant Nestle. This place sells quality whole tea leaves and even some "hand picked in the mountains in Taiwan". The price can range from $30 to $100+ per pound. The price may sound outrageous, but once you smell and sample some of the tea you will be tempted to buy some. It can be quite soothing. read more

I've been to every department store looking for a tea pot that would hold loose herb tea no luck, until I stop into this little shop that had many different kinds to choose from. My first time here still remains, in my memory, one of the most surreal experiences I've ever had. Without knowledge of the chain or its origins, I came in one day, friends in tow, on my sister's recommendation. As we walk in, we espy a man in full-on traditional costume(country of origin: vague) playing a shamisan(maybe) behind a glass wall. We are then greeted by the proprietor, an amiable woman a bit too reminiscent of a zen Yoko Ono, who asks us nicely if we'd like to sample any tea. Of course we want some tea. She had some jasmine blossom tea out and proceeded to show us how to steep the tea properly whilst seated on an overly ornate marble and wood table: Exactly seven beads per pot. Hot water poured in. Swished 12 times until beads blossom. Never have I had such perfect jasmine tea until then. After sampling a few more, we walk away with nearly a pound of various interesting teas. All high-quality and very good, Ten Ren Tea got me started on my $100/year tea addiction. read more

This is the best place to come if you want excellent high quality Chinese tea. They offer a vast variety of tea selection of loose leaf tea you can buy by weight or opt for pre-packaged gift box of loose leaf tea that's perfect for gift giving to avid tea drinkers. The store also sells tea bags, tea cups and sets and ginseng. My personal favorite is the 403 King's Tea that leaves a natural after taste of sweetness in my palate. Pauline was kind enough to educate me on the correct way to steap tea while offering a sampling of their tea. Good tip I learned, so leaving the tea leaf in hot water will not only add consumption of caffeine and quickly deteriorate the taste of the tea. You're suppose to separate the tea leaf from hot water after 45-60 seconds. Opposite side to the tea area, Herbalist Lin will take your pulse reading for free and assess all the ill functioning organs and secret aches or flaws from your body that you've been secretly coping with. Pauline serves sample of savory tea while you sit in the waiting area to get your read in the private room. It's apparent of how potent and effective the herbal pills are as I hear several claims of how the pills have dramatically improved their well being from the fellow patron of regulars sitting with me in the waiting area. Result: I can honestly say that the pills have reduced my mouth sore's healing time and increased my energy level after a couple of days with the herbal pills. Definitely worth a visit! read more

We just got into Taiwanese Oolong tea in Seattle and wanted to see if there was a good shop in Houston. This place was top-notch - high quality, highly knowledgeable staff and very fair prices for the level of teas they're selling. Better selection and prices than what we've seen in Seattle. They are a distributor for the Ten Ren brand of teas but also buy direct from farmers under their TECA brand. My wife and I got hooked on High Mountain Oolongs from Taiwan, typically grown above 1500M. Only specialty shops carry these teas, but not everyone who sells them knows what they're talking about. The folks at Ten Yen really do know their stuff, and not just about Oolongs but Te Quan Yins, Pu-Erhs, greens, blacks, etc. They were great about sampling the teas - we were there for the good stuff and they didn't hesitate. Lots of knowledge was shared and they spent plenty of time with us to help us make our selections. Teas like these can be bought online, but given variables such as climate, location and which farmer cultivated the plants it really helps to sample each tea. They do mail order as well, and given the quality in each sample we tried I would have no problem buying remote. We bought two teas - some Da Yu Ling (spendy but some of the best Taiwanese oolong) and a High Mountain Oolong grown at 1600M that the store bought direct from a farmer for a great price. We also bought a clay pot for making tea. It's a starter pot, not one of the finer ones - at their recommendation since we are still learning. All in all, this is a great store for fine teas. Houston, you're lucky to have this place and I look forward to stopping here on my next trip. read more

Ten Ren is Taiwan's most famous and wide spread tea company, and sells a lot of relatively harder to find teas, and its a bit pricey as well. Additionally, some tea purists aren't exactly fans of the company as they use some preservatives to have their tea keep longer. I had an old landlady in Taipei County tell me that as far as she can tell, only foreigners buy from Ten Ren. That's not true, of course. You will be hard pressed to find many of the teas offered here anywhere else in town, and I highly recommend going in and at least sampling the tea. Don't be too put off by the Taiwanese staff's enthusiasm-- they just want you to like the tea! Some recommendations-- if you like darker, heavier tea ask to sample some of the Pu-er(h) and red teas they might have. If you like lighter and medium teas, ask about some of the Green and Oo-long tea. If you like REALLY light tea, ask about white teas they have. read more

This place is an absolute treasure. We walked in here because we were two doors down at Quan Yin. We knew nothing about tea and were offered hot oolong tea as we walked in the door. We were taken to school on traditional loose leaf tea by the owner, Richard. We bought some tea to try and went home. I have been there many times since and have always been happy I made the drive. I have dealt with everyone who works there and have found them all pleasant and knowledgeable. The atmosphere is relaxed and casual. I like to go there and buy a pot of tea to try. They always offer to brew it for you if you don't know how, I would recommend watching them. If you are feeling friendly, a nice thing to do is to offer another person a cup of your tea to try. They have a nice selection of high quality, yixing clay tea pots. They also have a wide variety of teas: oolongs, pu'erh, black and white. As well as other "non traditional" teas. I highly recommend you give this place a try. read more

So I am a really big tea fan. I have read a lot about different kinds of teas and I have tried quite a few different varieties. Just like a wine enthusiast, you can say I am a tea enthusiast. I have driven hundreds of miles around Houston trying to find a store which sells REAL tea. By real I mean the actual leaves. I have been let down everywhere went...Then I found Ten Yen. It's a bit hidden from view right at the corner of Bellaire and Wilcrest in Chinatown. When you walk in, you walk in tea city. Everything that you will ever, need..EVER, that's related to tea, you will find there. Clearly what I am saying here is that this IS the best. It is the elite of tea stores in Houston. They have every tea variety you have probably heard of; From white teas, to green teas, to oolong teas, to puerh and black teas, they have it all. The quality is at the top and the prices are not as high as people say. Sure if you are used to buying tea bags, it will be pricier. But I have bought white tea from eBay, straight from China which is the cheapest unless you go to China and buy it from there. Ten Yen had a better price AND the quality was outrageously better. The teas are always fresh and the owners are super friendly. They know their tea and could probably answer any question you have. Go to Ten Yen and check it out. This tea store is in the heart of Chinatown, which is not a New York-style Chinatown but rather a section of town where all the Chinese live and work. It's worth the trip as its got some great gems like this place. I'm new to tea and wanted some loose leaf tea but was surprised to find that it's so expensive! Most of their teas are $100 per pound but a pound of tea is an awful lot. You can purchase it by price (Ex: i want $10 worth.... Or by weight). Either way, the tea quality is great and they are very nice and will teach you about preparation of the tea and storage. read more

I really like this place! The girl who is usually there made us feel very welcome our first time, and is super knowledgeable about the teas and flavors, and really considers your preference before making a recommendation. I just love her! But besides that, the tea is great, you can get a 'cup', which is a few small cups worth of tea, or make your own pot of tea, which usually has enough tea left over for you to take home and enjoy there too. And they come with delicious cookies/ crackers. It's so nice to go and enjoy quiet conversation. Never tried a herbalist place before. Went because my tonsils were becoming inflamed and I was afraid It was early symptoms for strep throat. The herbalist was very nice and actually listened to me, unlike many American doctors. I drank the tea for a few days, twice a day with some chicken soup and I was back to normal without having to take antibiotics! Thank you so much !! read more

The owner was very rude to my father. When his mother previously owned the place, she was very nice and cordial with the customers. Ever since her son took over the store, he has not been ethical in his business practises. My parents ordered the most expensive tea on their inventory and the owner gave us something that was obviously not what they ordered. He refused to stop adamantly arguing with them. We understand store owners are still people too, but the way he handled the situation was very churlish and impolite. The customer is always right; not in the sense they are always correct in their judgement, but it is the seller's responsibility to satisfy the customer, not argue with them. read more

This is one of the few places to get authentic Chinese/Taiwanese tea in the whole state of Texas. I lived in China for a few months and got accustomed to drinking good tea, so I was really pleased to find this place. It is very genuine, except for the Styrofoam cups. You can sample several before buying, just like in China! They have a nice selection of teas that are organic (i.e. no pesticides) which are even difficult to find in Beijing. The tea can be a little pricey, but not unreasonable for the quality that you are getting. The staff is very knowledgeable and will tell you temperatures and steeping times for any tea you buy, so you don't have to be an expert. I have tried various pu-erh (tuo cha, compacted balls of fermented tea) and oolong (black and high mountain) teas and all are excellent. Most tea types can be obtained at various prices/quality. I should say that the GABA tea bothered my stomach a little, but no one else I know had any trouble with it. You should realize that the caffeine content of Chinese tea is significantly less than English/Indian teas. I can drink pu-erh in the evenings with without any problem going to sleep, but English/Indian teas rob me of sleep if I drink it after 4pm. read more

This place is a hidden gem. Very knowledgeable staff with great selection of tea. I came in looking for Yin zhen or Silver Needle white tea for drinking as well as a basic green and black for kombucha brewing. To be honest, I was surprised that they knew which would be perfect for kombucha. The Yin Zhen is not easily found and theirs is top quality. I have a very sensitive palate and could tell immediately. I didn't have much time to explore but I will definitely be back to try new teas and learn more! read more

Ten Yen was recommended to me because I was having some long term health issues. I had previously always relied on traditional American medicine. Chinese Herbs & a change of diet have me feeling better than I have in a very long time. Chinese medicine heals the body while Western medicine gives a quick fix but doesn't heal the body re chronic conditions. I am truly amazed at the difference. read more

I don't know much about tea, except that I bought some green King's Tea at Ten Yen about 2 years ago and I have not had any other tea since that was a good. I went back to Ten Yen and was treated very kindly by a young woman who helped me pick out the 313 King's Tea, of which I bought a 4 ounces, and she gave me a small sample of the 403 King's Tea to take home and compare. My friend and I were also given a sample of another fine and unusual tasting green tea to sip while in the store. It was very nice. However, I forgot to get the name of the tea, as we were a bit hungry and left quickly to go to a few doors down to Pho Hung. I found the instruction on how to brew tea very helpful and I appreciate the friendly nature of the help that I received. I'll definitely being doing more business with Ten Yen Tea & Ginseng. read more
