We just missed Tru Burger by minutes, and since we had recently been to Brenda's, timing (and a little luck) led us to TENI. The menu felt very similar to Burma Superstar--but without the long lines or the hype. We ended up enjoying a lighter, abbreviated meal in a really cool setting, paired with excellent service. This was my first time at a Bib gourmand and also trying Burmese food. I was very excited. The restaurant's atmosphere is so calming and welcoming and the waiters were so nice and attentive to us. My friend and I shared the Roti with Dip and the chicken wings as appetizers. The Roti Dip was OUT OF THIS WORLD (6/5). It exceeded my expectations. The Roti was very soft and crispy and the dip had an amazing coconut/herby taste. The waiter saw how much we loved the dip and brought us another one to use for our rice. Big shout out to her! The chicken wings were okay. Not that spicy for me (I have a high spice tolerance) but I expected them to be more savory. They were cooked very well though. I would give it a 3/5 Unfortunately, I was pretty disappointed with my main which was the crispy whole dried fish. I am a sucker for whole fish dishes so I was pretty excited and expectant for something spectacular. The fish itself was bland. It was very crispy and cooked well but not really seasoned. I had thought the sauce they serve with it was intended to impart flavor on the fish, but the sauce was just very tangy and not flavorful. I did finish the fish though but it's not something I would get again. Overall a 2.5/5. Their coconut rice was good though I was expecting more of a coconut flavor with it. I would rate that a 4/5. It was cooked very well. I think this is a really nice place though, perhaps I just did not order the right or more popular dishes. Had a great experience at Teni! We came on a Saturday evening during peak dinner hours and were pleasantly surprised to be seated right away. The service was excellent, and our food came out quickly. Our table of four shared several dishes, and everything was delicious. The coconut chicken curry and the roti with dip appetizer were definite standouts. We loved the roti so much that we ordered a second round because it was so flaky and fresh. The only minor complaint that I'd call out was the tea leaf salad. I was expecting something a bit more substantial, but it was mostly just spinach, which to be honest, isn't my favorite and wasn't what I was used to. The cocktails were also fantastic! Went here about two weeks ago with a bunch of friends for lunch on a Friday. I got lucky and found some free parking around the corner. The place looks absolutely fabulous inside. Modern, swanky decor, think of something from the Pottery Barn catalog. It was not very busy for lunch. Server was really nice, but there was only one, so we had to wait a bit. I ordered a lunch special salad with chicken. It was pretty good, except that the dressing was extremely salty. It seemed to be a fish sauce based. I probably would order something else next time or get the sauce on the side. I got a few items to go, which were better, IMHO. The Pea Shoot Salad ($15) was a riff on the Tea Leaf Salad and it was great. The dressing is different on this one, sort of like a mild citrus vinaigrette, which worked better. The Coconut Bayleaf Shrimp ($25) was amazing! The flavors were really complex and worked well together. It was even better with the Coconut rice ($5). Highly recommended! To be honest it want my favorite. The flavors were very different than the standard Burmese cuisine I've had over the years. Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand 2024! This is now my favorite Burmese restaurant. At 11:30AM on Saturday, my fiancé and I were the first customers. Immediately, we were warmly greeted. The friendly and efficient service lasted throughout our whole lunch. Our server made great recommendations on the menu as well. Here's what we ordered (spoiler alert: everything was delicious) -- Crispy Spicy Catfish: this was fire. My favorite dish of our meal. The spice comes on the side so you can adjust your spice level according to your preferences. The fish was perfectly fried, so crispy on the outside but still juicy on the inside! A 10/10 from me. -- Chicken Cardamom Curry: deliciously warm and filling. The chicken pieces are generous and juicy. We ordered rice on the side to pair with the curry. -- Tea Leaf Kale Salad: excellent flavors! I recommend starting with this. Tastes savory and crunchy. -- Roti with Dip: the roti is veryyy buttery but still good. Warm and easily pulled apart. Paired great with the curry we ordered This area of Oakland seemed pretty walkable and nice (ish). Street parking may be harder to find on a busier day. Had one of the $17 lunch specials today, which included basil cumin chicken, pea shoot salad, cauliflower with sweet corn, and coconut rice. Everything was delicious and very flavorful. The chicken had just the right amount of chili pepper to give it a little kick, and the salad was very fresh. The portions were also quite generous - I'm over 6' tall and 200 lbs, and left feeling perfectly full. I was seated and served right away, and the service was attentive without being excessive. My only suggestion on what could have made the experience even better would have been some Burmese music, rather than the upbeat Latin music that was playing today. Usually, when I go out to eat a regional cuisine, it's wonderful to feel transported by the experience - the food, decor, and music - to that country/region. read more

The food here was nearly excellent, however, the service was not. The host was not able to find our reservation; this is not something I expect to help with at a restaurant. Our server brought a to-go container that was crushed and far too small for what we wanted to pack. The dishes were creative and flavorful, but the execution was okay. The potatoes in the Coconut Bayleaf Shrimp were not warm. The sauce was not warm and the potatoes were actually borderline cold. The pea leaf salad and coconut rice were great. I loved the flaky roti which is a fun departure from the standard rice. I had the most INCREDIBLE experience here. It was our friend's birthday and a small group of us wanted to coordinate a surprise celebration. The staff was accommodating with our requests and assisted us with the arrangement. The inside has bar seating, tables, and half booths against the walls. It's lightly dim giving a perfect occasion for date nights, family dinners, celebrations, etc. Once everyone was seated, our server was attentive and gave out suggestions for drinks/food. Their special cocktail menus are studio Ghibli-themed! We ordered various of dishes as we were doing a family-styled meal. The food was superb and overall exceptional. The coconut rice was bomb - pairs well with every entree!! That side dish was a MUST with the curry. Wow... There's so much to say! 3 adults, 2 children... we ordered 5 different entrees. Everything was unbelievably wonderful. We've never had Burmese food before, so this was definitely a hit or miss opportunity. Fortunately for us, everything was a hit, with everyone. Considering how I've enjoyed just about every meal I've ever had at Burma Superstar (hyped as they may be), it's no surprise that Teni East Kitchen has been on my list of bookmarks to try for a while now. As far as service goes, our sever was terrific - super friendly and she checked in on us often (helped that the restaurant wasn't all that busy). If I lived closer to Teni East, I'd certainly come back to try more of what their menu has to offer (especially their Tea Leaf Salad) and I still wouldn't mind in the future. It's just that, given how the portions felt a little light across the board, the drive, bridge toll, and everything else involved, I'd probably lean towards checking out another restaurant on my list of bookmarks before coming back again. Seriously, the weirdest roti with curry I've ever had. And not in a good way. We started off with the roti just to get a feel of their dishes and flavor and stopped there because the curry was just odd tasting. It tasted like a mildly spiced split pea soup with all the peas in the curry sauce. The roti was lukewarm. This was not worth the $13 price tag. Therefore, we didn't order any other dishes. I love this restaurant. I come here often for the wings and the pea shoot salad. They are both exceptional. Tonight I asked my husband to join me and we ordered the beef curry. When it arrived, it looked like it would simply melt in our mouths. Instead, each chunk of meat was so hard we couldn't even cut it with a fork without great force and rocking the table. We asked our waiter if this was unusual since we expected it to be soft - we told him it was difficult to eat. He said he thought this was the way it should be and asked if we wanted a knife. One should not need to use a knife to eat the beef in a curry dish. So my usual five star review for this place dipped to three. I will likely be back, but I will limit my selections to my two favorite starters. I simply can't spend another $27 on a very small curry that requires a steak knife. Even for the potatoes. UPDATED to FIVE STARS: the owner of Teni reached out and apologized for what happened and made it right. I don't know Burmese good at all, but dang that roti was flaky and warm and the dip was all kinds of wonderful flavor. First of all, let me say the food was superb with wonderful flavors and textures... and the service staff are quite personable. I'd love to give them 5 stars, but.... I went with family and friends to Teni's a couple of times the last week. The first time I was very impressed with the quality of the food prep and presentation. The only problems were (1) the extremely high level of noise (perhaps caused by the flat surfaces on the walls and high ceiling?) and (2) the dishes arrived in haphazard fashion. At our initial visit to Teni's, the first meal was delivered to our table 20+ minutes before our next diner was served. When we had initially arrived, there was only one other table occupied. Soon afterwards the other tables filled up. And shortly after that all these other tables were busy eating their meals as we waited... and waited... for the meals for others in our party to arrive! Eventually they did and the waitstaff apologized for the delay. The food was great so I decided to give Teni's another chance. This second time some of our food arrived more quickly but once again came in sporadic fashion with some of us getting our meals 5-10 minutes before others. The meals were still wonderfully delicious. But, once again we found the noise level incompatible with conversation. It's too bad they haven't put up some sort of noise absorbing materials to allow for folks to talk rather than shout in order to be heard. I guess that's just how this restaurant rolls. read more

Wow, how is it that we've never been here before? The roti was heavenly either with or without the sauce. The ginger turmeric chicken was amazing with delicious chicken breast, but I also liked the noodles and cardamom curry chicken at our table. The coconut rice has a sweet flavor with a touch of garlic and the cauliflower and corn was also worth ordering. I don't know how I could not get the ginger turmeric chicken again though, it was perfect! I'd recommend the ginger honey tea as well. Had dinner with a friend here and it was delicious and delightful. I use a wheelchair and there's no steps but a bit of an incline to get in the door. The dining area is spacious enough to get around and the bathroom is great-plenty of space to turn. Staff was very welcoming, friendly, and attentive. I love Burmese and the tea leaf salad with kale was a bit of a twist. They used lime juice instead of lemon which was quite nice and the kale leaves were soft and combined well with all the ingredients that make up the dressing. Flavor was complex and vibrant. We got the roti with dip and that was delicious. Dip is not too spicy and very tasty. Also got the chickpea tofu and it was a standout dish. I haven't seen it on other Burmese restaurant menus. They make it in house and it's a must try. The sauce is spiced perfectly and is rich and delicious. It had a little bit of heat to it but not too spicy. The "tofu" has a beautiful texture soft and creamy like a baked sweet potato. It melts in your mouth. The ambience is very nice as well. They have some cool furnishings, some beautiful art on the walls, and have a sticker collection on these exposed wooden posts that you're welcome to add to. Definitely will be coming back as there were many things on the menu that I'd like to try. Also, the drink menu is so cute! A lot of studio Ghibli references. Teni in Oakland serves delicious Burmese food. They offer a TON of gluten free options. I've enjoyed lots of GF meals here in the past. Stopped by for a takeout order yesterday, enjoyed their rice noodles with chicken, coconut rice, veggie curry, and my favorite - ginger chicken salad. Unfortunately, there seems to be some cross contamination as I am suffering from gluten poisoning post meal. I would recommend TENI as a lovely place to dine, if you do have food allergies I would offer a warning to maybe stay away. read more
