AVOID AT ALL COSTS. I signed up for Invisalign and was told by office manager that if I cancelled within 30 days the cost would be fully refunded. I cancelled well within this period because they couldn't figure out a previous billing issue and I had lost faith in their ability to bill accurately. Not only did they not refund the first 50% deposit, but they charged the second half as well! It took me over 3 months and dozens of "Membership Specialists" to get the first half refunded, and they are now refusing to refund the first half. I don't know if they are unethical or incompetent but I cannot speak poorly enough of their customer service and billing department. AVOID AVOID AVOID. I should add that the reason I had the first billing dispute with them is that they recommended I have a deep cleaning, and then upcharged after it was done saying "our estimates are only estimates". Somehow every dentist's office I have been to in my entire life has been able to exactly match their estimate so it does appear they are just attempting to get extra money out of customers - or like I said earlier, totally incompetent at billing. read more

Do not come here!!!! I never write reviews but I had to share my experience. It seems as though this echoes many other reviews. I started coming to this office after having regular 6 month cleanings with absolutely no problems, but my old dentist stopped taking my insurance. At Tend, with each appointment, I was being told I had a new issue -- I "needed" a mouth guard, appointments every 4 months instead of 6 for my "gum disease," and required an invasive deep clean scaling appointment for my gums. This was a shock to me because I had never had any inkling of a problem with my previous provider. After 3 exam appointments and 2 treatments, my last straw was when they told me I had six new cavities. SIX?? I had been coming to multiple appointments within the year there is no way I just generated six new cavities after never having one in my life. I stopped working with Tend and ended up joining a new office after a year without a cleaning after these "six cavities" ... what do you know, the new office said my teeth were perfectly fine and didn't require anything special. This company is a corporate scheme that has an extremely low threshold for what they will treat for -- up-charging you for unnecessary treatments and extra visits for no reason, seemingly to pay for their fancy, modern gadgets. I love Tend. I live in Columbia Heights and usually go to the one at 14th and U. I needed to cancel because I was sick. I called to let them know that morning and said I could come in, but I was sniffly and coughing and felt like it would not be nice for the staff. They waived the cancellation fee (I see some of you don't like getting charged for cancellations, but try being on the other side of that equation some time... people can be pretty flippant about wasting your time). Anyway, they waived the cancellation but there were no new appointments available there until March (it was Jan 28 when I had to cancel). So I went on the app, and scheduled an appointment for Feb 1, saturday at Navy Yard. The hygienists at both locations have been the best. Great, gentle technique. Friendly and professional. The offices are beautiful and well maintained. The business model Tend is perfect. Let a large company maintain a consistent quality environment, equipment, office management, billing, payroll etc etc. Use that economy of scale to pay staff well and give them benefits. Free up the dentists and dental staff to provide the best service they can and give us a good way to feedback our good and bad experiences. You can have a bad experience anywhere sometimes...but IMO Tend offers the best dental experience more consistently than any place I've been before. read more

Unfortunately, a very disappointing experience. I went in for a simple scraping and cleaning and after a hour of waiting in the chair for the diagnostic to be completed -lots of back and forth - they had not even began the cleaning process and then told me that I would only be getting a scraping and not a polishing. It was clear that TEND is more concerned about pricing up the 'treatment plan' than actually providing the treatment that you came in for. An expensive boutique beauty shop at best and a questionable ethically dental practice at worst. Flashing marketing for very marginal level of professional medical service. I never thought I would be nostalgic for dentistry from the 70's but the entire experience leaves me with a recommendation to bring a calculator and, of course, bricks of cash for all the add-ons. read more

Tend is a millennials or aesthetes dream. The place is pristine and clean. You walk in and just feel at ease by how aesthetically pleasing it is. The first time you visit they give you a mini toiletry bag, which obviously matches the mint decor with a toothbrush, floss, paste...the usually. I went for my yearly cleaning/check-up. When they take you back to the cleaning area there's a smart display that say Welcome, "your name". Rather than regular googles, they give you these chic Ray-ban type glasses. It's 100 percent unnecessary but I absolutely loved it. Listen, if you appreciate the little details, Tend does it well. Cleaning-wise everything went smoothly. When you schedule the appointment online they ask you what show you want playing and what flavor you want for your cleaning. They had Great British Baking show on for me and got my flavor right so no complaints there. My dentist and assistants were all so sweet and it was great talking to them, so I appreciated the hospitality. Things that didn't go so smoothly, taking my x-rays took forever. They have a wireless x-ray scanner and I'm not sure if it was user error (I think the assistant was new) or equipment issues but she kept having to retake photos because the pictures either weren't taking or saving to the computer. A 5-10 minute task to about 20-30 mins. The second thing is they do push the breezy braces agenda a little too much. I thought I was scheduling a follow up about removing my wisdom teeth and I had a few question about Invisalign. When I got to the appt it was only a Breezy Braces consolation and that's the only option they offer. I told them I wasn't interested in Breezy braces so we cancelled the appt and I went home. I was a little annoyed that i hobbled over there only to hobble back home (I was injured and using crutches at the time. If I wasn't injured it wouldn't have been a big deal since I only live a few blocks away). Aside from those two issues my experience with Tend has been great. I plan on making it my new dentistry until I move away from Navy Yard area or otherwise. read more

Had my first visit today, was an emergency visit and I couldn't be happier with the service I received. Immediately warmly greeted by Veronica at the front desk, my wait time was minimal and the dental assistant and dentist (wish I wrote down their names) were so kind. The room was beautiful and customized for me. the doctor explained what my issue was and made several recommendations before writing me a prescription and referral. Beware: they charge $100 for cancellations within 48 hours which is just ridiculous. I'm so sad my insurance changed because Navy Yard Dental just down the street was so much better and flexible. Went for a routine cleaning which wasn't bad but like other reviews they had a laundry list of services I need that would cost $$$. I let them book an appointment to get them off my back but need to cancel because I have to travel now for work and have been calling all week but just sit on hold. Now I'm within the 48 hour cancellation window and still cannot get in touch with anyone. This place is all smoke and mirrors. It looks fancy and welcoming, but it's disorganized and poorly run with a very rude staff member managing things. After my consultation for an implant that went well, I scheduled my first appointment to start the implant process. A day or two before that appointment on a Saturday, a snippy staff person called to coldly inform me they'd have to reschedule my appointment because they were understaffed. (It was Labor Day weekend, and I think they forgot that when I made the appointment.) I was pretty annoyed, considering I had already waited a month for the appointment. I was also frustrated that not only was the next appointment not available for another three weeks, but they also didn't have any openings on the weekend. I'd have to come in on a work day, which I was trying to avoid. But I scheduled the appointment anyway only to show up... and they had mis-scheduled me AGAIN - this time for a cleaning instead of the implant. As a result, I was informed that they'd need to reschedule me AGAIN because one doctor was on vacation and the other was at the other facility. They also couldn't even figure out what service I was supposed to have when I arrived. I had to describe what the doctor told me I was supposed to have. You know what's more important than being able to pick out the flavor of your toothpaste and what you want on TV? Being professional and organized, and respecting your customer's time. You can't even schedule appointments efficiently or fix a mistake you made TWICE - and you think I'm going to trust you enough to conduct light oral surgery? I don't think so. I went to this place for a cleaning and to get the back of my dental implant refilled since the composite bond had fallen out months ago, and they completely ruined my dental implant. It is now significant shaved down, jagged, and my smile is noticeably altered. This now has created a huge obstacle as I try to find a new tooth and a surgeon to install it. Don't do it. Always a scheduling mishap. If you call the main number, you don't talk to your location in particular. They say they relay messages to that location, but they don't. It's happened 3 times to me. If you call to say you're stuck in traffic, they'll say it's ok and then they cancel your appointment before you arrive. While the people who work there are nice, it's the most inconvenient way to have a dentist appointment. I am giving one star because there is no option to give zero stars or negative stars. My daughter went to Tend Dental Navy Yard in October for a cleaning. She was told that she had 3 cavities/fillings to be replaced. She was given a treatment plan that showed insurance will cover a portion leaving an out of pocket of $393.20. The Tend representative told my daughter that the out of pocket is the maximum we would need to pay. The procedure was done in November. Insurance covered the procedure at a lower rate. Insurance indicated that when Tend ran the estimate, they should have seen that the procedure is covered at a lower rate. Per insurance, Tend should have told my daughter that insurance pays at a lower rate and therefore, we can go elsewhere or pay a higher out of pocket. They did not tell my daughter. Since November, I have been trying to work with Tend Dental to get this resolved. They insist their estimate was accurate but will not provide any proof. My insurance plan did not change from October to November. It is the same plan. In speaking with my local dentist, they said that Tend should have known the procedure is covered at a lower rate and told us as such. Tend then should have told us that they will accept the lower payment as full payment or told us to pay the higher amount or go elsewhere. They did not do either. I also spoke with a contact at Delta Dental. They said the same thing that my insurance company (Anthem) told me. Tend would have seen that the procedure is covered at a lower rate and told us our options. I have tried calling and emailing Tend. They will not return phone calls. They insist they did their estimate correctly but will not provide any proof. I have asked to speak with their legal representative but no response. They have terrible customer service. They give the run around. They have contacted me after the Yelp review saying they would like to make the situation right. I have given them my phone number to call. This was on Tuesday but nothing yet. This place is a fraud. In reading the Yelp and BBB reviews/complaints, this looks like a standard practice of Tend Dental - deceptive billing practices. I am shocked that the State AG's office does not do anything. read more

This clinic offers modern and Instagram-ready first impressions. The back end of this practice, however, has so much to get together. They are going to call you. They'll send text messages, emails, and then they're going to call you again. They'll make mistakes, and then they'll send a message about it. At one rosy moment, Tend was contacting me more than my own partner. First, during your visit, I would recommend not taking the Bluetooth headphones they provide for you to watch the Tv on the ceiling. If they're not disconnecting every so often, they are clunky and just get in the way. When the doctor or hygienist speak to you, you can't hear them. Although the intention may be good, they become an unnecessary distraction. I began going to Tend last year. My first couple of appointments went smoothly. At my third, suddenly I was advised I needed to visit more frequently. When I asked questions about these extra visits and costs, the hygienist would seem annoyed and reply, 'As I said before,' or, 'As I said at our previous appointment...' and when I asked about the cost of these visits, her answer was, 'That's above my pay grade.' I heard both these seemingly canned responses at least twice over two visits and found them off-putting each time, to say the least. I felt anxious and pressured. About the cost, the billing receptionist checked my insurance, which she even remarked was great insurance. She had a question for her manager, who happened to be there. The manager looked at the screen confirmed what she saw. I was quoted a price for my next visit with the manager present, which I paid when I checked in at my next appointment a month or two later. A day or so after that appointment, I received an email from Tend around 6 pm, which stated candidly that I had a balance owed from my last visit--for more than 80% of what I was quoted and already paid! AND the email said they would just go ahead and charge the credit card I had on file! I replied to the email and called the next day. I read all my notes carefully. I explained I was irritated, that it wasn't personal, and my complaint was well-received by a manager. I wasn't charged any additional fee at my next visit and was even attended to by a different, gentler and more patient hygienist. Although that visit was fine, I decided that would be my last and that I wouldn't leave a review since they took my feedback so well. Either it was a billing error on their end, and the extra 80% due was not factual, or Tend absorbed the cost. It didn't matter; the problem was resolved, and I would just go elsewhere. Three days ago, I canceled an appointment I had scheduled for today several months ago--well within the policy of canceling/rescheduling at least 48 before the appointment. I tried to cancel it online but was advised I'd need to call. I called their New York number and spoke to a remarkably uninterested customer service rep, who canceled the appointment for this morning. This afternoon, I received a voicemail offering to reschedule the appointment I missed this morning! --and that's when I decided I'd write a review. I'm moving on. Tend's contemporary design, state-of-the-art technology, and smily receptionists are a smoke screen to a practice that clearly needs to hire or train more competent personnel to meet the standards they pretend to have. Started out a little rough with scheduling. They had to change my appointment and also my wife's. We are glad we stuck with it though, my visit went great. The office is new and modern. Loved the music and the TVs on the ceilings. The front desk checked me in quickly, answered my questions, and was very pleasant. My hygienist was very easy to interact with and did the most thorough check up I've ever had. The dentist was very pleasant and explained her dental plan for me. This company is so unprofessional. I wanted to start a relationship with a new dentist, so I made an appt. in November of 2022. They cancelled on me, with zero explanation, just a few days prior. I decided to give them another shot this year & made an appointment (months in advance) for 7/18 (and took off work.) I receive an email today, that my appt. has been cancelled. I came in here because I wanted to try a new dentist. My appointment was for 11:30 am, I was taken back to the exam room at 11:36 am. Then someone took a full mouth x ray and said it would be covered. Uh no. It is not covered because I already called my insurance company and was told it would not be covered. The x rays took about 15-20 minutes and was very uncomfortable. Then at 11:55 am, the dental hygienist came in and says I have to make another appointment to get my teeth cleaned, WTF?! Yeah no. We all have jobs and it is very inconvenient to come back here when enough time was not carved out for my initial appointment. Screw that. I never heard of making an additional appointment to come back and get my teeth cleaned after getting x rays done because there is not enough time for the cleaning.What kind of business is this? It was not my fault the x rays took so long to complete. It is a very pretty facility and the receptionists are nice but other than that, don't waste your time. I am going to get slapped with a bill for the x rays since the insurance was not checked thoroughly (full mouth x rays are every five years with my insurance). Thanks a lot. This place is extremely trendy, clean, and nice. They give you a bag of dental goodies when you walk in every time, which is nice. The reason I do not recommend this place is because I believe they are only looking to get as much money from you as humanely possible. The way they do this is recommending unnecessary procedures. When I went to sign up for my appointment and checked if my insurance was in network, I was informed through their website that it was. I went in for a cleaning (it had been a while, so I was expecting some damage). When my X-rays were done, then dentist said I needed three cavity fillings and I had some crowding in my front bottom teeth that warranted braces (I have never been told that I ever needed braces from any of my dentists in the past). The dentist spent at least 5-10 minutes explaining the benefits of their "breezy braces" and that I should come in for a consultation. I also showed signs of grinding my teeth at night and that I should get a mouth guard. I have never heard any of this from my past dentists, but like I said it had been a while so I assumed maybe I did need some extra TLC. The cleaning was nice, but they didn't even take into consideration the Netflix show or the fluoride flavor I chose online, so that made it seem like they actually DIDN'T care to make it a personalized experience. When I booked my next appointment for my cavity fillings, they wanted to book my other appointments for braces consultation and the mouth guard, but they strongly informed me that the mouth guard was mostly covered by insurance, although the fillings seemed overly expensive. When I went to my cavity filling appointment, I tried using my Health FSA card, but they said they couldn't process FSA cards and I had to use a different card. Fine. I get the cavity fillings, and when we talk about my mouth guard appointment, they said it would cost $450!! Originally they said it would only cost me $90!! When I pressed them about them saying before that it was mostly covered by insurance, they made some excuse up and that it actually wasn't covered. I soon after looked into tend from my insurance company and found that they were OUT OF NETWORK. I cancelled all future appointments and will never be going back. This place is out to put you in a vulnerable situation to extract as much money as they can from you. Go to a family dentist!!! read more

This was by far the best dental experience I've ever had in my life. The first appointment I had was to get a routine cleaning and they even had an emergency so had to reschedule me to avoid and potential exposure to covid and they were so accommodating to my schedule even with that in mind. After my cleaning I had to get a few fillings done and I was able to get them all taken care of in one appointment within a few days of my original! Great cleaning experience. I appreciate the thoroughness of the yearly check up. My hygienest was amazing. She took super high res photos of my teeth that showed some cracks on the fillings that i don't think anyone can see without the photos. The cleaning was deep and thorough. They were quickly able to pull up insurance costs and put of pocket costs for procedures. The video was a nice touch, I'd Rather hear Paul Hollywood rip some biscuits apart talk then the drilling machine! read more

PSA: If you are getting any recommended dental services done at Tend, make sure to ask if there are potential risks of these services that could lead to additional dental services and more money that you would need to pay! At this Tend office location, the dental medical professionals recommended that I remove an old filling and replace it with a crown even though the tooth was not bothering me at the time. After they made it sound like a routine procedure and that I would only be on the hook for about $500 with my insurance, I decided to take their professional medical advice and proceed with this crown service. After removal of the old filling and installation of the temporary crown I had to go back into the office a week later for a lot of pain in the area of where they did the dental work. I was informed that I now needed to have an emergency root canal procedure done on the tooth in order to save the tooth. This additional procedure would cost me around $2500. Luckily, they messed up my insurance billing (I corrected them) so it won't end up being $2500, but they are leaving me on the hook for the remainder of the charges the insurance won't cover for a procedure I did not need until the services they performed. Bottom line: I trusted their professional medical advice on recommended dental work that was portrayed to me as a routine procedure. At no point prior to them performing the crown dental work was it made clear to me verbally, in the clinical notes (that I also don't see until I request them), nor did I sign any paperwork with the understanding that if they performed this dental service it could lead me to needing an emergency root canal procedure to save my tooth that would leave me on the hook to pay for. Therefore, be cautious about taking their professional medical advice without asking about the risk, because they may not tell you. Doing so may end up saving you from a surprise additional dental bill. read more

If you are in need of a cleaning that's covered by insurance, Tend is a satisfactory dental experience. However, if you need anything beyond that treatment wise, I would not recommend going here. I came in for a routine cleaning (which was totally fine and my hygienist was very pleasant and professional) but quickly was told I needed to get several fillings that would total close to $20,000. Without discussion or opportunity to discuss the treatment or any further preventative care, I was urged to sign on the dotted line and set up treatments as soon as possible. I certainly understand that diagnoses like these vary from dentist to dentist and that each have different approaches, but I immediately felt like I was being pressured to spend as much money as possible without much discussion. I ended up going to another dentist for a second opinion that essentially negated my Tend diagnosis and helped me set up a preventative care plan instead of spending thousands of dollars on unnecessary treatments. My experience is not unique to this location as I've had several friends in DC with the same situation, so seems to be a company wide philosophy to be aggressive with treatments and making money. Another important thing to note is that these locations don't have individual phone lines. It took me several hours to call through the main company wide Tend phone line to be able to access my own dental records to give to my new dentist, which is a pretty non-customer friendly way to run a business. Moral of the story: clean and shiny business, but will try to squeeze you for every $$$$$ you have. read more

I really enjoyed my Tend experience and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a dentist. I had no issues with my insurance and felt they only recommended treatment I needed. At all times they kept me informed about payment requirements, and I never felt surprised. What many should realize is that how much you pay is dictated by your particular insurance. So even if they accept your insurance, that doesn't mean everything will be covered, which they very clearly explained to me. I primarily liked how automated the scheduling experience was. This was my first time ever using Tend, and I have to say the team was incredibly courteous and mindful from the first email contact to the final goodbye. They have made the details their priority - from an opportunity to supply one last brush before the appointment after being in the office all day to walking me through my new insurance, payment, and scheduling opportunities.
