My husband tracked down my dads old guitar (from the sixties) because I've wanted to learn how to play forever and he knows how much having it would mean to me. With that being said, there are quite a few adjustments and updates needed. Since this is a priceless guitar and very special to me, I wanted to make sure I took it to the right people. I went to Texas Guitar Hospital today to get a quote. I spoke with Dave for quite a while and discussed that it's a very sentimental object for me and I want to be able to play on it and keep it for the next 50+ years. He not only worked on what he could while I waited but he explained every detail of what he would repair and how that would improve the sound of the guitar. I have no doubt that they will take absolute care with my guitar and treat it like their own. Dave is not only extremely kind and friendly, but I have no doubt in the world he is the best out there. Period. He has so much knowledge on everything from guitar repairs to custom guitar assembly. As someone who knows near nothing about this guitar, he helped me understand what needs to be done now, what can wait, and what I can do to prolong the life of my guitar. Instead of trying to replace as much as he possibly could, he was honest about repairs needed and didn't pressure me into doing anything extra. Dave at Texas Guitar Hospital did an expert Job replacing my generic bridge with a Kahler bridge, which he had in stock. I brought in my 1986 Hohner, Randy Rhoads Custom V to have the broken bridge replaced. Dave custom fitted the Kahler bridge into the existing pocket without altering the guitar body or drilling new holes. After Dave performed bridge intonation and a truss rod adjustment my guitar plays better than ever. Dave Wintz is a strait shooter and gave me solid, realistic options for repairs, while keeping budget in mind. I really appreciate his dedication to quality service. Originally posted: 23, May 2018. Texas Guitar Hospital is outstanding in service and professionalism. I took my vintage MIJ Electra Les Paul Bass to them for repair. My bridge pickup was dead. Finding a replacement pickup was near impossible. I decided to have the original vintage pickup repaired. I coordinated with Dave Wintz to bring it in. The repair performed by Mike was excellent. I was prepared for the worst, a rewind and rebuild of the pickup. Mike disassembled, cleaned, repaired and refurbished my pickup with exceptional care and attention to detail. In my case I spent 1/3 of what I was expecting the worst to be. I was blown away. My bass guitar is fully functioning and sounds awesome. Mr. Wintz gave me a tour of his facility. It was impressive. Any repair you need they are more than capable of performing. If you want a custom build they are more than capable of that too. I'm a professional musician hailing from Houston, have a few decades of experience on the subject of pro gear and many of my friends would agree they are of the same ilk. I would also say that many of them are somewhere in the realm of 'tone hound', gear head...even guitar slinger / local legend. Point is I had a huge experience pool to tap into when it came time for me to decide to get my 5 string fretless bass a tune up / overhaul and possible upgrade. After considering all kinds of tips and advice plus my usual YouTube video tutorial binge (I *am* a do-it-yourselfer...but alas, one with limited free time) and drawing on my own experience, I decided to leave my baby with the fine folks at Texas Guitar Hospital. I was well aware they had decades of experience with ALL aspects of guitars...building, painting, customizing, custom pickups...you name it. So, wow it turns out I made the right choice! These guys custom-made me a set of five string bass pickups to fit the special sized openings in my instrument.  Cool! When I got the bass back it played so much better than when I brought it in.  I leave it out of the case now where I can grab it. I'm inspired again to play it more! I picked up a used guitar (Takamine EAN15C - acoustic/electric) at a pawn shop and brought it to Dave for a much needed tune up (straightened neck, fret board cleaning, fret polish, lowered the action, nut repair, polish, new strings). Dave is a straight shooter. He recommended only the necessary things for the guitar to function and play well. He gave very honest, professional opinion. I took his advice, and now the guitar looks, sounds, and plays AMAZING. He definitely brought this guitar back to life. The strings are so much easier to press down on. The lowering of the action helped tremendously. Bar chords can be held effortlessly all the way down the neck. Every guitarist should consider lowering their action. It's totally worth it. All in all, Texas Guitar Hospital is the place to go for all your guitar needs. Dave does it all. His shop is full of guitar history (he gave me a tour), in my opinion - there is nobody more experienced and diligent with their work. Thank you Dave! I brought my Martin D 28 Shenandoah from the 80s to Texas Guitar Hospital which I found on Yelp. Hadn't had strings on it in a long time and I needed to get it back in playing condition. It's in great shape, just needed to be played. Two days later I got it back and it's awesome. Frets polished, fingerboard cleaned and oiled, the transducer pickup that didn't work before and the loose jack is working again, and the action was lowered to total comfort and easy playability. A good cleanup and polish and it almost looks new again. I'm so excited to play it. Also found out this is the location of the old Robin guitar factory and Dave who worked on my guitar is the original owner and builder of Robin and other guitar brands. Totally made me feel like they knew what they were doing. Great job and thanks again. Would totally recommend! I have four or five more guitars that also need resurrection. I can't say enough good things about Texas Guitar Hospital. Dave (the owner) is extremely knowledgeable about guitars and very friendly and helpful. I brought in a 1967 Epiphone that I hadn't played in years as a previous shop had told me that the neck needed to be reset. Not only did Dave fix my guitar without resetting the neck and for 1/3 of the price that I was expecting, but he got it all done within a day, and now it plays and sounds better than ever! If you care about your instrument, take it to Texas Guitar Hospital. You and your guitar will be in good hands. It's a 4-hour round trip for me coming from East Texas, but it's well worth it. I wouldn't take my vintage gear anywhere else. And if Dave asks you if you'd like a tour of the building - say yes! Took my MIM Strat there for a setup and new pickups. Dave the owner was very knowledgeable and helpful. He made pickup recommendations based on the type of guitar body wood and the style of music that I played. I had no idea that there were all these factors that contributed to the guitar's sound. He recommended getting a bone nut and setup. Wow this guitar plays like butter now. I didn't realize that guitars don't come with a proper setup from the factory. The before and after playability is off the charts. Chords intonate better and I can play for hours without any finger soreness. As for the pickups...it sounded like a blanket had been taken off my amp. More timbre across the entire frequency range and sustain for days. What a great overall experience. These guys really care about their work and go the extra yard. I will definitely be bringing them more of my guitars!! read more

Tremendous knowledge of guitars and how to set up guitars. Fixed a broken pickup and set up the neck on my Robin guitar. Very reasonable price. Showed me things about my guitar that I didn't know, and really brought out the great sound of the guitar. There's nothing like getting a guitar fixed by a guy who literally can make every part in the guitar - from pickup to neck to body - and in my case- actually did. Conveniently located just off 610 near 10. Worked with me to arrange convenient drop off and pickup times. Agree with the other reviewers- don't miss the tour of the guitar factory - well worth the time and fascinating to see how everything is made. Really a highlight for me. If you are looking for pickup upgrades, Rio Grandes are great. Transformed my Japanese Telecaster from ok to fantastic, and off course are the foundation of any Robin guitar. read more

I took my guitar to a "guitar tech" a bit closer to where I live out of convenience....and paid for it. The finish was cracked down to the wood and the wiring was destroyed in the process of sorting out a simple ground fault. After much discussion with the manufacturer of the guitar and talking to several guitar repair shops here in the Houston area, I settled on the Texas Guitar Hospital. They were able to repair the finish damage and sort the wiring out in short order and for a reasonable price. Dave and co. were very accommodating, up front and honest about the processes involved and shot the entire job out of the park. I can't really tell anything ever even happened to the body. The wiring is back to normal and all is well. I would recommend their services without reservation. I couldn't be more pleased with the service and outcome of a bad situation. read more

This is one amazing place. They can build a high end guitar from scratch, repair almost any guitar related issue and offer full set-up for electric & acoustic guitars. I went over to see Dave Wintz at the new Texas Guitar Hospital and he set up my Strat that had lost it's way. Now it plays like butter!
