We have been on the hunt for a classic American-Chinese option our favorite has gone downhill. We stopped in for dinner on a Sunday and had a great dinner. It was everything we were craving and the service was great. The dining area was very clean and the menu was large. When you walk in, you get a table with menus, then you order at the bar and take a number to your table, then you bring your number up to the bar to pay when you're done. The service was very quick as well. The dining room was pretty busy and takeout orders were constant. Our meals included rice, soup, and our choice of either an egg roll or 2 cheese rangoons. Firstly, what a crazy name to have! I think the name is a cultural difference because of how current vernacular but still cool to go to. Anyway, the food here was so good! My friends and I visited for an event in GR, and we found this on Yelp. Very glad we came to check it out! The food was so good and affordable. We chose to do family style at our different tables so we had a great spread of food. The spices were great in the food and I was so excited to take food home too! Also, they have a full bar, so if you would like to drink there, it's an option too! We didn't drink there but we did get the Vietnamese coffee and they brewed it fresh! It was so good! I came here after seeing so many rave reviews on Yelp! First thing I noticed is it is very small and simple yet still gives a semi elegant vibe giving 3 stars for ambiance. Service was interesting. They seated us then gave us a menu, took our drink orders without giving us an opportunity to look at what they offered then said to order at the counter when ready. I put our order in then took a number to my table that I would need to take back to the counter to pay. This is where I was a bit disappointed. There weren't very many people in the restaurant and there were 3 servers in a tiny place that could have provided table service. They did serve the food but overall I'd say the service is mediocre, 3 stars. Cleanliness gains 4 stars as there were multiple clean tables but we were seated at a dirty one that was wiped off after we sat down. Other than that it appeared to be very clean. Food quality and freshness. I do think the food was very good but honestly it wasn't anything special. With so many reviews saying they're the best Chinese in GR I think I had expectations for something special but it was just average. I have passed this spot a couple times and never thought to try until recently. I have been on the hunt for some good Chinese styled dumplings and I think this one hit the spot! I stopped in for lunch and was expecting a super small, hole in the wall, type of Chinese restaurant but being in the heart of EGR, I should have known it was a bit bigger. To my surprise, they even had a full bar! Not super rare in any Asian restaurants so I was very happy to see that as an option. I ordered the lunch special Lo Mein and my boyfriend go the lunch special Orange Chicken. Both came with soup (hot and sour or egg drop), an eggroll and 2 crab rangoon. Everything was so good and surprisingly not super greasy! You can choose either white or fried rice with the lunch special as well, but we got white rice so I didn't get a chance to try the fried rice. The dumplings were really good and all the sauces provided just added to the flavor. Not overwhelming, not too doughy, and the flavor of the inside was great! I visit Grand Rapids quite often for work and each time I visit I try at least one new restaurant. I found this place via yelp and thank goodness I gave it a shot because it was so delicious. This is a family run business which is a bonus for me. The person I believe is the owner was so nice and prompt with greeting me. The dining area as bright and clean. Lots of 4 top tables. The portions were big and it all seemed very fresh and made when ordered. The egg drop soup was unique in that it had baby shrimp, mushrooms, peas, and carrots in it which I don't think I've had in any other egg drop soup. I like it and would get it again for sure. The egg roll and crab cheese pieces were very flavorful and crispy. The orange chicken was perfectly crispy and saucy as well. They say it's spicy but I did not pick up any spice with mine. 10/10 would recommend. read more

I decided to try a new place for Chinese food and chose this restaurant. I ordered the beef lo mein and crab cheese, but unfortunately, I was very disappointed. When I arrived, they couldn't find my phone order, which made me think they may have given it to someone else. They remade it in about 5-10 minutes, but that made me skeptical about the quality. When I got home and opened the food, I found there was hardly any beef, just a large amount of bland noodles with little to no seasoning and very few vegetables. The crab cheese tasted like it had been made hours earlier and just refried for my order. To top it off, even the fortune cookie was stale -- something I didn't even know was possible. Really enjoyed our visit. Food was quite delicious and fresh. We had a curry chicken dish and one of the classic Chinese chicken dishes. Both came with a generous serving of steamed rice. My only comment is the odd process where you need to order your food at the bar/counter. It didn't ruin the evening but it certainly impacted the sense that you are relaxing in a restaurant. By ordering at the bar, it's confusing, for example, will there be any service during our dinner or do we have to go up to the bar again if we need something or if we want to order something additional? Went out for dinner here with some friends, I love eating here. I had the Singapore Noodles, made with chicken, vermicelli and curry. It has a nice bite. I also had a Tsing Tao beer. My wife had Mongolian Beef which she enjoyed. Our guests had Cashew Chicken and Chinese Vegetables with scallops. Everyone enjoyed their meals. The family that runs this restaurant are very nice and welcoming. I suppose they are short handed because you order at the bar and they bring your food to your table. The seasame chicken was good but I would order the Mongolian beef before the chicken. The fried rice was full of flavor. The chicken Lomein was another favorite of mine. I ate it alll!! The meals are advertised as $25 but they charge fees on top of fees and extra fees until you're out an extra $10-15 more than asking price per meal. I am so impressed with this place! We got a large to-go order, but sat at the bar for a drink while we waited, and watched the friendliness of the staff and owners. Once we got home, it was evident that great care was taken with the quality of the food, even down to not putting sauce onto the sweet & sour shrimp so that it wouldn't get soggy. Sesame chicken was good however it was a little dry. The steamed and fried dumplings were good yet. Dumplings skins were thick and the meat was kind of dense but overall the taste was good. The best Chinese food in GR hands down. You seriously cannot go wrong with anything you order. It's a small place with a bar for your Tsing Tao needs. The hot and sour soup is more peppery than other places but in a good way. The sizzling rice soup is salty with poppy rice and crunch vegetables. The egg drop soup has more than just eggs with mushrooms and carrots. Their egg rolls are less cabbage and more pork and chicken and have an amazing flavor. Their spicy wontons are slippery and covered in a spicy sauce that has just enough heat. The entrees I recommend are the Singapore noodles, princess pork, Szechwan pork, and pad Thai but you cannot go wrong with anything. The fried rice is also delicious and not super oily like some other places. This place is our go to and the staff and owner are all super friendly. read more

This is a take out review. Let me start out by saying except for pizza, I'm not a take out guy. During these trying times with restaurants closed for dining in, we thought we'd give Gaslight Kitchen a try. We first went there a couple of weeks ago and loved everything about our experience. The food and service was outstanding. Happy to report that there is no difference with take out. Our order was well packed and still warm and fantastically wonderful when we got home 15 minutes later. None of us know how long we will be impacted by COVID-19. Some goods, some meh. We have not eaten at the restaurant yet, only take out, but the restaurant is always packed. The bali bali beef is a must - sweet, savory, chewy, falls off the skewer so easily. The general tso's is so good- massive chunks of chicken, perfectly sauced (4/10 spice level) . Exactly what you want in that dish. I tried only 1 bite of the hunan chicken as it was ordered at a higher spice level than I prefer (6/10)- was spicy but I could have easily eaten it and I am not a spice person. My husband said it wasn't spicy for him so he will need to order a higher number. The princess chicken was ordered as is (2/10 spice level). It was good but I wish it had a little more flavor. Not pictured- egg roll, husband said it was the best he has ever had- not excessively breaded and so much flavor- another must. Finally, the major meh- crab cheese. Really not worth it in my opinion. Barely any crab in it and not even much cream cheese. We will order a different app instead next time. read more

Today was one of many takeout orders and my husband was very satisfied with how quickly the process was. We called the order in and within a half hour it was ready for curbside pickup! This was a great relief as we were quite hungry! I ordered the chicken and pea pods - it was really good but not quite as flavorful as expected; pretty mild brown sauce. I ordered take out from this restaurant so I can not speak for the service that you will receive if you choose to dine in. However, I received exceptional service on the phone while ordering my food. The menu was a little confusing so she helped me order just what I was looking for. She was very patient which is not common for most restaurants taking orders over the phone. As for the food, we ordered the Kung pao chicken and the Mongolian beef. The Kung Pao chicken was ok but I wouldn't say that we would order it again. The chicken was cooked well but it didn't have the most flavor. Thanks he Mongolian beef was very good. They had quality beef strips with their Mongolian beef sauce and I would definitely order it again. The inside of the restaurant was clean and well kept. There were multiple couples seated for dine-in and it looks like the perfect spot for date night if your balling on a budget, but want something nicer than Panda Express. They also had a full bar that I'm sure they have some fun drinks. For the two meals and two egg rolls we paid $34 which is a decent price for a Chinese restaurant in gaslight village. read more
