The food is incredible. They make the kids' fried rice in the shape of a bunny which my twins love. I get a noodle soup dish with curry. And we absolutely adore the waitress. We always have the same one. She remembers our order. She is so kind and jokes with us. She also is the waitress for the whole place which can get busy. I'm impressed. Lunch special includes an entree with soup and a spring roll and a cup of salad. I could eat a gallon of the soup but it's a "lunch" soup only. I ordered it for dinner one night and was told "lunch soup" only!!! They only have spice level 1-5. I'd like to try 10. I get 5 with the addition of their chili and dry pepper spice. So when you start planning your Friday on Wednesday just so you can get off of work in time to drive the 45 minutes to this restaurant, then you know the restaurant is good. We found this restaurant while dropping off something in Salem and this is my favorite Thai restaurant and we live in the Louisville area. The restaurant decor is as expected and it's a small town so we've never had to wait for a table. People are always coming in a picking up to go orders so they do seem to stay busy. As soon as we walk in, someone is there to greet and seat us and they get our order within minutes. Please do try the iced Thai coffee or tea! Both are so delicious! I can't even tell you exactly what we've ordered but we've try something different every time and everything has been fresh and just wonderful. Probably more than you want or need to know but I never feel bloated or that weird way you do after you've had a meal with lots of sodium so I think that's a good thing. I also appreciate that the people who work there smile and actually seem to care that you enjoyed your food. It's nice when people seem to enjoy their job. Apparently the Thai Lotus is under new ownership very recently. Passing through Salem stopped in for dinner and we were pleasantly surprised. Had the pad Thai and Mussaman curry both very good as well as the Thai iced tea. At one point in time, I told my foody friends about a great Thai restaurant in Salem, Indiana. That was at one point in time when it was Sue's Thai Kitchen. I suppose that Sue sold the restaurant. Be that as it may presently, the food is not that great. I wish the new owners would get Sue's recipes because what they are producing now is pretty gross. As time has passed, and Sue's no longer exists, my foody friends have checked-out this restaurant and ding me for what a dissappointment it is. Too bad! Not only do I look like an ass, I no longer have a restaurant to patronize because the food is nasty; I used to do carry-out three to four times a week. I found my visit to Thai Lotus very disappointing...,The waitress/Owner was very rude and insulting, The service was very poor even though there were only a couple of other customers at the time,..But had no problem waiting since we were not in a rush...The food was as expected from previous visits, But the rudeness came at check out when there was no tip when paid with a credit card, The waitress/owner became loud and rude and could be heard from front to kitcen...because she thought there was no tip! When infact there was a very generous tip in cash at the table, even thought the service from her was poor and a very small gratuity was all that she deserved! TIPS ARE NOT MANDATORY..Tips are given for appreciation for good food and service that would normally be provided by the staff, This is not a mistake we will make again nor will we be using this place for Dining,future business lunches and dining for our clients...I don't appreciate bad behavior and refuse to reward it! I found the owner rude and very unprofessional! and probably should have went to the table and retrieved the tip that was left!! You have been warned!! read more

Trying a new place tonight. Thai Lotus in Salem, Indiana. My wife has heard positive things about this new place so here we go. Parking is on the street. There is parallel parking along the street front and angle parking to the south side of the building. Once we got in we were immediately seated and there was hardly anyone in the restaurant. However, as soon as we sat down with our menus and ordered our food I started this review. No sooner than I got my first paragraph down we had our food. I ordered the Thai Spicy Basil with beef and I got it Thai Hot! I do not use this word often...check my other reviews...but this was 100% delicious! My heavens it was sweet! The sauce was sweet and bursting with flavors. The stir fry popped! I don't eat green pepper but these simply were a smash hit! The green beans another smash hit. Mix it all together and soak the meat and veggies in the sauce and it is a home run. This is a place I will most certainly go to again, and soon. This restaurant was highly recommended by a friend so we drove from New Albany to Salem and it was worth it! We called and asked if they could hold a table for us and they did. The restaurant is small but very clean and cozy. The staff were so attentive and helpful! The menu is like a book-so many choices that we will definitely be back. Everyone in our party loved what they ordered. we had crab Rangoon and wontons for appetizers. there were 5 pieces in each dish. they were hot, crispy and yummy. I had the yellow curry #3 spice. it came with white rice which was nicely displayed in a heart shape. Several entrees were garnished with a beautiful butterfly made out of carrot. Wow! For being in a small country town this restaurant truly does deliver authentic tasting Thai food. I ordered spicy Green Curry and spicy Pad See Ew and the taste was phenomenal and better than a lot of Thai restaurants in Los Angeles where I reside. Be warned that when the menu says spicy they truly mean hot! The menu is extensive and there is a dish for everyone. The staff are friendly and the restaurant is clean and well decorated and organized. Credit cards are accepted and welcome with no fee for use attached like some places around here.
