I will sectionalize this review because there were some things in the process I think deserve different ratings. Initial survey and installation scheduling: 3 Stars We signed up to get the solar roof from Tesla in February 2022. In march we had the roof survey. I was told by the surveyor the work that would need to be done to the roof to get it ready for the solar tiles. This price was also reflected in my quote. I was also told there was a delay in the install times due to supply chain issues. I was told to expect a call for scheduling in May or June. By early November, I had not heard anything yet. So, I called customer service to check the status. The rep was very helpful and got my install scheduled for the 3rd week of November. About a week or so before the install, I was called by Tesla and told that after reviewing my plans further, it looked like a small area over my garage didn't meet the pitch requirement for the solar tiles so, an alternate roofing material would have to be used. I was also told it would blend in nicely. I was also told the price would be a little more for this additional material (3k more). They told me they wanted to let me know before the job so I could back out if I wanted to. I was happy they told me about and proceeded with the install time. This part of the process I rated 3 stars because I was not called by Tesla for the install time and the small area of the roof that didn't meet the requirement wasn't mentioned on the initial survey. Installation Crew: 5 Stars The installation week arrived and the crews that came out did a great job. The crew leader's name is Geronimo and his team is called "Colussus" out of Martinez. They were on time, worked quickly, were very polite and accommodating. The whole install went off without a hitch. They did it over 2 weeks. The first week was sub-contracted where they did the tear down, decking, underlayment and the area of the garage that was not going to have tiles. This took 3 days. The second week they did the Powerwall install and solar tile install. This took 3 days as well. After the Powerwall was installed, the crew went over the Tesla App and all features in it with us. This was very helpful. Geronimo also went over with me the hazards and safety things if I have to walk on the roof for work on my HVAC system. He even provided a safety mat to put on the roof to prevent slipping while walking on it. He and his crew had great customer service. Initial Roof Completion: 3 stars When the roof was initially "finished," the untiled area over the garage did not blend well or look good with the solar tiles. This is because that part of my roof was coded in the design plan as a "Flat-roof," even though that part is just under a 3:12 pitch. Therefore, it was finished with a black rolled composite material you find on flat roofs. This wasn't the fault of the install crew because they can only do what is in the plan. But, this was an issue with the initial survey. Project Advisor: 5 Stars My Project Advisor's name is Michael Kielbasa. He was great! He was very knowledgeable about the product and answered all my questions prior to the install. He was very responsive and got things done quickly. When the roof was initially "finished" I sent him a picture and told him the material over my garage does not blend well and it made the roof look unfinished. I asked him if there is any way we can put non solar producing tiles in the section after all since there is some pitch and it's not flat. If not, I asked him if we could have a different finished installed instead. He sent the pictures and my concerns to the operations and install team. He arranged for the install crew leader, Geronimo, from the install team come out and measure the pitch of that section to reassess if it actually is possible to have the tiles installed there. Geronimo said he was comfortable that it could be done with no pooling/drainage issues, but had to get clearance from his supervisor. Shortly after, Michael emailed me and told me they got the green light to install the tiles in that section after all. They had the crew out the next day and they completed it over 2 days! They also did not charge me anything additional. Michael was great and I was very happy to have a Project Advisor that helped put our minds at ease during the entire process with great customer service! Actual Roof Completion: 5 Stars After the crew came back out and finished that untiled section, I was very happy with the finished product. The roof has held up will through a couple weeks of heavy rain and wind. It has been producing well although I have not yet seen its full potential because of the weather and clouds. Overall Experience: 4 Stars I'm rating my experience as a whole as 4 stars because although a lot went right, I did have to be my own advocate with certain parts of the process (Scheduling, Initial finished look). Even with all the bad reviews on different platforms, I chose TESLA solar because I felt they a reputable company. Plus I have a TESLA car that I'm really happy with. I installed a brand new roof that was finished on 7/24/22. The roof is a 50 year roof with certainteed presidential TL shingles (very thick shingles). The very next day, 7/25/22, Tesla came and installed solar panels and a powerwall 2. At the end of the installation my brand new roof looked 15 years old. The shingles have been destroyed. I understand normal wear and tear from being walked on but this was more than that. I surmised the installers were dragging equipment and their boots. Within 2 days, 7/27/22, of installing the powerwall the system would periodically shut down. Tesla said that it was normal... the same day I saw coolant leaking from the inverter. Turns out the system was shutting down periodically because it was overheating. They scheduled technicians to replace the inverter in three days, 7/30/22 between 0700-1300 hours. I received a text the day of at 0800 notifying me that my appointment has been canceled. No explanation. It took text messages back and forth to schedule the new appointment. A few days later they installed a new inverter. The next day the new inverter is overheating again. It has been over 10 days since I've told them about the issue and it has not been fixed. Brand new system... Text messages with them go nowhere. Standby to standby. I called and text looking for a supervisor. I was told there are no supervisors I can speak with. No accountability is the issue which is why reviews for TESLA is what they are. MICHAEL KIELBASA is the service advisor that I've been dealing with. He's unreachable. The handful of times I was able to reach him he told me he would talk to his supervisors to resolve the matter. It's been almost a year. Im coming up on a year still no resolution. Im filing a complaint with the states department of consumer affairs. So frustrating. Spend the extra money. Go with another company. read more

Waited for two weeks for status update and design that never came. Had to call Tesla twice and chat to find out that our roof type is not eligible (info not listed anywhere in FAQ or communicated to me). According to Tesla Project Advisor, Tesla only works on flat/low pitch roofs which are torchdown or standing seam metal. What a pointless waste of time. Even after this chat, order status still listed in account as pending; how long were you going to hold on to my $250 deposit without telling me?!?! Worst communication and customer service of any solar company I have experienced. Customers might be drawn in by the extremely low solar prices, but good luck getting any work completed. read more

The worst experience with a supposed "reputable company." Shady practices and unorganized. They installed solar on my house with the wrong, lower producing design. Then gave me every excuse that there was a problem with the roof but they neglected to admit the truth....that they did not update the design and the crew installed the wrong design. Spoke with many "Michael"- Tesla Project managers/advisors only to repeat my story multiple times finally reaching Mark Anthony Feng where we discussed reconfiguration of the whole design to the original design which will leave holes in my roof which they will patch or keeping the same design and adding a panel. I settled for adding a panel with a rebate. Mark conveniently forgot to request the rebate and a rebate never came. I called several months later and they stated there was no such rebate. We need a Tesla Solar technician to come out and repair /troubleshoot/replace our solar inverter, because Edison advised us that our solar hasn't been producing energy since last February! We cannot find a phone number that actually connects us to a human to request a technician to come out! None of the online methods have helped us to get ahold of a solution or a person! This company should be paying my $3,200 Edison bill that keeps getting larger! Why haven't they sent us a technician to fix this miserable issue months ago? I'm fortunate to have a solar roof configuration and batteries at my house, and it was installed by a great team lead by Geronimo with others a few years ago. I had an issue with it earlier this week and I was delighted when Geronimo knocked at the door yesterday to work on the issue. Essentially the same crew arrived including Jesus, Jose, Brian and Sohaib. Folks I trust and sure enough the issue was addressed and all is well. Started the process for solar + storage in May. Filled out tons of paperwork, provided site maps, corrected them multiple time for drawing the system on the wrong house (lol), had a site visit, and waited 4 weeks to "submit permits"...only to suddenly get an email with no explanation that my application was cancelled. The one email address I had seemed to generate endless JIRA tickets to only be answered by one poor guy in Utah who seemed powerless to say or do anything. What a joke - no customer service, no visibility into the design process, no expectation setting and laughably slow turnaround times - and it's more expensive than local installers! These clowns obviously have not figured out how to scale solar. Stay away. read more

To start with the good points. The system works quite well and the engineering is first class, as with the cars. The installers were good and did what needed to be done. Now the bad parts. It took 8 months to get the powerwalls installed. There was no communication from Tesla over that period. The site technician had no idea what he was doing, he put the garage on the wrong side of the house in his drawings. The installers wanted to bag it when they arrived but I talked them in to the installation. The powerwalls are not approved by my utility yet, its been a month. Payment was requested immediately. There is a California Self Generation Incentive Program valued ate about $2,600 per powerwall. The installers should make the application. Tesla at one call said they had done the application. I later found out that they hadn't. Any reference to the SGIP Tesla does not respond. Finally the app. is very nice but it takes upwards of 3 weeks for it to become fully functional. Updated system took extra 2 months to install because of thier incompetent system for tracking a project. Finally got it in. Now wait for PTO from PGE. Noticed that the main power box was hot. They came out that night and the switch the moved was arcing. Would have caused a fire if I did not catch it and call thier emergency line. Then I had to call the local General Manager as the emergency line could not get a response. I did get someone out that night. Glad I had his number. Then I was testing and got less than 1/2 the output. I got 6 different explanations and excuses for why. But they constantly said they would not do anything until PTO. IF THEY SAY THAT THEY WILL CALL YOU BACK DO NOT BELIEVE THEM!! 6 MONTHS NOT ONE CALL BACK. System is not working and I have PTO and no one to come and fix it. I want to review Tesla energy: I arranged to have panels and batteries installed. The pre-purchase customer service was abysmal. The installation went OK except 1 panel not working. Was promised would be resolved at a visit 5 days later, no show. Meanwhile, "quality inspector" showed up 3 days after install (and before panel fixed) to check my system without advanced warning, so I was not home. Unable to get thru to anyone because of huge wait times on the phone. Over the course of this project spoke with many people, none seemed to communicate with each other. After numerous calls, three actual attempts with live reps, my name is still not spelled correctly on the account. Yesterday (a Sunday) got a text that the maintenance people would come 3 WEEKS after the install to fix the installation. I called this AM to ask if they can come earlier, especially since I waited 6 weeks to have it installed. Was promised a call back today after they "consulted with the installation group". Now 5:15 PM, no call, no text. If I knew this was going to be the experience (and unfortunately looks like it will be the continuing experience), I might not have chosen Tesla. The Installation Team did a great job on installing the system. They were courteous and did a great job with the design. It seems to me that the negative comments are made mostly by Lease customers. Because of this, I don't recommend leasing Solar from ANYONE. Purchase your product and receive the greatest discount. I did experience some lack of organization from the staff in the Office, but Jon's consistent dedication overshadowed all of that. I was on hold for 56 minutes until I got someone on the phone. After that they assigned me to an agent. The agent was very unresponsive to my email. Didn't tell me what I need to do where to pay the fee? I still don't know if I could even close escrow on time. Next time I am buying a home with solar lease. Worst decision I could have made when choosing a solar company. They use Complete Solar as their installer and they are the absolute worst. Delay after delay which cost me over $1000 out of pocket. My panels were installed on 7/15/2021 and were not turned on until 1/13/2022. I had several months that I was getting an electricity bill and a solar bill. I tried to reach out to Tesla Energy for help as they were the ones that hired Complete Solar and I had no say so or choice in using them. I submitted a request to add Tesla power walls in January 2021; they didn't prioritize our request due to not adding their solar panels - I have no issues with that. They went through 5 different points of contacts over the entire year with no proactive communication on when we could expect our panels; over 13 months later, I just received a notification that we should consider working with a third party provider and 0 comments on whether we'd receive our deposit back. There are no zero's! Customer Service is close to non-existent and do not communicate with the Customer. Use another company. RANT: I have a Solar City installed system with two inverters. The lease was taken over by Tesla. At the beginning of June, one of the inverters malfunctioned and stopped working, so I called for a repair. After waiting several weeks for them to verify the part needed, an appt was finally made for July 11th with a window between 7am - 11am (Monday). At about 10am the day of, I called and was told they had cancelled the appt because they had sent the part to the wrong warehouse. Someone should have called me but didn't. They would call when the part was located and verified at the Martinez CA warehouse. I got the call about a week later verifying the part was now in Martinez and we scheduled another appt for July 25th (Monday) with their time window of 7am - 1pm. The day of, I waited and at about 10am when I hadn't heard from them, I called again. The Customer Care person verified the appointment was still active, they had the part, and she would have the Field Tech call with an ETA as soon as possible. No call. At 1pm, I called again speaking to a CC person in Buffalo. He also verified the appt was still showing active and I explained a little more of the circumstances. He put me on hold to verify again. He came back and told me that at 9am this morning, the warehouse Lead "Andrew" emailed someone to report the part was NOT in the warehouse. No one bothered to note the account or call me, thus wasting another day for me. My system has been running at about 1/3 it's capacity since the beginning of June. Unbelievable. Third appt date to be determined. It looks like several other customers are making the same complaint, too. read more

We have been leasing from SolarCity for a few years now. We have already made back our initial investment. My main issue with them is nobody mentioned the possibility of pigeons nesting on my roof. For an additional $800 they were able to contract a company to block the pigeons from getting under the panels. Now we're fairly satisfied with what have. We have saved more than they estimated when we started the lease. The installation team was great and very clean! read more

If you have issues or problems.....you might now be too happy as the sales person is probably not going to be able to do much and getting issues solved.....well some won't be a priority. If those three things sound like you, call Wyatt Jones at 480.522.7559 and make an appointment. He's very knowledgeable and there is no pressure. I don't own the solar panels, they do so it's their responsibility. They're basically borrowing my roof and I'm paying them for the power they generate. Of course I'm paying them less than what PG&E charges. If the solar panels produce more than I use, PG&E pays me in the form of a bill credit. Think of Solar City as a cheaper competitor to PG&E. The difference is that their power plant is on your roof and it's clean energy. I think that's pretty cool. read more

The process went very smoothly and Jasmin was knowledgable, professional and helpful every step of the way addressing questions and concerns in a very punctual manner. I always knew what the next step was and the time frame it would be accomplished. Install was very quick. Not worth getting the system. I've had solar city system for about 3 yrs. In that time the system has been inoperable for about 4 mos out of the 3 yrs. All in the summer months when the air conditioning is on. Not only do I have to pay for the system ($30k) I had to pay over a $1k to pg&e for true up each year.( Energy used that was not produced by the panel.) All customer service kept saying is you are guaranty to produce a certain amount of energy and I am responsible for the true up. I tried to explain to her that I probably would've have a true up bill if the system was working properly. Her response was "you are responsible for the true up bill ". That must be their standard answer because she used that line over 20 times in our conversation. read more

Solarcity likes to have non professionals diagnosis roof leaks. They installed solar panels on my roof last year. Everything was fine until the rains came. Now my roof leaks and they won't fix it. They sent one of their techs out to look at it. He said it was the flashing around the fireplace. My point to them was : 1- it didn't leak before they put panels on my roof 2- they sent a non roofing professional to check it out. DON'T USE SOLARCITY!!!! read more

Be VERY careful with this company. What we love about them is the product and initial installation. After they have your money--they don't care. I called them because we need to replace our roof and need to remove our panels and reinstall them. To do this, per their contract, we must use a company approved by them or they will void our warranty. When we asked who they would approve, we were told that they do not give out names of companies. When I read to them the portion of the contract that stated whatever solar company we used must be approved by them, they read me verbiage from a DIFFERENT contract that they said we signed. Did they electronically change our initial contract?? They then told us to use any qualified solar company and it would not void our warranty. When I asked them to put THAT in writing they refused. The first guy disconnected me and never called back. The second guy, after I questioned him about the different contracts, claimed I was yelling at him and hung up. On my third phone call (after going through the long phone tree--for the THIRD time) they sent us their contract and it was DIFFERENT than our original document. Apparently they can change your contract at any time and can claim anything they choose--including voiding your warranty. My advice is know that after they have your money, you have no recourse. Read the other reviews on them--from transfer of leases and any such paperwork to diagnosis of roof leaks after install, to long hold times with no answer and disconnections, inability to talk with a manager---the list goes on and on. This post is not about SolarCity Martinez - it is Solar City in General If Yelp allows NO STAR i would've picked that just for wasting my time. I was approached by SolarCity Several time at Best Buy Pinole, Finally one day I listened the Ken. it made since to me so I made an appointment I got a very knolagable guy come to the house and ran the numbers and the credit bla bla bla.. so i continued with them. the guy has good communication skills came by the house explained everything answered all my questions. scheduled a survey - guy comes in took a look a the Attic, went on the roof spend have a day taking picture ... approved what he saw. I thought we were done. another visit at the house run through the numbers again approve the design... by then i am exhausted and ready for them to start the installation. i signed the first contract, approved, revised contract, singed and approved, Third time is a charm another revision on the contract , went throughout it and approved, a few days later we get an email to sign the contract again, we look the contract and the payment has jumped close to 25% - think about 25% increase for 30 year that is massive. so i called my guy and said what is going on. He blamed it on some bullshit story about California new regulations - so i replied right when i signed California decided to do do something that increases my Monthly payment by 25% so i told him to cancel the whole thing until further notice. i ran in the Salesperson in best buy and he said let me fix it and i'll get back to you ... he even told me legally when you sign a contract base on a quote it is good for 30 days no matter what. but I figured it is their loss to mine. i was a good prospect agreed and signed everything they asked me but the SCREWED IT ALL UP. be careful. I am a real estate agent selling a home with a leased Solar City system on the roof. Solar City is completely holding up the deal and in my opion lowering the value of the property. Think long and hard before you put a leased solar system on your home, if you are thinking about selling your home in the future. It's not much different than leasing out any other part of your home.
