I've been to this place many times in Ames and never been disappointed. Eaten everything from steaks to salads, and it's darn good every time. They always start out with rolls and we ALWAYS ask to take a box home- thats a pro tip. This time I ordered the steak tips and gravy- served with onions and mushrooms- it was quite good. This was the first time I've had their brown gravy and it is better than the white gravy. I am going to order that again. We really enjoy their drinks too- margarita with sangria in it is an excellent choice and we recommend that. All n all, I'd come back and eat here again 1000 times over. read more

First time here with my mom. She had the ribeye 10oz with sweet potato and garden salad. I had the prime rib 10oz with butter corn and garden salad. My husband made us a reservation ahead of time for 7:00 pm. When we arrived our table want ready, they gave us a buzzer, and had us wait. Once our table was ready we didn't get to sit together as a party either. Very disappointing! There's quite a bit of congestion inside the door by the host stand. It's also where part of the kitchen is and where the food comes out. It's a miracle those servers don't drop their big trays of food coming out of the kitchen with so many people standing there! The servers act annoyed that patrons are standing there and some servers are rude about it when patrons are in the way. However, there's no where else to stand once your buzzer goes off and staff doesn't always move swiftly to get patrons to their seats. Food is always delicious! Our server was also fabulous! Endless yummy rolls and butter. It was my birthday so they bring out a saddle and do a fun little shout out when there's a birthday. Also brought out ice cream as a birthday freebee. There is nothing even remotely salvageable about this place. The food was terrible, the atmosphere was awful and the service was not good. First off, we waited to be seated for almost 45 minutes after being told we'd be seated in five at the most. Several others that came in later were seated well before we were. Once we were seated our waitress was slow and messed up our orders. As for the food, they have a big menu but nothing our party had was good at all. I had the chicken fingers (which they had given some redneck name in attempts to sound more "Texan") and they were quite disgusting. My wife had a steak which was cooked incorrectly and tough. Several around us sent back their stakes for the same reason. Cooking a steak isn't easy, but a chef shouldn't have trouble doing that. The atmosphere here is flat-out cheesy. Apparently this restaurant thinks it's somehow neat to have their customers toss their peanut shells on the floor. I find it unsanitary. While we were eating all of the waitstaff decided it would be fun to get together and start line dancing. I'm not sure it could get any more annoying than this. This was the final nail in the coffin. Only people that enjoy this kind of crap would think this is entertaining while you're trying to choke down their nasty food (with one exception... the dinner rolls and cinnamon butter were good, but not good enough to bring me back). If this is supposed to represent the state of Texas then Texas Roadhouse has completely missed the mark. I would say it insults the culture of that state more than it does show it off. If you're looking for a nice relaxing meal, this is not the place to go. I found the experience to be chaotic and frustrating. We went on a Saturday night, which I understand is a very busy night. The wait was an hour long and twice we were asked by staff to move from where we were standing. I'm not sure where they expected us to go, since they directed us to an area that was already packed so full of people there was no place to stand. On top of all the chaos of packed people they add in blaring music to complete the experience. When we finally got our name called we were directed to another area to wait again. We were then lead to our table and when we were half way to the table...we had to wait again! I have to admit that giving us warm rolls as we sat down did take away some of the sting of the wait. Our food was decent and our server was very attentive and did a great job. The steak had good flavor and was cooked just like I ordered it. But it was still hard to have a relaxing meal with the loud music and the line dancing servers. All in all the food was good but the atmosphere made the experience less than favorable. Well, I always start with the positives 1) the wait staff was energetic and extremely friendly 2) our waiter "waited" on us a good amount 3) service was really quick 4) we never had a bread basket that was empty 5) the bread rolls and cinnamon butter were fantastic 6) I like the bucket of peanuts 7) everyone else loved their food...but me Now it's time for the things that could be worked on 1) the atmosphere is quite loud...but I guess that should be expected 2) my pork chop, although it was moist, was extremely salty 3) I don't think green beans should be swimming in butter Three negatives, and those are my opinions since the rest of the group loved their food. We went here with an email deal that turned out to be for the Des Moines location, but they still honored it. That started my night out great. Then they brought out the beers we ordered. I guess I forgot how HUGE those beers are! My wife and I both got steaks and asked medium-rare. I would say they were closer to medium-well or well, but they were still juicy, the place was packed, and we were starving, so we didn't bother saying anything. I'd give this location another star if they could consistently cook a steak. I prefer my steaks medium rare; however this place over cooks them and often times they come out as medium well. Assuming that they will always overcook the steak, I have adapted and learned to order my steaks rare at this place in hopes that it will be medium rare... and unfortunately they still come out medium well sometimes! The complimentary rolls are always fresh and delicious, but the peanuts are often very stale or soggy. The service here is super friendly but not always the most attentive. My time at this location was awful from the start. After waiting 15 minutes for a host to make their way to seat me when the restaurant was empty... I was greeted by a manager named Eric. Knowing we had waited to be sat, he instantly began blaming his host staff and took none of the blame for his restaurants poor service. Being that my friend and I were already frustrated, we decided to order quickly and get the heck out. Too bad it took him another 15 minutes to even assign our server to our table. After clearly being forgotten about and disrespected we decided to get up and leave. We then headed to Hickory Park where we enjoyed great service and even better food! I hadn't really expected to write an updated review of Texas Roadhouse because I already wrote one a year and a half ago, but I did want to give this restaurant a shout-out for the great way they are handling the coronavirus emergency. My wife and I attempted originally to order the online promised free delivery from another restaurant, only to be beset with problems: a seriously reduced menu, delivery that was going to take an hour and a half, and a message that kept telling us that items in our cart were not available, but not telling us which items. Finally we gave up and tried the Roadhouse instead, and this time I attempted to do it by phone. My call was answered promptly by a very pleasant-sounding human being, who took my order and promised that it would be ready in 20 minutes. And it was. The order was 100 percent accurate, and even after a drive across town bring it home, was warm enough to eat without having to microwave it. (I had the roadkill dinner, my wife the salmon; we have had both before and enjoyed them, and today was no exception.) The restaurant was clearly on top of things. Minutes after placing the order, we got a phone call from them saying that the Thousand Island dressing I ordered for my salad was not available; I was able to immediately order a replacement. (I got a parmesan dressing that was probably better than the Thousand Island would have been.) When my wife drove up to get our order, there was a mild wait because a couple of cars were in front of us, but she said the restaurant had an efficient system for doing things and she only waited for less than five minutes. The one drawback to doing takeout was that I couldn't order a refill of their excellent rolls (they did give us a bunch in the order). Obviously that's not anything I can fault the restaurant for, however. Previously, my wife and I visited this restaurant about once a month or so; my guess is that in the near future we'll probably be coming here more like once a week. A restaurant offering prompt service, very good food, and fast and reliable takeout is a real attraction these days. One final note: I have always wished that the restaurant was open all day on weekdays, and it now appears from their website that they are. Bottom line: please patronize this restaurant! Restaurants are hurting right now, and patronizing them is a good thing for them, their staff, the community, and (at least in this case) you as well. read more

I have eaten here twice in the past month....both times the steak I ordered (the Ribeye).....was nothing but salt. I thought...maybe the first time it was just a mistake....so gave them another try....same thing....you take a bite of steak....nothing but salt. Did not even finish the steak. As far as a restaurant chain steakhouse, this is my favorite. The only time we are able to make it to Ames is on the weekends, so there is usually a wait which is about the only bad thing about the place. There is a reason for it. Our steaks are always prepared to order, service is always excellent, the beer is always cold and my wife loves to take home the peanuts! read more
