Drinks: Mai Tai and I can't remember what my wife had. When I tell you that the Mai Tai was strong and yummy.. I'm not lying. If it was not close to closing time when we walked in, I would have had another one. It had me feeling really good after the week I was having. Food: We shared a chicken, shrimp and broccoli. This restaurant delivered openly dismissive, biased treatment that made the space feel unsafe and unwelcome, and no one on staff stepped in to correct it. What happened After requesting a to-go box twice, the server ignored my requests twice, making direct eye contact and then deliberately ignoring me the second time while actively engaging other guests around me. ​ When I finally had to force an interaction and directly asked for help, his exact response was that he "did not care" and that I was "not in his section," as if basic acknowledgment and human decency were optional extras. ​ Several other staff members were close enough to hear and watch this exchange and chose to do absolutely nothing, sending a very clear message that this level of disrespect is tolerated here. ​ Bias and discrimination The pattern was not a simple oversight; it was targeted indifference that communicated my presence, comfort, and business did not matter in that space. ​ Being ignored twice, then told outright that my experience was irrelevant because of internal table assignments, reflects a deeper bias about whose needs deserve attention and whose can be dismissed. ​ This is exactly the kind of inadequate service and disparate treatment that anti-discrimination agencies recognize as part of discriminatory customer experience, especially when complaints are brushed aside or minimized. ​ Management and culture failure No manager intervened, no one apologized, and no effort was made to repair the harm, even after it was crystal clear that the interaction was hostile and unacceptable. ​ When a staff member feels comfortable saying they "don't care" to a guest's face, it signals a culture where respect is optional and discrimination can flourish unchecked. ​ A restaurant that allows staff to openly ignore and demean guests while coworkers look on silently has a systemic problem, not a one-off bad night. ​ Service rating and warning to others Service rating here is a hard 0 out of 10; there was no basic acknowledgment, no hospitality, and certainly no sense of safety or belonging. ​ Anyone who has experienced discrimination or targeted disrespect should document and share their experience so patterns of behavior at businesses like this cannot hide behind curated ratings. ​ This place needs serious review and accountability, because there is every reason to believe I am not the first, nor will I be the last, person to be ignored, humiliated, and mistreated here. This place has got its going on. An interesting fusion of Thai, Szechuan and Cantonese, but predominantly Cantonese. Here is how it scored: Chicken and Basil Shumai 5/5 really tasty and innovative Kitchen Sink Chow Mein: 5/5 kind of a cross between chow mein and lo mein so they are fried noodles with a thin sauce. Garlic Basil and Tofu fried rice 4/5: the flavors were unique but the fried tofu didn't do it for me. Chicken would have been better. Sesame Chicken: 5/5 really well executed They do a really good job tenderizing the meat and plumping up the shrimp and not overcooking anything. Came hear after attending a memorial service. The service was good, the reviews looked promising. But the overall experience was lacking. We came around noon on a Saturday and it was chill so service was great. Peter was our waiter and he was very friendly and made the Martin's Secret Mai Tai. We asked him to make it strong and it was strong.... After lunch, I knocked out for two hours LOL it usually takes four cocktails to even get me buzzed so that mai tai definitely has a secret HAHA We got the spicy fish and beef chili soup on the specials menu for $26. Three of us shared and finished it. Perfect amount! It was good and flavorful - only thing is I wish it was spicier! It had noodles, beef, fish, and wontons. The fish taste is not strong at all! If you don't like cilantro, make sure you ask to not have it because their cilantro is strong taste lol The crispy shrimp bao bao is also on the specials menu and is $20. It is two plates - one is the white bread and one is the cole slaw + fried shrimp. You put the cole slaw and shrimp into the bread and eat it like a lil wrap. It is good! Surprising twist. Very filling too. We finished it. There's a small parking lot but if you can't find parking, there should be street parking. I definitely recommend coming for lunch or dinner. We ordered online through their website and confirmed with them over the phone but when we came to pick up our order at the appropriate time, nothing had been cooked. I know it's a busy holiday but this is the second time this has happened (hence the phone call to confirm). While they were very nice about it in the end, at first they told me I must have ordered at a different restaurant and then asked me for my name and confirmation number multiple times. Had a really great experience at five spice kitchen we were dropped off by an Uber and in Piedmont and we had no idea where the restaurant was where we dropped off the restaurant was not shown and you have to walk around the corner and you'll be able to find the restaurant. The bartender Daniel was extremely nice knowledgeable and knew the drink that we would like to try is their original Mai Thai! his words exactly where it's not like the ones you get in Hawaii and let me tell you it definitely is not. This is not your sweet Ma Thai. It's definitely heavy on the pour and one goes a long way. Let me tell you. As we got there pretty early the place was not pretty packed but by the time we left to go to our show around 7 o'clock, the place was pretty full . The food comes out pretty fast and quickly and it's extremely hot and warm and taste like a home-cooked Asian meal. We ordered the fried calamari, the potstickers chicken, chow mein, and shrimp fried rice and we even wanted to order more, but I knew that we would be stuffed by just those dishes because none of us were going to be carrying leftovers to the next event. The chicken chow mein had huge pieces of chicken in it and the shrimp fried rice had beautiful big shrimp. The calamari was perfectly crisp and it came with different types of jalapeño pepper. It just needed a little bit of a sauce or something to kind of finish it off. The potstickers were delicious. Revisited last Friday night con mi hijo. Still excellent. Try the salt and pepper wings with jalapenos; these are a must get, and I do not like chicken. Szechwan "Mala" beef is one of those dishes you return again and again for; yeah, that good. I wasn't even aware there was a Chinese place in Montclair Village! And what a nice one. Bis and airy with tasteful decoration. My friend and I met here to have a quick bite before a show. The first surprise was the extend of their bar. We quickly realized we should have carpooled, so at least one of us would be able to get buzzed :-D. We shared a lavender martini (which was excellent and VERY strong) and a lemon ginger tea to even it out - also super good. For food we opted for two apps and an entree. The won ton soup and basil glazed wings were very tasty and left little room for the main dish. We decided to go with the clay pot and had some miscommunication with the server. We thought it would contain tofu, pork belly, OR fish. But it was an AND situation. A bit weird... we were both not big fans of the combination. The communication with the waiter was a bit difficult in general, but overall we were more than happy and both decided to definitely come back, take a Lyft and try their famous Mai Tai. read more

The waiter reached right over my plate THREE TIMES to serve the person next to me. He didn't even acknowledge that I was sitting there. I don't know if this was a sexist thing, or what, but I was incensed. We ate and had a good time chatting, as this group always does. It came time for the check, and the waiter was sitting at another table with his colleagues, talking and ignoring us completely. I finally got up and walked over to him and asked for the check. The chow mein barely had any vegetables and the veggies we did have were uncooked. The chow mein was also definitely not chow mein as it tasted like garlic noodles instead. Finally, an east coast Chinese restaurant in California! We came on Mother's Day and they served us free champagne. Service is as amazing as the food. Wow wow wow! Good food, good service. Had the Wor Wonton Soup and it was wonderful. I'm just a little frustrated because the happy hour sign at the entrance feels misleading. It turns out the happy hour prices only apply to drinks ordered directly from the bar. I was dining in, so beer was full price and I only found this out as I was paying. I just think, based on the sign, I had no reason to expect I wouldn't be getting the happy hour deal. It's only a $3 difference in this case, not gonna lose sleep over it, but I think the sign should say that the happy hour is only at the bar. read more

Amazing food, great service and nice, clean restaurant. What more can you ask for? This is not your run-of-the-mill Chinese restaurant. Their flavors are unique and bursting with spices and flavors. It is comfort food elevated. I've been here in the past when it was under a different name and it was good then, and even better now. We've only gone for dinner and there is always a lot of people dining there. The service is also on-par -- staff is always friendly. We usually get the on fire chicken (that's a popular item), chow mein and crab Rangoon. Other items I've had: green onion pancake, sweet and sour pork, dried fried chicken, sesame balls, dumplings, among many others. Most of their dishes are good. I forgot to mention their cocktails don't disappoint. Just know that the bartender is generous with the pour. This place is a must visit when you're in the neighborhood. read more

The service was pretty poor. My friend and I each ordered noodle dishes. Her's came out pretty quickly and mine was more than 10 minutes later. When we asked where mine was we were told it was coming right up but it had to be another 5 minutes. She got garlic noodles with chicken and veggies. At first she wanted pork and veggies but they told her she couldn't have it. So she go the chicken. This made no sense to us. I ordered tofu and broccoli and the noodles tasted exactly like the garlic noodles. The tofu's texture was like it hadn't had the water drained out of it. The broccoli was left in large florets, not bite size as you would expect. No subtly in the dish at all. I was disappointed - the last 2 times I had been here, the food had tasted quite good and the service had been excellent. A bunch of the employees were watching a football game - maybe that had something to do with it. Bummed. read more

This is a new Chinese restaurant in Oakland's Montclair Village. I ordered takeout by phone and the order turned out pretty well and was ready within 15-20 minutes. We ordered the dry fried string beans (which have a little kick), the spicy pork belly bang bang noodles, the sweet Coconut Shrimp and the Cashew Nori Fried Rice. I particularly liked the Coconut Shrimp and Spicy Pork Belly Bang Bang Noodles, those I'd probably order again, there was 3 of us and ordering 4 items seemed like it enough food. I'm not one of those people that thinks all good Chinese food must come from Chinatown. The food seemed well prepared and didn't have the lingering taste of msg. Went here to hang out with friends on a Sunday mid-day and watch football. Food was good. Peter was incredibly friendly. He brought us some mai tais to split and share amongst all of us. He was very helpful with the menu and a few special orders.
