Thai express yet again proves that hole-in-the-wall ethnic restaurants are the best. Do not come here to see beautiful decor or a luxe environment. The food and the service is the star. Thai Express is my favorite Thai place in the area, easily. Anything I have ever had is amazing. Portion sizes are pretty big, if you get a soup or appetizer as well, you will probably be taking home a full meal size of leftovers of your entree (which in my opinion is awesome). Free refills on thai iced tea are great, plus the meals come with a little dessert- ice cream sandwich or a mini cheesecake. I have never had a problem with spice level- i request mild and get it. Service is always great! The woman who typically serves and works the counter is friendly as can be, always happy to see anyone who ventures in. Service with a smile is almost an understatement because she is so genuine about it. Overall, I say to choose this based on value, taste, and service over other thai choices in the area. Way better food than the name of Thai Express might indicate! Top notch Thai food, no question! I got the Drunken Noodle, my wife ordered something by its number, not the name of the dish, so I've forgotten what it was (lol), my sister got a soup dish. Drunken Noodles was amazing! My wife's was very good and she definitely enjoyed it. My sister liked hers as well. The Thai tea is so good, and they have free refills (how amazing!). They also bring out a spring roll before the main dish, which was steaming-hot and tasty. On top of all this you get an ice cream sandwich bite or cheesecake bite, plus fortune cookie, and after-dinner mints. All this (aside from the Thai tea) is included in the price for the meal, which is already very reasonable. I've easily paid more for lesser Thai and lesser portions. Please be aware--- they use the 1-10 heat scale, but not the one that seems more common in MI - a legit Thai heat scale. I got a 4, and I'd say it was even a touch spicier than a 4 in AZ! Update: My parents stop coming here a year ago. There are two waitresses. One is nice and one clearly is not. We've been here enough times to know that this waitress is not nice. Recently, they went back because like I said, the food is delicious. We always neat up the table when we are done eating. The mean waitress came and took their plates and my mom trying to be helpful and hand her another plate and the waitress replied, "I only have two hands". Ugh. Doesn't appear much on the outside and it is tucked back into a strip mall a ways off the main road! But it is worth the venture! Their food is amazing! One of my all time favorites is massaman curry, with coconut sauce YUM! I have been to Thailand and have been to a traditional Thai cooking class and their food is definitely close! My husband got the curry pad Thai at a 7 spice and it was very spicy! He loved it because he favors Indian cuisine but I prefer the traditional pad Thai! We also got the chicken satay which the chicken was good but not the best I have had it was the sauces that made it, a peanut and sweet and sour sauce! Amazing experience here! Would've never thought this place would be so good. I got the chicken massaman bowl and I can't wait to go back. This was my first experience with Thai food and all I can say is "WOW"! From the point you step into the restaurant you are the boss. The kitchen staff loves to serve you, and has a genuine love for their customers. Lunch began with a simple salad that had a light, sweet dressing. The spring roll was hot from the frier with a crunchy, thin shell. For the main course I went with drunken noodles with chicken and beef (n3) and a spicy level of three. I was only able to eat 2/3 of my plate, but was really wanting to push the rest in. As an added bonus, you get either a piece of cheese cake or ice cream after the meal. I took the cheesecake to go. Service took a while to take my order and the table that came in after ordered first. They only offer the curry noodles as a dinner portion so I went with that. Ordered medium which was just enough to get a little sweat going for me. Also ordered combo protein which included chicken, pork and tofu. Curry was a little on the watery side, I like thicker sauces. Included was a spring roll app and for dessert your choice of bite size cheesecake or an ice cream sandwich. This was a nice touch. Lunch menu I went with peanut curry, noodles instead of rice and chicken. Portion size was ok for the price, but wasn't filling for me. My husband and I just tried this place for the first time... and we LOVED it!! Both servers were very friendly, polite, attentive, and cheerful. They provided a traditional menu, as well as a picture menu with photos of everything on the menu, which I thought was awesome! In fact, I normally order the same thing for my first time at every Thai restaurant, and judge based on that. I was intrigued, however, by the description of the Massaman Curry (had never had peanuts with pineapple!), and the photo menu made me decide to give it a shot... I am so glad I did!! From the first bite, I was hooked (and visibly excited). Each entree comes with a spring roll and dipping sauce. We also tried the crab rangoons and this had the most cream cheese of any we've had. Lastly, we tried the Tom Yum soup with beef at spice level 5 (they run 1 to 10). Very good! Again, I absolutely loved the Massaman Curry! Even after I was full, I kept drinking small spoonfuls of the flavorful sauce. My husband had an order of pad thai, and though it was different than any other pad thai I've had (or remember from my time in Thailand), we still enjoyed it. Lastly, they give you several dessert options with your entree. He had a bite-size piece of cheese cake and I had an ice cream sandwich. I can't remember the other options, but how nice of them to include dessert?!?! Overall, we were thrilled with the service (I should also mention that our water glasses were never empty, all of our questions were answered kindly, and we didn't wait long for to-go boxes) and really enjoyed the flavor of our food! We'll be back, and I would recommend this place to anyone! :) The only potential change I'd make is the music. The decor displays beautiful photos of Thailand, but the music playing tonight was Top 40 pop. I'd rather hear Thai music or K-Pop personally. I do like their new location in the plaza stretched behind the original location. It has much more space and is a step up aesthetic wise from the last location just in front of it. Last week I stopped by for take out. The spring roll that comes with your meal was amazing and the Crab Rangoon was crisp, stuffed and delish! I ordered pad thai curry but they accidentally made regular pad thai. When I noticed this and called to let them know they promptly offered to refund me or make another one. I went back and they had my correct order hot and ready for me and they were super nice and apologetic. Both pad thai versions were meh..on the dryer side and lacked a lot of flavor.. we also ordered peanut curry with chicken which was actually pretty good. They don't skimp on the sauce or portions! This place offers nearly authentic food of from Thailand with a twist of Americanization. We have been doing to this place for a couple of years and it's one of the best one in the area. Their lunch prices are very reasonable proportional to the food they serve. Great service is always expected. Try pad Thai and spring rolls. Those are the dishes we always get and delicious as usual. They have moved to a different location which is right across from the old one. The inner decors is immense. It's very spacious now. Yay, we will have booths and more privacy. I have eaten here many times before and have always been impressed until this visit. We went in around 1:30 for lunch. Ordered fresh spring rolls and pot stickers for appetizers and they were both good. My son ordered Pad Thai with beef, and I ordered Waterfall Beef. Mine was just ok, but the Pad Thai was awful. It was almost gray, looked slimy, and had a strong metallic taste that was borderline chemical tasting. I couldn't distinguish the bean sprouts from the noodles, and the egg was almost neon colored. My son ate a few bites before telling me about the taste, and I tried it to make sure he wasn't exaggerating. I couldn't swallow it. The waitress was solo and didn't come to check on us as she was busy. We just paid and left. My son vomited shortly after we left. I hope this was an isolated incident, but I don't think I will be back. read more

Peanut Curry- Spice level 3 - Lots of vegetables (Carrots and Broccoli) huge portions and loads of protein (Chicken) Mild peanut flavor, I am going to ask for crushed peanuts in it next time! Spring Roll- Crispy and flaky outside with a punch of flavor on the inside! Crab Cheese- Large size and perfectly cooked. Crunchy outer layer and creamy flavorful filling. I will say there wasn't much of a crab flavor which I enjoy. The dipping sauce though, WOW, delicious!! Light and sweet with a mild tang for sour. Light in heat which makes it perfect for anyone rather they have a spice sensitivity or not. I did not get to experience the customer service this time around due to this meal being a take-out order and my fiancé had brought it to me for dinner, I will say, with the quality and quantity of food, I would hope that the customer service is comparable! read more

Found this place through a Yelp search. This was our first time eating here and we did take out. We will definitely be back. The food was amazing, we ordered Ce Ew and thai curry. Definitely some of the best thai food I have had. We also ordered sticky rice. After placing the order, I received a call from the restaurant telling me that they were out of sticky rice and asked what I wanted instead. Which was very kind. When the food arrived we were in for another treat as they included a free dessert due to being out of sticky rice. I'm was visiting from NJ. I saw this place had 4.5 stars. I ordered the Beef Pad Thai which is usual safe choice. However, I was a little displeased with what I received. By the looks it looks like normal Beef Pad Thai but the taste and smell threw me way off. It was definitely not what I'm used to. I ate 2-3 bites and I couldn't do more. The food was awesome! I'm extremely picky when it comes to Thai food b/c I'm Thai myself so it is hard to compare to mom's cooking. And I'm very picky but am always curious to try the pad thai at every Thai restaurant I visit; and this place met my expectations. The taste was right on. A little too sweet for my taste but the savory aspect definitely balanced that out. Mine was hot, spicy, and a little tangy that tingled every part of my palate. The ground peanuts on the side definitely added a slight texture that is desired in every pad thai. It was very affordable, delicious, and very authentic. We visit Grand Rapids a few times every month for work, and at times we stay in town to grab some grub. Surprise, surprise we were craving Thai food so I whipped out my phone and looked up the nearest restaurant. We ordered springrolls, which were pretty good. The veggies inside were fresh and crisp, which is always a huge plus. For our entrees I strayed from my usual path of curries because I felt like pad thai, and my husband went for the pad cashew. Every now and then he gets a veggie kick and wants something with a ton of veggies in it, rather than a pad see ewe (with just broccoli) or kow pad. Both were actually pretty good, but nothing to write home about. The pad thai seemed a little sweet for my taste, while at the other time the pad cashew was lacking something. Perhaps it was lacking the sweetness that was instead on my plate, or some savory-ness - either way, I could not quite put my finger on it but something semed 'off'. I was a little sad to be honest, because I was very hungry and had high hopes because of the ratings on Yelp. We might be back, eventhough the restaurant was small and kinda dingy (and we have experienced much better Thai food elsewhere). We are just in the GR area too often, which means it is inevitable for us to not be craving thai food one time or another. I do not really like leaving reviews after just one visit (unless it stood out one way or the other), but am willing to try this place again and hopefully edit my review into the four star range.
