Thai Elephant has a lot of things going for me on why I say it's as good as it gets. For one, and the big one, is that it is in walking distance from my apartment. This may not be attractive to everyone, especially in a locale like the Tri-Cities where pretty much everyone drives everywhere, even when it may be a block or a half-mile away. But for people like me that like a casual in the cool of the evening, and live on or near Clearwater by Edison, this is one restaurant that is a real treat to come to. There is an excellent selection of Thai food, great curry, and very tasty eggplant. You can also try their oriental import of alcoholic beverages, which can be a nice way to end a day. We went for a late lunch and was pleasantly surprised at the quite calm atmosphere. The food was made with obviously fresh vegetables and the meats were nice and lean, not greasy or was is like rubber. They were choice cuts. I observed several customers come and pickup orders. Their curry dishes are well balanced, and royal butterflies are always lightly fried. Some stand out dishes are the Drunken Noodles, Pad Thai, Pumpkin Fried Rice, Panang Curry, Garden Delight, Sizzling Beef, Pad Prik Khing, Garlic & Peppers, and one not on the menu "Ginger Beef" my FAV! Their Chicken Sateh & Coconut Shrimp are also flavorable mentions as well. The friendly and prompt service is exceptional, and the atmosphere is very welcoming, warm and relaxing. I've eaten Thai a few hundred times all over the country. This is not authentic Thai food. I met a date for lunch when it was crowded and just by looking at the food people were eating I could tell it was very poor quality. She advised me not to order, but I tried a bite of what she ate and knew she was correct. If you like imitation Thai cooked by Laotians, like most Tri-Citians do, go here. If you actually have culture and can tell the difference, avoid. Edit: Obviously I didn't choose the restaurant and my date didn't listen to my advice about where to eat. Hidden gem. Went late Sunday evening so business was slow, but the waiter was incredibly attentive and seemed like he could handle 20 more guests. Appetizer platter was tasty with very flavorful coconut shrimp and marinated chicken -- plus the food was not overly greasy or fried too much. Mussaman curry was good with russet-size potatoes and 1" carrots. Evil Jungle Noodle/Peanut Sauce was excellent. The avocado rolls with peanut dipping sauce, refreshing. I got the drunken noodles at the highest heat level, #4. I am a heat fiend. This heat level was good, although I probably would have sought a little higher if it was an option, as i like the heat to be a little painful, lol. Good. Came here for dinner while in town for a conference. Very nice furnishings and service was good. Slight mishap with getting our neighbors spring rolls, but other than that service was fine. We're used to a different style of Thai food (see Our Thai House in Spokane, or Phonthip Thai in North Spokane). So far we haven't found anything that matches those restaurants, and that is what I compare with. They only have a 1-4 spice scale, I ordered a 2 based on this but should have ordered a 3.
