He took 3 years worth of tax returns and prepared them within a week - and they weren't easy. Not only that, he filed everything longways - meaning filling out extra forms to take advantage of every write-off and tax break possible. I believe he wants to do right by his customers, but... when it all comes down to it he really only wants customers who are willing to pay premium pricing for average (at best) services. THE BAD - For me, his kindness ended when I simply asked him why he charges almost twice as much ($500 for my personal taxes compared to someone else who charged me $300 last year) as other CPA's when he is doing the same calculations for your taxes. After spending an hour and a half discussing my tax history with Albert, I finally asked about pricing. This is when he told me about his high prices. So I let him know that for the sake of time I would be willing to pay him to do my taxes this year, but at that price I would likely not continue to use him year after year. To my surprise, he got defensive at this point and let me know that I should probably find someone else to do my taxes because it "wouldn't be worth his time" to do my taxes for one year. What good business person turns down easy money when you have already done half the work? THE SILVER LINING - Although this guy completely wasted my time, I'm happy he showed his true colors. I have plans to purchase a franchise or start a business in the near future in addition to potentially investing in real estate. I would hate to work with someone who feels they are "too good" to work with me on my simple taxes when I know my taxes will become more complex in time. He used to be a personal finance radio talk show host, which he let me know right off the bat. He spoke with me for less than ten minutes total on the topic for which I'd sought advice. Mostly he went on and on (and on) for an hour with canned, high school-level personal finance bromides irrelevant to my situation, interspersed with lots of unrelated chitchat. I kept trying to drag the conversation back to what I'd come for, but it was all about him, the former star of radio and college football. (I know, I shoulda excused myself and left, but was trying to be polite.) In the end, he said I owed him 200 bucks for his wise counsel, and suggested that I do business with a friend/family member of his who does mortgages. Conflict of interest, ya think? Man of my word (or sucker), I paid his fee. Bottom line: He's okay at income taxes. And if you want the experience of being on a personal finance a.m. radio talk show, Ed's your man. But if you want succinct, professional financial advice applicable to your situation, you might want to take your business elsewhere.
