The most beneficial experience I've ever had was when I recently visited Tennis String Theory. Ivy Smith was cordial, patient and knowledgeable when advising me on the right racquet and string to best fit my game. When I informed her I was a 4.5 player, she convinced me to replace my Babolat racquet with the Wilson Blade 100, while recommending a multi-filament string to protect my tennis elbow. My two new Blades were strung and ready within 24 hours, and the combination has proven to be the perfect fit for me. When I was trying out a Blade demo in the ball hitting area (only shop I've seen that has this) I also had pleasure of observing Ivy interact with other patrons. I went to the store on a whim because I want to get back into tennis. Ivy is a tennis angel. I didn't want to spend a lot on a new racket and she helped me find a great value in a consignment. She let me test all the strokes it in the store until I felt comfortable buying it. She then changed the grip to fit me and added tape to cover scratches. It looks new and is a high quality racket. Ivy also spent so much time with me to try to find shoes that fit my wide feet. She generously told me which model came in wide and didn't pressure me to buy through her. She gave me water and candy and told me about all the tennis resources in the area to try to find partners and courts. She is a lovely person who loves the sport and encouraged me. This is a great small bossiness to support in Northern Virginia. read more

My wife wanted to get me a gift for by upcoming birthday on the 20th. I said that I needed a new tennis racquet. A tennis buddy recommended Tennis String Theory. I planned to visit the Falls Church store, but before I went, I called to see what I could learn. I had a call with a knowledgeable woman on the phone that made me feel comfortable driving over. Once there, I was won over by the other two members of the staff. The GM is a tennis coach and we discussed tips to improve my serve. We looked at my current racquet, which I had wisely brought with me, and what options might work for me. They had one and let me try a house model in their netted hitting area. It worked. They had me. Then we discussed the strings and the overwrap, including the color. On top of that, they had it ready to go after I took a lunch break nearby at the fabulous Lazy Mike's Deli (Pro tip - get the Classic Reuben). I can't wait to use it this weekend. This was a great experience. It was far better than just going online to get the sale item, with no help to assess what racquet or strings to get. As well, after that personal service, that store deserved the sale, whether or not I could find the same items for less online. We need places to interact with experts and a place that will encourage more people to play. I've loved it since I was ten years old and I hope to keep on doing so for as long as possible. read more

Went there today with my boyfriend, who is also a beginner as I am. We knew little about tennis rackets and honestly any other things about tennis. For us, we just want rackets that fit us well (lighter/heavier, length, etc) and use them to exercise and have some fun. The owner gave us very helpful suggestions. We ended up getting two used ones and we are extremely happy with these. He changed the grip tapes for us for free. We talked about tennis and other random stuff with him. A very nice guy! This store is definitely a hidden gem for people who want to buy nice but cheaper tennis rackets, like us. But don't expect to buy other kinds of tennis supplies there, like shoes or shorts. Hard to find shop, located on the 2nd level of a small office complex in Falls Church. It's actually located next to the McDonald's in the white office building, second level. Don't let the small sized shop fool you. I am glad I found it.. The owner answered all my questions, and did an expert stringing on my racket within 2 hours. The shop carries beginner to hi-end tennis rackets, shoes, and accessories. I also saw a good selection of badminton rackets and balls. The owner took the time to explain the nuisances of each brand, and helped me select a good synthetic string as well. Good thing about this place was the installation was free, which is rare.. usually you buy the string + install fee. I also purchased a new racket on the same visit and got a great deal. I would definitely recommend this place to tennis players in the area looking a good selection and good prices. read more

Bert Jose does a fantastic job restringing my racquetball rackets. He really knows what he's doing and I hear he's good with tennis and squash rackets to. It's a hard to find a place on the second floor of the international center off Carlin Springs Road. You have to go up a flight of stairs and you think that you're in the wrong place and then you turn the corner and there's Bert's shop. It's jampacked with just about everything. This place is kind of hard to find the first time and the overall building and tenancy is quite unique .... the overall feel on the 2nd level feels like a middle-eastern bazaar. In the midst of this is Bert's little tennis bodega if you will (ok, mixed metaphor). I had two racquets re-strung professionally at a competitive price. This shop is located in a small room on the second floor of an office building near Bailey's Crossroads. As you can see from the pictures, the place is a bit of a mess. The selection is OK, but rackets are all over the floor, on tables and piled up on the floor, so you need to tip-toe around to avoid the merchandise. As to the prices, they're about the same as other shops. Don't expect any great deals. Full disclosure, I had a very bad experience with Tennis and Fitness Sports. I took out some rackets to demo and left a deposit as a credit towards a racket (this is standard practice at tennis shops). When I came to redeem the deposit, he asked for a receipt and claimed to have no record of my deposit (isn't that what computers are for?). I don't know if he was ripping me off or just incompetent, but it amounts to the same thing. All in all, you're better off going to a professional tennis shop. read more

I didn't purchase my racket here but was very pleased with the stringing. After the tennis factory in Arlington closed I was left without a tennis shop. The owner here was awesome to work with. He picked up my call on a Sunday and told me to use his drop box. This place is a mess! But it's a good place to find new rackets, used ones or put your old ones up for consignment. Not a place to look for shoes or tennis wear. But the true value of this shop is that on weekdays, you can have your rackets strung in half a day. Heck, if you probably eat a buffet lunch and he's not doing anything, he'll be finished by then. I've had my rackets and those of my varsity team kids' rackets strung up here for years and he always gets the tension right. He is also popular for doing hybrid stringing, using 2 different strings for the vertical and crosses. Not sure about the demo policy as I never tried it out.. Warning, think almost hoarder proportions as there is hardly any space to walk around and you'll see all kinds of knick-knacks, DVDs, a samurai sword and vintage stuff for sale. Beside Toys R Us along Leesburg Pike. Look for the McDonalds, behind it is Just Tires, and it is on the second level of a building that sells Middle Eastern stuff. read more

this place is a real gem and my tennis store from now on. the first time i went there i complained that a pair of tennis shoes i bought from a sports authority fell apart after playing hard a couple of times - the top just ripped. bert explained that those "sports" shoes are meant more for fashion than function. he sold me a real pair of solid Head tennis shoes - they are great. his selection of rackets is fantastic and i rented a few to try out and ended up buying a Head racket from Bert.
