What I really love about TGI ONI SUSHI is the service. Staff is very welcoming and attends to your needs. Food is great too i really love their lion king especially the buttery sauce in it. This restaurant in Montclair has recently changed hands and we have been wanting to give this place a try so we stopped in on a Saturday for an early dinner. It is a small place with two floors - very quaint and a nice peaceful environment. We had a wonderful server who was exceptionally friendly and very attentive. We used the call button on the wall only once and she came to help us right away. The 4 stars for this review are for the sashimi dish that we ordered. It was huge and very fresh which consisted of an assortment of hamachi, salmon and tuna ($25). We also had the combination tempura ($16) which was OK - I prefer my tempura batter light and airy and this batter was on the heavier side.....it still tasted good though. Love it here! Good value for well-prepared food. Randy's special roll had generous slices of fish draped over a shrimp tempura roll. Shrimp could have been a little bigger. The katsu donburi was more flavorful than most with generous additions of shiitake mushrooms and seaweed. The decor has been redone and lends a fresh calm ambiance. Relaxing, clean and modern decor. First and foremost the sushi here is as fresh as can be. The rice is tender, not too chewy. And the pickled ginger is spicy, tangy and sharp like it was just made. Tgi Oni has some very interesting rolls I don't see often at other places. I got the Danny Special and the Gang Nam rolls to try - each one was filling enough. The fish is fresh and the flavors are interesting mixtures - one focusing on the tataki sweet and savory sauce and another had spicy pepper plus a tempura crunch. This review is long overdue. We've ordered food from this place a number of times - before Covid, during Covid, and just recently a couple weeks ago. They were good only when they first opened and since then quality had went downhill to the point that they've now lost our business. The last few times we order from them the fish was not fresh. The last time most recently the fish (especially the real crab we paid extra for to have in several of the rolls) was outright stinky and rancid. Never gain. read more

Ordered takeout and their food is amazing!! I got four rolls and recommend all of them. The geisha was a nice surprise since I've never had a roll with nuts in it but the macadamia nuts complimented the spicy tuna so well. I'm a huge hamachi fan so I recommend the hamachi lover to anyone who is the same. The Danny special was also quite new as the outside is tuna tataki which was delicious and the shredded daikon outside is great to eat with the tangy sauce and roll together. The Brian roll gives a great selection of assorted fish so it's definitely a roll meant for everybody. It also seems like a family run business so it's also great to support the local small businesses in the area. The waitresses were very sweet and kind and I'd definitely come back here again and dine in once the shelter in place is lifted since the environment inside is perfect for families and date nights. read more

Third time's a charm? In this case.... HECK YEAH! I have worked in the Montclair Village for a very long time and this is the 3rd time this place is under "new management". My co-worker and I decided to give the new owners a try and I must say, it's thee best so far!! If you've been here before, you'll notice that they've changed the decor a bit, which I LOVE! I feel as if i'm in a cozy restaurant in Japan (hmm no I've never been to Japan! LOL, BUT it's how i imagine it would look/feel). It's a small cozy place, nice decor, vibrant, clean and very welcoming... I love it! Check out my photo and you'll see!! The hostess/waitress is sweet & very attentive as well! They have buzzards at every table you can ring to get her attention if she's in the back... nice feature! We ordered the beef teriyaki and salmon plates .... both absolutely delicious & good portions too!! And for being located in the Village, It's reasonably priced as well, that's always a WIN!! The gyoza was tasty, crunchy and oh so good!! I'm so happy with the changes made here....!! The best Japanese food in the Village for sure, which means i'll be a regular! I don't usually do this, but this place was terrible. I mean inedible terrible. The role I got was tasteless and the tempura was as just a mess. Instead of Panko it had this weird batter on it which just did not work. I'm sorry TGI only sushi but you need to to go back to the drawing board. read more

I ordered some nigiri and a tuna roll from this place last night. The DoorDash delivery was great. Right to my door in under 20 mins. The food was another matter. I order sushi on a regular basis from other restaurants that offer great quality. This was not it. I ordered 2 pieces of maguro nigiri and one tuna on tuna with avocado roll. What I received was poor quality toro (fatty) tuna. Thick pieces it on both the nigiri and the roll. This was near closing time, so I can only guess that they gave me whatever cuts they had left at the end of the day. I tried one piece of the roll, but it was so disgusting I threw everything away. I paid over $40 for a dinner I had to dispose of because it made me want to gag. I will never order from here again. read more

I often wonder about the people who leave one and two-star reviews for a place that gets solid 4's and 5's from everyone else - somebody had a bad day, either them or the restaurant. Under new ownership a few years ago this small sushi restaurant has been serving fresh sushi & great rolls. You can also choose different items from their bento box dinner or lunch, which is nice. We like their teriyaki chicken because the sauce they use is not to sweet & over powering. We also like their spicy tuna rolls. The rolls definitely have a little kick of spice to them. We have always enjoyed our service & the relaxing atmosphere at this little restaurant in Montclair village. Great spot for a quiet date night. read more

So, I put on Pixar's "Soul," and ordered some delivery from Tgi Oni Sushi. I've ordered delivery three times now over these past few months, so my rating is based on their food and delivery; I haven't been inside the restaurant, yet they still get a stellar 5 stars from me. Orders are prepared quickly, and delivered with care. The fish is fresh and so satisfying! They have some great rolls, and the sashimi is perfect. Lots more comfort food on their menu!
