A quick search showed numerous joints so I picked one close with a high Google rating - Taqueria Rancho El Milagro. I missed the turn and drove by this place the first time because it's disguised as a used car shop. Well, rather, it shares a building and lot with a used car shop, and I was a bit worried as I parked the car. Walking in revealed a surprise -- a casual and cozy interior with no hint of what automotive mayhem might be happening on the other side of the kitchen wall. The menu was bilingual and there was a board with the daily specials of the week. Thursday is costillo de puerco en salsa verde -- pork ribs in green sauce. I didn't see the sign before ordering, but even if I had, I wanted tacos. My one complaint is that all the prices on the boards are taped over. They must be redoing the pricing. I asked the woman behind the register and she confirmed the taco price: $3.75 each. I ordered 1 carne asada and 1 al pastor. The order took some time, but I could hear the sound of metal spatulas clanging against the griddle as the meat was being cooked. The tacos arrived unadorned. But that's what the salsa bar is for! It had a wide variety of accoutrements including cilantro, pico de gallo, white onions, cucumbers, red radishes, 3 salsas, and some type of escabeche. After garnishing my tacos, I took a closer look. Instead of the standard two (or even one, at some lesser establishments) corn tortillas pulled from a steamer, these tacos came with an obviously handmade one of slightly thicker stock. It was light, soft, and a bit fragile, but it did a fine job -- a welcome change from the standard pre-made ones. The flavor on each of the tacos was great. A bit salty, but with the right garnish and a little lime juice to cut in, they ended up delicious. I didn't order a drink, but they did have a selection of 3 aguas frescas which I'll probably order the next time I'm back. I'll have to find a reason to drive out to Bristow again, and it might be a Tuesday to get my fix for multiple $2.00 Taco Tuesday tacos al pastor.

Guatemalan Chicken Tamal - This has to be one of the best tamals I have ever had! I am used to the Mexican tamales that are on the dryer side, but their tamal masa was gelatinous almost like a custard, and there were big pieces of chicken meat inside. And the plus side is that the chicken was 99% meat and 1% fat! They did not skimp on the meat in this one. Chicken Pupusa - I am used to greasy pupusas, but their pupusa was significantly less greasy, and that is a HUGE plus. Also, these pupusas were less than $5.00 each and came with a huge side of cabbage. The cheese-to-meat ratio inside was also pretty decent; I would say 60% cheese, 40% meat. My husband absolutely loved all the pupusas he ordered and even bought some to take home to our family. We were served by one of the owners who was very sweet and spoke to my husband in Spanish and me in English; this means a lot to me because in other places, I tend to be ignored while they speak Spanish to just my husband. When we are back in Virginia, this will be one of our go-to spots for Salvadorean food. We are used to pupusas being over $5, but these pupusas were less greasy AND much more affordable.

My only small suggestion would be to serve the syrup warm. The French toast was good, but the syrup was a little chilly, and warm syrup would have made it even better. The drinks were great A person in my party ordered a hotdog with taco meat and cheese, it came with no cheese and by the time she was able to get cheese, the hotdog was cold. A person in my party ordered a beef taco. The taco arrived with a cold taco shell like it came out of a box. It wasn't heated or anything. I ordered a spinach and cheese enchilada with no cheese and extra vegetables. I got two corn tortillas wrapped around some onions and peppers. No spinach, The last person on our party ordered a cheese quesadilla. There was too much cheese, not suffi efficiently melted. We ordered a bean dip appetizer and it came with one spoon and the waitress asked if we wanted extra spoons, but did not offer any plates to put the bean dip on. It was kind of funny that she just asked us if we wanted extra spoons. The bean dip did not come with tortilla chips. I guess you were just supposed to eat it with a spoon.
