Paris has these unique passageways that cut through the buildings. It would be easy to miss them entirely or think they were just a dead end to a few shops, but actually the passageway allows you to walk from one side of a city block to another by cutting through the buildings without dealing with vehicle traffic. There are shops and restaurants along both sides. It is pedestrian traffic only and there is a roof. They actually remind me a bit of the Grand Bazaar souk in Istanbul, Turkey. Anyways, along one of these passageways, you will stumble upon the Bar de Varieties. My nephew who lives in Paris invited my niece and I for dinner here, so we let Google maps lead the way. The food is reasonably priced and there are plenty of delicious, French options on the menu like escargots and boeuf bourguignon. The three of us chose "la formule" which allowed us to each choose an appetizer, main dish and dessert. When traveling, getting fruits and vegetables in the diet can be somewhat hard, so I opted for the Caprese salad. The tuna steak cooked medium rare was the special of the day. A small tiramisu in a cup completed my meal. It was light and right for the brutal hot days we had been enduring, and didn't weigh me down as we pounded the pavement for several more miles of sightseeing. Staff was very accommodating. We arrived before they opened, but they allowed us to take a seat while they prepared for dinner. Carafes of water were always full and drinks were replenished quickly. Best part was the price. This restaurant earns an extra full star for its low prices in the normally pricey Paris. Impressive. Located at the Panoramas Passage, Terroir & Burger - Bar des Variétés is so hidden that its sign outside reads "12 Buffet Bar 12". To say it's a hidden gem is an understatement. We were so surprised to see a 3 course meal at €18.90 or a 2 course meal at €15.90. What? Am I in Paris? The place calls itself homestyle, and the food has a simplicity without fancy plating but is very tasty. Starters: Escargot, French Onion Soup - The soup is not pretty, without a baked gruyere top, but the flavor is tasty. The escargot also has a simple tastiness, plenty of butter, parsley. I could use more garlic though. Main courses: Bœuf Bourguignon and duck breast with honey sauce - I think these two are the stars of the trio. Flavors, quality of ingredients, and quantity of food are all spectacular. The duck in particular was YUM! I even liked the roasted potatoes, which are savory, flavorful potato wedges. Desserts: Crème Brulee and chocolate mousse. It's been a while since I've had chocolate mousse that I really like - not so creamy, not too thick, plenty of chocolatey goodness. Crème Brulee has a balanced creamy flavor. Eat here! You'll enjoy the food and the deco. The server speaks very good English too. read more

Although there are many cafes and restaurants around Paris, it is difficult to eat on a budget...what drew my friends and I to this place was the affordability. With plates at about 15 euros average, we were glad to find this place tucked into the little alley. Although it was busy and service wasn't too fast, the waiter was kind and accommodating to our lack of French knowledge. I ended up getting the entrecote, which is a rib steak - it was delish. Nice and tender, I enjoyed it with the small salad and potatoes on the side. We did see the burgers go by, which also looked tasty, but I was quite happy with my dish, and would come again! read more

This place is down a very lively alley. A very unassuming place that looks like a hole-in-the-wall bar BUT worth a visit. The two gentlemen working were polite and fit the place perfectly. The ambiance was appropriate with light accordion music playing in the background and wasn't over powering. The presentation of the food was nothing special but that's bc they put their effort into where it counted ... Selection of products and preparation. The food was delicious and was the most normally priced meal we've had in Paris over the past 5 days we've been here. Definitely give it a try! Firstly, there is wheelchair access to the outside seating but being in a covered small passage it is not cold to sit outside. A wheelchair user could independently get over the small step (approx) 5-7 cm but inside, the restaurant is quite small. Both doors need to be open to fit inside and in winter often only one door is open. Having said that, that's my personal preference not to want small restaurant spaces. I still eat here at least every couple of weeks simply because it's in an beautiful passage off the street, the food is tasty and well priced and the staff are very helpful and happy to correct my French. The burgers are lovely except I'm not a fan of brioche burgers buns. I prefer a squishy bun! The blue cheese burger was very cheesy which I loved. I think the foie gras burger needed a sauce of some sort on it (not tomato sauce or mayonnaise though). read more

A Google translation of a French Yelp review made me think the burger au foie gras had the foie in the middle of the burger, but unfortunately that was not the case. Either way the foie was cooked beautifully, the rare beef burger was perfect, and the bun was really delicious. Also the salad with three kinds of cheese was a great way to start but so glad we decided it share it, it was quite large. The area around the place was really fun to discover, that alone made it worth the experience. If we had been hungrier I am sure we would have had desert at another of the places nearby or perhaps some more drinks at a bar down the way. Not the best meal you will have in Paris, but really great for where and what it was and quite reasonably priced. The French couple next to us seemed to agree and were very friendly and conversational. The staff did not seem to speak much English, but that was not a problem at all since the menu and the setup was so straightforward. I highly recommend this place to anyone from the US travelling with children or if you just want something both French and yet simple and almost familiar. I didn't feel guilty eating in a burger joint in Paris, in fact I would probably go again on my next visit if there weren't so many more places to try... read more

Found this gem through Yelp. Almost missed it as the sign didn't show "Terroir & Burger" but "12 Bar de Varieties". They have English menu & servers speak very good English. You can find burgers with a lot of cheese varieties, e.g. camembert, blue cheese, etc. I ordered camembert burger and what surprised me the most was they actually mixed the cheese with the beef patty and not just put the cheese on top of the beef. It melts in your mouth in each bite! For the dessert, try the fountain chocolate with vanilla sauce, perfect balance of taste! Thanks Yelp for showing me this hidden gem!!! read more

We enjoyed a dinner here our first night in Paris, while at first it seemed odd to have a burger in Paris but the choices were quite unique. I enjoyed a duck burger which consisted of chunks of tender duck with grilled onions and a delicious balsamic sauce all with potatoes and a cheese sauce. Stopped here for lunch while exploring the canal markets in Paris. It looks like a hole in the wall place and was very accommodating to our group. They serve a nice set menu for 12-15 euro of traditional french food. The escargot and french onion soup had good flavors. The duck breast with honey was a little overcooked but still very delicious. The beef tartare was well flavored with mustard and spices, and there is a version with blue cheese in it which is an interesting combination. With a bottle of wine, lunch was under 100 euro for 4 people, and we splurged. TLDR: Nice casual restaurant serving good traditional food in a unique location in the roofed canals of Paris. Dive bar. Service wasn't very fast. Came here for Sunday night dinner. Apparently there aren't that many cheap eats in the Opera area open on Sunday nights. I ordered the risotto and was disappointed that the sauce came out looking separated - cream separated from the oil. A real treasure of a restaurant. This place is where you can get the BEST French burger that I have yet to try in Paris. Their standard burger is already amazing - but then get the cheeseburger with cantal or better yet the burger with duck breast on top..... Awesome. I have yest to try the fois gras burger, but it's time will come. The buns are custom designed for the place by a nearby boulangerie and they are toasty, warm, and flurry. Plus the potatoes and the cheesy sauce you dip them in top of the whole experience. The French touch here is strong and it is what makes the place a must. In addition to great burgers, this place captures the real Paris feel for me and the atmosphere gives this little hole in the wall cafe nothing but bonus points. First, it is in a super cute covered pedestrian passageway - hidden away among little shops and other restaurants - and not at all a commercial feel (which is hard to find on the Grands Boulevards). Then when you arrive, you find the place and inside you have a long bar, with little intimate tables around it and an additional space on the first floor for groups if necessary. An additional positive point is that the kitchen is removed from the dinning room and while watching the cook prepare your food can seem cool when you arrive, when you leave smelling like lard this is less appealing. The staff is very nice, respectful, and are happy to talk if you want to ask questions about the place or the food. (Yes nice waiters can be found in authentic places in Paris - on occasion). If you are French and you are looking for a restaurant that will make you believe you have been teleported to a hip, authentic, American burger joint, this is not your place. This also applies for all those homesick Americans looking to eat a burger and fries that will make them miss their folks a bit less (and for this problem I recommend Blend - see my review). Plus, it's not expensive at all and the restaurant has great prices for their "menus" (appetizer + main or main + dessert) are very reasonable for the area at 15.90 euros (or 18.90 for all three). I am going to give this place 4 stars. But the burger deserves 5! The reason why I hold back is that I am a little disappointed with the desserts. Given the quality of the burgers - they could do better! (Neither the cheesecake nor the fondant au chocolate were up to par for my standards). read more

Great wine list at very reasonable prices and a well priced, well chosen menu. The Camembert burger was amazing. We didn't feel rushed or pushed out and the ambience made for a relaxing visit. We went to this place after a quick Yelp/TripAdvisor search of restaurants in the neighborhood where we were staying in Paris. The fantastic reviews were accurate! We loved this place - there was absolutely no flack given to us for our poor French speaking and need for an English menu. The server recommended Boeuf Bourgogne, so that's what I had. Had lunch here and got a table quickly upstairs. He had the burger medium rare and I had the beef carpaccio. His burger was juicy and came with fries. My carpaccio came with a salad and fries. They were good but not great. Some of the fries were extra crispy, some were under cooked. The carpaccio had a good bit of oil and pesto on it, was a bit hard to taste the beef. read more

We visited this restaurant twice while here in Paris. The beef bourguignon was amazing...melt in your mouth. The blue cheese burger was very good...you must make sure to tell them you want it medium otherwise it will come out rare. The potatoes that accompanied the burger are like homemade fried potatoes...by themselves they are worth the visit. A great variety of burgers and very affordable. Coming out from the theater, we were reluctant to go for a burger in Paris, but given the reviews we decided to give it a try. It was unbelievably delicious, I have to admit it was probably the best burger I ever had (my top one being the Spotted Pig's in NYC). The service was fast and the food was prepared quickly! The house potatoes are perfectly cooked and served with Roquefort, so good! I chose to have my burger medium, but I could have easily gone medium rare as the quality of the meat was nice! I had the burger provençal with sun dried tomato, roasted eggplant, goat cheese and grilled onions... And my only complaint was my bun could have been a bit softer! The best meal that we have had in Paris, including some at a higher price point. We actually happened upon this place while trying to go to a wine bar that was closed. I opted for the 2 course meal while hubby did the 3 course. We actually didn't even have the burgers and would still rate at 5 stars. Both had French onion soup - the best we've ever had, large portions and the bread in the soup was a seasoned crouton of sorts. For the main course we each had duck, but prepared differently. Hubby had a savory duck confit with salade and roasted potatoes, which was excellent. I had duck medallions in a honey sauce, also with salad and roasted potatoes. So so delicious!!! Paired with a bottle of house Chardonnay at a reasonable price it was perfection. For dessert hubby had "tiramisu citron" which was actually closer to a key lime pie mousse. Still very very good, just not what Americans would expect for tiramisu - they do have the coffee flavor, and our waitress did let us know that it was citrus when we ordered. They must have been out of the coffee version. All in all, as I said - best meal! Also, atmosphere in one of the historic galleries of the 2nd arrondissement is a great experience.
