I had the mohinga, pumpkin chicken stew, and Burmese vegetable samusas. Pumpkin chicken stew was AMAZING. I just wish there was more pumpkin. There was like 2 pieces as you can see in the picture.... Samosas were very good. Loved the sauce. Mohinga i thought would have actual catfish in it.... There was nothing. Unless that's shredded so thinly it was floating in the broth. Just thought it would have h chunks of fish. It was okay thought probably wouldn't eat again. Also this was pricy for what you get. 4/5 for skimpy portions.

Excellent find in Oakland! We ordered chicken coconut soup and a tofu stir fry. Both were well made and good portioned. We also ordered a mocktail - pink cassia - it was fizzy and had a delicate rose flavor. Must try while in Temescal area of Oakland. Service was efficient and courteous!

Burma is a great spot for dinner and drinks! [[HIGHLIGHT]]It is cute and quaint inside with limited outside seating.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The service was slow for a Monday, however it was busy! Our first server forgot about us and didn't put in our last order of drinks. After 20 minutes, we finally flagged someone else down who came over and apologized and removed those drinks from our tab. The food was really delicious, and the drinks were very tasty! Overall a decent experience!

I normally come here for dinner, but tried their lunch for the first time and loved it. Usually we would order family style and share lots of meals, but during lunch time they had a lunch menu that came with a smaller portion of entree and side which was perfect! The tea leaf salad and samusa soup was amaaaaazing. The tea leaf salad has lettuce and cabbage tossed in fermented tea leaf dressing and crunchy mix of nuts, tomatoes, and jalapenos. The samusa soup was very hearty with vegetarian samusa, falafel, and fried potato. It was literally a samusa soup that tasted just like a samusa. Highly recommend this vegetarian lunch option. Also, the chili lamb tossed in the wok with onion, rice wine, and thai basil was a lovely entree. It came with a side of ginger salad and coconut rice. You can request regular white rice if you prefer that over the coconut rice, but I thought the sweet coconut rice was perfect with the spicy chili lamb entree!

Came here on a Monday afternoon and it was really empty. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance is really nice, and I could definitely see it being an excellent date spot.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The two of us ordered the Fiery Beef and Spicy Noodles and both I would highly recommend. The Fiery Beef was extremely tender with great flavor, my favorite of the two. Overall, I would rate the food a solid 4.5 stars and along with the ambiance of the restaurant, this is definitely a spot that you should check out!

2nd time here in 3 months. Absolutely, a must visit for Burmese cuisine lovers. Good for vegetarians and the cocktails are unique. Their holiday menu is interesting and there is quite a lot to experience from it. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Nice ambience, location and the staff is cordial.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They were polite enough to let us continue dining while it was way past closing time. Would definitely visit once again when in Oakland.

Where else can you get a tea leaf salad of this quality? The prices are steep, but I strongly feel like that salad is the only food item that carries this 5 star review. The staff are extremely polite and attentive. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance of the restaurant is clean and thoughtful, with a few cultural pieces and warm colors throughout.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Offerings: - Tea Leaf Salad: 10/10, no notes. Okay, some notes for those who have not had one... it is the perfect balance of flavors and textures. Crispy lettuce with crunchy roasted spices, and a savory unctuous fish sauce based dressing. And the fermented tea leaves just provide the perfect texture, flavor, herbaceous addition. I cannot get enough. - Eggplant Red Curry with Chicken: This was a good dish, all the elements were fresh. I felt like the curry could have been a bit bolder, but perhaps I'm used to Indian or Thai curries. - Garlic noodles with Shrimp: again, a basic dish at its core. The red sauce served on the side was the star here. It provided a tangy pop of additional flavor that I was looking for. - Iced Burmese Milk Tea: I really liked this. Good strong tea flavor and I liked the condensed milk in it. Overall, this place is a bit overpriced. But I will still return for the tea leaf salad. Maybe I'll try the Burma Bites down the street instead - same owner, and the salad is $1 cheaper!

Mango Tofu, Coconut Rice, & lychee/dragonfruit cocktail (forget the actual name)

3.5 stars but am feeling generous and rounding up to 4. My friend and I decided to hand an early dinner/drinks at Burma Superstar on New Year's Eve. I made a reservation on Open Table and we were seated immediately. We were told, and I was aware because this was mentioned on OT, that reservations were limited to 90 mins because of the holiday. Not a big deal as we wanted an early dinner to avoid the crowds and chaos that comes with being out late on NYE. We started off with drinks - I had a cocktail with lychee, lime, and dragonfruit and friend had a nonalcoholic mango mocktail. Unfortunately I forget the name but it was pretty and tasty. Almost too pretty to drink, lol! For our entrees, I had the mango tofu and she had the spicy & crispy chicken. We each got an order of coconut rice. The mango tofu was one of the few dishes they said they can't adjust the heat when I asked for mild. My spice tolerance has been growing so I can now handle medium spice. Waiter said the spice ranged from medium to high. At first I was able to handle the spice, especially with the coconut rice. About halfway through the spiciness kicked up and was too spicy for me to handle. Sometimes (like tonight!) I crave spice but then regret it later. However, I was a bit surprised they couldn't adjust the spice. For comparison, Burma 2 in Walnut Creek's mango tofu CAN be customized to mild spice. If B2 can do it, I fail to see why BS can't. Although I didn't try it as I'm pescatarian, my friend said the outside of her chicken was spicy too. As for the service, our waiter was friendly and made good recommendations. However, we waited a LONG time for the check. Having said that, I don't think the delay was his fault and more the restaurant getting busier due to NYE. Splitting the checks and paying by card is easy. Prices are a bit higher compared to Burma 2. Verdict (for future CA trips): -Would come back for sure for drinks, especially during happy hour -wouldn't order the mango tofu but would order other dishes that are/can be made with mild spice. -coconut rice is a great side! Last review of 2025 so happy new year!

Let's just say if this was a talent show everybody would get a 10 and this would be a winner. We went when it was downtime and lunch was ending. One thing I did not like is that they give me a lunch menu with the specials knowing that's already past 230 and I was not able to order. As frustrating that was, I said, forget it and then I got my beverage and let me tell you the gentleman that made it was fantastic. All I said was just make it a little bit sweeter and he made it on point with some loving love. When I ordered it the second time, I literally told the bartender that I would like him to make it because it was fantastic. We ordered the fried calamari as an appetizer and honestly, I was a little bit taken back because many of the pieces were just dough. I even had to break a few of them apart just to make sure I was not crazy! But let me tell you it was still delicious and that sauce that it came when was on point and fire! We ordered the garlic noodles and man let me tell you those were on point. I ordered mine with tofu and my friend ordered hers with chicken and let me tell you great. My partner ordered the fried chicken and it was interesting because the batter that they use is a mixture of flour and cornstarch. That's what makes them so fluffy and delicious . It came topped with a little bit of saffron and it just looked like a beautiful plate. Another thing that bugged me was the charge for just rice. It was interesting because one thing that also got me was seeing everybody that worked there eating at the bar and when my drink was empty, nobody came and filled it. I guess maybe I'm old school and just want service when I go out.

THE BIG: Located in Oakland in the Temescal neighborhood. Indoor and outdoor seating available and beautiful rustic interior. Street parking available. THE BLACK AND WHITE: We came here around 7pm on a Wednesday night and it was popping. Fortunately the wait for walk-ins wasn't too terrible. Seating is a bit tight, but that is what happens for a popular spot. For food, we got the garlic noodles, tea leaf salad, and burmese spicy chicken curry and mango lassi. The favorite was the tea leaf salad, it had so much unique textures and flavors. The other dishes were alright, not as a good as the tea leaf salad but definitely a must is to wash down the meal with a nice tangy mango lassi. THE FINAL BAMBOO: Overall, we spent around $86 on the meal. Highly recommend getting the tea leaf salad.

This Burma superstar is quite different from the location in SF. Their portion is definitely big and enough for even two meals, which is a good plus. We liked all dishes. They are flavorful and delicious. People here are also nice and quick to respond. What I liked the most was the coconut rice. When we asked for boxes, they even packed us some extra coconut rice. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The place is also cute. It's a perfect place for date.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Food: 4/5 Service: 5/5 Ambiance: 4/5 I've always been a loyal fan of Burma Superstar since 2017. I've went to 4 of their sister restaurants. They never fail to satisfy my cravings. Skillet Shrimp: 5/5 DELICIOUS! Would love to order this again. Mango Shrimp: 5/5 SOOO GOOD. Something about cooked mangos, it hits the spot. Salt and Pepper Calamari: 5/5 Calamari is perfectly battered! Flavor was on point. Braise Pork Belly w/ Pickle Mustard Greens: 4/5 There was a little too much dark soy sauce which over powered the dish. Honestly I personally think their sister restaurant Burma Love make it the best. Second would be Burma Superstar in Inner Richmond. Platha & Dip: 4/5 Good but to be honest, I think the Inner Richmond location has the best Platha & Dip. Tea Leaf Salad: 4/5 Good and nutty as always. Salt and Pepper Calamari: 3/5 Chicken was a bit dry but flavorful.

We love the B Star restaurants in The City and have been to the Oakland location once before. We love the food at this restaurant and that we always find something new when we visit. They always have plenty of options for our pescatarian lifestyle. Parking is sometimes an issue here with no designated lot and only street parking. Service was good and food is always very good. Their Tea Leaf salad is a favorite and always our appetizer. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We opted for outdoor seating as they had it pretty cold inside on the day we visited.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We love that they offer brown rice as an option.

Ask the Community - Burma Superstar

Are takeout containers in paper boxes?

It looks like thin brown cardboard with a plastic type liner inside.

    Do you serve halal meat?

Yes, they do have Halal menu items.

Can the tea leaf salad be made vegan and allium-free (no onion, no garlic)?

Hi Liza, our laphet dressing itself is vegan and the salad itself can be made vegan. However, besides the fried garlic we add to the salad that is removal we also add garlic to the dressing so the salad can not be made allium-free.

I almost left you guys a three star review but instead thought I'd ask a question instead. I have a hacked verse, so who knows, but why do you guys not have the most amazing tea leaf salad anymore?

I understood that it was because of supply chain issues and not being able to get the ingredients at affordable prices.

Hello, is the tea leaf salad back in stock?

Yes, but they do sell out...

Are you folks open for indoor seating?

    Yes.

The Roti Dip was OUT OF THIS WORLD (6/5). It exceeded my expectations. The Roti was very soft and crispy and the dip had an amazing coconut/herby taste. The waiter saw how much we loved the dip and brought us another one to use for our rice. Big shout out to her! The chicken wings were okay. Not that spicy for me (I have a high spice tolerance) but I expected them to be more savory. They were cooked very well though. I would give it a 3/5 Unfortunately, I was pretty disappointed with my main which was the crispy whole dried fish. I am a sucker for whole fish dishes so I was pretty excited and expectant for something spectacular. The fish itself was bland. It was very crispy and cooked well but not really seasoned. I had thought the sauce they serve with it was intended to impart flavor on the fish, but the sauce was just very tangy and not flavorful. I did finish the fish though but it's not something I would get again. Overall a 2.5/5. Their coconut rice was good though I was expecting more of a coconut flavor with it. I would rate that a 4/5. It was cooked very well. I think this is a really nice place though, perhaps I just did not order the right or more popular dishes. I'll be coming back for the ROTI WITH DIP (It was that good) and to try the other items in their menu.

I really loved the interior design. Everything was clean and well put together. The restaurant had a smaller, cozy feeling but still felt spacious enough to sit down and enjoy a meal. My favorite parts were the cultural decorations and paintings throughout the restaurant. Little details like that made the experience feel more authentic. Even the cashier area was beautifully designed and added to the overall atmosphere. Customer Service - 5/5 The service was very good. The server was extremely welcoming and friendly -- I believe she might have been the owner. She greeted us with a beautiful smile and created a warm environment that made the whole dining experience even better. Small interactions like that make a restaurant feel more personal and memorable. Food - 5/5 Dish Ordered: Trei Chlaing Chein Kroeung (Pan Fried Catfish) 5/5 My first time trying Cambodian food, and honestly this was an amazing introduction to the cuisine. This was one of the best fish dishes I have ever had. The fish was cooked perfectly -- crispy golden skin on the outside while staying incredibly tender and flavorful on the inside. The sauce was what brought everything together. It was light with the perfect consistency, not too thick and not too heavy. You could taste the lemon coming through, adding the right amount of freshness and kick. There was a little spice, but not the kind that takes over the dish. It created a wonderful balance where every flavor complemented each other. The combination of the fish, sauce, citrus, and seasoning was simple but executed perfectly. Every bite made me want to keep eating. It was honestly delicious. Would I Order Again: 100% Yes. This is easily a dish I would come back for. No surprise this restaurant was previously Michelin recommended -- you can taste the quality and care behind the cooking. Additional Comment: I've always struggled with the idea that eating healthy means sacrificing flavor. A lot of healthier foods like salads can sometimes feel unsatisfying, but this dish reminded me that food can be both healthy and incredibly delicious when done right. I have passed by this restaurant ever since I was young, and it's amazing to see that it's still here after all these years. Seeing a restaurant with food this good not filled with customers honestly feels like a shame. Great food deserves to be discovered, shared, and supported. From the welcoming service, beautiful cultural atmosphere, and unforgettable food, this was an incredible first experience with Cambodian cuisine. I will definitely be back. Despite being quite packed, the servers were attentive for ordering and the food came very quickly. We ordered so many dishes for a great price and everything was packed with flavor. The spicy fish was one of my favorites, and the tom kha was incredibly rich and flavorful. The pork was also super tender. The sampler was probably the standout of the meal; I loved the crispy rice and the cooked sausage in particular. We also tried the angel wings, which were unique. I'd definitely come back to try even more of the menu!

Between the four of us, we shared a variety of dishes, including their Champa Wings, Nam Kaow, Lao Sausages, Yum Nom Tok, Champa's Fried Rice and Pad Thai. Of these dishes, my favorite was easily the Nam Kaow. This dish had so many layers of flavors and textures. I could honestly eat a whole plate of this myself and be satisfied. Every grain of crispy rice was fried to perfection and there was a wonderful sour and spicy tang throughout each bite. The other dish I really enjoyed was the Lao sausages. These sausages are packed with so many different herbs and spices. The lemongrass flavor was especially prominent. Like the Nam Kaow, this dish also went really well with the fresh mint and lettuce that's provided on the table. There's a good reason why this unassuming Thai and Lao neighborhood restaurant has a line out the door: the food is absolutely delicious. Definitely one of my favorite meals I've had in 2026 -- I can't wait to stop by again.

I missed photos of the main entrees enjoying our time and honestly not sure what we ordered as we paid with a kiosk and didn't get a printed receipt even thought I typed in my email.. so that's frustrating with technology. If you want a receipt have it printed before you leave. My friend had a spicy eggplant dish and I had a tofu dish with rice and no fish sauce. Wish I could be more descriptive but can't say without an itemized receipt.. doesn't matter though, was all amazing flavors for both my friend (who travels and has worldly palette, and my self with a broad pallet only within the US) Flavors were amazing and service was on par. I did have an issue at first with the first server saying Pad Thai could be done with tofu and no fish sauce so I was excited, but then the next server said it was already mixed and not able to accommodate, but did find me an alternative I found flavorful with veggies, though missed having the peanuts in my dish. I had Pad See You instead without meat or fish sauce. Service overall was wonderful, attentive and didn't have to wait for anything. They did close and allowed us to stay on the patio visiting long after. Would be happy to return again.. I didn't ask about validating my parking and then they closed, so that was a bummer but my bad.. do check when you arrive and see if they can validate to help with a hefty parking cost $20 for us but hung out longer than most..

We came on a weekday evening, and it was packed! The sound travels here so that it can get really loud and busy. The inside is super casual with seating for large or smaller groups. The service by the staff was good. Our food came out quickly, and everyone was friendly and checked in on us. We ordered the Tom Kha, Nam Khao, Fried Clear Rice Paper Roll Wraps, Pineapple Khao Pad, and Geng Ka Ree. Everything was fabulous! Lots of great flavors and spices. The portion sizes were spot on. My favorite was the Nam Khao and the Fried Clear Rice Paper Roll Wraps. I love the bite-sized and sharing family-style. My companion and family also enjoyed it. If you like Laotian food, Bhan Mae Vane is a must-try in the East Bay! Find them off Webster Street with street and neighborhood parking. I look forward to going back!

Do you like the funk?…read more Our server explained to us the Lao version is more funky and fermented, while the Thai version is more mellow. We went with the Lao version. The Thai iced coffee was delicious and strong! As it should be. It did give me the jitters though because I'm a weak sauce. We were a party of ten and I was able to make rezzies via phone for a Friday evening at 6:30pm no problem about a week beforehand. The kiddos ordered à la carte, and five of us adults had the following: - BMV ultimate papaya platter with Lao sausage, angel wings and crispy pork. Crispy pork was legit, papaya salad definitely had that extra funk. The angel wings were crispy and meaty and my friends loved the Lao sausage. One even said "it's like tom yum soup in a sausage". It was very lemongrass forward which is not my thing, but that's my problem. I feel we could have ordered à la carte and that would have been a better deal than $75 for the platter. Some of it was fluff like the cabbage, rice and pork rinds. - Khao soy soup: Fiancé thought it would be creamy and coconut-y like the Thai version but it wasn't. I did enjoy the flat noodles but they were all stuck together. - Pia pla ka pow (fish with basil): Good one. The fish was moist and flavorful. The veggies were al dente and delicious too. - Sakoo: Unique! I enjoyed the chewy mochi exterior and the savory ground pork filling. It needed a sauce. I just used the chili sauce that was on the party platter. - Laab Gai: This fell flat for me. I'm not a huge fan of organs though. - Nam khao fried rice: One of our favorites! The crispy pieces really made this dish. Would definitely order this again. - Mango sticky rice: Served warm. Very sweet mango! - Purple rice with egg custard: Also served warm. This was ok. - Side of rice: HUGE serving! Unfortunately it was clumpy and hard, which means old. Street parking only. Get the nam khao and mango sticky rice!

They've also made it to the Michelin Bib Gourmand list several years in a row, so you know the food is going to be legit! They don't accept reservations, so getting there and hoping for a table is your best bet. We were a group of 5, and after about a 20 min wait (pretty much par-for-the-course for a Saturday night), we were seated. They do have tables outside, but we were told that we couldn't start our meal outside and then move to a table indoors after one was available, so we waited. Oh well! As we waited, we noticed a steady stream of online orders, indicating this is a popular place with those in the neighborhood. We got a few beers while we waited for a table. They also have Thai iced teas/coffee/lemonade, and serve young coconuts with water. We got a bunch of appetizers to share and some entrees. We got the crispy rice pork salad, this is served with lettuce leaves and herbs and a wedge of lime. I loved this dish - the crispy rice and ground pork combination was balanced and the squeeze of lime juice made for a perfect bite wrapped in a lettuce leaf with mint and cilantro. Next was the Bird & Buffalo Chicken wings, perfectly crispy and tossed in salt and pepper. Good for folks who don't enjoy the spice. We also got the grilled pork spare ribs to share, which folks enjoyed. For entrees we had the drunken noodles with pork, green curry with rice and massaman curry with rice. I could have done with a spicier version of the green curry, but it was flavorful and satisfying. Overall, a solid spot for Thai food - we will be back to sample some of their other dishes too!
