Thai chef is a little gem of a restaurant that my family has enjoyed for as long as it's been there. It's family owned, close to home, and never disappoints! Honestly, anything you get will be delicious. Even their soups of the day are bomb! Their chicken satay is a good appetizer, there is plenty of choices on the menu and even customized menu to create your own, this is great for those that want a very particular dish. For a while Thai Chef was my fav Thai place especially if I was NE near Knapp's Corner. Nice decor. Clean appearance. Service good but don't expect chat if alone. Appears family owned. Stopped 9/18/2025, disappointed, realized why I stopped going. Flavors, menu variety still very good but the portions are diet size small. Complimentary ckn broth soup comes with lunch but you get a bare 1/2 C, w less than tblsp of fine dice onion, celery, pinch cheyenne pepper so very cheap to make, nothing really Thai. My Entree was Basil Ckn Curry $14 w ckn breast was very small portion. Maybe 4 oz chicken. Tasted great but would help if more generous with sauce as seasonings are in the sauce, nice to soak into the 1 cup of plain rice. No extra's, no tea, nothing else. Running errands in this part of town is kind of fun because there are several restaurants in the area. Nate and I stopped by Thai Chef recently while waiting "in line" for the Xfinity store next door. This was our first time dining in, and I liked the atmosphere and cozy setting. The employee working was super friendly and helpful. A nice surprise was that they give you a complimentary cup of soup of the day for dine-in customers during lunch hours. The soup we got was a spicy celery soup, which was clean-tasting, comforting, and slightly spicy. For lunch, we ordered the crab wontons, peanut curry noodles with chicken, and drunken noodles with chicken. Our food came out quickly and was super hot! We both got medium spice level, which was perfect. I could've gone one level spicier but it was enjoyable. Both of the dishes were super saucy, saucier than most other Thai restaurants I've been to. Great for me, because I love a saucy dish! I found the drunken noodles to be pretty salty, but still delicious. The chicken was not really my favorite as it tasted reheated. Solid Thai food! They have great soup options, and the soup they start you off with was great! It was citrusy, spicy, and delicious. The rest of the food followed suit. My noodle dish (sorry I can't remember the names) was amazing, it had generous portions of shrimp and chicken. That dish alone was worth a trip back. Thai Chef is the best Thai in GR. It has always been in the top, but they're really in a class of their own. The very popular Thai place on Leonard near Ball has changed owners and menu selection which has led me back to Thai Chef more often- and I'm not mad about it. Dining in is always a nice experience- it's a quaint space and the staff are consistently pleasant. Thai Chef does not offer delivery through any services, but I promise it's worth your drive for take-out. Everything I've ordered is fresh and flavorful. I appreciate that their vegetables still have a little crunch and aren't just a mushy afterthought. Their spice levels are legit, in that a medium is actually a medium and perfectly spicy. I highly recommend the Peanut Curry Noodle, Yellow Curry Fried Rice, Drunken Noodle, and Mama's Noodle Soup. They have great Crab Rangoon as well! read more

Hidden and tucked away off Beltline and Knapp. I am a Thai food aficionado and let me tell you this is a quick 2nd favourite place with being in actual Thailand. I ordered the chicken pad Thai and it's was good. Nothing to exactly blow my mind but definitely better that others I've had here in Grand Rapids. I also ordered the Peanut Curry Pad Thai and OH MY!!! my tastebuds were having a party. The Flavour was robust and explosive. AMAZING! Definitely ordering this one again. I ordered the Tom Kha soup and it's an 8/10. A little watery so I added some salt and sugar and it really brought the flavor together. This soup is what I sometimes use to measure the quality of a place since they are my go to. In conclusion, food was too yummy to take a picture so I'm sorry. I WILL BE MAKING THIS MY GO TO FOR THAI. I gave it 4/5 stars only because I couldn't do a 4.5/5 cause I really wish they had more desserts SPECIFICALLY sweet mango sticky rice. read more

About 1pm, I ordered lunch from this establishment. I asked if they had a lunch menu, they said NO, only one size. I spent $29.05 for a beef/shrimp fried rice and crab rangoons. Ok, this will buy two lunches. Well, the portion size of the fried rice was a GRAVE disappointment and a rip off!! It was placed in a take out container, which further speaks to the size. I spoke to staff about the small serving and how I felt cheated she said their rice portions are always 1oz. I said I'd never visit again, and she walked away as to say "I DON'T CARE". Not once did she try to satisfy this customer. I got home to discover the rangoons were over cooked. I understand inflation, but this is robbing your customers. DON'T PATRONIZE this establishment unless you have money to burn, and you're okay with not getting what you paid for! read more

We don't hand out 5* ratings often, but we really enjoyed our take out meal from Thai Chef recently. Two of us ordered the chicken Pad Thai (mine with a higher level of spice) and one from our group ordered Drunken Noodle. We all thought the meal was very good - especially for take out! My Pad Thai was perfect. The medium spice was spot on with just the right amount of zip. Nailed it. The noodles and bean sprouts were excellent. Everything put together very nicely. We've been hunting for Grand Rapid's best chicken pad thai. We've tried a lot of places. Did we just find it? The person having the drunken noodle gave it a 4.5*. Today was a day that our family will remember. We have a special needs nonverbal child who get overstimulated easily. We so badly just wanted to get lunch and unfortunately my son just wasn't having it. He started screaming at the top of his lungs and we had to walk out. Apologizing over and over to everyone in there. While we had time to settle down we decided to get take out. I walked back in, embarrassed because we are usually shunned in these circumstances, to get a menu. The server was so wonderful and respectful, and seemed happy we decided to order take out. I go out to the car to wait for it to be done and as my friend goes in to get our food, the server standing there with a smile on his face tells her that our lunch was taken care of and paid for. All I can say is thank you. Thank you to whoever it was. Thank you to the staff. Thank you for not making us feel like a nuisance. Very rarely are we treated with understanding in these situations. I ordered via Doordash, and everything was promptly delivered, and still hot! I had the masamun curry with chicken, which came with a side of rice, and a Thai iced tea. The curry was delicious, with giant chunks of potato, as well as onions, peas, carrots, and cashews. The flavors all blended so well together. The perfect sweet and savory combo. I wish there was a tiny bit more chicken, but that's the only flaw I can think of. There was enough rice for one serving, but the entree container was packed so tightly with food that I'll be eating it again tomorrow! The only downside I can think of--at least from ordering via app--is that I didn't get to pick my spice level, so I'm assuming my dish was mild? This place however, is an exception! Our server actually asked us how spicy we would want it to be and the food was perfectly prepared to our liking. I've been eating here for a whole now and it's become my new go-to takeout spot as it's near my job. It's def. been holding me over during quarantine. Still not my fav Thai place ever, still pretty average to me, but I've yet to have a bad meal either. Their Pad Thai isn't my fav either, lacks flavor/quite bland, so I highly recommend choosing their Curry Pad Thai instead. I was in Grand Rapids over the weekend to see a couple of bands at Elevation, curiously located in the basement of another concert venue. Are they, like, being ironic or something? Anyways, after driving for 2 and a half hours, I pulled off 96 into downtown Grapids. My buddy Dave and I agreed some Thai food would totally hit the spot, so I intoned "Thai food near me" into this here smartphone I'm now poking with my fingers. To my surprise the first place that popped up was about 6 miles away and a hop back on the e-way. But it was well rated so I turned my truck around and we headed back east. I was surprised again to find Thai Chef is in a strip mall, down the road from the famous Meijer gardens, who, like seemingly every other museum/cultural institution have to close at 5 on a Saturday so I miss them, cause reasons. We decided not to get too judgmental about Thai Chef's location, and I'm glad we didn't cause it was really damn good. I forget what Dave had, but my Basil fried rice was just bursting with flavor. Like, it made me realize I'm in kind of a rut with my once beloved Go! Sy Thai, and it no longer packs the punch it once did. Maybe I need to kick up my spice level at GST to medium plus or hot cause the medium at Thai Chef was no joke and I liked it. It's been awhile since I killed more than one glass of water with my Thai. It was just spice either. There was sweetness and distinct flavors within the dish. Service was great. I've read about problems on here but ours was fine. Really, the only thing that keeps me from giving TC 5 stars was that the portions weren't all that great. I like to get enough for a good snack later. Dave cleaned his plate, and I came within about three bites and probably could've if I set my mind to it. Just as well since we were on the road and I never even saw any homeless people to give leftovers to, but a word to the wise if you're looking for bang for your buck. read more

Ordered "mamas spicy noodle soup" for take out today (during COVID-19) and I am SO happy I did. It was one of the best soups I've ever had, with " true"tasty spice (flavorful, not just sriracha) and came in a large reusable container. I ordered the vegetarian option which came with mushrooms, snap peas, carrots and water chestnuts along with the noodles and green onions, and the lettuce and peanuts. They asked me my spice level and I said "medium" however I could have gone for even more spice. There is a reason this soup is so well known, it was amazing! I'm not ashamed to say I ate the whole thing in one sitting. For less than 8 dollars, and supporting a small business during this crazy time, it was totally worth it. read more

I didn't expect much from the look of the plaza-fronted restaurant, but I've been pleasantly surprised. We enjoyed the Tom Kha soup to start, followed by peanut curry, mang gaeng keaw warn noodle. Also ordered the dirty pad Thai as a Barometer dish. Barometer reads: just right on the pad Thai...so we were even more happy when the mang noodles tasted out of this world! We will order them a little spicier next time, but they were extra tasty at the mild spice level anyway. The peanut curry was also very well done. We wanted to bring home leftovers, but couldn't help but eat every last morsel... contemplated asking for side order of rice to help sop up the last of the sauce from each delicious dish. We will be back, order in and tell our good friends about this place! Also, I would like to put a curse on the folks that are stealing the toilet paper and supplies from their restrooms.... it's hard to run a small business! Tried this for take out about a month ago and was somewhat doubtful at first due to a few reviews. Food was ready within 15-20 minutes as promised. We tried the Pad Thai (Chicken) and the Drunken Noodles (Beef). Both dishes was amazing! We've had a few other Thai places around town and have to say that this place does a pretty good job. Both take out dishes were mouth watering and hit the spot. The inside is pretty small and we tried to call (with a busy line) a few times, but eventually got through. Wish they had an online ordering system or something to help simplify the process for takeout (not a big deal, but a few other places around town have this and it really makes it simple).
