I just want to clarify that my oil was changed once when the correct fuel pump was installed. Nobody at your shop addressed any of my requests for a compression test, gentlemen's warranty on the affected engine parts, or a second oil change, which is one of the primary reasons I've moved on from your business. The time to make this right was when it happened, not when you found the negative review on Yelp two months later. Your staff and service techs are helpful and kind, and like I said, this was a big but honest mistake. The reason I am moving on doesn't rest on any one person's shoulders. It's how the whole thing was handled. Being nice doesn't make this right. That's the bare minimum any customer should expect from a business they spend thousands of dollars with. Over a dozen years, I've probably spent close to what I paid for this truck there because it's turned out to be a bit of a beater. I was really surprised no one caught the fuel in the oil. I smelled it as soon as I realized my engine was overpressurizing and I pulled the dipstick out to check. I'm surprised no one sat with a fuel gauge on for 5 mins after shutoff because that's all it took for me to realize it was overpressurized and not underpressurized like we'd originally thought. I am also really surprised that over the course of a year, no one went back to the original repair when the issue started. I figured this out and I'm a dude who knows jack about fuel pumps. IMO, the first step should've been confirming the right pump was put on and that it was working correctly. I would've assumed that was part of the troubleshooting, but it obviously wasn't. I wish no ill will toward your business and I hope my experience causes a review of your troubleshooting and customer experience procedures. You could've done more to right this wrong. You guys were really good to me for a lot of years, and I want to explicitly say thanks to Mike and Evan for putting up with me and my stubbornness. They're both solid dudes. I see my issue as a systemic issue with the way the business operates, and I have confidence you'll figure this out and improve it. I hope Terry's thrives in the coming years! Interesting that the reviews on Yelp are mixed and the reviews on Terry's Automotive Group is different; apparently TAG edits and omits reviews. The amended review apparently is not posted yet, so it's hard to speak to it. Terry's, back in the 1970s and 1980s and a bit more, had a proud certificate from AAA, which is no longer there. It's sad to see the business may have gone so publicly downhill after Terry and Kyle were no longer in charge. However, judging merely by the reviews, the business may well have improved drastically since my last visit, for many people speak of them as trustworthy and honest, something that was certainly true in the way-back-when times, but was not true in the earliest 2000s when I had such bad experiences and evident incompetence. I hope this improvement is able to continue, for my memories of the earliest days (the business had been opened significantly under a year when I first became a customer) were excellent. read more

Their service is top tier, the price reflects the work, and they don't feed you lies. They're not trying to up charge you, or offer repairs you don't need. Extremely transparent. Professional. There is a business that repairs flats for free, so I took my flat in to be fixed, intending to buy new tires if needed. After being told that a rim was bent and I needed to buy all new, plus tires (!), I left feeling suspicious. Terry's checked out my car and it's fine. A family member had been a long time customer. Then her truck was stolen. Our family bought her a different car that was a 1988 year model. Terry's told her they don't work on anything that old. I sent an email on their website but they did not respond. So, I called. Was put on hold and then disconnected several minutes later. They did not return my call or answer our email. Like I said, a customer for many years, gets down on her luck, family that lives 100 miles away tries to help by buying her an older car. Terry's says, "No, your car is too old". Their staff has always been competent in their endeavor to provide the best all around service to their customers. Like other family owned businesses, they had great obstacles to overcome during the pandemic. They adapted to the changes and survived. Both my wife and I feel Terry's quality in customer service, mechanical expertise, and honesty has degraded in the last two years. We're now on the lookout for another mechanic after having too many poor servicings with them recently, after having championed their work for 12 years. They failed to align my wife's tires properly just before a cross-country drive last year, which wore-out perfectly fine tires by the time we got to the midwest to our great disappointment, worn bare to the point we needed new tires. The staff were unapologetic when we brought this to their attention soon after. During other recent vehicle servicings, customer service on the phone has been curt and unwilling to elaborate on the service items on our bill, leaving us feeling like an unwelcome inconvenience on them. This is in stark contrast to the past when we'd leave our interactions always feeling like we'd talked with the person who worked on the car. Those past interactions reflected great willingness to explain the automotive work, and were always patient and helpful. I also suspect Terry's is now trying to milk our previous loyalty for easy cash through bogus servicing because Terry's most recent recommended servicing sticker on my vehicle is much too soon compared to the manufacturer's next recommended service interval for my vehicle's current miles. read more

Took the car in to have a nail taken out of a tire; also there was a rattle at some throttle settings, like a trash can banging around underneath. I mentioned both when I checked the car in, and walked away thinking "Omigod, I just told them to jack up the car and poke at it till it stops banging, I should have at least given them a dollar limit." But the bill was a pleasant surprise--fifty bucks' worth of labor to find and fix a rusted-out exhaust hanger. Every time I go here I think I should really look around more, they're not the only shop in town, and I hear they're pricey, and there's no hope of the old-fashioned drop-in service--everything is scheduled at least three days away. But they've done good work so far, and when they had a chance to make an easy hundred they just did what was needed. read more

My husband and I have taken many cars to Terry's over the years--both foreign and domestic. Our repairs have ranged from oil changes to major repair work. At all times, we received a fair and accurate estimate that ended up being what we owed when the work was done. My very first experience with Terry's was after a dealership told me I needed new brakes and I questioned that recommendation. I took the car to Terry's, told them what I had been advised and asked for their opinion. The outcome? No brakes needed. For quite some time, the brakes continued just fine. Had Terry's told me I did need brakes, they knew they would have gotten my business. I so appreciated the honesty and all my interaction since that time has supported my initial assessment. I thought mechanics charging for fake parts was something that only happens in movies. Nope! I brought my VW Tiguan here & they tried to charge me $500 for a part that doesn't exist. Thankfully, because it sounded fake I called the VW dealership who confirmed that it wasn't a real thing. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone, definitely shady people. read more

I came in to Terry's Auto with a flat tire on my wheelchair. Gauge helped me fix it with no charge. He even went above and beyond to carry me out of my handicap accessible vehicle and set me in my wheelchair so I could use their restroom facilities. I told him because of his muscles he should be a Firefighter. I was taken back to find out that he was already a dedicated firefighter and just does automotive work on the side. Automotive garage fires are all too common and as an owner of the company I would be grateful that my amazing technician is also a firefighter. Gauge did pass gas and blamed it on me, no hard feelings. If I had one in the chamber I would've smoke bombed him too. I will be back to upgrade my wheelchair brakes in the near future. read more

I started going here a few years back because it was the closest to my house. The reviews were decent and since I know next to nothing about cars I went hesitantly. Best choice ever! They take the time to explain what is wrong and never try and sell me on things I do not need. Almost always they complete the task under the quoted rate and if for any reason they find something else needing attention, they call before they do anything. Yes they tend to be a tad bit more expensive than other shops, but the customer service and that fact that I am not being swindled and the fact I can trust them is why I always go back. I have a crappy car and live over 30 minutes away with plenty of closer auto shops and I always go here and refer everyone to them as well. read more

If you like people wasting your time and not following through, these are your guys. I brought my truck in to diagnose a vibration. They said it was an unbalanced drive shaft. I scheduled a time to bring it back later and leave with them for 8 days while I was on vacation. When I returned, I called to make sure the 90 minute job was done and it hadn't even been started. They quickly concocted a weak excuse, then changed the original diagnosis, and informed me that the pinion seal leak they were also supposed to repair wasn't complete either because a stripped screw had defeated them. After all that, these guys didn't even bother to provide any remedy or plan to make it right. They were happy for me to just pick up my truck with no accountability on their behalf. Been a long time since I've encountered incompetence at this level. Looking forward to spreading the word to all who will listen to avoid this place like the plague. read more

I don't know where to start, so I'll walk through the entire process and let you decide: I brought my Truck to Terry's Automotive in Olympia for 2 problems: 1. The master cylinder in my truck had failed, and 2. I had a check engine light on for an air pressure issue in my fuel tank. They replaced the master and slave cylinder and as of now 13 months have gone by and it works perfectly. This was an expensive and difficult job, and so far the work is holding up, but that is all the good I can say. As for the check engine light fuel air pressure problem, they didn't seem to know what the issue was. They basically said they tinkered around with a lot of things and the check engine light went away. They did not replace anything. A few months later the check engine light came back on and I had it checked and it was the same exact problem. It went back off after a few days but then again came back on until I eventually had another mechanic fix it (which they had no problem identifying within minutes that a control valve had failed). Whatever tinkering Terry's Automotive did, it wasn't a real fix. I dropped my truck off at Terry's Automotive after hours and when they called me to give me the diagnosis and quote they wanted to do all kinds of extras including replacing windshield wipers, fluid, and changing my brakes (which were almost brand new). I honestly don't even think they checked my brakes but they just wanted to sell me some extras. I declined these extras, however they did replace my brakes and charged me for them anyway. The first time I went to pick up my truck I got about a block down the road and thought I was going to stall because I couldn't shift (I drive a stick shift) because the bolts that hold the shifter to the floor had apparently been removed during repairs and never got replaced. I returned within minutes and someone ran out and said "Oh, I knew I forgot to do something!" and immediately fixed it. The second time I left I got onto I5 and thought I was going to crash because when I would get up over 50MPH the entire truck would violently shake as if I was driving over a bunch of large rocks. I returned again and they weren't sure what it was, but said it was going to have to wait until tomorrow. It turned out that the brakes I told them not to install had been installed incorrectly and were vibrating and rubbing. It took two days to fix. However, since they had already screwed up twice they decided to lend me a vehicle to use in the mean time. They gave me an early 90s Dodge Caravan that had an ABS warning light on and clearly had braking problems, I doubt it was very safe to drive but I suppose it was safer than my truck was after they fixed it the first two times. The third time I picked up my truck there was a clunking sound whenever I would shift which in the 110,000 previous miles I had never had issues with. I didn't even bother returning because I was on my way out of town on vacation for over a week. Throughout the vacation (road trip) the clunking was noticeable but I was afraid to take it back at this point. I ended up checking into it myself and found that they had not bolted the transmission back in place! So it was able to slide and bounce around on top of the frame and transmission mount causing the clunking sounds. My trip to Terry's Automotive ended up costing me about $3,000+ and if everything they touched worked it probably would have been worth it. Unfortunately in my experience almost everything that could go wrong did, and the fact that their own shop vehicle clearly has unsolved braking problems is a big red flag. I could never recommend Terry's Automotive to anyone. The whole experience was like a bad sitcom and over a year later it still makes me cringe. read more

It's really hard finding a good mechanic that knows what they're doing, is reasonably priced, and trustworthy, but Terry's is it. For over twenty years, I've gone there and been greatly satisfied. Most mechanics look at the computer snd say Ok you car needs a $500 10,000 mile work done without even looking at the car. Terry's takes the time to do a complete inspection and tell you No this is still good or In X miles you'll need this. After 40 years on Olympia, I moved out of state, and only hope I can find a good mechanic like Terry 's. I don't recommend many businesses, but Terry's I do! read more

I went to Terry's automotive based on reviews and referrals. They ended up saving my upcoming road-trip/vacation by making needed repairs within a tight timeframe. To give some background a month before my road-trip I went to my dealer mechanics and asked for an inspection prior to my trip. They said everything was fine and to follow up with them for my 120k service check. Driving around I still felt something was wrong, hearing rattles and also wanted spark plugs replaced. So based on reviews and referrals I went to Terry's. They said my front brake was at 30% and dragging, also rear differential was messed up. They advised me not to even drive out of town! So much for my dealer mechanics... Terry automotive was able to fix both problems within 4 days. Luckily rear diff was a bearings issue only. Since picking up my vehicle I have noticed my car rides like new! The power is back (since brake fix) car running quiet again (likely to differential fix). Couldn't be happier and yes I would refer others to Terry's Automotive. read more

I dropped my car off because it was leaking oil. The original price quoted to me was $120 including an oil change. I asked for them to forgo the oil change since I prefer to have that done elsewhere, they said no problem. The quote was dropped to $80 - $40 for parts and $40 for labor. When I picked up my vehicle, I was charged the original $120 with the extra $40 charged under labor. Thinking it was an honest mistake, I came back and asked for a refund. As no oil change had been done, they said they'd be happy to do so. They only refunded me $20, half of what was owed back. At this point I realized either they were deliberately ripping me off or unable to do basic math. Either way, not someone I'd trust to do business with. I had read so many good reviews that this unfortunate experience really took me by surprise. Be careful and check the paperwork thoroughly before signing anything! read more

What? No Reviews for Terry's Automotive? If you need a car fixed around Olympia, there is no better place. This is not the cheapest place in town, nor the most expensive. It is simply the best. The owner has been working on cars and in the auto trade for years. OK, he was a buddy during high school - he was the motor head who was always working on a car. And he turned this passion for working on cars into his career. I don't know how long Terry has had the shop, but my dad was a regular customer and on the occasions I have needed repairs when around Olympia, this is where I go. I took my 15 passenger, 1 ton van in for an alternator they ended up doing a complete engine rebuild. No, it's not what you think, I asked them to check things out while they had it because it had a few other problems. They did a lot extra that they threw in with what they were doing, unlike many other places who charge for every little item. Terry's is AAA approved and has numerous certifications and approvals. You'll get good, honest professional treatment with Terry's staff. I have found a place near me who does good work, but if I hadn't I'd drive the 80 miles to Terry's for maintenance. read more

I took my car in for an inspection, cost $370 just for that and after they told me everything that was wrong the bill added up to about $1300 a week after everybody got their $1400 stimulus... a day after I got my car back my belt that they 'replaced' now had a very loud squeal to it and the mechanic tried to "chalk it up to the cold" then when I said I never had that problem before he told me it was the wrong size belt, now a week later and my engine light comes on again right before my car just give out and dies, when again it was running perfectly strong (besides an oil leak) before I took it in... beyond pissed read more

To the team at Terry's, thank you for your excellent customer service!! When I was working in Olympia, commuting from Grays Harbor, my alternator really started having issues. The car was dying everytime I had to stop at a light or slow down. I stopped at Terrys and was told they could not fit me in that day. I went out to start my car and then it was completely dead. I went back in and they must have taken pity on the poor non-car savvy lady and the Manager told me he would figure out a way to get me in that day, and then they shuttled me to work. Fast forward 15 months and my alternator again went out. Now I work in Ocean Shores and I took it to a local mechanic. He diagnosed the alternator issue and advised me to call Terry's to see if there was a warranty. I did and thankfully there was for a few more months. I worked with Robert who immediately had a new alternator ordered and delivered to Ocean Shores. They even paid for the labor to have it installed. Two days later , and just my luck, found out I got a faulty alternator. Spoke with Robert again and he so profusely apologized (totally not his fault) and said he would just call the mechanic in Ocean Shores and have him get an alternator locally so I would not be without a car again waiting for the part to be shipped. Every person I talked to 15 months ago and this most recent issue, has been a pleasure to work with. Brought my car in to Terry's Thursday morning with a flat tire. I was told they'd have a new tire in that afternoon but come Friday evening the job still isn't done (just mounting a tire). Billy, a staff memeber in the tire section, tells me they'll have to keep the car over the WEEKEND and condescendingly asks me if I'd "rather take the car to less schab" after I ask him to please get the job done and I'm obviously stuck there with a FLAT. I called Larsen's automotive (which closes at the same time as Terry's) and limped my way over with a FLAT and they took care of my tire ( and a couple other issues) even though they seemed just as swamped. Can't say enough good things about Larsen's. I will NEVER go back to Terry's. p.s- the new tire Terry's sold me wasn't even the same speed rating as the other tires on my car. I stopped by last week to get an estimate for removing adhesive from all the door panels of a car that I had recently purchased. I had tried to remove it myself with no luck. They spent a lot of time removing it for me, so there was no way I could have done it on my own. On top of it looking great, they insisted on doing it free of charge! This has restored my faith there are genuinely nice people still in this world! I don't live nearby, but I would drive here to get work done by people who are caring and do great work. They charge WAY too much for parts and labor. I was pressed for time a few years ago and needed the the valve cover gaskets and serpentine belt changed. They wanted to charge me over $250 in the end. Took it home and bought the parts myself for 50 bucks, took my time and had it done in an hour and a half, it really cut into my schedule, but there is no way i was going to pay that much for something so simple. One night I parked my car, and the next morning my friend moved it. When I went out to start it later that afternoon, it wouldn't turn over. I tried to jump start it, checked the battery, everything was fine, it just wouldn't run. It sat for a couple of weeks, and I tried different techniques on different days to get it to start. Finally I got it towed to Terry's. They said they got it running, the engine was just flooded (for weeks and despite my efforts?). I told them it had been having other problems, too, as it had sat for a year or so while I didn't have money to get it legal so they said they'd keep it an extra day and check it out further. Then I was told everything was fine except it'd probably need a tune up at some point. I picked it up, and it did start. I drove it and it drove shittier than before (rougher idle, really rough in low RPMs) but I'd just spent $ on getting it checked out and I didn't trust them anymore. I drove it probably about 150miles and then the Check Engine Light came on. As soon as I could, I called Terry's about it and was told "well, in a way that's exactly what we want to happen, now we can see what's wrong with it." I told the guy I wasn't too excited about having to spend a ton and go back since I'd just spent $60 for them to do nothing and he said "we actually gave you a break on that, it's usually around 90 to do an in depth inspection since it's done hourly, but we checked yours out for around a half hour so we cut you a break." Excuse me? They just cut corners. I took it to Qual A Ty in Lacey for a full tune up and they also found a leaking valve cover gasket and a distributor cap leak and a couple other things. They were nice, too. My car now runs perfectly and there is no Check Engine light. I'd heard good things about Terry's, but was totally disappointed with how they didn't listen to me and didn't take my car problem seriously/seem to have not checked the car out at all. The only thing keeping me from one star is that they didn't make up a bunch of false and expensive problems. read more

I was recommended Terry's by a friend when I first moved to Olympia. Took my Kia Sedona van to them for routine maintence and they were always reasonably priced and courteous and quick. Unfortunately though, my van began to have a pulley/power steering pump problem and I hoped that Terry's could solve the problem. After two pump/pulley replacements and several trips to them to solve the issue the van kept having the same issue. The second power steering pump and pulley that was replaced actually fell out of the engine compartment on to I-5. I gave up on them when they just couldn't determine the problem and finally took the van to the dealership to be repaired figuring they knew what they were doing - yes it was more expensive, but they fixed it correctly the first time. Would love to go back to Terry's but I'm a bit afraid of the results. read more

I had Terry's do some routine maintenance and repair of a couple electrical issues on my 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe. They were very courteous, and kept in close contact regarding any issues that came up. Because I could not afford to do everything that needed to be done in one visit, the tech took time to help me prioritize the "essential" work and identify what could wait. I was having brake problems. I work and almost live out of my car so it is very important to me. I called them in the morning and they got me in right away. It needed a lot of work so they gave me a ride home with a van they have to haul customers around with. When it was done they came and got me. It was not cheep, but nothing is now days it seems. I don't remember my car ever driving this nice or the brakes ever working this good. Better than new. I would go again! read more

BEST PLACE TO GO TO!!!!! I went across the street first to ask how much it would be to help me. (headlight casing needed to be cleaned of glass) and a new bulb to be put in... I EVEN bought the bulb myself. They tried to charge me 60 bucks for a simple task, and I left... WENT Over to Terry's, and they helped me FREE of charge. They were understanding, and very willing to help. Took about 25 minutes and everything was great!!! Thanks Terry's, you guys are the best!!! Always will come to you guys first! P.S.
