I used to come here quite often but over the years, they seem to have less and less selection and often times the plants look sad or are rootbound even.And their prices have gone up and up... Sometimes when I go, it is nearly empty- hardly any plants- and I am talking about during prime planting time like Spring and Fall. There is hardly anyone ever shopping now too. The staff also seems less than thrilled to be there and some act like you are bothering them when you go to check out even when they aren't busy. Sorry to bother them while they are looking on their phones but I'm trying to check out! It has become a sort of depressing place to go now so I don't plan to be back. To Dan E., Owner, Almost 30 days after my first review, I have had nothing but frustrating failure in my raised beds with Terra Gardens Premium soil. My tomatoes are ripening but the plants have only grown a few inches, and they are pathetic. Zucchini are yellow and not growing - no fruit. Cukes are yellow and growing VERY slow - no fruit. Carrots never grew over 2 inches. Green onions died at 2 inches. Radishes died at 1 inch. Had a soil sample tested and learned there is a HUGE lack of NITROGEN in this "premium" soil. The optimal range for Nitrogen is 32.0-60.0 - the soil test showed the Nitrogen at 2.85!!!!! There is no way to correct this problem by top or side dressing, it's too extreme. Potassium should be between 38.0-80.0 - soil test showed Potassium at 190.98!! Very very high! No wonder my plants are dying! How can I correct that? Sulfur amount should be 7.0-22.0 - soil test showed Sulfur at 3.81. Another reason my plants are dying. Consequently, my garden this year is a failure thanks to Terra Gardens. I am beyond sad at this point because there is nothing I can do. As a disabled veteran, I had to pay people to buy, haul, and fill my raised beds with this plant killing soil. Now I have to pay people to remove the soil, get a better product, and fill the raised beds for next year. I sure hope Terra Gardens is willing to help me in this frustrating situation. read more

It's a nursery. So, you know, there's that. But it's good. My partner wanted to get a new pot to transplant a spider plant that's growing like crazy. My partner has a brown/black thumb when it comes to plants, so she was super thrilled that she actually got one to live and thrive. We had checked out another nursey, which generally we love going to because the grounds are nice and they have a huge selection, but their pottery wasn't quite what we were looking for. At Terra Gardens, we found the same pottery as the other location, but also plenty of other styles. And, we noted, the prices were significantly less at Terra Gardens. My partner found a pot that she fell in love with. We wandered with our children some, but I don't think we hit half of the location. We were running errands all over that day, but we look forward to coming back and seeing what else is here. Especially now that my partner is more and more interested in taking up gardening and planting. read more

I'm happy to have found Terra after a random search for mulch/bark dust in Salem. Looks like they might be doing some renovation or construction. So it's a bit confusing to know where to go - I stopped into the temporary trailer up front to inquire about inventory. Paid there, then pulled around to the back to load up. Six huge bags of red fir bark came out to about $45 which, coming from Portland's expensive city nurseries, felt like a GREAT deal. I plan to go back for more bark and to browse their plant selection so I'll check prices on other items too. Oh, also, I didn't have to load a single bag, so I appreciate the staff's help! read more

What didn't I like? I've been coming here since before the remodel when it was smaller and it had a smaller selection. It was great then. Now that they've remodeled, it is even better. It's gorgeous. Well built, organized, with a great selection of landscaping materials, indoor houseplants, yard plants, flowers, vegetables and herbs. You have got to come check it out. Every person who works here is kind and friendly, truly. The staff really make you feel welcome and are always smiling. I never feel like I'm imposing. As a customer of many years, I visited Terra Gardens today to view their new and so much more improved venue. Two of the gentlemen were just over the top friendly and made me feel right back at home. That stopped when I approached one of the cash registers. One young lady beckoned me over, but I first had to attempt to push a large plastic bag with contents out of the way when she finally deigned to assist. There was no "hello"or "how are you". After she had rung up my purchase, I presented the Terra Gardens card I had received in the mail which was to give a $10 discount. Rather miffed, she stated I should have presented that coupon before my purchase. Excuse me? Whenever I shop and have coupons they are presented at the end of a transaction! Perhaps this young woman never shops or does not know about coupons. She reversed my charge on my card and then redid it, with anything but a pleasant attitude. Sixteen reviews that aren't recommended are all four and five stars---these folks can't get a break! I've been dealing with Terra for seventeen years, landscaping a lot that's close to half an acre. My home is over a bridge of indeterminate capacity, so I've had them send their bobtail truck to deliver five yards of bark or compost innumerable times, and they show up on time and drop it right where I want it. I've also had a full truckload blown over my ornamentals, and it was done with skill. The bulk delivery counter staff have invariably been attentive, efficient and civil. As reported by others, the counter staff in the plant building are definitely hit or miss, and I too have left w'out purchasing because I was disgusted. Out in the yard, Mick and another chap whose name I don't know are proactive and very knowledgeable. Dan, the owner, connected me up with very fine casual labor, to help plant some huge trees I couldn't handle alone. I purchase mostly shrubs and trees, and have experienced a great deal of rootbound stock, but this is true of ALL retail nurseries. This goes with the territory and I scarcely know what to advise consumers, other than to engage professional landscapers for big jobs, people who know how to obtain balled and burlapped stock, or whatever it takes to assure thrifty growth. The selection of species and cultivars can be quite extensive---it ebbs and flows---and this spring they beat out Garland for the things I needed, which is saying something. read more

I enjoy shopping here; however, recently I picked up a bag of their bonsai soil. There soil is certainly NOT traditional bonsai soil. The particle size was very small and did not drain well. I sifted the entire 2.5 gallon bag and came up with enough soil to repot two of my small pines. I was in a pinch because I could not get down to Corvallis to my normal supplier and thought, "what the heck, I might as well try the local stores soil and save a couple hours of driving and shopping." Unfortunately now I will find myself driving down to Corvallis since I have another 5 trees to replant. If you are looking for something other than bonsai soil, they do have a wide selection of items. read more

Love this place! I wish I could remember names but the guys that work there are so helpful and really know what they are talking about. I have been coming here for years and they have helped me with so many projects. This place always goes above and beyond every time. I think they ever so slightly overpriced on pottery but hey they probably can't buy it in the quantities the the huge stores do therefore not get the huge break. I would highly recommend plant bucks like do at Woodburn Al's nursery! I spend around 5k a year at Al's because of that program, while Terra only does a 3% discount, causing me to maybe spend around 200-500 there. I try the very best balance of maintaining plants, watering, fertilizing And pruning while trying to have my crew keep a close eye out for Customers headed toward cash register. We all are dedicated to the best Customer Service that can be provided and all employees do their very best to provide help with all your needs and requests. I often run the register personally because sometimes you need a Cashier more than you need a Manager. Terra Gardens is a joke!! I have spent thousands of dollars there on soil, bark, and plants. I recently bought their "organic mulch" as a top dressing for flower beds as stated on the website that it's used for. After it was all spread I noticed as soon at it rained there was tons of plastic and garbage that came to the surface. I called at talked with the manager Tammy. She admitted that they have had issues with this product and the garbage in it. She said sorry nothing I can do. Totally unexceptionable! Will take our business somewhere else. read more

The cashier service in this place is a joke. You have to go track down a worker to get through the cashier area. Today was the last straw. I wanted some soil mix, waited at the counter for 15 minutes, was never greated, never heard a "welcome" "we will be with you shortly" I was simply ignored, period. We bought 10 trees in January in anticipation of planting them at our new property in the Spring. They were well cared for, protected, and 9 of them leafed out. It was obvious that we had been sold a dead tree. We contacted them and spent a week going back and forth with upper management. My mom took on the charge, having worked in the floral and nursery business for over 30 years. The owner finally agreed to give us a gift certificate for the amount of purchase if and only if we brought in the dead tree. We did so and the manager refused to uphold the agreement we made with the owner and when we asked to speak with the owner, he said, "The owner backs me up." My mom flat out asked the manager if policy was more important than customers and if they were willing to lose loyal customers and their reputation over what would amount to less than $30 out of pocket". The manager actually said, "Yes." It was one of the worst customer service experiences that I have had. I will never do business with them again, neither will my extended family, neither will several other businesses that my mom is affiliated with. read more
