I've been here a few times and each time it seemed like service was a bit slower, even though it wasn't that busy. Not sure if they are training in new waiters/waitresses or what, but it's weird that it takes so long if we all just order pho? Thai food taste alright, nothing outstanding. Thai Garden is always a solid choice. However, the last time I went service was horrible. No one came to greet our table. After 20 min or so one of us had to go to the register to get their attention. Then normally they are pretty fast with bringing out the food but this time it took a while. We ordered pho mostly and she forgot to bring the fixing/sauces to the table. Also, once our food was delivered she did not come back to check on us. This restaurant is a hidden gem in a very unassuming St Paul neighborhood. My wife and I went by the reviews for a lunch on a weekend and the place was a small and quiet place. We were the first to reach there for a lunch and felt like we booked out the place :D We experienced the fastest service ever as the coconut soup, veg roll and the chilli paste fried rice were served in a flash, as if they knew what were going to order. The Pad Thai was excellent. Just the right amount of spice with luscious noodles. The fried tofu was crispy with a tangy, sweet sauce. Thai Garden currently has dine in, carry out, and outdoor seating. We ordered carry out, but ended up taking a seat outside. We ordered online about twenty minutes before we arrived. When we got in, she told us the chef was just finishing our order, but when she went to the back to talk to him, it was clear that he hadn't seen or started the order. We could hear them yelling at each other from the dining room for a while, and the only couple that was currently dining in quickly left. The food was ready pretty quickly despite the mix up. We weren't in a hurry, so really didn't mind waiting, but it was uncomfortable to overhear all of the yelling. We ended up sitting at one of the outdoor tables, and the woman who had been at the counter did come out to offer us water, which was unexpected and thoughtful. I got the lemongrass stir fry with tofu medium and my partner got the drunken noodles with mock duck spicy. Neither dish was very spicy, and mine was pretty salty. The drunken noodles had a nice flavor, but there was very little mock duck in it. It might have been a pretty off day; it seemed like they were stressed out when we were there. But it wasn't a great experience, and I probably wouldn't return considering how many great restaurants there are in the cities. I did appreciate that they had lots of vegan options, although I was a little bit put off that there is a $2 up charge if you request that a dish is made vegan. I don't mind if they don't clean the grill or pan between every dish, so long as there aren't non vegan ingredients that the dish is made with, so this seems excessive to me. read more

Hands down the best Thai food in the entire Twin Cities. Most curries can be made vegetarian/vegan, and the ones that can't can be substitutes with very creative alternatives. On a couple occasions the chef has actually come over to ask us what our food restrictions are and to explain what kind of vegetarian dishes he can make. I would never have guessed this place was good. I've drove by it multiple of times and it didn't occur to me to try this place. I came here with a friend on a whim and I'm glad we discovered this restaurant. Parking is in the back of the building as soon as you turn into the restaurant. We arrived around 5:30 pm; it was a bit slow-- not a lot of people in the restaurant so we were seated right away. The service was great (Joshua, hopefully I got his name right!) We also got to meet and talk to the chef/ owner of the restaurant. It was awesome to talk to both Joshua and the owner of the restaurant-- to hear their story. The owner not only talked to us, but he talked to the other people (seated right next to us) and asked how their meal was and if there's anything he can do for them. I ordered the fried rice chili pepper (hopefully I got it right!) I was a bit hesitant because there wasn't any pictures, but after reading what was in the dish I decided to take a leap and order it. I was not disappointed! It was so DELICIOUS! The spice level was mild, and it was perfect!!! Next time I'll make it a bit spicier just because I do like spicy food too. In addition to the fried rice, I order the Thai egg roll (chicken). I expected the egg roll to be a bit bigger but, it's okay. Everything that we've ordered today was amazingly delicious! I really enjoyed my first Pho experience EVER at Thai Garden recently. Came in on a Friday night, expecting a crowd. The place was practically empty. One other couple of people there. Didnt expect much. The Pho3 was delicious. Good broth, tasty meat and veggies. The sweet fried rice was ok. Their shrimp weren't the freshest. I forgot where I was when I ordered. Next time I would try another, maybe meat, for sure. The young lady who waited on us was super nice. She helped us determine if our walk back to our hotel was doable, and suggested where to stop for ice cream when we mentioned we wanted some. I ordered a Thai salad - thingy sliced steak, fresh cabbage, mouthwatering Thai sweet paste, chili flakes. My hubby ordered Pad Cashew and it was an absolute delight - sautéed broccoli , cauliflower, cabbage, shrimp and of course a ton of cashews. I love all the simple but eclectic decorations inside. I like that they like to be a little sparkly, they don't overdo it. Overdoing it can hurt my eyes, unless it's Lady Gaga's dress. This restaurant feels homely for me. I feel relaxed when I'm in there. I don't feel like I'm rushed to leave too quickly, even though I know I shouldn't be anywhere too long, no matter what. The food quality is the only reason why I brought the star rating from five to four. It can be a little too spicy at times. I've had moments when I asked them to make the food less spicy, and they spiced it up anyway. It's not anything that'll scare me away because the quality is terrific, and the employees mean well. The people there are always friendly. I feel like they genuinely care about their customers and wanting them to feel happy. To sum it up, bring down the spices, and it'll be perfect. Food arrives quickly and everyone is smiling and kind. I think it's in an old Arby's or Hardee's building but there's plants and whatnot in the dining room. Comfortable enough. My sisters and I stopped in for the first time. At first I was concerned that maybe my food won't be that good because it took a while to come out, BUT seriously it is definitely worth the wait. The food there is DELICIOUS. Plus it was a GOOD thing it took a while so my sisters and I had the chance to catch up. Food is at an affordable price, which is a PLUS! Four of us were here on a Friday evening around 6:15, and it was full. I understand why! The food was delicious, presented well, and very reasonably priced. The atmosphere was pleasant and attractive, and even though all the tables were full, we could still enjoy conversation. I had Pho #3, which was wonderful and generously portioned, my husband had his go-to noodle salad with beef, and chicken eggrolls, so both of our dinners were quite Vietnamese, and we split a yummy green tea ice cream for dessert. I heard a lot about Thai Garden in the vegan facebook groups. Some mixed reviews, but I wanted to try it myself. There's a parking lot in back of the building. So that's super nice and convenient. The place is nice and clean inside. Restrooms were clean. I asked if the Pad Thai could be made vegan, and the waitress said yes, but anything vegan or gluten free there is a $2 extra charge. We were ok with that and ordered vegan pad thai and my GF ordered the vegan tom yum soup. The tom yum soup came out first. I don't generally order this dish, so I'm not sure how it's supposed to taste. It was very sour. I didn't really enjoy it. My friend who usually orders this kind of soup said it was a bit more sour than usual, and didn't have the usual veggies she usually gets at other places. Then the pad thai dish came out. I was super excited. I started to mix the bean sprouts into the dish - since I like them softened. Then I noticed something that looked like eggs. I thought maybe it was cabbage, but pad thai usually doesn't have cabbage. So I had my friend try it to confirm (she's not vegan, just ordering vegan so we could share dishes). She said it was eggs. I called the waitress over and told her there were eggs in the dish and it was supposed to be vegan - meaning no eggs or meat. She said she put vegan on the ticket. The chef must have not seen it. I asked her to make another dish with no eggs (but now I'm super nervous). I hope that the final dish I got was indeed vegan. It was good. I liked the sauce. I asked for some cilantro and tossed that in. It was good. I would have given this spot a 4 star rating, but took away one star for the mix up. Because now I couldn't eat in peace. I hoped with all my might that all the dishes were indeed vegan. I can't say that I would go again, but like I said I did enjoy the pad thai sauce. It wasn't amazing that I have to go again, but it WAS good. I wouldn't go because I'm afraid of having a messed up order again. I understand people make mistakes, but it'll be a while before I try this place again. Also, probably because I don't like that close. Maybe if I lived closer, I might be willing to give it another try. The best thing about this place is the welcoming & warm owners & staff. The chef makes sure to greet each guest & asks our opinion about the meals. The gingseng coffee was delicious & my favorite thing. The hot tea is a Jasmine flavor & comes out in a large glass pot so you can steep it longer or less depending on how strong you prefer the tea. The Thai papaya salad with medium heat definitely has a powerful spicy kick! I would suggest normal people to stay away for your own safety! For advanced spice eaters, it was just the perfect heat level. Unfortunately I would have enjoyed the salad better if it were actually truly Thai style. There was too much crab sauce, not enough lime, tamarind, & missing the other amazing colorful flavors that I love about true Thai style papaya salad. Sad to say this is not their best dish. This place is a hidden jewel! After stopping at 2 other Thai restaurants on University Avenue last night, we spotted this place tucked in next to a liquor store, and to my extreme delight I realized it's the place I've been trying to find for years, having been here many years ago when it was under different ownership and remembering the food as being wonderful. The place was immaculately clean and beautifully decorated, and we were the only guests at 7:30 pm on a Friday. This is most likely because of the awkward location and how hard it is to stand out on University where the restaurants are densely packed in. We were greeted by a lovely woman and smiling chef, given the perfect corner table next to the window, and 2 waters as we perused the menu. The menu is considerable, but all your favorites are there. We tried the ginseng coffee which was absolutely delicious, and tastes like hazelnuts. My fiancé ordered green curry with chicken, and I went with chicken pad thai. He ordered his "hot", I went with "medium". Our food came out FAST, and the presentation forced me to take photos. I mean I've never seen such beautiful thai food before in real life. He ordered his hot as far as spice, and it delivered. He loved it, but just a tiny taste of his broth was wayyy too spicy for my palette. My pad Thai was very different from any I've ever had, and I loved it. The crunch of cold fresh carrots and bean sprouts on top of the hot saucy noodles was a perfect contrast. A few bites in, the chef actually came out to our table to ask if the food was to our liking, if the spice was enough, and to chat with us about his authentic ingredients. It was a really nice, personal touch, and it made us really feel like VIP diners. We left with full bellies and lots of leftovers, and the bill was more than fair. The food packs a lot of flavor and the chef does a good job with plating presentation. Pad kra pao is one of my favorite dish, I think this has to be the best one I've had from any restaurant. The tofu in it was perfectly crisp and the vegetables nicely absorbed the flavor while remaining crisp and not overly done. The 3 spiced catfish was good. The fish was flaky, crisp and meaty. The sauce was a bit overpowering. It tasted like a spicy sweet and sour sauce which was okay in moderation. The shrimp pad thai was our least favorite dish. The sauce was a. Food is flavorful and you can get it as spicy as you like. This was our first time here so we tried the dishes we love most: fresh spring rolls, fried fish in a curry sauce, Thai fried rice and a fried noodle dish. We finished lunch by sharing the sticky rice with mango and it was awesome! With the light rail, University Avenue can be very busy but there's additional parking in the back.
