This was our family's first Thailand food experience and I was bit hesitant to try something new, but that apprehension quickly faded! I ordered food from Thai Basil on 10/27 for delivery. First problem is the food took very long to arrive. From the time I ordered online until delivery was about 1.5 hours. When the food arrived, it was cold - not just luke warm, but very cold. Cold fried calamari and duck are very unappetizing. I called the restaurant after the food arrived, but by that time, the restaurant told me that all the managers had gone home and that the kitchen had closed (this was at about 9pm on a Saturday), so there was absolutely nothing they could do. After waiting for approximately 30 minutes for our order to be taken, we were already feeling less than patient. Half of our appetizers came quickly, the rest with our meal. The appetizers were good, but the meal was not. We ordered pad thai, which had a vinegary and fruity flavor. Getting the attention of a the waitstaff was nearly impossible. We had to stand up to request drinks that were ordered and never came. Spicy was spicy and mild was mild. We had a glitch with our order through Yelp but the service was steady, apologetic, and accommodating. One of several Thai restaurants in Ithaca. It's location, right off the Commons, is very convenient. There is on-street parking and a parking garage around the corner. The food is excellent. When we ordered for delivery (through an app), there has been an issue with our orders every time. Miscommunication, due to language barriers, seems to be the problem. That's the only reason for a knock on the full five stars. I recconend eating in the resataurant or ordering and picking up in person. read more

My wife and I have visited the restaurant twice (including last night), and have gotten take-out a few times, and have yet to be disappointed by a dish. Easily the best Thai restaurant in Ithaca. Loved their drunken noodles and somtum salad in particular (and we have tried every version of drunken noodles offered in Ithaca). The Thai iced tea is also excellent. This place seems to have been slow to get the attention of most Ithaca diners, but I have no doubt it will be bustling soon, so visit before the crowd notices. read more

OK, so the food is good here, but THE PORTIONS ARE VERY SMALL. For $30 we got 2 entrees and an appetizer to feed a 21/2 yr old, 5 yr old and 2 women. One had chicken and the other tofu. In the $11 tofu order there were ONLY 4 PIECES OF TOFU. The chicken order fed the kids (again 21/2 and 5) with NONE left. We ended up having to cook more food for ourselves after spending $40 with delivery and tip. WHAT A BUMMER. We usually order from taste of Thai express and have left overs and plenty for all. Good restaurant, pretty similar to Taste of Thai in terms of menu/price range. Drunken Noodles and Yellow Curry were both very good. Yellow curry could have been a little bigger, and the "tofu and vegetables" was really just tofu. Only one waitress working, service was okay. Would give it 3.5 stars if I could. read more

Thai Basil is my favorite Thai restaurant in Ithaca. Their duck red curry is amazing. The duck is crispy, the curry has so much flavor and depth. The presentation is fancy and makes the restaurant a good place to bring visitors. My only complaint is that they use canned pineapple and lychee. They have a lot of seafood on the menu, but be warned, this is Ithaca. All of the seafood I've tried there has been fishy and old. Sticky to the birds and pig for meat. Staff is friendly and the tv playing awkward tourism videos is hilarious. read more

The ambiance is great and the food is excellent. The only problem is there isn't very much of it. The dishes will cost the same as another restaurant's but are roughly half the size. I would give it a moderate rating and would not suggest going here if you are hungry. read more

Went on account of the high reviews only to have a not so good experience. Fish was told not available only to be brought out later. Spring rolls ordered were not brought out. Another fish ordered was also not brought out but charged. All in all the experience was not what I expected it given the high reviews. Also don't get the recommended honey duck ...My son said it tasted like doughnut drippings with duck in it. We all went out for pizza, chicken kebob and crackers after thai food. Terrible experience today! We were in town for my daughter's graduation and had made dinner reservation for 6:00 p.m. At 6:25, I had to go to the bar & ask the waitress to come & take our order. At 7:00p.m, I went back to ask the waitress how long for our appetizers. She told me she will check on it. In the meantime, the guests on table next to us, who were seated after us, were done with their dinner. The waitress came several times to clear the table next to us & seat next guest but avoided eye contact. Finally at 7:05, I went back to bar to inquire about my order. She told me they had only one chef & were very busy. She said she'll go and check. Then the next time we saw her was when she came to take the order for the new guest on the next table. No one bothered to come and check on our table or give explanation. FINALLY we left at 7:15 with no food. Being graduation weekend, all restaurants were packed & obviously we couldn't get a table anywhere else without a reservation. My daughter's graduation dinner turned into a disaster. read more

I was a regular at Thai Basil for the first year I lived in Ithaca. No longer. A few weeks ago, I put in a take out order, and was told it'd be 15-20 minutes. This was a Wednesday at about 5 PM. I make my way over there, pay, and am told it'll still be a few minutes. I'm in a bit of a rush, but I wait. And I wait. And I wait. Probably 25 minutes. I'm then given a bag of food, rush out to my car, and then realize it was not my order. I come back in and tell the server this. Note -- I don't recognize the two servers, so they are probably new. One of them goes back to the kitchen to see what happens, then comes back out and goes behind the counter again, saying nothing to me. Only when the other server asks her what was going on does she mumble something to him about it not being there. I ask for clarification, and the primary server goes back there and comes out with an explanation of how it was never made. He is unsure why. It is very aggravating... but this is not the problem. This is where the problem begins. I then say I need a refund, but the server doesn't know how to process this, and his manager is not in yet. I leave my phone number and say I want them to call and confirm when they've given me my refund. I'm pretty sure I did not hear the word "sorry" said to me at any point I am there. On the way home, we make a quick call to them to follow up, during which the server says something about maybe getting us a voucher. We tell him we'll call back at 7, when the manager is to arrive. The server says something about how that is a busy time for them, so he's not sure the manager will be able to talk to me. We express that that is ridiculous, and that we'll call back, regardless. By 7:30, having heard nothing, I call back. My server friend answers. I ask for the manager. Apparently the manager is out, on a delivery. But the server tells me that he has "good news," that his manager was able to just void the purchase. He thanks me for my "patience." I express something about the vouchers that he had mentioned and ask the manager to call me back, since they have my number. Again: no "sorry," and apparently the manager didn't think it was worth taking the 1 minute to call me. Five days later, I have heard nothing still. I call back during dinner, and the same old server picks up the phone. I ask for the manager. He is... not in. I start explaining why I'm calling, including saying that I think he was the person who had helped me last week, and the server cuts me off and tells me they are busy, and can he take a message. I quickly explain what had happened and that I was still waiting to hear from them, and express that I've been a regular for a year but, at this point, am frankly disinclined to ever go back. Again -- no apologies, nothing. It's been almost two weeks. Guess who hasn't followed up... I'll never go back. Which is unfortunate. I love the food, great location, etc. But the total absence of even an ounce of care from both the manager and the servers (who surely would have shown it had their manager instilled that quality into them) is just ridiculous. Not worth supporting a place that views its customers like that. I'll be taking my addiction to Thai food elsewhere. read more

We were visiting Ithaca and decided to try this highly rates Thai restaurant. It is less stellar than expected. The portions are rather small. The Calamari appetizer had only about 5 - 6 pieces of calamari. The Beef & Cashew Stir-Fry was overcooked and the portion was minuscule. Only the fried rice (a bit too mushy) and the pad thai (the best dish) were more substantial. For the prices they charge, we expect larger portions. We won't go back. read more

Than a lady that had take out came in, they smiled with her (probably a known regular), and she plopped down right next to us waiting for her food. Been here a few times, it's probably the best Thai place behind Sticky Rice in Ithaca. I think they do the best Thai curry in Ithaca, it has a very good richness to it that the other places lack. My friend in particular loves the Basil Duck, and the seafood fried rice also stands out. read more

The place is very nice and peaceful with scenery of Thailand playing on a flat screen TV and soft music. The staff is helpful and attentive. Came here over the 4th of July weekend and was very disappointed. The steamed pork dumpling appetizer was good and came out quickly, but it was downhill from there. The entrees (pad thai and pad see ew) were not good and the service was horrendous. Water was never refilled and we sat with dirty dishes in front of us for 15 minutes trying to flag down a waiter. My daughter and I go here for lunch about two times a month. I live in groton and we look forward to the great food. We are spice wimps though, so my daughter orders her dish without much spice. The first time we ever came here she ordered something that was too spicy for her and they gladly helped by taking it back and killing the spice for us. I tried this place twice, the first time I went in person and the second time I had delivery. My first experience dining at the restaurant was positive: the food was tasty, the service quick and courteous. Since I remembered the good experience, I ordered their food through Ithaca to Go a few nights ago, and my second experience was highly disappointing. First, we got the wrong order, which I guess can happen but is not a great start. Most importantly, the veggies were flavorless and tasted really old. My soup contained some fibers that were not even chewable; the green beans had clearly not been cleaned and the tomato was past its time. The curries tasted ok, but the salad weird: the green papaya was hard and tasted more like cabbage.... I'd be happy go back again in person and give this restaurant another shot; however, I had a feeling they don't put any care in the food they send out for delivery and that's a real shame. read more
