Great sushi! I had the EBay and Mr. Netscreen rolls. Fish was fresh and the portions were generous. My mom got the bento box and thought the salmon was overcooked, which is why I'm giving a 4 rather than 5 star rating. She liked the other items and took some home for leftovers as there was a lot of food. The restaurant was not crowded and we were seated right away. Service was friendly and efficient. This restaurant is such a gem in Montclair, Oakland Hills area. It doesn't look like much from the outside. I have passed by it numerous time but never thought to try it. Finally give this restaurant a try and I regret that I didn't try it sooner. Super friendly staff, we wear seated at the bar and our chef was wonderful and very knowledgeable of their selection and where the food come from. Sounds like they are allergies friendly too, just let them know. We had a few nigiri and the quality was very solid. The cut is nice and thick. Well balance of fish and rice. I can be full from just 3 orders of nigiri ( 2 per order so 6 total) I'm not a big fan of rolls but the rolls here are very good. My favorite is the lion king roll, nice and smokey cheese sauce. Parking in the area can be tricky during rush lunch and dinner hour, mostly street parking only. There is a parking lot down a block too. Overall great restaurant! read more

Weve lived in Montclair for nearly eight years and one thing we hate about the village is that there are very few really good food options. Tgi Oni offers great portions and their Maki or nigiri never disappoints. Top tip that others might not know is that their bento boxes are excellent. The wife and I often share a three item bento (chicken katsu is our favorite item) with a few sides for lunches as well as dinners. We were promised food readied by 7:08 pm, and we walked out at 7:45 pm! We went here with a group of three families - all of us had 2 kids under five. Normally I expect wait staff to ignore or dread a group like us because little kids (and parents) can be challenging but the atmosphere was perfect/calming for our kids to help them settle (video of sealife playing, great afternoon lighting) and team at TGI Oni was so so thoughtful of our kids - bringing little cups they had, apple juice, seaweed (even though it wasn't on the menu) and after dinner they gave our kids lollipops and moon pies. Guess just too busy... ....and alas, also too busy today. But since we got some takeout recently, I just wanted to note that as usual their sushi/sashimi is spot on. Generous helpings of fresh succulent fish. Perfect sushi rice. We also ordered their Teriyaki Don which tasted great. Perfect thick teriyaki sauce, good rice, and very well flavored char grilled chicken. Could be juicier, but the flavor is intense and makes up for the lack of moisture. Their tempura sux though. Don't get it. Terribly bland and dull coating. Veegetables were either over or under cooked. I'll write more next time. OH, you should know, there are 2 sushi places in Montclair. The other SUCKS. OMG- the sashimi here is to die for!! I wanted to try this new sushi spot in Montclair Village for my birthday lunch today and was so happy I did. It was so delicious that I had to write a review right away. Went a few minutes after it opened and I was the first patron so I had a good seat near the window. Gotta have that good food porn pic lighting! The ambiance was clean, vibrant and inviting. My server was sweet and prompt. The menu had so many yummy looking options- the prices were a little on the pricier end and I wondered if it would be worth it. I was in the mood for an interesting roll and some fresh sashimi. I ordered the 5 piece sashimi appetizer - sake (3) and hamachi (2)- $12. I judge a sushi spot by its sashimi and did it deliver! First off; the sashimi cuts were huge and the presentation was really pretty. I had to admire it for a seconds before its complete annihilation. I'm glad the natural lighting did it justice. One bite of the salmon sashimi and it melted in my mouth- I didn't want it to end so I savored each bite. It was SO good! Please order it if you are a sashimi fan. The hamachi was also delicious. The Kristina roll came shortly after and it was huge! It was also really tasty, although I wish they had a better tempura batter for the shrimp- it didn't seem to come together and it fell a little short for me. Other than that, it was absolutely delicious. I also had a miso soup (on the house) and it was very flavorful, though a bit on the saltier end. I was chilling out at my Humble House in the Flatlands and got a Craving for Sushi!!!! I remember seeing a new Sushi Restaurant TGI ONI Sushi on a Yelp Email. So I decided to give them a try today. I jumped into my Whip and rolled to Montclair and parked my Whip at a Metered Parking Spot on the street. I street Hiked into TGI ONI Sushi and was Greeted right away!!! I opted to sit at the Sushi Bar where all the Magic happens !! Thanks My Server brought me a Glass of Water and a Menu to Peruse. I ordered a Chirashi Bowl and Soft Shell Crab !!! I met Chris the Owner , he was one of the Sushi Chef's and Sam the other Sushi chef. The Sushi Bar is quite a Happening place !!! My Food Arrived!!! Stopped in here during a recent visit to the east bay. The Chirashi bowl is my go to sushi restaurant item to order. For me, it's the best way to enjoy a variety of sashimi that you can't typically get without ordering individual pieces. Like most chirashi bowls, this one came with two pieces of fish per type of fish, but unlike other bowls I've ordered before, this particular bowl was huge! It was packed with salmon, albacore, hamachi, snapper, yellow tail, shrimp, seaweed salad, and more. It came with a salad and a miso soup. It was so much food that for the first time ever I was unable to finish it all! Everything was fresh, packed with flavor, and the fish cuts were large. Only bummer was that they squirted siracha sauce on part of the fish, and I had to use a napkin to take it off. Not a huge deal but it did mean I lost all the roe because it was placed on the bowl after the siracha sauce. Service was attentive and the atmosphere was casual. We were going to be sat at a table in the middle of the restaurant but asked if we could be seated at the open table next to the window. We were told "No, that is for parties of 3." We have been here more than a dozen times.. I love it each visit. The sushi chef is amazingly skillful. The fish is always FRESH and well presented. All of the rolls are delicious. The bento boxes are also great. We go with our 9 year old grandson. He especially likes the shrimp tempura, sake sashimi, and shrimp naguiri. I love the tofu aguadashi--the tofu is fried perfectly, the dashi broth is exquisite and the bento flakes are on point. A perfect combination. They are great for lunch and dinner.
