This was my first time at a Bib gourmand and also trying Burmese food. I was very excited. The restaurant's atmosphere is so calming and welcoming and the waiters were so nice and attentive to us. My friend and I shared the Roti with Dip and the chicken wings as appetizers. The Roti Dip was OUT OF THIS WORLD (6/5). It exceeded my expectations. The Roti was very soft and crispy and the dip had an amazing coconut/herby taste. The waiter saw how much we loved the dip and brought us another one to use for our rice. Big shout out to her! The chicken wings were okay. Not that spicy for me (I have a high spice tolerance) but I expected them to be more savory. They were cooked very well though. I would give it a 3/5 Unfortunately, I was pretty disappointed with my main which was the crispy whole dried fish. I am a sucker for whole fish dishes so I was pretty excited and expectant for something spectacular. The fish itself was bland. It was very crispy and cooked well but not really seasoned. I had thought the sauce they serve with it was intended to impart flavor on the fish, but the sauce was just very tangy and not flavorful. I did finish the fish though but it's not something I would get again. Overall a 2.5/5. Their coconut rice was good though I was expecting more of a coconut flavor with it. I would rate that a 4/5. It was cooked very well. I think this is a really nice place though, perhaps I just did not order the right or more popular dishes. We just missed Tru Burger by minutes, and since we had recently been to Brenda's, timing (and a little luck) led us to TENI. The menu felt very similar to Burma Superstar--but without the long lines or the hype. We ended up enjoying a lighter, abbreviated meal in a really cool setting, paired with excellent service. I have eaten in many Burmese restaurants and was very disppointed in this restaurant. The roti was softer than what I am used to; the roti dip was thin; tea salad was just awful; coconut rice was good; and the lamb curry did not taste like lamb. Portions are small for the price you pay. I never had a mango lassi served room temperature - it should have been served cold - it was just awful. Had a great experience at Teni! We came on a Saturday evening during peak dinner hours and were pleasantly surprised to be seated right away. The service was excellent, and our food came out quickly. Our table of four shared several dishes, and everything was delicious. The coconut chicken curry and the roti with dip appetizer were definite standouts. We loved the roti so much that we ordered a second round because it was so flaky and fresh. The only minor complaint that I'd call out was the tea leaf salad. I was expecting something a bit more substantial, but it was mostly just spinach, which to be honest, isn't my favorite and wasn't what I was used to. The cocktails were also fantastic! Went here about two weeks ago with a bunch of friends for lunch on a Friday. I got lucky and found some free parking around the corner. The place looks absolutely fabulous inside. Modern, swanky decor, think of something from the Pottery Barn catalog. It was not very busy for lunch. Server was really nice, but there was only one, so we had to wait a bit. I ordered a lunch special salad with chicken. It was pretty good, except that the dressing was extremely salty. It seemed to be a fish sauce based. I probably would order something else next time or get the sauce on the side. I got a few items to go, which were better, IMHO. The Pea Shoot Salad ($15) was a riff on the Tea Leaf Salad and it was great. The dressing is different on this one, sort of like a mild citrus vinaigrette, which worked better. The Coconut Bayleaf Shrimp ($25) was amazing! The flavors were really complex and worked well together. It was even better with the Coconut rice ($5). Highly recommended! To be honest it want my favorite. The flavors were very different than the standard Burmese cuisine I've had over the years. It seemed like a mixture of Trinidadian mixed with Eritrean mixed with Indian to be honest! Great location and the service was good. The drinks were a little weak but bit bad. read more

Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand 2024! This is now my favorite Burmese restaurant. At 11:30AM on Saturday, my fiancé and I were the first customers. Immediately, we were warmly greeted. The friendly and efficient service lasted throughout our whole lunch. Our server made great recommendations on the menu as well. Here's what we ordered (spoiler alert: everything was delicious) -- Crispy Spicy Catfish: this was fire. My favorite dish of our meal. The spice comes on the side so you can adjust your spice level according to your preferences. The fish was perfectly fried, so crispy on the outside but still juicy on the inside! A 10/10 from me. -- Chicken Cardamom Curry: deliciously warm and filling. The chicken pieces are generous and juicy. We ordered rice on the side to pair with the curry. -- Tea Leaf Kale Salad: excellent flavors! I recommend starting with this. Tastes savory and crunchy. -- Roti with Dip: the roti is veryyy buttery but still good. Warm and easily pulled apart. Paired great with the curry we ordered This area of Oakland seemed pretty walkable and nice (ish). Street parking may be harder to find on a busier day. The food here was nearly excellent, however, the service was not. The host was not able to find our reservation; this is not something I expect to help with at a restaurant. Our server brought a to-go container that was crushed and far too small for what we wanted to pack. The dishes were creative and flavorful, but the execution was okay. The potatoes in the Coconut Bayleaf Shrimp were not warm. The sauce was not warm and the potatoes were actually borderline cold. The pea leaf salad and coconut rice were great. With vegan family members in town, we needed dinner from a restaurant which could satisfy them AND the dedicated carnivores. We got carry out from Teni East and both factions were happy. First: ordering on line was easy. The vegans had some questions and were able to reach a PERSON to answer their query. We got Roti, spicy chicken wings, kale tea leaf salad, crispy skin salmon, chicken with basil & cumin, bok Choy with shrimp, tofu with spicy coconut sauce, bok choy with mushrooms and rice. Food was still hot when we got it, the spices were bright, servings were not large but adequate. (One person complained there were only 6 small shrimp in her entree). We seem to have gotten a cashew tofu dish instead of the bok choy/mushrooms but the vegan was pretty happy with the substitution. The tea leaf salad was too kale-y for my taste but I ordered it knowing what it was so that was on me. All in all we were happy with our choices and the quality/value. There were no leftovers! I had the most INCREDIBLE experience here. It was our friend's birthday and a small group of us wanted to coordinate a surprise celebration. The staff was accommodating with our requests and assisted us with the arrangement. The inside has bar seating, tables, and half booths against the walls. Had one of the $17 lunch specials today, which included basil cumin chicken, pea shoot salad, cauliflower with sweet corn, and coconut rice. Everything was delicious and very flavorful. The chicken had just the right amount of chili pepper to give it a little kick, and the salad was very fresh. The portions were also quite generous - I'm over 6' tall and 200 lbs, and left feeling perfectly full. I was seated and served right away, and the service was attentive without being excessive. My only suggestion on what could have made the experience even better would have been some Burmese music, rather than the upbeat Latin music that was playing today. We started off with the roti just to get a feel of their dishes and flavor and stopped there because the curry was just odd tasting. It tasted like a mildly spiced split pea soup with all the peas in the curry sauce. The roti was lukewarm. This was not worth the $13 price tag. Therefore, we didn't order any other dishes. Wow... There's so much to say! 3 adults, 2 children... we ordered 5 different entrees. Everything was unbelievably wonderful. We've never had Burmese food before, so this was definitely a hit or miss opportunity. Fortunately for us, everything was a hit, with everyone. Or maybe, that was a sign of the quality of the Restaurant, Chef and/or Staff. In a couple of days, we'll be on our way to sample more Burmese food, at a different restaurant,,with my Brother and his Wife. This might help us know... Just how special this meal was, at Teni. I love this restaurant. I come here often for the wings and the pea shoot salad. They are both exceptional. Tonight I asked my husband to join me and we ordered the beef curry. When it arrived, it looked like it would simply melt in our mouths. Instead, each chunk of meat was so hard we couldn't even cut it with a fork without great force and rocking the table. We asked our waiter if this was unusual since we expected it to be soft - we told him it was difficult to eat. He said he thought this was the way it should be and asked if we wanted a knife. One should not need to use a knife to eat the beef in a curry dish. So my usual five star review for this place dipped to three. I will likely be back, but I will limit my selections to my two favorite starters. I simply can't spend another $27 on a very small curry that requires a steak knife. Even for the potatoes. Very nice place to pop in for a quick delicious shared lunch with a roti + dipping sauce, and a chicken finger salad. Both were delish! I don't know Burmese good at all, but dang that roti was flaky and warm and the dip was all kinds of wonderful flavor.
